    I did this on my 99 manual ranger (1 previous owner with just over 100,000km on it) and it ran fine for a few days… after that, it didn’t want to start and bogged up on me. It fit symptoms of either a broken MAF sensor or something in the computer tricking it into thinking it’s receiving much more air than it was. I put the funnel back and it ran fine. If you want to try this, I would say give it a try but make sure you keep everything so you can put it back if it goes wrong.

    Did this to my 2000 Ford ranger XLT single cab 2.5l 4 cylinder. It's ALOT more responsive than it was with the funnel, although the noise remains the same, but getting to 60 mph isn't a struggle as much anymore and getting to 90 mph feels like it can go much faster if it had a longer 5th gear (mine is a manual converted)

    I have a 2003 Ford ranger 3.0L . I put a K&N filter and cut 2 holes in the side of the air box below the level of the filter. Horse power has gone up and gas mileage has gone up as well.

  • @Joshtheweatherman
    @Joshtheweatherman 2 года назад +9

    I did this to my 2.5L Ranger, and also bought a K&N air filter, and it's a noticable difference. I pretty much did a poor man's cold air intake. But it actually works, and it's not a hot air intake. There's no sense in spending $250-$300 for a setup, only to get maybe a 5HP bump. But ONLY if you do it in a boxed setup.

    • @Joshtheweatherman
      @Joshtheweatherman 2 года назад +4

      Oh and another thing, it seems to be getting around 28-30 mpg, when before it was getting around 25mpg. This mod really helps especially if you use the A/C a lot. Another way to improve fuel mileage is by cleaning the map air flow sensor with only map air flow sensor spray.

    • @ClayRepairs
      @ClayRepairs  2 года назад +2

      Actually I did that and it didn't make a difference unfortunately...

  • @MattsRanger
    @MattsRanger 11 месяцев назад +17

    Good tip. I tried it on my 2010 Ranger Sport. 4.0l stick. It's quieter. And seems much more responsive from naught to 85. The snorkel does provide a fun little sound on my downshifts, but if it kills the overall performance and does nothing else beyond nifty sound then this mod is the best I've seen so far. Now if I could just get a Hurst mod.

    • @MattsRanger
      @MattsRanger 8 месяцев назад

      Ah, after this I 3D printed an oval tube in PLA+. Much closer to get it back to CAI status and maybe a little smoother. I kept my STL files if anyone wants them. Then I added a cheap ram air setup. It's Winter... Overkill but no ill effects.

    So my thoughts are the rectangular scoop . Open it up & use more of its rectangular space . And the air box open that hole up more to match the now larger rectangular scoop. Use ABS plastic engine side & top side to block heat .

    Got a 99 4 banger currently hitting 10mph 😅. Maybe I'll give this a try when replacing my air filter that's been needing replacement.
    Edit: so finally went through with the mod. I replace the stock filter with a K&N replacement model 33-2106-1. I went ahead and did this mod. Deleted the restricter tube and extended air box.
    Overall performance when up a bit. A lot more responsive.
    Sounds pretty much a same to me. Didn't notice to much of a difference.
    My gas milage definitely went up. I was getting around 10mph city/highway. Full tank of gas maybe got 240miles to a tank. If i was lucky. After the mod. Driving like an actual truck somewhat loaded bed here and there and reached 300 miles and still about 2-4 gallons left in the tank. So i should see about 315-340 miles till im bonedry. Definitely estatic with the results.
    Note I would not recommend doing this mod/ or at least running a K&N filter if you live in a hot dry dusty climate because you will allow dirt particles getting into your system.

    So now you can.. Underhood Sucked into the intake easy.. Number 2... You see all that dare and stuff on that Box you removed.. All that dirt now will easily Into the airbox.. That front bumper external air was cold coming in... When start moving down the road.. The air will help ram into that set up... Now it won't... No runability Problem Doing this... But no power Gane...at all... Just allowing.. more Hot air from engine... And a little more Dust Dirt.. debris to get caught into the filter... So your filter will become clogged a lot quicker.. Just trust me... Don't do this people... One thing to do things like this as long as there's a reason for a gane... Some Vehicles.. This can help on some models.. This type of set up is not one of them...

    So you take off a engineered piece of tubing that looks very precise and think its a good idea? I would recommend you put your scan tool on it and see how far off your fuel trim is now. I am guessing it will be running kind of lean? I would think if it needed to be bigger Ford would of made it bigger? I believe when you start messing with airflow you will need to re-tune your engine computer as well. Also get ready for people who have engine problems after this mod to come after you for $$$$

    • @ClayRepairs

      After I did this to my Ranger, it actually runs better than it ever did. It ran like crap before. You can thank the EPA regulations for that. Even if it is running slightly lean, it's not going to hurt anything. Any fuel injected vehicle tends to run lean as they age. With carbureted vehicles, it's usually the opposite.
