      As a Scissors player, I felt the same at first, til I realized most weapon sets I was playing with had some way to take out enemies in the center while practically still in spawn.
      at that point the game was camp center from range and ink all around me, and do a push near the end, after getting one team wiped.
      Kinda boring, but it took me from 0/3 in tri color matches to about 10/4 by the end of the splatfest.
      I do like it, if only to see how the meta will change over time, and to see how it plays out in other maps.

      Important note, this one actually _wasn't_ called a Testfire, it was called a World Premier, which is notable as Splatoon 2 actually had *_BOTH_* a Testfire and a Global Premier, where the Testfire was a demo earlier in development to help them with balancing and server optimization for normal Turf war, and the Global Premier came close to when Splatoon 2 was ready to drop to build and gauge hype and _maybe_ as a distant 3rd priority, iron out any kinks in the Splatfest format going into it's release. This time around, based on the naming scheme and timing, it seems like their focus was on the latter

      Yesss it was way too small. The defending team had basically the platform they spawn on and that’s all the territory that truly felt like ours, because rock and paper could just swim out from spawn and paint all the territory that was painted with enemy ink in the big area right outside of both offensive teams.

    I feel like what they should do is that every 1-2 hours in the halftime they re-evaluate who is actually on top, like that not just one team has to defend throughout the whole halftime. It would add to the variety and fun for the teams while not being as much as a huge disadvantage to the team that ends up being first at the halftime. It could also add to the chaos and more balance out the rush of who gets first.

    As someone on scissors: Tri-color was fun! However, it was... INCREDIBLY difficult. If you don't defend the ultra signal, you're at a permanent disadvantage. If you defend the ultra signal, the enemy teams get to have free reign over their own side and you can't do much about it. The only time I was winning tricolor games was when I could trust my team to 3v2v2 the enemy team and cover territory that they refused to grab, considering they were camping the middle. It felt like there were no right choices in how to play that mode.
    But most of the time it was nearly impossible to defend that thing anyways--- I rarely won tricolor matches, despite them being fun as hell. I feel like they definitely need to balance it more, since it just kinda makes the game feel like "Get in second place before tri-color, or die." Especially because the middle team gets flanked on both sides, and *any* victory counts as a W for both attackers, therefore leaving no incentive for the opposing teams to attack eachother to win.
    But also it WAS fun and I think the splatfest was fucking banger even though I lost! I definitely hope they can figure out the balance of the splatfest a bit more, but overall, t'was good experience as long as you ignore the people getting toxic online over not winning on their funny squid game.

  • @draconis17
    @draconis17 Год назад +727

    I was on team scissors, the ultra signals felt too strong to me tbh, once an enemy team gets one they've essentially locked down their own area and trying to take it is pointless. If the same team gets both, they even lock you out of the center area that's supposed to be yours. It really pressures you to stay in the middle and probably not ink enough turf to win
    Personally I think they should only appear temporarily instead of staying forever until someone gets them. It's basically like asking the defending team to keep a splat zone for the entirety of a game or you lose

    • @cullenlatham2366
      @cullenlatham2366 Год назад +47

      was a team paper myself, and though i can mostly agree with the sentiment, it is still a turf war. If the signals are taken, defenders probably need to change strats to offense, trying to push back one or both teams. The signals are only super sprinklers, they can be outpaced, it is just a matter of not leaving them be to reclaim areas. I think another part of the problem was that attackers almost always had high ground, with the only real exception being direct pushes on the signal itself when every moving thing was in the down position. Maybe another map will work better, the question is simply how they will accommodate the third team.

    • @Sir_Danks-A-Lot
      @Sir_Danks-A-Lot Год назад +39

      And then even if you keep it... you STILL lose, because you can't do the turf covering needed to keep points. All my matches it never really felt like a 4v2v2(optional), because at all times there was immense pressure from both teams and so much going on it honestly never felt like they only had 2 people at a time.
      If you went to keep their ink at bay they'd end up in the middle somehow. If you tried to defend their spawns would surge outwards with ink like a plague and eventually overwhelm you. Being the leading team in this mode seems to just be a death sentence from this showcase and I don't really like that. Hopefully it was just a poor map, or hopefully the beacons get a rework because as a new player myself it'll be a big downer seeing such a hyped up event like a splatfest completely up to whether or not you're WINNING (with that being a detriment) by the time tricolor battles come in.

      I saw all 3 teams win the tricolor at one point or another and it all really came down to how defensive a playstyle the lead team was running, if the two side teams with 2 members cant get the signals its surprisingly difficult to out coverage the team of 4...but if the team of 4 just camped the signal 1 good push from either of the side teams will result in 1 if not 2 signals to said pushing team.

Scissors base was so small that by the time I actually made some decent coverage on the left/right side of the map I was on or died, there was already a bunch of blue and yellow because our spawn was so close to the center. I think tri-colors may get fixed though, as I saw the official JP Splatoon Twitter mentioning that they were gonna find a way to balance it.

      I feel that’s going to be more of a map specific issue though. I’m not too used to the Turf version of the map used, but I feel like the spawn areas are usually closed off for Turf in that map. Other maps might be easier to invade enemy bases, but a bit of a handicap that I’d like to see included for the defending side is added platforms that make accessing enemy spawns more possible. Perhaps not all the time though, maybe more like a “Hey, you slipped up and lost the sprinklers. Not to worry, here’s bit of a helping hand”. Basically support from the winning side’s idol, as uh... dialogue from Big Man might have been nice to have during matches.
      Loved Tricolour as a whole though, might actually make me to want to play Turf Wars. ... even if it’s just during Splatfests...

