Mike Scott is a national treasure here in Scotland, originally from my home town of Edinburgh, and this is a stone cold classic. I'd highly recommend Fishermans Blues for a rabble rousing banger. The keys player here in the video is Karl Wallinger, and I'd also recommend his own band World Party who had a massive hit with 'Ship Of Fools'. Unfortunately that track still resonates now, given what we're going through in the world with all the conflict and lack of true leadership. Ho hum...never mind, stay positive and keep dreamin' guys!!!!
WOW! I'm truly amazed you guys reacted to this song. It's one of the greatest songs to come out of the 80's. To me, this song brings out so much emotion, intensity, drama with a twinge of sorrow, and most of all, it's ends as uplifting and inspiring. It tells you that reaching for the stars is worth it, even if you fall. *Especially* if fall. I will love this song forever. Edit: And yes, this is a great song for dreamers. 😊 BTW, the band played the song live over the original track, so it's essentially a live performance. Thanks Jay and Amber.
One of the most uplifting and exhuberant songs you'll ever hear, always loved it. Played it to my youngest son the day he was born, Glad you both liked it guys, thanks for the reaction.
YES, The Waterboys with legendary, iconic lead singer and band founder, Mike Scott! This song is one of the most beautiful and unconventional love songs ever recorded. Ps. The Waterboys are still touring and releasing great music. I saw them live in Milwaukee a few years back. Classic! (Thank You Jay and Amber!)
Love "The Waterboys!" I, too, saw them before the pandemic, and they were AMAZING!! This song means so much to me! Words can really describe how I feel about it. Even Prince loved it.💜 So much so that he covered it. Look it up, it's on RUclips.

Yes, and they also had here - for a brief moment - the great Karl Wallinger on keyboards. He's a musical wizard in his own right and went on to create the band WORLD PARTY known for the song “Put the Message in the Box” and many other fantastic songs. Too bad Mike Scott and Karl Wallinger were unable to co-exist in the same band for longer than this album. Cheers 🍺
"I saw the rain dirty valley - You saw Brigadoon" For those who may not recognize this Brigadoon was a musical that was made into a film in 1954 starring Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, and Van Johnson. Brigadoon is an enchanted Scottish village that appears in the world for only one day every one hundred years.

I totally totally totally love The Waterboys. This was my college music. These weren't just songs, they were albums, they were the totally of what the band was doing. Music seemed to mean more. The Waterboys were the first group i saw in concert at a tiny venue in my hometown in Ireland. It was a brilliant night but this song was the highlight for us , but you could tell also for the band! Thanks for the lovely memory xx
This is one of my desert island songs. The layers and textures are perfect. I love the second half when the girl adds a simple backing harmony. One thing to consider... there's some confusion, frustration, and maybe a little envy in this song. "I wandered out in the world for years while you just stayed in your room" and the last line in the song "how the hell did you see the whole of the moon?" Just a thought. Thanks guys. Check out "Don't Bang the Drum" by these guys as well. Great trumpet intro and more deep lyrics. It's a rocker.

