I have an old Troybilt tiller with no spark - Tecumseh 6hp engine. I suspect something going on with the ignition. Question is, how do I know if the coil is actually bad? Is there a reliable way to test it?
Excellent Video. My snowblower had a 3.5 engine with no spark. I did not have to replace coil because the points were the issue. I removed them and cleaned the contacts. Ensured all connections were clean and had a good ground. Put it all back together and runs (almost) like new. Thanks again for a great video.
I am saving this video. I had to replace the guts in this older techumseh engine. I wish I had watched this video before I even started on this engine. Thanks again for doing these video's. The coil was shot on this engine. You saved me some effort anyways.
Thanks for the video. I have a 1970 Fox Street Scamp mini bike with a 1969 HS40 Tecumseh that needs a coil. I was a little hesitant about doing the coil swap. After watching your video I feel confident I can do it. Thanks, Matt
Really like the way you explain things, brief and clear. Right now I am playing with the exact model of a Craftsman snowblower. The blower doesn't have spark. Tracing down to the coil, I wonder how I can be sure if the coil is bad. Do you have any advice to use multimeter to test it?
i CERTAINLY APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO! As I am trying to start a like new (still has bright paint on the exhaust) 70s era Craftsman generator and realized it had points. While I have watched my Grandpa do this many times, I had forgotten what a PITA the old style was removing the whole damn flywheel and 3 head bolts just to check the points .
Thank you again,I was hoping you had a video like this on here about how to do points.Just picked up an old 1970 Montgomery ward 8hp snowblower, and ya it doesn't run yet,but I'm hoping I can get it running. Not to many videos on youtube of fixing vintage machines.
You have the best instuctional videos. One thing I forgot to do was mark where the mounting bolts were when I removed the points assembly. Whats the best way to get them back where they should be.
Very nice vids! Very informative. What would you suggest could be the main reason for weak sparks on a breakerless ignition system on an old outboard motor? (7.5 hp Mercury '74)
THANK YOU THIS THING IS A MONSTER TOO PULL, I TAKE OUT THE PLUG AND THE COMPRESSION READS ABOUT 110TO 125 LBS IF ANY ONE KNOWS ABOUT THESE ABOURISTS SAWS PLEASE HELP THEY WERE ONLY MADE IN 1997-98 FOR ONE YEAR.AND ARE VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR THEY ARE A TOP HANDLE SAW.THANK YOU DONY FOR THE FAST RESPONSE,I FAVORITE MOST OF YOUR VIDS YOU ARE A FANTASTIC SMALL ENGINE GUY AYY #1 IN MY BOOK
Hello I’ve replaced the points, condenser and magneto on my motor and put new spark plug and it still produces no spark when turned over, any suggestions? Thank you
On your replacement coil (as on mine) your condenser and points wires come out of the coil on the opposite side of the square hole from the original coil. I put the spark plug wire in the same place but had to run the condenser and points wires differently... Have you actually installed a coil with the wires moved like this?
Your tips on getting the flywheel off were great. 2 taps and it was off. However, I found the magnets had fallen off the flywheel. Which would explain no spark. How do you fix that? Or do I have to find a new flywheel?
condenser is to protect the points, and keep them from burning out prematurely. The condenser is just a little can with a strip of tin foil and a strip of waxed paper, rolled together inside a little can. A wire is attached to the roll of tin foil and the waxed paper is there to separate one roll of the foil from the next one. The condenser is merely a storage room for electrons.
I realize this is from a while back but I have a Kohler K series 8hp with a coil very similar to this one without the points attached...can I remove this one the same way? Can it be tested while apart? What should I look for while I have it apart to determine if it's good or not? Thank you.
The new coils have a different wire configuration. Including the after market one you showed here. I would have liked to see how you route the new one so the wires don't get damaged by the flywheel.
cold chisels are allways handy keep up the great work dony ,you r the man when it comes too small engine repair ! any suggestions on a STIHL 019T CHAINSAW I HAVE ONE WITH TOO MUCH COMPRESSION THERE I S NO COMPRESSION RELEASE BUTTON any tips or suggetions?? thank you once again your the man.
Do you have any content referring to testing these old coils and condenser with a vom? I've searched RUclips and Google and i can't find anything specific to these old magneto coils r value.
