Woodturning: Acorn Caps in Resin Bowl
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- Today's project comes courtesy of a few acorn caps I picked up in Connecticut while on a business trip. I don't know about you, but I'm always on the look out for things that I can put in resin and make something with. I was walking to lunch recently on a business trip and I saw all of these acorn caps on the ground. So I went in the break room and grabbed a few coffee cups and filled them up.
Once I got the acorn caps home, I needed to dry them out to prevent any moisture from interfering with the resin. I have personal experience with this and trust me, you don't want to waste the resin! I put them in a toaster oven at 200F for a couple of hours. I then immediately put them in a ziplock bag until I was ready to cast them in resin. The casting came out very nicely. I turned the resin and the walls are thin enough that the light comes through and you can see all of the different acorn caps in there.
I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!

Thank you very much to everyone! I'm blown away by the number of people who've viewed, liked, or commented on this video. - Ed
3:26 New subscriber here, and you really fooled me there! Whenever a woodturner plays their video in slow motion it is the sign that the piece is about to either fly off the lathe or explode! Yours did neither! It did however turn into a BEAUTIFUL bowl! The way the acorn caps overlapped each other made the blue seem lighter or darker depending on the angle it was viewed from. Really nice work, Sir, and the final shine completed the effect. I will definitely be back for more! Thank you!
You did very well, very good idea
Thank you very much! - Ed
@@WolfRidgeWoodworking I like your wood lathe
Really beautiful bowl
Thank you so much Ramona! - Ed
I love the way the blue became several hues due to the caps background colouring....very attractive 😊❤
Thank you Dee! The second pour was a little darker, but I think it looked nice that way. - Ed
Great products and for a better craftsmen, Bravo
Thank you Gabe! - Ed
Absolutely beautiful 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you very much Cathy! - Ed
Nice job!
Thank you Mark!! - Ed
Great Video 👍🏿
Thank you Victor!! - Ed
Wood turning is my new obsession I've been binge watching several channels thank you for being so creative and talented.
Thank you Trisha! That's how I learned what I know. So many great videos on RUclips. - Ed
Great piece and guide 👍🏻
Thank you John! - Ed
Nice project absolutely awesome 👏
Thank you so much Donald! - Ed
I have been fascinated with wood turning and would take it up if had the facilities to do so. Your creative, imaginative, and clever use of acorn hulls, that resulted in a superb little bowl, make me wish even more that I could wood turn.
Thank you! Have you considered a table top mini lathe? - Ed
@@WolfRidgeWoodworking The projects that get my creative buzz going, like your acorn hull bowl, are too big for the mini lathes.
I have a couple thousand little teak triangles (7/8 x 7/8 x 7/8 x 3/8) saved from making teak octagons. It seems to me that they would make a pretty nice little bowl.
I'll give you a couple hundred, free for nothin, if you wanted to give it a whirl. (deliberate play on words, ha,ha)
Ed, you are fantastic. The bowl was beautiful. Not only the bowl but the whole production. Very talented.
Thank you Steve! - Ed
Unique idea...love it!
Thank you Carol! - Ed
Very nice! I love the color!
Thank you Christi! - Ed
Great job!
Thank you! - Ed
Very cool bowl,good job 👍🏼
Thank you so much! - Ed
Interesting concept: Acorn Cap Bowl. Always enjoy your twists on the art.
Thank you James! I really like experimenting with shapes, finishes, textures, and colors. - Ed
Pretty cool bowl
Thank you! - Ed
Gorgeous!
Thank you!! - Ed
Lovely! That’s a great idea having a waste block already shaped, for the centre! That would’ve saved you 10-20 minutes in real time. Can’t wait for the next video!
Also saves a lot of resin.
Thank you Shaun! Using a scrap piece of pine is the way to go. On one of the other projects I used an old scrap piece of maple. It was almost as hard as the resin. - Ed
Loved this bowl!
