How to design high-end candle packaging - Otherland Candles

  • When you raise 2.7 million dollars to start a direct to consumer candle company, your packaging better show. Otherland Candles has manufactured a custom and personalized gift experience starting with their website, down to small personalized details that make their product the perfect gift. In a saturated market like the candle and home fragrance industry, having premium custom packaging makes a difference.
    In this packaging education video, Paul Heslop describes how Otherland has designed an unboxing experience unlike almost any other direct to consumer candle brand has done. The textured papers, visually stimulating color palettes and personalized elements in this packaging make it great. Paul shares with us the few mistakes that are made in this packaging design and manufacturing that we can learn from when designing and sourcing our own packaging.
    Visit : processag.com/ to discuss your packaging strategy, design and manufacturing needs.

    This is fantastic when you have the funding to do it.

      It can be hard to do something custom like this unless you get into 5,10 or 20k units, but right?! When you can get that funding to do larger volumes it pays off.

      @@processagresources if starting of as a brand with no funding other than my own savings, would you recommend I invest more money into the packaging to begin with or develop and improve on it further along? I’m very conflicted about this!

    • @TunaYoney
      @TunaYoney 3 года назад +30

      @@SumeyaHassan don’t even bother. Yes presentation is important. Do a simple a design that works .Everyone wants to be like Apple. If I were you I would invest the quality of scent, candle holder and wax. At the end of the day customer wants a good quality candle not a fancy packaging (that goes to the bin) and what a waste of resources. If a brand is not sustainable, sorry I am not buying.

    • @farahmau
      @farahmau 3 года назад +18

      @@SumeyaHassan packaging is especially important because that is the first thing consumers see, and nowadays people like to post everything eye-catching at social media that will mostly contribute in the growth of your brand. Good packaging doesn't always means lots of fancy papers and prints that cost a lot, sometimes I prefer simple aesthetic-ish products. But do keep in mind that with a good packaging, comes people's high expectations, so… yeah both is as important as the other I guess

    • @processagresources
      @processagresources  3 года назад +2

      Lauren, for sure! We are seeing a lot of packaging that is built to not be thrown away. What packaging do you have laying around the house that you've kept? Ask yourself why you have kept it around? Those are the questions major brands are asking themselves, is how they design packaging that people don't want to throw away. I have always kept premium and wood box packaging I have received and reused as storage compartments in drawers, etc.

      @@processagresources I’ve a metal container that housed my wallet now housing my Polaroid photos instead. Perfect fit. I had an iPhone box housing my rechargeable batteries, but with the recent addition of my 18650 battery cells, I require something not so flammable now. My iPhone box is too small for the Polaroids though. 🤔 Wonder if I could fit a toothbrush and some toiletries in there though. Could make for a handy Go-Box.
      I actually don’t have many phone boxes. My iPhone 11 was my second phone I’d bought brand new. The rest were hand-me-downs or bought used. 😅
      Probably one of my favorite cheap packagings was when I got my Zebralight flashlight. Super small, durable, and easy to open box. No plastic shells, blister packaging or anything of the sort. Despite the lack of colors or anything super custom, the pragmatism was quite refreshing, and I feel it makes a much better first impression than something that looks nice, but requires borderline destruction of the package to liberate the thing. In all fairness though, I knew exactly what I was buying (as does the general clientele for this sort of thing), so advertising on the box is probably a bit irrelevant anyway.

    • @processagresources

      50-100 units would be considered a 'prototype' level volume for something custom like this. The design strategy, artwork + building just a handful of units would be so expensive that in my opinion wouldn't be worth it. If you need to start with that low of volumes - I would suggest something stock off the shelf to test and customize it with a really good artwork and design. You could also do a custom wood box as you can get a small wood shop to custom build something cool for you at really low volumes.

    Cool concept, but it’s one of those things that just adds to the cost without adding to the value of the product itself for the customer. Customization is a neat addition for sure. What percentage of the U.S. recycles 2020? - 32 percent. All other paper a special like this with plastic on it get burned and pollute. The recycling rate has increased from less than 7 percent in 1960 to the current rate of 32 percent in 2020. Is that worth it? Or just buy a candle without such waste of paper.
