@@Kakashi75 Not in a logic and axioms sense anyway, for sure. There is the problem that a socialist structure assumes the majority of its citizens will voluntarily work for the benefit of all. I think that's been a real problem for giant super-states with unwieldy bureaucracy, because that presumption turns into a bit of a coin toss. That being said, I think the structure would work super well in smaller communities where collective benefit would immediately be desirable for the furtherance of everyone involved. Say, around 2,000 citizens. What do you think?
Just saw an anti-socialism ad before watching by self admitted CIA operative John Hanson explaining how we can stop socialism and save freedom LMAO. They're getting desperate.

@@hoagielamp6543 Why all the enlightened socialists think economy exists in a vacuum? Group interests are inevitable at odds with one another and they become more pronaunced as life gets easier because the need for cooperation diminishes due to the lack of common problem. That's leads to change in the moral code of the people and how they see the world...in other words, the culture becomes more diversified and consequently more conflicting aspects of it emerge! That leads to conflict and to one side dominating over the other sides. Then we have basically the same situation as before...a group interests dominating over the entire society! Another thing to point out is the terrible conditions the lowest class is subject to in every capitalist country, regardless of the wealth of the country. I live in a city famous for homelessness, thanks to the failings of capitalism and austerity.
Brazil, my friend, is actually one of the most likely countries in the world to have a socialist revolution in the next 50 years (as well as India). It closely resembles tsarist Russia of our time economically, being developed enough to have an organized proletariat and fend off intervention but poor enough to motivate people to start a revolution. Also regarding the economic calculation problem, you do not need to plan every single detail at the very top level to be obediently and mindlessly followed down to when Jane Doe on 123rd ABC St. gets a new bulb in each light in her home, what type of bulb that will be, and what contingencies must be made for new technologies developed or new standards in efficiency or lightning type. With modern computing hardware and database systems you probably could, but it's certainly not necessary. All you really need to do is estimate how many of each type of lightbulb you need to produce per time period, and use statistical information on consumption of those lightbulbs to estimate where you need to make them available in stores.
You could also decide to make light bulbs which dont have planned obsalecence and compare the impact on the environment to the cost of reusable light bulbs.
It never works that way, however. You're describing a form of utopia, and utopia is not an option. Market economies work, without worrying about achieving perfection. Central economies have never worked, despite seeking perfection.
@@barrackobama2216 *Not that central planning has been proven to work.* Which is the entire point. Nothing is ever perfect, especially not human endeavours. Reality has a way of biting people who ignore it right where it really hurts.
@@roberteugene7295What fact of reality ? Ther is none. If you're referring to the past, there were mistakes. Calculations were done by hand and, as you said. With automation, and our improved knowledge and forms of logistics, more accurate plans can be made. Not to mention that not everything has to be planned to down. Non - perishable products can have the supply chain being considered in sections, with everything lower just needing to be able to provide the necessary materials/products (minimums). The encourages efficiency, because the more you get from little, the less extensive you production is, which means less parameters and variables. We can also use the same methods of delivering (on demand / replenishment/ on previsions) as today and with the same reasoning. Achieving perfection, as you said, shouldn't be the goal. However, we can try to approach it. Also, you describe the concept of the original comment as utopian when that's how LITTERALLY industrial businesses operate. Light bulb makers, car makers, laptop makers and so forth. All use statistical data to decide what should be made, when, what variations to give and how much should be produced to meet the expected demand. Why ? Overproduction is a huge no - no (while it seems efficient, it doesn't include planned obsolescence nor when it can mean waste like in the agro industry where tons of stuff gets destroyed instead of feeding the world) and sale flops are potentially very damaging.

@@sten260 "Paying people to work for them" is exactly what Capitalists DON'T want to do. But because of the Capitalist system, those measures only amount to temporary solutions at best.

Hakim, Have you read Husayn Muruwwa’s “Materialistic Trends in Arab-Islamic Philosophy”? I can't find a copy anywhere in English but if you have a chance to pick it up, I recommend it.
As an anarchist, I have my criticisms of the state, but any opportunity for the workers to wield the state against the capitalist class should be taken 100%. A worker’s state is better than a capitalist state any day of the week. I would just stress that the working class must not place all its trust in the state and must organize such that the state becomes obsolete. The state doesn’t just wither away on its own; it is up to the workers to take away its power.
Dan Norton For one, states tend to produce nationalism as a cultural self preservation mechanism, and that’s not good for culture in the long term. In the event that the workers want one thing and the state wants another, the state must lose.
Dan Norton Yes, within reason. I think people should be able to buy almost anything. But I do not think people should be able to buy, hire, or otherwise exploit other people. Once someone else’s work is involved, they should have the right to be part of the decision making process, including the decision of who earns how much.