Thank you very much Kathy! - Ed
Beautiful little bowl, congrats on a great job! Cheers, Sean
Thank you so much Sean!! - Ed
Awesome idea using the acorn caps. Finished product is spectacular
Thank you very much! - Ed
Very helpful when you add the tool you are using and the rpm! So many videos don't do that and it really helps.
Thank you very much! - Ed
Loved it! Great idea and great work!

Beautiful bowl.
Thank you! - Ed
@@WolfRidgeWoodworking Cheers 😊
That's absolutely beautiful!
Looking good Ed. Glad to see the oven trick worked out . Have a good 1.
Thank you Dave! I learned my lesson on that pine cone bowl to always put them in the oven no matter how dry they feel. - Ed
How pretty is that wow great job sir
Thank you very much Stephane! - Ed
Great looking bowl 👍
Thank you very much!! - Ed
That's so cool, awesome work, thanks for sharing 😁
Thank you very much! - Ed
Great job! I've used an acorn cap as a whistle before but never put them in a turning project. Beautiful result!!
Thank you Dave!! I'm trying to find some pistachio shells to see what I can do with them. Unfortunately, they can't be found on the ground and are pretty expensive. - Ed
Lovely!
Thank you! - Ed
Wow, your bowl is beautiful!! Love your idea. Tom has been wanting to do that for awhile. Guess, I'll be collecting acorn caps when we go camping in the Spring. Thank you for using our paste!! We appreciate the support you give us.
Thank you so much Annette! I really love your products! They get the job done easy peasy. - Ed
Ed this bowl looks the nutz... Drying the caps like you say has eliminated the trouble you had with the pine cones and i'm pretty sure this is my favorite piece you have uploaded congratulations on the growth of your channel and take care and have a good week.
Thank you so much Steven! I'm truly humbled by the support this video has received. Don't tell the other bowls, but I think this one might be my favorite one too! - Ed
Incredible. How amazing the way it came out! Very good job.

Tha bowl turned out really pretty! I love the blue❤️
Thank you Lisa!!! I have to agree with you because blue is my favorite color. - Ed
Great project, now I have to go out and find some acorn caps. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much Gord. I'm so happy that you enjoyed it! - Ed
Nice work Ed! Funny I was visiting family in New England when I collected the caps for my ice cream scoop!
Thank you! I'd love to see what you make and share it. - Ed
Wolf Ridge Woodworking the video is up on my channel. Congrats on the corker of a video! I’m not sure what causes it sometimes but it’s really cool when one hits the big time 😉. My particle board bowl did it for me, which didn’t make a lick of sense to me but hey... enjoy the ride!
Love the Alec Steele shirt!! 👍🏽
Thank you Tracy! - Ed
Very cool concept and well executed! Keep it up! I always enjoy your videos!
Thank you David! I really appreciate that. - Ed
I'm always looking also. I know what you mean about pine cones. If you use them again try to dry them then spray them with lacquer to seal them up. Maybe wait a day to really cure the lacquer. The will look good.
Cheers, Lee
Thank you Lee! I have some more pine cones that I'm excited to try again, but I'm drying them out like you said. - Ed
New subscriber. Awesome bowl, blue is my favorite color.
Thank you Barbara! Blue is also my favorite color. - Ed
I too was just out gathering acorn caps at a highway rest stop, and there were three different sizes. They have all been toasted and stabilized and are waiting for inclusion in projects. The smallest ones have already been cast into a tool handle blank, and the blank is waiting for its turn on the lathe.
I'm curious how you oriented them in the tool handle blank. I want to make a pen blank, but I'm torn between stacking them to make a single blank versus randomly setting them in a larger blank for multiple pen blanks. - Ed
Wolf Ridge Woodworking Did them in a one inch pen mold, and laid them with all the stems facing one end, in a sort of herringbone pattern. Then the resin was carefully drizzled and swirled in over them to keep them from moving or floating much. It was slow resin, so we waited until it was late in the process before doing the final pour over the caps, which was then thickening. The caps floated slightly, leaving trim areas on the outsides. I plan to use mine as a tool handle. That pattern plus the pressure pot eliminated any air bubbles from being trapped in upside down caps.
