In this video guitar lesson series you will learn how to play Michael Jackson's classic "Beat It" note-for-note.
The opening guitar riff to this song is known by literally billions of people around the world. Who knew the King Of Pop would also write one of the most memorable guitar riffs of all time. All of the rhythm guitar parts to this song can be attempted by ANY level of guitarist. This song is just so accessible to anyone.
Of course the guitar solo is a whole different story. 😀 The epic guitar solo for "Beat It" was performed by Eddie Van Halen. About 4 seconds into the solo, anyone would know that. Eddie Van Halen performed this solo free of charge as a favor to Michael Jackson. He probably didn't realize at the time that it would go down as one of the greatest guitar solos ever written. Of course, that is all in a days work for the great Eddie Van Halen.
Eddie Van Halen really does pull out all the tricks in this solo, from the tapping, to the wide stretches, whammy bar work and tap harmonics, it is all here broken down in an easy to understand format. Have Fun!!

The trick is, learn it in parts and learn each part really well until you can play that part at normal speed, then move on to the next part. As you learn successive parts, combine them in normal speed till you have the whole thing.

I dont think it was a very known famous guitarist. I think now having read a bit about it that van halen done it on the record but live, michael got a lady to do it except for a few occasions. i have no idea who though
+U_Say_What_Fool You mean Orianthi? Van Halen wrote and played the solo on the record. Orianthi was Michael's guitarist for a few live tours and she used to play this solo.

I'm pretty sure he recorded loads of stuff that sounded sweet. Then put the best bits together and recorded that as the solo.

So that people know, tapping harmonics can also be done as pitch harmonics, just move your right hand until you find the note.

Not in this case. You're intentionally ringing out natural harmonics from the same string you're already holding a note on.

The most hard part is the stretch lick, I have big hands but it's looking like Impossible to hammer on 19th fret
It's even harder on the Triangle.. Especially those slides.. 🤔
When I tap I can hear the note but then in goes straight back to the note before and doesn't stay on the 14th fret
thats cos his guitar and amp and kit is way more expensive, not your playing
Make sure you're tapping right on the fret and not behind it. It will also help if you have the right tone- practicing clean can be good for practicing technical sections but some of these techniques are impossible without high gain and reverb/delay.

The tab harmonics needs better amps.
I think I'm gonna try it on my Squier Mini. Easier for the long stretch.

That 12 to 19 fret is a BIG stretch, always wish I had bigger hands for guitar, though I know it's no excuse. Not sure if I'll be able to do that one, I think my limit may be 12 to 18th fret.
You can always just tap that part if you cant stretch far enough. Hes just showing you the way eddie played it

Great video! Nice work, thanks for that. Just for clarification, it seems like the first tapping part on the high E is played one time to many, I was comparing to other videos, and it seems that they play "initial tap, then full pattern twice", then goes to the B - string tap. Again great videos!
its no tips it's just really hard to do that but you can just tap it with your other hand ! instead of trying to reach to 19 fret try tapping the same notes it will sounds almost the same actually.
Can you do the whole solo ? It's all in parts . Looks good if you can play the whole solo after teaching the parts. Like in all other learning videos, they teach parts and play the whole section. And so on...

Came here from the actual Beat It video to see the solo in better definition/etc. - used to be learning this solo but my guitar school (Yamaha Music School Glasgow) got bought out, and they stopped us learning cool shit like this. I can still do the first bend, harmonic tap, and first tapping phrase , but no further 😆... GODDAMN YOU YAMAHHAAAAA
If I want to spend the time on an EVH solo, I'll go for Eruption. I've worked on both and Eruption is easier, believe it or not.

hey thanks for taking the time to do this. I have most of it down (at like 1/4 the speed...haha) except the big stretch to the 19th fret. I am just going to do some random tapping stuff there that will mimic the sound.
Learning this on a 22-fret Les Paul seems impossible...

I learned the rythm/ chorus whatever it's called on a cheap acoustic in a couple hours. The solo is a completely different story.

I have a Strat with 22 frets, so it's easier to hit the note at the end bending the 22nd instead of the 21st.