    I was scissors and it definitely took me a long time to realize we could split up and get into the enemy spawn.
    A combination of the map being reworked from one where that wasn't possible and the direct telling us specifically to guard the signal made it a pretty easy mistake imo. I'm also a little concerned by how insanely high the clout is for both winning teams when defender loses in tricolor.
    Not because it screwed us over though (that was mostly the direct) but because I'm not sure how paper was realistically supposed to come back after the first half of splatfest.
    I hope they'll balance that a little better in live, but over all. I think tricolor is a fun and challenging new mode that offers a lot to all three teams and I'm sorry if the greater scissors squad displayed a higher rate of toxicity than rock (not paper tho, I agree, they were all cinnamon rolls). As big man would say to them "ayyy!"

    • @SoupCanMafia
      @SoupCanMafia Год назад +3

      I'm gonna say this as a Rock person, but I think one of the ways you could design maps to most effectively use the Tricolor matchset is to slightly tweek the Spawners, mostly by changing the angle they're facing to emphasize "Ink the turf" portion for the Tricolors for the middle team. Or maybe less intuitively, allow shortcuts for the middle team to effectively reach the Ultra Signal, but not allow them to use the area as choke points (like using grates). However, I will admit I only had one true Tricolor experience, so I am definitely not enough to say what is this or what is that.

It works well enough for streamers who can tell teammates watching the stream what needs to be done, but not so well for what I believe the majority of players to be: Randoms. If you can't communicate, you'll get roflstomped by the attackers. If all four players on the defense are in a discord call or something and have a game plan, you get to roflstomp the attackers.

    Playing the tri color battle as scissors was hard with my team being incompetent most of the time but if we had 2 people watch the blue side and 2 watch the yellow we usually won. but the splat fest was an amazing thing to just play in general i dont care that i lost mainly cause it was alot of fun walking around the new plaza and seeing the posts especially seeing scotts there! (sick that you saw my screenshot of it) great thing to play, sorry for who ever didnt play it hope splatoon 3 will keep the hype for me!

      Unfortunately that always happens with splatfests. Consistently, they've always been reverse popularity contests. Where the most popular pick loses for the most part. Since those teams have the highest % of lower ranked players and will on average lose more matches than win.
      Tribattles just make the situation worse because the more popular team will often be the defending mid, and therefore lose more often because the odds are literally stacked against you. I had a blast playing, but man was it abundantly clear that I wasn't going to win that many matches as a scissors player.

    • @Xane875
      @Xane875 Год назад +7

      @@PyraXadon Rock won the popularity, though. Though I guess maybe that's why Scissors won the first half, but if that's how it is, now we have a system that works on a reverse popularity scale for the first half and a regular popularity scale for the second half, which kind of just punishes your team for trying in the first 6 hours.

      Yea, if team scissors wasn't defending the Sprinkler then it was basically a lost for the team but then it also created this camping games where the team has to always be in the middle. Often at times I leave to push forward and then we would have lost the sprinkler. They could definitely change it up to make less centre focus.

    The splatfest was honestly really great and the specials felt well balanced for once. However I have to disagree that tricolour is balanced, during most of the event I was playing in vcs with friends and we bodied in almost every tricolour we got into. However during part of the fest I was playing completely alone and defence became a nightmare. The mode is balanced just fine if you can communicate with your team, outside of that you end up with approaches being completely missed leading to a flanker killing a team mate and causing an inevitable downward spiral. If they made ultra signal a temporary thing rather than, if the attackers get them both they just win, it might be a bit more fair. It's hard to say though, seems like the kinda thing that will have to get tweaked between fest quite often. Congrats on the win anyway.

    • @thatonejester3387
      @thatonejester3387 Год назад +14

      As a rock player I think tricolor is balanced but... Sturgeon shipyard was not, it allowed attackers to hop into enemy's spawns and there was no real place for team scissors to hide as they were being attacked from all sides.
      If the map was better (for instance a straight line where team scissors only worry's about the front and back and niether attacking team meets eachother until it reaches the middle) tricolor would have been balanced.

    • @BloodyNosePhantom
      @BloodyNosePhantom Год назад +4

      yeah i only ever won a single tricolor and it was by a percentage, maybe if there was a way to provide a tad bit more offense to the defender aside from gear loadouts it be a bit more enjoyable/reasonable? but as a comeback mechanic the way it stands now if one team gets two ultra signals its borderline impossible to win the match maybe if the signal lasted less.

    • @Okami_HD
      @Okami_HD Год назад +5

      @@thatonejester3387 I disagree. Even with a better map, the game mode relies too much on communication (eg teammates guarding approaches) which isn't feasible for a defence team of randoms, no matter how well you play someone can easily flank and kill you from behind if your teammates aren't guarding well or at all. Like I said, if the ultra signal wasn't permanent, it would make the game far more balanced in solo queues. (also as a side note, this is the same reason clam blitz is such a hated mode, the game is fun and well designed for league games, but playing it in ranked is aneurism inducing as you sit through teammates who are in S+ and yet still don't know how to aim clams or why I'm spamming this way when the have a super and I'm sitting next to the basket)

      I honestly wasn't a fan of the specials, but then again I wasn't a fan of the S2 specials either until I got used to them. Still, I'm bummed that there wasn't any defensive type special like bubbler or ink armor. I loved the n-zap because its special could also just be used as a free reload, but activating and tossing down the drink stand AND having to swim up to it in order to get any benefit from it took so long that that strategy was basically out the window. Same with the 6 mini stingray laser thingy's that take soooo long to home in on someone. I'm surprised everyone thinks S3 feels faster than S2, since it's the exact opposite for me

Sometimes my opponents, teammates, or I (usually other people) would be invincible because of latency issues, sometimes you'd die instantly because of latency issues, and most of the time you'd be invincible until your opponent walked past and kept shooting where you had been, then you'd instantly die when they supposedly hit you
