Darwin award deserved by everybody : the organizer of the meeting, the balloonists and the crews !
Well, we'll be watching this at our safety seminar next season..
So thankful no one got hurt. Sorry that the balloons and businesses were wrecked.
That's crazy. One heck of a gust front. It's a miracle no one was killed in that.
Who didn't call that flight?! I'm a balloon pilot myself and, with the storm visible and the wind you can hear in the background, it seems very clear that nobody should have been up.
Wahlmic They were not launched yet. The storm came up very suddenly. They were all in the process of deflating the balloons.
Ellen Calvy Dodd Perhaps I should explain. At balloon events there is usually someone in-charge whom is the 'Balloonmeister'. They are in-charge of 'calling flights' which usually means they will give pilots local weather reports and made a decision if they are comfortable letting pilots fly. Pilots are still responsible for availing themselves of the latest weather and making the ultimate decision on if they will fly or not. When I say 'call a flight' that usually means the Balloonmeister has told pilots they are not allowed to fly.
Ballooning is a small sport and these types of incidents affect the entire ballooning community. I hope everyone was all right; the balloon looks like a total loss but that's the best outcome if no-one got hurt. I hope very much thats the case.
Glad everyone was OK. I have two videos I captured from Friday night (before this happened) and it was fun - wish the weather would have been better Sat and Sun.
I was there. At the briefing,it was noted severe storms east of Madison moving quickly. I showed my phone to a couple people showing storm watch in the county 10 miles away. The flight from the airport was cancelled when they drove out there, but they decided to set up and tether at the field for the crowd. Luckily there was no one in the tents as it was early morning and not evening
the worlds first actually exciting hot balloon festival
are you okay mentally?
Easily avoidable.. no excuses. Need to hire a meteorologist for an event as weather-sensitive as this
This is precisely why you do not even get the balloon out when there are storms anywhere near(we go with 100miles) because the storms can collapse and cause wind to pickup almost instantly. The red balloon should have deflated long before this happened
There was almost no wind and the sky was clear as we were walking up to the event and you could see the storm line coming. All of the people there were working on deflating the balloons but the winds quickly came up to about 50 - 60 miles an hour. no one was in the truck, it was tied to the balloon.
I am several miles north of Waterford. I left the house on the motorcycle with 0% chance of precipitation. Rode around the corner, less than 1/4 mile and I could see it was raining. By the time I got back home and into a car, I was getting rained on and the wind whipped up out of nowhere.
As a commercial HAB pilot, I have taught balloon tethering safety seminars for years. Whoever took this video, I'd like permission to use it for pilot and crew training. Thanks.
look at all those chickens
Who's idea was it to schedule the event while a big storm was planning on rolling through today? Argh!!! UnSAFE!
bts845 I imagine the event was scheduled several weeks in advance.
The88Cheat they could have canceled because of the weather >.>
***** Of course they could, I was just challenging the assertion that they decided to schedule hot air balloon flights with foreknowledge of a coming storm.
***** They DID cancel, and were in the process of deflating the balloons when this happened.
Nancy Drew They probably should have checked the radar to see the huge storm complex that came all the way from the SD/MN border overnight.
Bristol take good care of there balloons
WHEN BALLOONS ATTACK
Just a little modification needed to make safer. Remove balloon envelope, remove burner, remove basket. Add wings, tail, control stick, and powerplant....oh wait....😎
That's a double whammy with the suv
crashing into the tents
Rigs should have never come out of the trailers.
Was working at a hospital in Waterford when I heard of this. Is there any word on how they're doing?
The guy in the black shirt that's between the guy in the yellow shirt and the guy in the white shirt, that was me. We were holding onto the rope for the other balloon they were trying to deflate when we saw the red balloon almost coming at us. We all let go at the same time and I ended up with some rope burn on my left hand.
Ouch so sorry bud
Looks like a nice cold front was passing through right at the moment those people decided to raise their balloons!
Maybe we could get some lunch 😂
Not sure how much longer are you
Wisconsin?
Were those port o' lets injured?
Yes, Wisconsin. MikeKnightTV
lol
For the people that dont no this i went there and shortly after that a tornado warning was issued
And that is why, you do not inflate your balloon when its this type of weather.
Was that car being pulled by the balloon?
wow never seen anythin like it
Should we keep an eye on the weather ? naaaah it's July in MN we should be alright.
Oh, the humanity!
the boingball goes mad
Impressionnant ce vent.....
Yea
Use to be there for the best way 2
I am assuming, no one was hurt? 😯
omg! wow!
Know when you're coming home order extended the best time to take care
This is why you use three point Tethers not just one
+Charlie Timbrel
Mate i dont get why everyone is asking about the truck.... the real question is what the hell are people thinking inflating in that weather... Complete idiots..
Jono Smallridge fucking good point i wouldn't even turn the fan on if this was the weather over here and letting the public get so close when they have no clue what to do around balloons just gets on my nerves and this is why there are no "crashes" at bristol cuz 1. pilots over here have more fucking common sense then these fools and 2.we don't let public get to close
its good
This driver is insane. License should be revoked on the spot.
wow
Oh my god
While I'm thankful no one was hurt. The craft tent the SUV crashed into at the end of the clip was owned by my wife's cousin and his wife. They are a small family crafter and they suffered a total loss. Tent, tables, candles, crumbles(a sentsy type wax) chairs, effectively putting them out of business until everything can be replaced.