Hi I whant to say many many thanks for this excellent video, I have a Sears 4.5 outboard motor and whit your video I put my motor working again and I'm very happy with you, so many thanks for help me.
Hey dony, I have a h60 tecumseh. Cleaned and gapped the points. It now idles, but backfires and then stalls when it's at full throttle. I have a new carb on it, and adjusted the screws to no avail. Should I time the engine with a dial indicator, or install new points and condenser? What would you do first? I'm pretty sure it's a timing issue...thanks!
is the cover absolutley nessicary, I have a H50 I'm repairing for a mower and I don't have the cover. the points are clean yet I cannot get a spark, I've held the HT lead tip and the cylinder head and I feel nothing when I crank the engine, would that mean the coil needs replacing?
I just got into one of these yesterday with a no spark condition. The points are pretty worn but still gapped. The laminated metal that holds the coil in place had sustained some separation of the laminates on one side of the coil. Any idea if the assembly is still available, Don? It's the 7HP Tecumseh if that matters. I have the Ariens model 924048 and serial 017718, but can't find an engine tag yet. I had marked the assembly before removal, but my question is why is it adjustable? I'm assuming to set the air gap, but haven't found any info as yet on how to accomplish that. Thank you for any advice that you may offer.
I have same question as thegenrl does. Can I get a etectronic megneto to replace point and condenser coil? what should I do to convert old point and condenser module?
Dony, I have a question for you . Will the 30548b condenser work on my lauson TLC 349? I need to make it fit , I realize that , But in general Is the farad rating somewhere around 20 microfarads ?
Im new to this engine i got one i got not spark but it says ezee start magneto 30550 is that the same at the one u working on and part u order i dont even know how to tell the hp
Great videos, I have watched many of them. I like to repair the older chainsaws & you were the 1st person I thought of when I ran into this issue. I have a Remington 754 with no spark. Changed on off switch, pulled flywheel & cleaned breaker points, changed condensor with used one from a Homelight XL-12 (not sure how to check these). Also swapped out ignition coil from the same XL. Original coil was the same shape & size, fit great on bracket. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Hi i have a 10 hp Tecumseh and was wondering would the points also be set at 020 and would you know the air gap on flywheel? any help would be great Many Thanks for all that you do;)
on a magneto that is using the electronic style and not the condenser would there still be points on the inside of the magneto? if so i think i'm missing quite a few parts for mine >.
No. Yours is just a simple coil. (Electronic ignition). Go to websites such as www. partstree.com and enter your engines model for a complete parts diagram and break dwn. You have it easy. Take a business card put it in between the coil and the flywheel. Tighten your coil. Your done, its set properly and ready to go.
Hello mate when did they move to electronic ignition ? my engine is a Tecumseh MV-100-SE , starting and running been getting erratic and hates starting from hot , have cleaned the carb well , new petrol etc and it's getting in to last chance salon territory lol , shame as it has good compression , still sounds like carb ? thanks and excellent vid btw .
Good video and helpful. Is it normal for the two small wires coming out of the coil to be shorted electrically? I have purchased a new coil and both the old one and the new one are short between the two smaller wires. I see that one goes to the condenser screw and the other connects to the point terminal. I would think this is my non spark causing issue, but I'm skeptical that I recieved a new faulty coil.
I watched probably 20 YT videos on how to test a coil. I was reading OPEN on all leads from the coil to the "iron core". I finally pulled the coil off of the iron core to see if I could see any damage, and there was none. Then it dawned on me. Why is there 2 small leads on the coil? This coil is not grounded to the "iron core", because it is removeable, so the short second wire is grounded to the condensor. If you read between either of the smaller wires and the plug wire you will read resistance. I think my coil is weak as I am reading 7.5K OHMS, and it has a yellow spark. So I have a new coil ordered. Hope this helps someone.
I'm having issues with mine. I get continuity on the points, even when the points are broken. This has caused me to have no spark. Everything is set up just how it should be.