Awesome 👏 bowl wow I love the acorn with resin. Some day I’m going to make things with resin to it’s pretty expensive
Nice video I love it
Thank you! Yes resin is pretty expensive and I try to do everything I can to save as much as I can. - Ed
Have you tried casting resin...polyurethane i think....its a bit brittle and chippy...buts its a lot cheaper....i use a skew to turn it,but you have to keep it sharp
Have a look at bens works.he does eggs which uses a small cup of resin....also you have to consider the shelf life....i hpoe this is helpful....Chris
I'm in the same boat. I use a Polyester resin. Slimar41. A little more brittle but you can adjust. Mine is ~ $50 US / Gallon delivered. And I'm cheap. I use Tupperware and make my own molds out of plywood etc. Cutting boards make good molds also. Cardboard even.Check out Peter Brown's alternative resin colors.....Yeah, Cocoa mix works lol. All you need to do is think ahead and use some kind of insert to take up the wasted volume. Good luck.
I sub to peter brown.....i like that he experiments.....good turning Chris.
What big acorns!
So true! My old neighbor gave me a bunch different types of acorns when we visited last year. Thank you for watching. - Ed
That bowl came out very nice bud.
Thank you Alex! - Ed
So beautiful! Any wood with colored resin I love. Then throw in the acorns for even more interest. Oh my gosh absolutely gorgeous. Just subscribed
Thank you! - Ed
I did enjoy this video so much that I just subscribed to your Channel. Great job! Stunning outcome.
Thank you Marla. Welcome to the channel and I hope you enjoy the other videos! - Ed
I really love your introduction. I have been busy walking around my back yard picking up acorn caps. Don’t really know when I’ll get around to trying it-never turned epoxy bowls but way the heck right? I wonder if anyone has tried turning a bowl with the acorns instead of the caps? Loved your bowl, wife loved it even more. Gotta be careful wig what I show her. Thanks!
Beautiful piece of work. I'm from the N.E. so You have inspired me. Saw you chatting last night on Zac's live feed, thought I'd check you out. Subscribed.
Thank you Steve. I just found Zac's live feed a few weeks ago. I look forward to it each week! - Ed
@@WolfRidgeWoodworking I do also. I don't have anywhere near the resources either of you have. My " shop" is in my livingroom. About18 sqft. Midi lathe and a 9" bandsaw. BUT I turn out pens (mostly) every day. Oak tree right outside the apartment too. So...we turn no matter what our circumstances ,eh?
Love this!!! Thanks! I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you very much Gayle! - Ed
This is SO good!! Excellent troubleshooting skills with the finishing process. Turned out beautiful.
Thank you Leo!! - Ed
Watched your video, liked so much gonna make one myself :-), spoke with Curtis at Cactus Juice and will stabilize my acorn tops. Really great looking.
Thank you Gary! That is one thing that I would definitely change. I think I could have skipped the CA glue part if they were stabilized. - Ed
Beautiful mate From Ozz
Thank you! - Ed
That came out beautifully. If you never sold it I'll buy it from you. My sister would love this.
Thank you Rod! I ended up keeping it. I have a bunch of acorn caps on hand. If you are interested, please reach out via email (edlparker3@gmail.com) and we can discuss color and size. - Ed
Looks great, Ed. That would make a nice centerpiece filled with the acorn caps. If you were in Ohio, I'd give you all you wanted.
