Some of the sequels are good. I particularly like the third one. But a good follow-up to this would be Wes Craven's New Nightmare. It's the only sequel directed by Craven and has many of the stars of the first film playing themselves. It's a very meta film.

But to me that's how you know it works, to me he's the best slasher out of everybody and his style paved the way for horror by bringing humor and entertainment while being scary. The premise of a dream-stalking killer makes Freddy more unsettling to me than most other movie 'monsters' because you'd have the biggest chance to encounter him if monsters were real. If you want to avoid a shark attack, stay out of the water. If you want to avoid other monsters, don't go near where they are known to reside. Avoidance is all but impossible with Freddy Krueger because eventually everyone has to sleep.

Freddy is so unique and interresting, he's not just a mute killing machine like Micheal Myers or a unstoppable zombie like Jason Voorheese, he's got a style, creepy vibe of child killer and and unique personality and power ! Best slasher killer of the 80's no question !! Robert Englund was born for that role !!

ICONIC film, I was seven when I saw this and was traumatised but it's become my go-to series. Robert Englund's portrayal as Freddy has become a part of our culture and of course, Wes Craven, the king of horror, miss him, wish he was still alive, would have been interesting to see if he could bring Freddy back one more time.
Freddy was inspired by two people in Wes Craven's life, a bully by the name of Fred and a guy who he saw standing outside his out when he was little, the guy had a trench coat and just stared Wes out. Freddy's last name was named after a character in the Last House on the Left I believe. Wes got the inspiration for the film after reading a series of articles in which a young boy died in his sleep. The mythology of Freddy is amazing and worth looking into, Freddy also made New Line Cinema what it is today, being the first major hit for the studio, originally the studio was just a distributor of reefer madness so yea it's pretty epic and New Line is still called the house that Freddy built.

Wes Craven based Freddy's look on a homeless man him and his brother saw staring up at their window from the street when they were younger. And the "you die in real life if Freddy kills you in your dreams" concept came from a story he read in the paper about a young boy who refused to go to sleep and did anything to stay awake even sneaking a coffee machine into his room. Eventually he fell asleep and his parents thought everything was fine until they heard a horrible scream. They ran up to his room and found him dead.

Such an innovative and scary concept. Nancy is an underappreciated heroine.
In a very short time we got some of the most iconic movie villains. Darth Vader, Hans Gruber, Roy Batty, Biff Tannen, the Xenomorph, the Predator, the Terminator, Michael Myers, Freddy, Jason (and his mom), Chucky, the Beach Ball Alien, etc.
Magda from Something About Mary. The sleep technician is Roger Rabbit.

@@ForEternia umm….you are the one with the attitude, player. I always forward the video to when the first clip starts to play but this time I forwarded it to when she first sees Freddy. So again….no….I didn’t see the opening credits and it’s been about 30 years since the last time I’ve seen this movie. You were the one with the attitude saying “we’re you not paying attention”? No need for that. I was just making a simple comment and you had to come with your sass.

Running gag of the 80's horror movies...in almost all of them, if a character is name Tina, your pretty much dead for sure ! Only exception, Tina who has telekinetic powers in Friday the 13th par VII...First one, in this movie...

The teacher is actress Lynn Shaye. She plays the ghost hunter Elise, in the Insidious movies.
Elm Street was awesome in a huge dark theater! Wish they would re-release it.

I LOVE the nightmare series and was so thrilled to meet Heather Langenkamp once. Nancy was a stand out "final girl" in horror movies. Nightmare 2 is an outlier film, it doesn't follow the rules established in 1 and it doesn't connect strongly to any of the other films. It's more notorious as a strangely unintentionally allegory of a self-hating gay teenager. The better sequel (to me) is Nightmare 3, which follows up on Nancy years after movie 1 and expands on the origin Freddy and the nature of the dream world. Nightmare 4 and 5 are all right, not great but can be fun depending on your mood. Then there's Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which takes place in the real world and has Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund playing themselves. I won't say more, but it's excellent. So to me, the trilogy is Nightmare 1, Nightmare 3, then New Nightmare as an epilogue. Didn't care for the reboot movie, but FREDDY VS. JASON is fun as Hell.