Amber, you are so spot on with lyrics. You really catch on so quickly. It's so great. You nailed it perfectly. And I love that video because it's actually a live performance and they nail it. Such a great Irish band. Great choice! Another of their great songs is This is the Sea.
I think of them as a Scottish-British band, especially since the only constant element in all the versions of The Waterboys is Mike Scott, and he's Scottish. But you're right, they had artists from all over the UK and Ireland in the band at various times.
I love this band so much. This song is pure poetry, love and celebration of life. Amber perfectly got what the song was about 👏. Definitely in my top 10 songs of all time. Thank you guys for your great reaction ❤
Funnily I've had this tune on my playlist a lot the past few weeks. I first heard it in a seedy Youth Hostel in Athens while back-packing around Europe in the 80s. Loved it immediately. And I still can't get over how effortlessly Amber is able to interpret the lyrics of a song. Not only has she got an ear for a good tune, there's plenty of grey matter in her head!
Never heard of them before, but Loved It! Violin and Trumpet were great adds, and then I also liked the Female Singer's harmony kicking in. Great Choice and Great Reaction, You Guys! Would love to hear more from Waterboys! PS- Just heard the Sax finish it up! :)
Karl Wallinger was one of the best and greatest musicians/ composers / producers and collaborators in music history. Sadly the great man has died aged 66. He passed away peacefully at his home. My throat is tight and my eyes fill with tears. Karl's music holds a very special place in my heart and soul. RIP mate you were a genius of the music world. Always in our hearts.
I am blown away that y'all have found The Waterboys. They were (and are) one of my favorite bands. They were coming up about the same time as U2, and if there was nothing but justice in the world, The Waterboys would have become every bit as huge as their Irish counterparts. But that did nae happen. Y'all want more? I have got you covered. Check out "Somebody Might Wave Back" "All The Things She Gave Me" "A Pagan Place" "Church Not Made With Hands" "How Long Will I Love You?" "A Life Of Sundays" "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" "A Man Is In Love" "Old England" "Be My Enemy" (
What a GREAT band and this is one of my all-time favorite songs. Great choice. The keyboardist here, Karl Wallinger, left in 1985 and formed "World Party". Another great band you should give a listen to. Specifically, "Way Down Now" off their 1990 album Goodbye Jumbo.
Wonderful to see you cover this inspirational and magical song. A friend played me this song at University - she played it to me as though she was passing on a mystical secret and that's what the song has always felt like to me. It's like a spiritual experience. I absolutely adore the female singer's backing vocals. Just sparkling and precious. Been having a dreadful time, thank you for reminding me of this song and helping me to lift my spirits. 💜
Never big in the states, although, one of their ex-bandmates, Karl Wallinger , had a hit under the name World Party in 1987 called Ship Of Fools (Save Me From Tomorrow). 😎
great choice! yes, the key lyric is how he saw the dirty valleys, but you saw Brigadoon, he saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon . . . Brigadoon was a magical castle in Scottish legend, as other commenters have posted. This song is fire, and Amber you are spot on with the lyrics interpretation.
Fisherman’s Blues is another Waterboys classic. The keyboard player singing at the end is Karl Wallinger who went in to form World Party (named after a Waterboys song). Underrated powerhouse of a songwriter and a great band in their own right. Check out Is It Like Today, Way Down Now, Ship of Fools… Amber, you’ll love the lyrics to Message in a Box.
YES! It is time for a Karl Wallinger/World Party renaissance … let's bring him back in the spotlight. He deserves it given all that he's been through the past decades. One of the unsung heroes of pop music. Cheers 🍺
To Amber, with all due respect fiddles are used a lot in country but guess where that tradition comes from? Scotland and Ireland! The Waterboys are Scottish and that was indeed a fiddle. We use it a lot in Scottish music.
Beautiful song by these guys. One of my all time favorite bands. They're from England with members from Ireland, Scotland and Wales, hence their eclectic sound. Big thanks again.
This song made the rounds on local radio, but never stood out for me until I saw this video. At the time, most videos were either overblown mini movies, or budget throw together pieces - filming live off the floor in a single take with incredible sound and lighting just wasn't done at the time. The energy in this live version exceeds the studio cut, but the entire This Is The Sea album is a joy from start to finish. Keyboardist Karl Wallinger soon left and started World Party - a band definitively worth checking out - and, in my opinion, he took with him their pop sensibility. Without Wallinger, The Waterboys went in a more Celtic folk direction and saw little mainstream radio exposure afterward. That being said, Fisherman's Blues, which did come after Wallinger's departure, is likely their most popular song.
This song is from the 1985 album This Is the Sea, a post punk, alt rock, folk rock album, which got great reviews and had moderate chart success in the UK. The band were being talked up as the next U2, Simple Minds etc. Then Mike Scott (who is Scottish) moved the band to the West of Ireland and wrote and recorded Fisherman's Blues, a brilliant and commercially successful folk rock album, released in 1988. Check out the title track Fisherman's Blues and And a Bang on the Ear, for starters.
Thanks to you two and to your followers' comments I am giving this song a first listen and I absolutely love the song and its inspiration. Great interpretation, Amber!!
Karl Wallinger, on keyboards here, founded his own group, World Party, in 1986. Check out their early hit, “Ship of Fools,” although a lot of stuff on their first three albums is quite good. Smart pop/rock songwriting with a slight psychedelic/hippie tinge. You guys would probably like them and their vibe.
Thank you for sharing your perspectives/reactions to this song (and more). I would love to spend about ten minutes just high fiving you both (to avoid an assumed familiarity). Stay the course!
Also worth checking out is The Waterboys spinoff band, World Party. It was formed by and around Karl Wallinger, the keyboardist in the video with the granny glasses. They had some really great tracks. I recommend "Message in a Box", "Way Down Now", "Is It Like Today?", "Ship of Fools", and "She's the One" (which became a major UK hit for Robbie Williams a few years later).
Mike Scott was a marvellous songwriter , very evocative lyrics. Steve Whickam on fiddle and Karl Wallinger on keyboards are excellent - check out "Fisherman's Blues' and "A Bang on the Ear"
Today I learned that this is where Karl Wallinger/World Party came from! Always loved this song, and The Waterboys got some airplay on alternative radio in the US, but I never knew the members of the group. I would love to see a reaction to a World Party song.
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. I'm happy to see you've discovered another band with a Scottish connection, with the main man, Mike Scott, from Edinburgh. As others have said, you need to check out 'Fisherman's Blues', 'And A Bang On The Ear' and maybe 'Glastonbury Song'. I think you would be surprised how many of your favourite artists have Scottish connections. For example, do you know the Young brothers, Angus, Malcolm and George from AC/DC were all born in Glasgow? Even Bon Scott from AC/DC was Scottish. And that's just for starters. Rod Stewart as well may speak with an English accent, but he sees himself as mostly Scottish. There are many more too! Æx 🙏
Love what you do. Interesting Mike Scott wrote this after meeting Prince. And it’s about how he realised how Prince could write such incredible songs compared to him. Because Prince sees the whole of the moon. Prince when he heard this done an amazing cover of it. Worth a review so different from original
I have loved this song since the first time I heard it. “I saw a rain dirty valley, but YOU saw BRIGADOON!” Damn, that’s a great lyric.
Yes the entire song is exquisite poetry.

