Beat It Solo Guitar Lesson for No Whammy Bar (Van Halen/Michael Jackson)

- Hey guys! Due to lots of requests I am finally making a tutorial for my "No Whammy" version of Eddie Van Halen's epic Beat It solo from Michael Jackson's Thriller LP. This is based on my "shorts" video I coincidentally released one year ago today! BIG thanks to everyone who has watched and/or subscribed from that video. Currently it's sitting at just over 1.5 Million views, so it's been a huge success for a channel the size of mine.
This is also the FIRST tutorial video I've done that I'm adding tablature to. Apologies in advance for any awkward or sloppiness due to these tabs. I will likely improve on my quality of such things based on how much demand I get for more tutorials.
Also the actual lesson starts a few minutes in... timelines provided below!
I felt the need to go into a little more detail why I did the solo with NO whammy bar, the comments and requests I've gotten on my solo since its release, and the desire to finally provide some tablature in my lessons!
My "No Whammy Beat It Solo" short here: • Beat It Solo - Van Hal...

Super agree
Dave honestly your short beat it solo is something special especially for us who don't have that FR on our guitars 🔥
Hey thanks so much man! Glad ya enjoy my playing. 👊🏻
Your added-in harmonics are really cool.
I forgot about that! Cool 😎
I was saying to myself, I don't remember those harmonics in the original by EVH and had to immediatley go listen to it. Nice addition and very Eddie like.@@DaveRucci
Van Halen and Michael Jackson are both legends
RIP ❤
as long as you can nail the fast stretchy part and the "eddie-ism's" then your good! The fast stretchy part taught me a lot of things

A bit late to the party but thanks so much for this! I've just conquered Johnny B Goode by Marty Mcfly & The Starlighters solo. Now it's time to conquer the next in the trilogy! Awsome video. Thanks alot!

You guys make it look so simple and easy to get the perfect sound and yet you have a million things going on in your mind to pull it off, thanks for the Tutorial Dave...

@@DaveRucci Oh stop it, you know you’re cool. 🙄😂 Rock on!🤘🏼
Haha. I’m ok but you’re the cool one really! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Awesome🙏💯💯💯💯🙏
Thanks Lena!
This came up randomly in my recommended, hadn't seen your original. This is something I've wanted to learn for ages because I only have fixed bridges. Definitely going to give it a go, especially the guitar faces 🤘
Hey man, yea definitely give it a go! Took me a while to finally get to learning it early last year. Definitely one of Eds best solos. Guitar faces are a must for this one! 😝
Had a good time watching how you teach this solo, Dave! Believe it or not, I've considered learning this a lot
lately, as I've got the rest of the song down! So hard to do Eddie on piano! 🎶💖🎸🔥🎶 Have a good one! \|/
Thanks a lot Marc! I'd love to hear a piano version of this for sure. Good luck!
Please make a full cover of this legendary hit 🎸
One day maybe!
@@DaveRucci I hope so ♥️
Dave, you really are a giant with the guitar. Greetings from Italy 🤟
Thanks Italian friend!
Eres increíble
🙇🏻
I have been playing guitar for 2 years and my hands still cant execute the speed and the technique i feel like such a bad player holy crap 😢 :( ill keep on practicing one day i will be able to play the solo!
Thank you for the tutorial and the tabs ^-^
You’re quite welcome. Practice w a metronome and gradually increase the speed. It actually works!
You seem to be the man to talk to... The intro for Summer nights, you know it has that kind of medieval picking to it, and the follow-up electric section, it would be nice indeed to have this explained thoroughly since no one else on RUclips seems to be able to comprehend it no offense intended to anyone just stating facts. Love your work man
Thanks man! Appreciate your support! I just looked up a tutorial on Summer Nights and the guy was explaining it pretty well. It’s just finger picked in the intro playing G chord but capoed up to 3rd fret. The dude I saw wasn’t using a capo which I thought was nice to give players another option. I’d make a lesson on it myself but it’d take me too long to put it together being I have other things I wanna do first. But good luck! I’d just YT search summer nights VH intro lesson and that one should come up.
@@DaveRucci you're a great dude man appreciate you looking at up and passing that on btw the monks doing cathedral just an epic idea and the fact that you pulled it off 🏆
When it come's to tutorials ......... just can't BEAT IT !!!!!
Hahaha! When it comes to LOL comments, you takes the cakes, kind sir! 🙌🏻🍰
Cool guidance... you always snatch me and make me follow you... this coming from an excellent musician like you is a sure watch ✌️🌹
Haha thanks Therese! I can be annoying in that way can’t I? Always enjoy hearing from ya! 😆
@@DaveRucci 😎
Could you imagine haven't the talent to just wing it and come up with something like that , this was done nearly 40 years ago ha ha ha ha
Yea Ed was an absolute natural. From the first moment he ever grabbed a guitar, people knew. His brother Alex saw it first. Lol
What series are your Washburn W pickups? 400s, 500s or 600s? Eliminators are awesome! Definitely my favourites too.
Hey there… I’m sorry I have NO idea which pickups I have in this. All I know is it’s a WG-248. Whatever they put in the stock model is likely what I have.
Oh Dave, I tried to speed up the video to the max .. that's cool !!😁
The fingers really look like the wings of a hummingbird .. or a hornet 🎸🐝
Haha. I’ll have to try that! 😃
Im good with pinch but new to taps...is there a setting that helps to get the tap to ring out loud and clear? Gain..pedal etc? Im on a metal setiing but the taps sound dead and the other strings are registering from the vibration..
Hey man! I have no perfect setting. Just crank up the gain and overdrive etc. The key is consistently hitting those taps in the perfect place. There’s a very small margin of error so once you find the sweet spot that’s where you can more consistently get that sound. 5,7,12 frets are easier than 4 and 9th fret tap harmonics
I can’t get the 2nd tap on the fourteenth to sound higher in the start and I hear other people saying that too. I’ve heard I should turn up the gain and switch the mic switch to the furthermost position. Any tips from you?
If it’s the tap harmonic I’m thinking about, you shouldn’t need any tips or have to do anything to make it easier. While it’s definitely a tricky harmonic to pull off correctly, it’s relatively easy if you practice at it. There’s literally one perfect spot you have to hit to get that note, so it takes a lot of practice if you’re not able to do it consistently. I think I missed it once in this tutorial too.
Dave ,guitar pro andriod based is the best tab making apps ,
mi sono appena iscritto al tuo canale, la tua musica mi allieta
Hello and welcome! Thanks for joining!
now is the stretch in this solo longer than the stretch for the outro solo in bark at the moon?
It’s actually the same exact stretch even though Bark is a couple frets lower, technically making it slightly wider. There is a very easy cheat for Bark however… just string skip the lowest note to the G string. I’d totally play it this way if I was in a live situation.
@@DaveRucci absolutely. I ask because I recently hurt my shoulder/wrist learning the solo!
Ouch. Yea I can see how that could be possible. From the 15-12-12 then instant switch to 17-13-10 and your wrist has to be flipped up.

