I recently upgraded from a 2001 outback with nearly 300,000 miles on it to a brand new 2016 crosstrek. I love it everything about it. The size is perfect for me and my lifestyle, the difference between my old outback and this new car is huge. All wheel drive was a must, I live in colorado. Our winters can be intense. It's sporty looking and really easy to fall in love with. Plus, it is a subaru. Truly in love with it.
My ten cents if you are looking for a small crossover the Crosstrek is only one worth getting. Its not perfect but it's few flaws are over shadowed by it's many pros. I would have to say my favorite thing about this car is that it does not have gimmicks. Every thing has a practical purpose. It is a little lacking on power but I get 490 mile to a tank (highway) so you can keep your 11 sec 1/4 mile.
Good point, i was frustrated by the lack of boot space but it's still manageable for my needs and it's still very unique in its class. I'm looking at purchasing one tomororow. Was hoping to wait for the 2.5l in the MY2021 series but I just found we're only getting the 2.0 in Australia, Aaaaargh!!!
sir, your reviews have always been awesome and you keep improving by adding new stuff. I have a suggestion, it would be great if you could include the safety and crash test scores of the vehicles if they are available. especially a company like Subaru which values safety should get the due credit and attention for that. thank you.
Mister Alex, could you please review the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek? There is a list of changes they have made to the new model and I would love to get your take on them. I always enjoy your reviews. Well written, well thought out and consistent between your reviews which makes it easier to compare. Keep up all that you do!
Your reviews are the best around. Very thorough. Would you mind if I made a suggestion? There are three important categories that I think you leave out in your reviews. Perhaps for certain reasons I'm not aware of. Anyways, I think it would be nice to see these: 1. You sit in the drivers seat, the rear seats, and even in the trunk area, however I never see you sit in the passenger seats. I think it is the second most important seat in any vehicle. Also, so many vehicles lack a height adjustment on the passenger seat. So passenger seat comfort is very important for shorter and taller passengers. 2. Safety. How safe is the vehicle? IIHS and Government crash test ratings. They are very important to many people and families when considering a vehicle. 3. Reliability. This info might be a little harder to find. Consumer reports and JD power usually has them. Adding these to your already thorough reviews would provide to the public the most comprehensive check list. You already provide the best detailed reviews and this would only add to it. In fact with these three I can not think of anything else that would be missing. Thanks Alex and keep up the great work!
I just bought a 2016 Crosstrek Limited (with no extras beyond the Limited trim) in Mexico for $24K out the door. I settled on the Subaru for the off-road capabilities. Great review!
This was a great review, thanks! I’m not old enough for driving yet but I’m soooo close so I’ve been starting to look at cars and this review really helped me thank you so much!
Alex, to be clear the boxer engine has one crankshaft with two pairs of cylinders opposed to each other. The description you gave that the pistons were banging against each other describes a twin crankshaft engine like the Deltoid diesel engine with three banks of cylinders, all opposed to one another and having three remote crankshafts at the ends of the engine.
The pistons are still moving in the manner described, I never mentioned where the crank shaft was because my elbows don't rotate 180 degrees. I was simply explaining why the engine is called a boxer engine.
Alex, you must be bored by people telling you how good your reviews are but I'm going to say it anyway. I have a hunch that the new Toyota C-HR is going to be very competitive in this segment when it debuts in the near future. Kudos to Subaru for keeping a manual option.
Amazing review!!! Perfect! I suggest anyone getting this also add the Pedal Commander that’s meant for this specific car. It opens it up! Makes it FUN! I promise. The throttle is way more responsive, more downright torque and higher revs, where the power unleashes… and adaptable at any moment, to have more spirited driving like on-ramps for expressways in sport mode, punchy city mode ( maybe too jerky for some but punctual when needed) or for eco mode at 29-30 mpg savings. The pick-up at highway speed in sport plus is incredible, nothing like stock. Well worth the money. For like $270, even installment plans available it was sick. This is not a paid promotion. I just subbed and love this review. Enjoy this car! Hopefully I’m able to find intake spreaders and some tune ups in the future. Great for rideshare utility as well.