Thank you William! I went back to the same place and all that was left were the acorns themselves. I guess when they sucked up the leaves and the lighter acorn caps went with them and left the acorns behind. While the resin is not food safe, I think filling it with nuts or wrapped candies would be nice. - Ed
Spot on.....how could you not like it......also bring back the beard
Thank you very much Christopher! It's coming back and it's in that very itchy phase. - Ed
very well processed video and commentary. I have many similar videos watched and I rank this among the top. thank you and subscribe 👍❤️🙏
Thank you so much Jana! Woodworking and videography are two of my passions so I appreciate your comment. - Ed
He said ,"just a rough center ,it dont have to be perfect" then he measures it. LOL. Beautiful bowl though
Thank you Travis! I'm a weirdo like that. ha ha - Ed
genial, saludos desde buenos aires
Muchas gracias!! - Ed
Hey Ed. I know you emailed me about this project. I had no idea it would turn out so great. It looks fantastic. Great job!!!! I've just experimented lately using resin, or 5 minute epoxy to fill cracks for a different look. With some of the really crappy wood I have that I hate to throw away, I may have to break down and get a pressure pot. Hopefully I'm not to old to start something new on something I just started learning. I'm wondering if I should just clean up my garage and go back to flat boarding. I should since all my tools are going to waste. Wish I'd made it over your way now. I'd brought a ton of stuff for you to try out your resin on. Take care.......
Thank you Paul! - Ed
That's cool
Thank you Donnie! - Ed
Nice work, I enjoy watching your videos everything is well explained and very well put together, Just a thought have you tried using MinWax wood hardener , I find it just as good as stabilizing . It will make the acorn caps as hard as the resin and is easy to use.
Thank you Joe. I have tried the MinWax on spalted wood, but not the acorn caps. I'll get that a try on the ones I have left. - Ed
This is my first time watching one of your videos. I wondered if you used a waste block so that you didn't make it to thin using a mortise. I really like the idea of making something like this.
Dan Stark Thank you very much! I try and always use a waste block because I don't trust the resin and for a small bowl like this to not lose depth with a mortise or tenon. - Ed
Beautiful job. How hard is it to work with total boat? I’ve seen so many guys and ladies using that product. Wondering if it is worth the money to try. I’m sort of new at turning so any advice is definitely appreciated. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.
Thank you Danny! Total Boat is super easy to work with. I've used Total Boat and Alumilite and both are easy to work with. You just have to make sure to follow the directions as they use different ratios. If you haven't checked out Zac Higgin's channel (ruclips.net/channel/UCaiEQvv5CgXjk1qN7qevQUQ), I would suggest that as a place to start. He has some very helpful videos to get you started in the world of resin. I hope that helps. - Ed
That turned out beautiful. Since it was 4 years ago, do you remember how long it took to heat up and dry out the caps?
Great job and timely. My wife and I were walking the dog and thought of doing this very thing. I'm color blind, but my wife said it looks like you have different kinds of blue in the bowl. What dyes did you use?
I was going to ask the same thing. I thought I only saw him pour one dye in.
Nice bowl! When I turn, why does my resin bowl chip a lot? Sometimes my carbide cutter tool chips the resin. The bowl stops spinning on those chips and gets stuck. I do sharpen my tools and I can only assume that it may be in my pressure pot. I’m new to turning and my pressure pot can only have a max of 60 psi and it is on default of 42 psi. I see no bubbles but that would be my only guess. Any idea why?
Thank you very much! I also experienced a lot of chip out when I started making pens. The # 1 thing that changed that for me was using a negative rake carbide cutters. If you are using a pressure pot even at 42 psi, I doubt that is causing any issues. Try a negative rake carbide cutter and see if that helps. If not, please reach out via my email and I can try and help you with what I've learned. Good luck! - Ed
Great video and beautiful project. I'm new to woodturning and even newer to resin. One question I have after watching lots of videos is why the acorns, in this case, or whatever else is being turned doesn't crack or break off? For example, acorns are relatively brittle. Why don't little pieces chip away? Is it the resin that holds everything together really tight? I don't know if that makes sense.