@bobcat123ist make sure the wire that attaches to the points is not touching metal

Hello I’ve replaced the points, condenser and magneto on my motor and put new spark plug and it still produces no spark when turned over, any suggestions? Thank you
can you switch this older engine to electronic ignition with the stens or nova II ignition module?
@thorpjoern probably the coils, on johnson's there is also a coil pack that can cause weak spark

I put the spark plug wire in the same place but had to run the condenser and points wires differently... Have you actually installed a coil with the wires moved like this?
Is it possible to get generic coils, points, and condenser for nearly any old engine? Or are they model specific for fitment purposes

@thealed29 it should spark without cover, must be the coil, make sure gap is 020
how to adjust coil inside flywheel thk josef ariens 1972 aprox

Great stuff. Bailed me out on multiple occasions. From a to zed. thanks
Donny, do you have a video on how to set the gap/timing on the internal coil?
not yet
donyboy73 I'm also looking for information on how to do this
@@CKGM990 how thick is that ?
@@donyboy73 How about now? 27 February 2022
Thank you very much for this video. It was very helpful to fix my friend's old tiller. A+++
Hi can you please advise the resistance spec for the H60 ignition coil
Even better if you would create a video doing these checks
Hope you see this--amazingly clear and helpful video!! Thanks so much.
Il nome Ford motor thank you vorrei sapere i nomi della della motozappa così riesco aggiustare anche la mia con lo stesso sistema tua grazie mille❤
My replacement coil has the two small wires of the same length. How to choose the correct connection?
@hpsuckz323 usually 6 and 7hp have the same coil and points

Hello I have a Tecumseh HH60 it keeps melting the points could it be a bad coil
Will it affect spark if the coil fits lose on the plate? Seems that my replacement is lose on there from side to side

@CzapigaKielbasa thanks for watching
Good information on these old L head engines.
if your spark plug still has spark does that mean your ignition coil is good? thanks
How do you test this type of coil?
thank,no suggestions for too much compression,

you can try to epoxy glue the magnets back on
if I wanted to add a kill switch on this same engine. which wire on the coil do I want to ground out to kill the engine?
I have Tec HM80. The wire from coil to bolt to points always shows as being grounded, even when disconnected from bolt. Is this correct ?
I have same question as thegenrl does. Can I get a etectronic megneto to replace point and condenser coil? what should I do to convert old point and condenser module?
I am not aware of any that fit this engine
Dony,
I have a question for you .
Will the 30548b condenser work on my lauson TLC 349?
I need to make it fit , I realize that ,
But in general Is the farad rating somewhere around 20 microfarads ?
Just saw your vid. Change all the same parts but still no spark? I have a 4hp any other ideas . Thanks Fred
If you've changed plug, points, condenser, coil and set the plate properly and you still have no spark then check for a grounded wire somewhere.
Thank you
make sure the points gap is ok and also the coil gap
It worked! Cold Steel Epoxy. We now have spark... ( = Thanks a million!!!!!!

Possibly some jobber coils have correct length ,one I received did not fit without lenghtened wire ,good video (just adding info)

use a business card
Hi Mate, great video. Do you have any ohm resistance specs for this type of coil, I cant seem to find any info online. cheers.
Hi Don, would one of those Nova Electronic Ignition modules work to replace the points and condenser on these old Tecumseh Magnetos?
not sure, never tried. I have good luck replacing points and coil
i have an old craftsman 8hp tecumseh and need a coil its a 143 726152 any ideas. i think early 80s
is there a coil I can get to I don't need the points anymore?

DO YOU KNOW WHERE I CAN OBTAIN A COMPLETE MAGNETO SYSTEM OR JUST THE STATOR ASSY TPC-30561B
FROM BobV
Try your local small engine shop or check on Ebay.
How does one test that coil? 4.5 tecumseh
Boat engine.
just line up the plate where it was bolted before taking it off, also if the marks are gone just line up the plate in the center of the bolt holes
Around 1984 on most Tecumsehs, late 82 into 83 on Briggs.

What is the correct gap setting for the points?
.020"
thank you for the video it is very good and helpful.
yes it does
@WestNiall good to hear
tres tres bien expliquer.merci beaucoup
I searched your listing of videos for "points" but only found one video on a pioneer chainsaw. Is that the one you meant ?
try gapping the points at 020
how do you check a magneto to see if its working. i have a old yamaha and there is no spark
Coil from jobber has wires coming out in different place than one you reinstalled won't go on same retaining clip or wires won't reach
Very helpful!!

thank you!
Thanks Dony!
i have no spark on my snow blower, i have cleaned all stuff so can be cleaned! i have seen spark 2 times but can`t see any spark anymore. help
Why can't I get that clip to stay on the coil?
I'm having issues with mine. I get continuity on the points, even when the points are broken. This has caused me to have no spark. Everything is set up just how it should be.
@thegenrl not that i know of for this tecumseh
good job except the last part about the marks should have been covered first, JMO
very informative. thanks.
most small engine shops will have them
Thanks alot, I Subscribed!
You are planning too fast too catch finer points such as how this ratainer clip for the coil is mounted to the E core. Mine doesn't look right
@jacobforall62 thank you
i think so
@troyboythedog thank you sir
i've had one apart
That coil is same as on Mercury outboards
it could burn out the points prematurely
COULD IT BE SOMTHING OTHER THAN A COMPRESSION ISSUE??