Is it though? "A rain dirty valley"? That doesn't actually make sense. Never been said before or since. It's just there to fit that into that gap. A rain-dirtied valley might be slightly better, but it's still pretty poor lyrically. Rain doesn't make anything dirty. A mud-dirtied valley is probably what they're aiming for.

I think of them as a Scottish-British band, especially since the only constant element in all the versions of The Waterboys is Mike Scott, and he's Scottish. But you're right, they had artists from all over the UK and Ireland in the band at various times.
@@lyletuck Celts Irish & Scots along with three other countries in the world. ☘️💞
Mike Scott is Scottish, but was a great lover of Irish folk music and you can definitely hear it in this
This is a song made for healing
I love this band so much. This song is pure poetry, love and celebration of life. Amber perfectly got what the song was about 👏. Definitely in my top 10 songs of all time. Thank you guys for your great reaction ❤
there's no way nowadays music could beat the 80-90's in composition, mood and soul inside song.
there, I said it
Funnily I've had this tune on my playlist a lot the past few weeks.
They somehow remind me of Echo and the Bunnymen. Love it
I loved Echo and the Bunneymen - more than the Waterboys tb. I had their album The Seven Seas.
Check out "Somebody Might Wave Back" "All The Things She Gave Me" "A Pagan Place" "Church Not Made With Hands" "How Long Will I Love You?" "A Life Of Sundays" "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" "A Man Is In Love" "Old England" "Be My Enemy" (
One of my favourite songs of all time. Im glad you discovered this gorgeous tune. Please check out Under The Milky Way by The Church.
Great suggestion! I would like to add "Reptile" from this Australian band.
Gives me goosebumps to this day, song continues to be priceless. RIP Karl😥
OMG Thank you! Whoever requested this, you rock!
That would be me - one my mum used to sing to us and one I sing to my kids. All time favourite song, and so unbelievably underrated ❤
@@gazmundo1987 One of my favorite 80s songs. ❤️
Amber broke this song down beautifully. I love Amber and Jay's sheer love of music. I could smoke an ounce of this while jamming with them.
Check out Red Army Blues from The Waterboys - great song.
That whole album: This is the Sea is awesome. You could easily do the whole album one song at a time. The title track is really good.
One of the best songs out of the 80s and one of the few that holds up today.
Beautifully written = Mike Scott is a genius.
That was the Rivee this is the Sea is another great Water Boys song.
You guys have earned every member on here. The fact that it's still growing is a testament to how much entertainment you bring.
Never big in the states, although, one of their ex-bandmates, Karl Wallinger , had a hit under the name World Party in 1987 called Ship Of Fools (Save Me From Tomorrow). 😎
Sinead O’Connor was a backing vocalist for this band on their first European tour.
The best song of the 80`s.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs of the 80s. It's so gorgeous and dramatic and swoony!
Waterboys, Bang the Drum. Wonderful song, with one of the great intros.
great choice! yes, the key lyric is how he saw the dirty valleys, but you saw Brigadoon, he saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon . .
Cheers 🍺
Fantastic song never heard this but love the blend of sound and lyrics..
Brilliant album. "This is the Sea" another great song.
We’re originally all Scottish, but the band has evolved over the 40 odd years.
Great choice! Mile Scott and The Waterboys are such an underrated band by many.
I've never heard of this band or this song before. Nice horns!
You two make my heart soar! Your musical journey is wonderful to behold.
I saw these way back in 1986 on the same bill as Simple Minds and The Cult
Thanks to you two and to your followers' comments I am giving this song a first listen and I absolutely love the song and its inspiration. Great interpretation, Amber!!
I am a First timer also...the song is acceptable.
@@Jagangela lol. Check out the studio version. The violin player is a little more restrained on that one, and IMO it's for the better.
One of my favorite songs. Just a perfect pop gem.
Stellar song. Glad you discovered it. Amber you nailed the lyrics perfectly once again. The lyric break down at the end of the song is epic.
❤ I love The Waterboys so much, and I can't believe you reacted to them. Thank you!
One of my 3 favourite bands. I see them live whenever I cam.
Thank you for sharing your perspectives/reactions to this song (and more). I would love to spend about ten minutes just high fiving you both (to avoid an assumed familiarity). Stay the course!
The Waterboys were amazing. Such a vibe, and so creative. i miss that creativity in music!
Æx 🙏
Such a great song ! An all time favorite ! Thanks you for the wonderful reaction ! Classic 80's
Leader of the Waterboys Mike Scott , has connections with the county town of Ayr on the beautiful Firth of Clyde in western Scotland.
Love what you do. Interesting Mike Scott wrote this after meeting Prince. And it’s about how he realised how Prince could write such incredible songs compared to him. Because Prince sees the whole of the moon. Prince when he heard this done an amazing cover of it. Worth a review so different from original
wow never knew this - thanks very much
That's not quite accurate, but there is a connection to Prince with this song...just not that it was written after meeting him.
Such a wonderful song, yes Amber! I wish that for your beautiful children too and all the young people out there ❤️
One of the best songs ever written.