A couple things to add. The plate in the bottom center of the rear bumper can be removed. There are hitches that fit behind that hole. You can also replace the plate with a brake light. In the armrest compartment there is a USB connector. I have a 16 gig flash drive of music and audio books I plug in there as it is compatible with the head unit. I'm unsure if it was Subaru's intention but the slot you had business cards in on the center console has been used as a cell phone holder. if you're a camper you can fold the rear seats down and fit a twin air mattress in there. Finally, the design and layout of the temperature control dials were to support easy operation with snow gloves on.
Thank you again for your help! I will let my niece to drive both( NX, Rav 4). Will let her decide and keep you in the loop. I know the Rav 4 would be more economical. But I also like NX flush interior. Keep up the great auto reviews. 🇺🇸👍🏻👍🏻 Btw, I really enjoy driving the challenger hellcat. Thanks to you. Alex-- This is my first American muscle car. so comfortable. Your 2009 challenger review did it for me. I'd always drive German cars.(Porsche). I took my gt3 RS for service when I got home. I sat in the Hellcat, the width of the interior make it really comfortable and I feel safe on the road. It is actually longer than my cayenne S. From looking at it. It is wider than the cayenne SUV. When I get time, I want to take the hellcat to Vegas from Orange County on a Long stretch road. Vanishing Point!! Bro-- 😁
When you opt for the CVT the rear axle gets 40% off the power and front axle gets 60% as default and is equipped with active torque split AWD. The manual on the other hand is equipped with a viscous centre differential.
Thanks Alex. I always enjoy your reviews. Well written, well thought out and consistent between your reviews which makes it easier to compare. Keep up all that you do!
Alex, the blank panel you were referring to on the rear bumper is a rear Fog Light which you mentioned is for other markets. Its mandatory for Europe when there's low viability.
I test drove the crosstrek and forester base models this past weekend and was surprised at how much harder the cloth seats were in the crosstrek than the forester. The forester seats were much more soft and comfortable.
I test drove a Forester and have a friend with a Crosstrek (with cloth seats) which I ride in frequently; I fit well in the Crosstrek but just couldn't get comfortable in the Forester (seat cushion seemed too short for my legs). May just have to do with your body type.
Nicholas Riley. Thats curious, subaru sold at my place only comes with leather, i cant say that forester is too short for the legs compared to XV, but u surely sit more upright in the forester
I believe that it is worth mentioning that the AWD system in the manual transmission model is different from the CVT model. I believe it is 50-50 all the time. Great review. I rally wanted to buy this car but the road noise is just too much for me.
fyi, the hybrid is more like a limited with standard rear radar lane change assist safety features, but without eyesite (which we didn't want) it also has cloth seats, (which we did want) and keyless, auto climate control and the added hp of the hybrid. As a bonus we get crazy mileage, 41mpg from dfw to mem for instance.
Thank you very much for the video, it is nice as usual. Hopefully, you can get well soon. On the other hand, I thought Crosstrek hybrid is no longer on sell, it is good to have another hybrid SUV on the market. Thanks again!!!!
have always enjoyed reviews.very informative and to the point. what i want added to this review is your impression with regards to interior and exterior night lighting since i consider this a safety issue.
Any chance you can get your hands on the newly updated 2017 Forester or Outback? Supposedly Subaru has gone to some lengths to reduce the cabin noise. I would interested in hearing your impressions.
Alex, I have been following your reviews for the last few years and find them the most informative. Can you please do a review on the compleletey revised Subaru Crosstrek 2018? Thanks and would be looking forward to your views.
That raised sill in the cargo area eliminates it for me. It makes it harder to pull out and put in cargo, and make it very uncomfortable to sit (and if you hike, you know how useful flat floor is when you change your boots before and after the hike).
Nice review Alex! I wonder if Subaru will update the Crosstrek alongside the upcoming redesigned Impreza. I am also loving the new setup of your videos. Very easily understandable and it keeps my attention.