Damnit now I have to rework my script for a video I was filming this week about socialism. Too much good stuff here to not cover, though I’m going to have to distill it more for the audience I have. Thanks for sharing.
12:50 A common problem I see on all socialist utopias with worker coops is that not all workers are created the same. Everything is framed as CEO vs labor, which tbf right now it is, but there are different classes within workers too that you'll need to resolve without vague handwaving. For instance, if a software engineering company needs a few warehouse hands to install hardware, do the warehouse hands have equal say in the company as the engineers? Their salary is different because the work is more valuable and less replaceable (granted, that is probably a capitalist mindset but I don't know how else to illustrate the difference). Surely if one's work is more necessary to the company, you have a greater say, a larger vote share, and larger profit sharing right? Especially in the case of profit sharing, it can get really expensive to fire people who simply aren't being productive because most partnerships require something like a two-year payout of partner shares in order to remove them as partners. If everyone is a partner, a single unproductive person can weigh everyone else down and be financially infeasible to remove.
@@strega1380 The part about valuing less replaceable labor was the mindset part. The fact that some labor is more important than others is a fact of life; there are different classes _within the labor class,_ and there's zero commentary on it in both this and Vaush's content.
The claim that a computer could calculate a whole economy is completely unfounded. I'm an engineer and part of my education covered industrial engineering courses aka managing the economy/line balancing and quality systems of the factory. The way companies do this today is that you hire a team of industrial/business engineers and leave them full time to work this stuff out. The technology to actually automate this stuff isn't there. It'd be way cheaper to just set up a computer to automate this stuff, management would absolutely love being able to fire the team balancing the production but we're just not there yet, this stuff is fantasy. The closest we have today is probably systems like CASAT, which while well under way to getting there is still decades away from fully automating even one factory. An entire economy is just unthinkable compared to where we are today. edit: I've written more thoughts as I watch through this video as response to my comment.
Comment 1: Another comment, you claim that capitalist systems simply cannot handle climate change something direclty proven wrong by the Montreal Protocol that succesfully tackled the freon issue. It requires strong regulation but capitalism can, and has already done so in the past deal with environmental challenges.
Comment 2: You're making a claim that under capitalism workers in a corporation has no say in how it's run and no input on the organisation. This is also false. There's a modern trend towards a production system called "Six Sigma". The core of six sigma is just that, you improve the organisation by involving your workers, giving them an input on how everything is going and how it can be improved. In the west we're not that good at this yet but we're learning from Japan and trying to incorporate this stuff, change towards a more floor heavy input driven organisation is already in place in Japan, and developing in the west. Comment 3: You're claiming that only a planned economy can be rationally managed but ignoring the rationalisation movements in Industry. You should look up Taylorism/scientific management and the rationalisation effords in the second industrial revolution if you want to understand how industry and economies today are managed scientifically.
@@Peanutcat by definition it is true that workers have no say in capitalism as the capitalist owns that means of production, they don’t have to follow any workers inputs if they don’t want to bc they own the means of production and until they do they won’t have any real say over the situations you put them in. Until workers completely own the means of production there is no democracy, there is just a megaphone in front of you and a knife behind your back.
@@hybridxg2204 Just because people have a voice in something doesn't mean that you'll land on a good solution. Take Brexit, it was the great democratic will of the people and now they're facing local food shortages as their will is being carried out. You don't want majority consenseus on complicated things that take 5 years to learn, you want the technical experts to make those choices. It's entirely possible that things can/could've panned out faster but it's also possible that things could've gone very wrong instead, one thing being bad doesn't make the other good. You're simplifying the problem a bit too much, you can't just say that by definition X therefore X because the definition can be wrong. The reason for the trend towards Six Sigma is that those corporations are simply outcompeting the others, if you're a capitalist and decide that you're going to make do without and not implement floor feedback you'll go bankrupt as the other system is simply better. It takes ages, there will be the odd outliers that survive for a while but the end result will still be there.
I was just wondering where you got that number for the surplus taken by capitalists at 13:30. I took a peek at your sources and didn't seem to find it there.

