Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer... Different times of year offer different opportunities for Cheetah. Hunting Wildebeest calves is a fleeting opportunity that they must take advantage of.
Nature documentary series narrated by Sir David Attenborough. A look at predator and prey strategies in the open arenas of desert and grassland.
The open arenas of grassland and desert make up half of all land on our planet. In these exposed habitats, predators like cheetahs, bald eagles and lions can usually see their prey. But it works both ways: their prey can see them too. With nothing but open vistas, the element of surprise is hard-won, and predators must make their own opportunities. This episode explores the strategies of predator and prey in the open arena.

"Mommy! Wait for me!!!"
"Sorry, my child. It's everyone for themselves now."
The funny thing is that an adult Wildebeest could easily just chase the cheetah off but the mother just ditches the child anyway.

Even humans do this sometimes to their children when times get tough

I have loved cheetahs my entire life. Every cell of their body is evolved to be about speed. Short bursts of incredible speed. They are magnificent, beautiful creatures.

What a footage and music! Worldclass !
No animal injured during the shoot: Am I f**kin joke to you?
It has to be wild knowing there is a creature that hunts you that you have absolutely no chance of out running. Your existence is a silent acknowledgment of the "I just need to be faster than my friend" theory.
Beautiful footage. 0:49 when the mothers come in between, so cinematic.
Our sense of drama is directly derived from when we were once part of the predator-prey dynamic. So it makes sense that these things feel cinematic to us since our very concept of conflict comes from when we were once hunting or being chased ourselves 😂
@@artloverivy It didn't used to last long when we were being chased

New records show that the top speed of the cheetah is 76mph....wow...just wow!
Edit: 0-60 in 3 seconds
That's the same as a Ferrari, in a 3 second race a cheetah might win
It's only going to get faster to it's been the the fastest animal for millions of years
Ferrari is a joke
look at how quick that cheetah closed the gap... absolutely insane.... those wildebeest aren’t slow either.
One wonders why the wildebeest don't just turn around and attack the cheetah, forcing it off their kin. Or just hold ground and not challenge the cheetah to a race by never fleeing in the first place. I'd think that with natural selection such a behavior would be much more common thus invalidating the cheetah's hunting strategy.
I love how it slows down when it misses the first time, and then goes back into full speed immediately catching it the next time.

SevenLeggedMoose The third 75
Don't be stupid seven. No animal runs 70 miles an hour. It was a mistake made by early biologist or zoologists using stopwatches.
Jack Leo Jack the Blackbuck was also said to be the 2nd fastest after the Cheetah but these Greyhounds shows who's faster. m.ruclips.net/video/D_Cl8oNKjwk/видео.html
+Borzoi Coursing Greyhounds barely hit 72km/h. It's really not that hard to see that an animal that struggles to catch a nimble yet rather slow rabbit will never beat an animal which catches the 2nd fastest, arguably the most nimble animal in the world, the springbok. Even in a flat out straight chase.
Kikuyu Kiiru Greyhounds run 60 but slow down to 40. They catch Blackbuck which runs 50 and so it says alot about Greyhound speed. Hares are caught regularly at coursing meets.

the little wildebeest 😢
Cheetah runs so fast that the guys have to put it in slow motion.
For all the pedantic nitpickers posting IDIOTIC comments about this video and the cheetah's TOP SPEED. -- i have this to say:
THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE top speed of the average cheetah. This is merely the TOP SPEED IN THIS VIDEO because the cheetah did NOT have to go full trot-burst-super-saiyan-beast mode chasing a stupid wildebeest whose top speed is a mere 80kph = 50 mph; so the cheetah did NOT have to expend that much energy chasing it hence it could RESTART twice in a row after being effectively blocked by the wildebeest mothers seen here. It had enough energy left to try again TWICE.
Note: Chasing a gazelle at the gazelle's top straight line burst speed of 100 kph~ 60mph, will expend the cheetah's energy af, and the heating of the body+brain forces it to stop chasing if the gazelle manages to keep enough distance between the two long enough. The real factor is how close to the gazelle the cheetah can actually get (the final stalk), before initiating the chase accelerating to top speed in 3 strides. YES!! THREE STRIDES!
CHEETAHS TRUE STRENGTH IS ACCELERATION, MORE THAN TOP SPEED.
So stop hating/criticizing, start loving.
/end of rant
Atul K If a Cheetah charged at a lion at 60 mph the lion will get the life knocked out of him regardless, but they will never do that because, it's a risk of suicide
@@Moose_skins Yes, that's obvious.