I use an app called Songster, it's a really good one
Thanks I will check it out

very exhaustive demonstration
Tremohloh is my new word.
Yesssssssshhhh

Is it half step tuning??
I’m pretty sure I based this lesson on my short video solo which was tuned standard. Ed is tuned down half a step in the original Beat It, so if you’re playing along with him then you need to tune down. For this, it’s normally tuned. 😎👊🏻
👍147👍 for a good tutorial
Want to hear it on acoustic guitar
Too difficult!
@@DaveRucci just give it a try
A guitarist with a clean fretboard, is like a mechanic with clean finger nails....Are you sure they aren't faking it?
Nope. My fretboard is dirty as hell. I’ve gotten at least a half dozen commenters about my dirty ass guitar. Lol
Fun fact:
The great Michael Jackson asked Eddie to play the solo on this and never even paid him.
That’s what I heard too!
Tux guitar is a great tab make for free
Ok thanks
Ozielzinho's father?
Ummmm sure! 😀
I have a whammy bar I just refuse to use it
King Edward did not float the his tremolo
I’m pretty sure I never said he did, cuz I know he didn’t float them.
@@DaveRucci😂
you can also push down on the headstock to do the open g part
really hard on a les paul neck
JK don't do that
Lol. Good advice bro…

Wut
the explanation is way too fast, i had to come back to the first tapping part 20 times because ur going to fast and not explaining well but other than that great tutorial
Thanks William for your honest feedback. Someone mentioned a while back that this video was an exhaustive demonstration, which I think means I was taking way too long to explain everything. Lol. Some people want a tutorial that explains things fast, and some people would rather I take a lot of time on the details. I tried to explain things the most thorough way I could in the shortest amount of time so if you didn’t understand I guess I didn’t take enough time in your case. If you have any other questions about it, let me know.
Just play it slow.
This guy ever play or does he just talk
Dude, it’s a tutorial. It’s all about teaching and explaining the parts in detail. One guy said I didn’t provide enough information, so you’re completely opposite. Besides if you want to see just a performance you can watch a solo cover.
@@DaveRucciWell said👍 Did this moron even notice it’s a tutorial?
