Avey Tare & Panda Bear's "Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished" (basically a Portner solo album with Noah doing some "organic d&b-style drumming" so innovative & incredible that Dave decided to put his name on the record) is truly mind-blowing, especially if you've never heard it - particularly for a debut. It's the very 1st thing ever released by any of the guys in AnCo. I read that Portner wrote and recorded some of the songs, such as "Penny Dreadfuls" and instant-classics "Chocolate Girl" & "Alvin Row," while still in high school(!). It's basically Portner's take on fairy-tale music (1/2 beautifully childlike, melodic pop & 1/2 abrasive, terrifying nightmare noise - the soundtrack of childhood). I've heard it called "idiosyncratic," which is spot-on. It has no influences that come to mind and there is NOTHING that sounds like it. Underrated as sin. If you've never heard it, please do yourself a favor and check out where all of the magic began.

Fucking rad rendition of Sweet Road, so cool that they still perform their older stuff in concerts. Didn't they play Alvin Row often on the Painting With tour too? Fucking awesome.

I appreciate the attempt at condescension, but I was there. This is the third time I've seen Animal Collective and by far the most self-indulgent performance. I (and many others) felt like we were having to watch someone's acid trip. I still consider myself a fan, but this was not their best show.

FWIW while that verse is the Other One, nothing else about that segment is. It's not the O1 beat or really any part of the song - so I would say it's some other tune with one verse of the O1 sung over it. Thanks for posting, fun set!
I'd love to see them give "Street Flash" (track 2 on the Water Curses EP) a pulsating, high-BPM trance/house/jungle live treatment - a la "Bees" from this performance. I always felt that it was very underrated, yet too sparsely arranged. Lots of empty space to play around with on that song, for sure.

I know! I think AC are generally way worse in 2017 than in the noughties, but this version rocks - way better than the live versions in the MPP era too.
SteeThreePO I swear I heard this on an episode of the Simpson's. I kept hearing it here and I'm like sounds like something homer said when wants to be a hippie again
@@febbecool no he's no being sarcastic lol, it really is homer simpson. The original voice says "never fear the cosmic fool is here". Its from an episode that he tries to be a hippy :)
i always wonder on the song daily routine, how do they do that "reversed delay" vocal effect where the tail of the delay comes before the actual singing? on the album, that effect comes only at the "up uneven steps" part but in this live version, it's almost all the vocals have that. it's crazy!
The thing about this performance is that there seems to be a desync with certain tracks. None of their other PW era live shows had this quirk, only this recording of it. I blame it on whoever mixed the Moogfest livestream lol. But you would be correct in saying that there's a reverse delay effect applied to their vocals, but as I said, there's a desync in this recording. It's not supposed to come on before the actual vocals, that would be veeeery hard to pull off in a purely live setting because that'd imply that EVERY single instrument that they're playing has a slight delay except for their voices.
@@TheAxeWorld1 hmm i think maybe AnCo's soundman/mixer guy/producer/band itself had influence in the post production? like they literally recorded each channel separately and apply that effect to noah's vocal track, and also many other alterations. that would be possible, no?
@@TheAxeWorld1 We NEED a good live recording of it, I have every version and listen to it a lot. my fav bootlegs are from prospect park, pitchfork one and mateel steel, Btw Ive been wanting to comment this since forever, but never actually did until today. wish this guys knew how much they helped me find who i am. i was such a cunt before i took acid and discovered animal collectives discography.
You should try meeting them after a show. I did once and seriously, they're the coolest dudes ever.
yeah i love their interviews they really are very REAL

Lolol, "Bees, WITH A FUCKING TRANCE BEAT SON!!" Always killed me in the description.. xD
the audio engineer for this set needs a raise
If this was at the Grog Shop in Cleveland the board would explode
I mean except for the drummer being entirely inaudible yeah
Nah he fucked up the live drums so badly
so cute how they close with burglars, such an underrated song from an underrated album
yes!!! my favorite from painting with!
Man, that Sweet Road into that trance beat for Bees makes my heart soar.
It's incredible. I always find myself revisiting these two songs here
This rendition of Sweet Road is fucking phenomenal .
catch me in the club, dancing to bees