Oh yeah China has long been an authoritarian capitalist country as opposed to a socialist or communist country despite their leading part being the called the Chinese Communist Party
"Socialism gave people a higher standard of living than capitalism, *given equal levels of economic development*." In my mind, that was a flaw in the argument that was never clarified. Capitalists usually argue that under capitalism economic growth is bigger, so they'll experience higher economic development than if they had adopted socialism, therefore comparing equal levels of economic development is a flawed comparison. A more fair comparison would be to find out how much more developed a capitalist economy must be to achieve the same level of living standards as a socialist economy. With that you could show that even if you were to assume that under capitalism economic growth is bigger than in socialism, the disparity in standards of living is much greater. As Marx said, "There must be something rotten in the very core of a social system which increases its wealth without diminishing its misery". I'm going to read the study and watch your other video on this topic, where this issue might already be addressed. I'll post something here if i find anything. EDIT: I read the article and saw the video, sadly this issue is never addressed.
@@ExPwner PraxBen's video fails to debunk any of this. He never addresses most of statistics presented on the paper, instead he points out that the authors of the paper aren't economists without specifying how that affects the paper in any way. He loosely implies that they failed categorize countries economies as "capitalist" or "socialist" and the few examples he does give, as far as I can tell, are wrong. He also goes in a tangent about how the soviet union bought their first trucks from the US, as if it was remotely relevant to the study. Finally, he references a bunch of papers and says they support his argument without ever actually presenting what they say. I might give the papers a read but I'm not impressed so far. @@3snoW_ false. He did debunk it because they failed to accurately categorize capitalist and socialist countries, they put high performing capitalist counties into a category beyond comparison, and they put low performing socialist countries also out of the comparison all of which he points out in the video.
@@ExPwner Quoting the paper: "The designation of each country's political-economic system as capitalist or socialist corresponded to the United Nations' classification of countries as market economies or as centrally planned economies." They used the UN classification, and they are explicit on it, how are they mislabeling countries? They also justify why there's a separate category for the low performing socialist countries. It's not because they are low performing, it's because they transitioned to socialism recently so "the impact of change in political-economic system could not be fully realized within such a brief period of time." This to me is a fair point, and when you consider that a lot of these countries had a violent civil war prior to the transition, it mainly reflects how war has a negative impact on the quality of life of the people.
So called capitalists don't like to point to the tons of capitalist countries like the Philippines and Thailand (or many in the third world) who are more destitute than the US and western Europe. They construct the mythology with only the US and western Europe as the implied example, but the US and western Europe got/gets much of their capital accumulation from siphoning it out of the third world. I think like Hakim said, there is need for discipline from our working class revolution. We as communists or socialists will never achieve anything without an organized and disciplined movement. Sorry, instant gratification and convenience are not things a revolution of thought or economy or politics will produce. Struggle is the name of the game, and I trust that powerful individuals will continue to seek their own financial benefit in the form of capitalism relentlessly under a socialist, prole rule. If we get too comfortable with the way things are, things tend to get worse. I trust that even once, we reach socialism, the struggle will not be over, and that is what it means to be dialectical.

Half of the video the author makes a case for a technocratic society theoretically more efficient than capitalism. At some point he denounces how capitalism destroys the environment by creating products to be trashed. But if you examine the economy of the Soviet Union, no country spent more energy per capita than the soviets. Until this day Russia is the less energy efficient country in the world. Both bourgeois capitalism and state capitalism (or "socialism") are plagued by industrialism and the alienation of the working force. If computers solve the "allocation problem", the situation is even worse than market allocation, since the "right" planning will always be that of the ruling political elite and not really of the organic collective. A socialism not centered in the real decisions of the working class is not socialism at all. It is not enough to legislate for the interests of the majority, as this interest will never express the organic needs of humanity, and will inevitably lead to some sort of "scientific" tyranny.
8:02 I think you're overstating the success of project Cybersyn here a wee bit here. Medina doesn't actually go as far as to say that the Project was the main thing holding the Chilean economy together at the time as you imply imo
Clarification needed please, let's say a company produces kitchen tables. I personally don't believe that there really needs to be a state or national vision on how kitchen tables are produced. I do agree that the workplace for this company needs to democratic, co-operative, and employee-run. But is there anything wrong with another company to come into the picture and start competing to make similar or possibly better kitchen tables if the competition is also employee-run? And my main question is if there are two competing co-operatives producing something simple like a table, which most consumers can determine for themselves if it is a quality product or not, then is there any need for the state to regulate or mandate the production of the tables? (Also assuming the materials are ethically sourced and the labor practices are ethical.)

