  • Our first day of off-roading Moab, Utah in our Subaru Outback Wilderness took us to a familiar place. The Hurrah Pass trail is filled with awesome views and moderate terrain that can be enjoyed by anyone and the hairpin turns on the cliffside can make anyone nervous! Although this trail is rated as moderate, if you're new to off-roading, it could be a good place to test your skills.

    Nice to see you stretching that Outbacks legs. It may not be able to run “Metal Masher”, but seems to be able to do most reasonable trails without too much trouble. A road trip machine that can do most trails, but still knock out highway miles in comfort.
    I’ve taken all my Subarus (4) on multi thousand mile road trips. Did 4500 miles from Florida to Maine and back last October in the Crosstrek with roof top tent. Other than the I-75 blast to skip the southeast flatlands, the rest of the 11 day trip was minimal interstate (maybe 5%). Scenic byways, mountain roads, blue ridge parkway, back roads, dirt roads, forest roads. I followed the mountains all the way up and back. I went through Great Smokey Mountains NP, New River Gorge National Park (the USA’s newest National park), and Acadia NP, 6 state parks, 13 states, multiple National and state forests, and wildlife management areas. I had one campsite reserved the second night at Abrams creek campground in GSMNP. All other camping was wild or on family property (3 nights). No wife or kid on this particular trip due to thanksgiving travel plans/work schedule conflicts. It was just me and my copilot Bruno (my dog). It was an amazing trip where I had done countless hours of scouting on google maps, with plan c’s for my plan b’s, but relied more on the compass than maps for the actual trip. A dream trip with a loose schedule allowing for detours to scout places google maps cannot fully reveal. I found some of the most intense soft roading I have yet to do. While I do not seek out the boulders, I did quite a bit of exploring. Only one trail I deemed too intense for my stock Michelin all season tire equipped vehicle to attempt. 2 stability/traction control events when a wheel was lifted, and one single underbody scrape were the only “dramas”. It was a trip of a lifetime for me and my dog. We went on the best walk/hike of our lives in Acadia, on a perfect day with peak fall foliage. We camped creekside in multiple states. Steaks cooked on cast iron skillet on coals from a campfire almost every night. This trip will make the highlight reel for my life. Three months after this trip my dog had developed a cancerous tumor on his neck, it took him down hard and fast. I put him down Jan 26, 2022. I knew he was getting older, and I felt while on the trip that it might be my last big trip with him, but I had no idea he would be gone so soon after.
    I will always look back on that trip with the fondest of memories. I’m grateful for all the adventures my Subarus have taken me on. Although your daughter is to young to remember these early trips in her life, it is nice to see you making good family memories that will be awesome to relive when she is older.
    I have been enjoying your adventures in your Outback, and I look forward to seeing more. Thanks for sharing.

      That was probably one of the best comments we’ve ever received. Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your adventure and we’re sorry to hear about Bruno, but it sounds like he lived a good one! We appreciate the kindness and are extremely grateful for you taking time to watch what we create. This for us is about memories with our family, taking people along and receiving gracious comments is just a bonus!

    Dude.... Just got home Friday 3/4 from Moab.... I have been going out There for years., I send the month of July there and try a week or more over the winter... You are totally correct on its the only place I head home from and become depressed... I always take 128 out to Rt-70... That's such a a bitter sweet way out... Hurrah is the first trail my daughter drove in here Jeep.. So I have a place for that trail in my heart.. ... If you you have not been to Antcline overlook, that is a must... It's directly over the top of Hurrah looking. Down on the entire trail...

    Amazing drone footage of Moab. I just ordered an Outback Onyx XT from Subaru and am awaiting delivery. My partner drives a fully outfitted and lifted 4Runner for our overlanding adventures but we plan on using the Outback for lighter offroading, National Park treks, etc since I'll be getting MUCH better gas mileage. If you haven't been I highly suggest camping at Alstrom Point above Lake Powell or Cottonwood Canyon Road in Utah. Some amazing camp spots and fun offroading to be had just about anywhere in the area, just as stunning as Moab!

    • @roamingwithjosh
      @roamingwithjosh  2 года назад

      Awesome stuff and we definitely agree with the gas mileage situation as well as lighter off-roading. We have camped at alstrom point several years back and it was breath taking. With our crazy toddler we’ve had to choose other less dangerous camp spots because she like to explore and the sheer ledges are the best option for us. Thanks for the tip on the other spot and we will definitely be checking that out!

    For a variety of reasons, I've decided not to replace my truck when it comes time for a new vehicle. MPG, cost, etc. If I got something like an Outback Wilderness, I'd instantly have better MPG, better comfort, still have a good deal of off road ability (I'm not interested in 'serious' off-roading, but this trail you took is a great example of what I'm OK with an this car looks great for that). I'd be in it for a long-term purchase. Maybe 15 years or more. I'll keep my truck around just in case I need it around home for the bed (picking up stuff at a hardware store, etc). I do photography as a hobby, so I could see myself being able to drive that trail and stop in great places to shoot.

      @@roamingwithjosh Please make sure to get plenty of thoughts from your wife, as it seems like she is doing a lot of the off road driving while you are filming. I understand it's not a Jeep, but did your confidence in what it can do grow over time, or did you always feel like you have to drive it at its limit to get you there?