One of the few bands that can take their already 10/10 studio songs and make them 10.1/10 live somehow (technically..... )

holy shit Sweet Road is orgasmic :o (also good luck with Repainting Along!)
I'm watching this in the bath, I hope I don't drop my phone!
Did you drop it?
man I think painting with is one of their best for their later catalogue
when they started saying "need her" I got hype cuz I knew what was next :)
WRE WRE WRU WRU WhRUUuwHruuuuuuh
Or you're maybe referring to the låter "need her"s
Michael Winslow together with Animal collective is like OMG!
forever love for slow water curses. nice to be able to hear the words/sing along
Geologist still rocks the head light, Yes

I can taste that bass in the back of my throat. Grateful Dead and Animal Collective? Aural bliss.
Check out Water Curses on Repainting Along. Ya might dig that 👀

Thank you so much for uploading this. The first half of this is one of the best recordings of songs there is. I absolutely love this
I miss the PW era shows. Those hocketing songs feel so good, especially live. The new material is great too, and their current shows are great
I was tripping during this is was so fuckin nuts
THIS VERSION OF SWEET ROAD MAKES ME DELIRIOUS
this version of sweet road is so chill and cool i love it
they are on my bucket list, trouble is i live in britain and they rarely play here:/ they look incredible
Charlie Tucker you live in Britain? I'm so sorry :(
Mark Humphrey yeah, not the best place to be atm for sure mate
stooooked on this version of Taste! similar to their recent show at merriweather post pavilion
Bees was so cool during this set
really interesting version of sweet road!
HOLYYYY FUCKKKKKK. THAT TRANSITION INTO LYING IN THE GRASS IS SOOO FUCKINGGGG GOODD!!!!
so psyched for Repainting Along. Painting With is such a good album and it gets such a bad rap. I can't wait to see what you do with FloriDada

I feel bad for the live drummer, the mic's on his kit are set to -60db.
guys eyes breakdown at 44:40 is fucking godly. they really made that track sound fresh on this tour
omg that version of bees tho
in love with this video
dont sleep on taste ...
Jeremy Hyman is an amazing drummer... i really miss Ponytail

Guy's Eyes was pretty hard rocking in this show, I liked it better than studio

one of most underrated tracks in general imo.
sweet road awesome version!!
In pokemon if you went down "Sweet Road" you would find a "Peace Bone"
seriously?? which pokemon? that is so cool they included that
rlly??? where's the dinosaur wing tho
Awesome!
The start of Water Curses features a bit from That's It For the Other One by the Grateful Dead
Oh shit, I timestamped it but forgot the title lol. Fixed
besssst set of theres in a while!!!!!! cant wait to see em tuesday!!!!!
Just saw them last night in Charlottesville. Greatest show of theirs I've seen and I've seen em 4 times now?
Damn! saw them last year Denver, can't wait to see them again.
FUCKING AWESOME
never fear the cosmic fool is here
SteeThreePO I swear I heard this on an episode of the Simpson's. I kept hearing it here and I'm like sounds like something homer said when wants to be a hippie again
the end of daily routine did things to me
thank you!
Damn I need to see 'em again so I can catch Peacemaker
ikr! It's the best hocketing track of the PW era imo. And those 'ooh aaah's at the end are so good..
ugh Peacemaker is so fuckin good live. I saw them days before this performance and it was amazing
They need an album with Winslow on it!
Well Water Curses is also superb
13:51 jeremy drops a stick teehee
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING AOOWWWWWW
Taste = G.O.AT.
Panda on the Burglars. I love it, he starts yelling so odd haha
Bees. I wish the little harp or whatever was on the dance beat.
would love an MP3 download of this show. so groovy
32:24 since that's the part I'm always coming back for
Saw them live a few days ago in Covington, that version of bees fucked me up good

"Bees WITH A FUCKING TRANCE BEAT SON" lmfao
The weird vocal sample throughout the bees really sounds like Homer Simpson doing baby talk it’s freaking me out.
It’s homer saying “have no fear, the cosmic fool is here...”

My guess is that he's trying to get some feedback, maybe?
Nice video. Did you shoot this? I was at that Moogfest, but missed the AnCo show. Not sure why. Was it inside at Carolina Theater or outside at ATC?
Never mind, you can tell during Guys Eyes it’s outside.

so curious
Dear Lord Sweet Road is like 11/10
Every time I revisit this Sweet Road performance I can't even try to hold back tears.
Why is the drummer pretending to play ?
His drum mics are low and some of his kit are pads for samples
those bees
What the eff is the vocal sample playing during bees??? Have they used it in the song before it sounds so dang familiar!