+Frank Wrege Hi Frank, were your friends able to recover their loss in the end? Sorry to hear about this.
It took them a bit but they rebuilt their stock and were selling within a few weeks. They even took the opportunity to start at least one page.
facebook.com/Calebs-Candle-Co-229113737115402/?fref=ts
+Frank Wrege Were they able to get any compensation for their losses from the owner of the vehicle that crashed into their tent? I have a suspicion not, based on my experience with damages from balloon operators.
They are back up and running but the most I've gotten out of them is that it was an "undisclosed amount" (It wasn't my place to pry) So they got something but you're right it wasn't enough to offset the losses.
If they were in the tent to get out of that wind and a vehicle entered unannounced, it was very fortunate that no one was injured or worse. Sorry for their loss but in retrospect it was a close call for the people that was avoided.
I hope the FAA got wind of this bright idea
God says " Nope, not today, bitches"
Que prejú!
Hello Ellen, I am a producer at WISN-TV in Milwaukee. Did you shoot this? and if so can we and ABC affiliates use it?
12wisntv If you would like a first hand account of what happened from someone involved in the incident please contact us at skycab.balloonpromotions@gmail.com. We would like for accurate information to be presented and we are more than happy to answer any questions you may have. The festival should be issuing an official statement within the hour. Thank you for your time.
12wisntv The tent that the SUV eventually landed in is my family business. We have photos of the damage around the area that we can email if anyone is interested. Although, this video says it all.

استغفر الله العظيم
Perhaps they have learnt never ever tye off any rope to the back of a vehicle as the balloon when lifted by a gust simply lifts the braked wheels off the ground and the tethered vehicle simply rolls on its u braked front wheels ( into a tent?)
Anthony Hill There was no possibility the truck (2+ tons) would ever lift off the ground. The problem was that the truck, in park, was still parked on grass which got wet from the rain that came in behind the front. It simply pulled it across slick grass, which was well enough.
Hot air balloon broke
Lol, a little too windy, maybe?
That is why you have balloon insturence
Where in WI??
Jackie Behling
Waterford
How many people 10000000000000
The storm caused the redd balloon to fly it might be a wind storm or a hurricane
I was there where the balloon came down very scary
Susan Pantoja Susan.. My name is Matt Stone and I am a producer with GMA. Give me a call 212-456-0600
High wind so you anchor it to a car and don't put on the parking brake ... smart ... Besides even attempting it in such winds ;/
That happend.
yes it did
سبحان الله مجري الرياح
Never leave the truck in neutral!
It was in park....the force pulled it.
@@caitlinstephens484 theres absolutely no way that truck was in park. it was still rolling for a long time after the balloon stopped moving.
@@maxwaltervlogs you can see the wheels spinning. he may have put it in park but that clearly broke as you can see it no longer is.
It's a very good thing no one was in that basket.
shaolin dynasty there probably was but they fell out
There were 2 people in the basket.
Wow... you'd think people would realize lighter then air vehicles and bad weather dont mix and have a bad history. I hope nobody was hurt. And I hope they didnt make the hobby more difficult for other people. Beacuse you know what they say, rules are written for the lowest common denominator...
Ellen Dodd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please let me broadcast this without a license!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is why we have parking brakes...
Caitlin Stephens
Hahahahaha what a specific-ass thing to note when all this is going down. Such a bullshit artist.
Scotty Catman
Na just cut the wheels..
You clearly have no idea what copyright means.
Good luck with your
OMG everyone who keeps commenting on the truck driver, or why their brakes weren't on... clearly you have zero clue what physics does in real life. My dad flew balloons. I've seen trucks lifted straight up by their ass on a calm day. That sudden weather + surface area of the envelope alone means there is NOTHING you can do but hold on and pray. Mother Nature always wins.
Sad
As a pilot and friend of the pilot in this incident I would really appreciate this video be taken down. The weather in this situation is hard to predict, so the fact that nobody was seriously injured is amazing. But I would really like for this video to be taken off youtube, Thanks.
+c10chevyify Why? I think it is instructive for the public to know what type of operators they are.
Pilots myself included thoroughly check the weather, but incidents happen. Weather can change at any point in time, we all make mistakes at one point in time. As a pilot and balloon enthusiasts this isn't the place to be putting up these videos.
Where is the best place? Shouldn't the public be allowed to know about the hazards?
I'm not exactly sure where but I personally don't want it on the internet, yes the hazards should be known but pilots go over that with our passenger each time we fly.
+c10chevyify Do you show them this and other videos of crashes? Must take a while. To save everyone time on flight day, just leave it up and let the public decide. There are videos of plane crashes and I've never heard of airlines calling for censorship of them. I disagree that 'pilots (?) go over that with our passenger each time we fly.' Meaning hazards and safety.
just don't go to Wisconsin that place sucks
Ah shut up
better watch the weather forecast and local wheather, this shoudn't happen at any time risking peoples life.
Indoc trinatie They did watch the forecast, which is why they were deflating the balloons. The storm track changed and wind gusts were stronger than expected.
Why launch a balloon when it is windy like that. That was just plain ignorance
They were just tethering tho
@@maxwaltervlogs i apologize for the ignorace of 3 years ago me
They shouldn't be putting the hot air balloons up in the first place.
Supper Larsbilley they were deflating them when the high winds picked up unexpectedly
@@itz_jacoby3 oh... Okay
But it was just trying and girlfriend
Do you want me see what I love you so we can