What are your criticisms of the state?

You're right, that's capitalist bourgeois mindset.
@@strega1380 The part about valuing less replaceable labor was the mindset part. The fact that some labor is more important than others is a fact of life; there are different classes _within the labor class,_ and there's zero commentary on it in both this and Vaush's content.

A sequel coming out so soon? I feel like I am being spoiled. Not like I am going to complain.
@@Peanutcat ok sure, but if people had the say over the issue and not companies don’t you think the problem would’ve been solved faster?
It takes ages, there will be the odd outliers that survive for a while but the end result will still be there.

i have link to Hakim videos in comments on youtube specialty does that is ant-socialist and most that have happens to me is
1. they admit to not watching the videos i link to because they are "propaganda"
2. they do Ad Hominem
3. they talk about how they "lived" in the socialist countries and that they dont want other people to live thru the "horror" that does socialist countries where
4. they put Nazism and socialist together calling them both "left ideology"
5. they ignore what i write because am too much "brainwashed" to understand the "truth"
and that is pretty much what happens does times but if it goes better for you then go for it because we need more people watching the "other" side of things than what is being told in capitalist countries
Didn't Lenin lead a murderous regime?
Hey, could you do a video on China in the future? I feel like you've touched on it before, but never in any depth. There are lots of contradictions in Chinese policies that pushes me to believe that it's no longer socialist and hasn't been since about 1978 when Deng Xiaoping rolled back the Iron Rice Bowl and other great policies of the cultural revolution. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
@L thanks! Looking it up
in fact,no longer when hua guofeng backed by deng xiaopin steal the power by overthrow the four gang after Mao died immediately. the time is 1976.10, mao died in 1976.9.9
Oh yeah China has long been an authoritarian capitalist country as opposed to a socialist or communist country despite their leading part being the called the Chinese Communist Party
Watch the PraxBen video debunking this. Also /r/badeconomics did a whole thread on it too. This video and “study” are bogus.
I'll check the reddit thread though.
@@3snoW_ false. He did debunk it because they failed to accurately categorize capitalist and socialist countries, they put high performing capitalist counties into a category beyond comparison, and they put low performing socialist countries also out of the comparison all of which he points out in the video.
@@ExPwner Quoting the paper: "The designation of each country's political-economic system as capitalist or socialist corresponded to the United
Nations' classification of countries as market economies or as
centrally planned economies." They used the UN classification, and they are explicit on it, how are they mislabeling countries?
They also justify why there's a separate category for the low performing socialist countries. It's not because they are low performing, it's because they transitioned to socialism recently so "the impact of change in political-economic system could not be fully realized within such a
brief period of time." This to me is a fair point, and when you consider that a lot of these countries had a violent civil war prior to the transition, it mainly reflects how war has a negative impact on the quality of life of the people.

Currently a social democrat, however this video may start to make me explore democratic socialist ideas and history ect
Have you noticed that Anarchists and Marxists have differing definitions of a "state"? Most Anarchist structures for distribution of power fall neatly into the Marxists' definition.
Tbf the representative democracy is fine as long as the people have the power to get rid of the representation immediately when they want.
@@hybridxg2204 well that don't work either tho
Thanks for introducing me to this study I always use it when talking to family about socialism.
Isn't socialism anti-freedom?

The information here is not necessarily true. Your scope is wrong regarding the devices here. It’s a small aside, as we do have the computing power, but even small economies are way too much for a modern smartphone. You’d need some cloud computing. Again, small aside, but we would need cloud computing centers (or supercomputers, but cloud computing would actually be better for this case) to plan economies, regardless of scale.

Until all the workers own all the means of production we cannot begin to maintain real democracy.

Sweet video! What is the source quoted at the 11 minute mark? I wanna read the full text!