Thank you Russ. The resin encapsulates the object and when you are turning it, you are only cutting away a small slice. - Ed
@@WolfRidgeWoodworking Thanks. So the resin sinks into every little crevice?
Free Good 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for watching!
@@WolfRidgeWoodworking Thank you
Wow thats stunning! I tried it and mine was a disaster, big holes and gaps. The caps would only partially fill with resin and many places making terrible tear outs.
You put a piece of wood in the bowl, was that just for stability? I filled mine with just caps. Maybe that's part of the problem?
Sorry to hear that Mark. There are a couple of reasons to put the wood in. First is to not use up so much resin and the other is to have something solid to either attach a faceplate to or use a worm screw. I've also started stabilizing the acorn caps to get a smoother feel between the caps and the resin. One other issue you may have is if you are using a faster set resin and it's not have enough time to get down into the crevices before it hardens. Just some thoughts. - Ed
What dye/color and powder did you use? Colors are great!
I used Alumilite Metallic Powder (Pearlescent): bit.ly/2Xwdze5 & Alumilite Dye (Ocean Blue): bit.ly/2qnTbjc . The links are not affiliate links and go to Alumilite's site. Thank you Kent! - Ed
Very cool..I am a new sub.. keep turnin!
Thank you Jeanne! Welcome to the channel. - Ed
Beautiful job, man! I was hoping to see how that Hut’s plastic polish worked. Have you used it yet? If so, how did it do?
Thank you! I've used the Hut's Plastic Polish and it works great. - Ed
Congratulations, very nice work, ask: where in the United States do you live or have your workshop?
Thank you Roberto! I'm in a small town outside Phoenix called Queen Creek. - Ed
Liked the bowl. Not the music
Thank you Mark! - Ed
It's a beautiful bowl, do u have a website ? I would love to order one like this made with leaves and acorns and wood peices?
Thank you!! I do have a website (www.wolfridgewoodworking.com). I don't have any for sale on my website yet (I have a hard time letting go ha ha), but please email me and we can get you something. - Ed
Aquaman's Bowl ... 👍👍👍👍👍
Ha Ha....Thank you! - Ed
Are you able to put the acorn part into resin along with the tops? I was looking forward to doing a project with the whole acorn in. would I be able to roast the full acorn with the same results or would it cook it?
Resin and moisture doesn't mix. You would need to dry the whole acorn in order to avoid that. One thing you can try is to spray them with some lacquer to seal them up. I'd try a small batch and see what happens. - Ed
Hi Ed, That is a great looking little bowl. Love the colour and the acorn caps, they really work well together. Did you receive my sticker? if not let me know and I'll send you another one. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw! I need to swing by the Post Office. I'm such a home body that I just never get by there. I'll try and go by there this weekend. Cheers, Ed
Saya suka karya anda...🙏
Terima kasih! - Ed
Outstanding job l’ll have to get me some caps and try this bowl how long did you cook the caps
Thank you very much Dale! I put them in the toaster over for about 2 hours at somewhere between 175F and 200F. - Ed
Did you stabilize the caps, or just dry them? The bowl looks awesome.
Thank you Mark! I just dried them, but next time, I will dry and then stabilize. I think that would allow me to skip the CA finish part. - Ed
At what pressure do u cure your epoxy?
I set the pressure to 50 psi. My pressure pot leaks, but I go out after 30 minutes and bring it back to 50 psi. I probably don't need to because the resin is pretty much set by then, but I don't think it hurts. - Ed
What shade blue did you use?
It's Alumilte Ocean Blue and their pearlescent powder. - Ed
I would have liked hearing the cutting sounds without the music. Other than that, great job.
Thank you! All of my videos starting this year do not have music. - Ed
I am not a fan of the wide spread use of epoxy resin, I think it cheapens the idea of being a wood worker, But your bowl is one of the best examples of what it can do that I have seen.
Thank you Ronnie.....I really appreciate the compliment! - Ed