Alex, your car reviews are detailed, very informative technically and otherwise. I really enjoy watching them. I am looking forward to your review of the newly released Toyota CH-R, with CVT and 4WD. Grateful if you could tell us the difference between the Subarus CVT with 4WD and the Toyota CH-R CVT with 4WD.
Of course the Crosstrek feels bigger & more grown-up than the other sub-compact crossovers. It's more of a compact per the U.S. EPA, which defines compact hatches/crossovers at 165 to 177 inches long, and crossovers at 173 to 177 with international models. It is also based off the compact Impreza platform (like the Impreza hatch), while the HRV is based off the sub-compact Fit platform. I can understand it's market intent, and why most folks would cross-shop this with the subcompacts.
You know, I never realized that Crosstrek was this long. If it's longer than Renegade, then it's positively big, because I have a Wrangler that is smaller than Renegade.
Alex, I like the Crosstrek but I think it needs a more powerful engine option. I understand that they are going for economy but more hp and tq would not hurt.
Great video Alex! I'm still having trouble deciding between the Crosstrek or the Hr-v for my next car. I can't click on the infotainment banner because the pause button/video progress bar keeps popping up. Could you move the banner to the top or the left of the screen for future videos?
I find it funny your comments on cabin noise as this was a complaint Subaru recieved on the earlier models which they attempted to address with thicker window glass and an insulated fire wall in the 2016 version. I've heard handling gets even better if you add a strut and sway bar. Rumor is the 2017 model's starlink system will have android. Which is sad. Still this is a great platform for the camper, biking, hiking types.
Eye-Sight also works if you can't see, in a recent test including manufacturers like Audi, Volvo, BMW,... Subaru Eye-Sight was the only system that recognized people wearing dark clothes in the dark and always avoided hitting them.
It did work better than other systems for recognizing people, however that's because the others don't use radar for pedestrian detection, they use a single camera for that. In fog and rain the radar systems detect traffic more reliably and sooner than the EyeSight system.
Alex, great review as always but one minor point of clarification. From the illustration you make with your hands, you suggest that the pistons are moving against each other in the engine when in reality the pistons on a boxer engine, this one included, move away from each other as a boxer would. Again, a minor point but one that is important to understand, especially if any of your viewers are unfamiliar with a boxer engine. Thx.
I'd say the 500x with AWD is more capable in off the road situations - as the Fiat has a high amount of ground clearance. And I'd say a more sophisticated AWD system. But I suppose I'm slightly biased ;-). Hope you feel better soon.
Alex, I own a 2016 Crosstrek Premium. My question to you is do you think this car needs a little more HP? Sometimes I feel like my car doesn't have enough lane passing power.
I never say no to more power. I really wish Subaru would make the Forester XT's 2.0L turbo optional in every model. I suspect they couldn't build enough however.
+Alex on Autos I found the XT to be surprisingly fast when I took it for a test drive. Incidentally, the Forester and Crosstrek share the same platform, yes?
I have heard that an addition benefit of the hybrid crossover is extra insulation so the cabin is quieter. Did you drive a hybrid? If so does it make a difference. I really like this auto.
I recently upgraded from a 2001 outback with nearly 300,000 miles on it to a brand new 2016 crosstrek. I love it everything about it. this is, BY FAR, the best review ive seen on this car. thank you
This review was super in depth. Awesome job man. Really helped me as this vehicle is a major contender in the cars i am looking at.
It was the deepest.
sir, your reviews have always been awesome and you keep improving by adding new stuff. Loved your review. Glad you finally came back to the Crosstrek after all these years.
Your vids just keep getting better, Alex!

2theredline used to be my go to channel but Alex...your video is far more informative and fun to watch
I just bought a 2016 Crosstrek Limited (with no extras beyond the Limited trim) in Mexico for $24K out the door. I settled on the Subaru for the off-road capabilities. Great review!
The eyesight system is an amazing development. Truly a revolution in safety.
That small square insert in the back bumper is only for JDM or EDM markets as it has a brake fog light due to safety
I just bought one. I live close to the Adirondack park and this will be perfect for exploring!
This was a great review, thanks! I’m not old enough for driving yet but I’m soooo close so I’ve been starting to look at cars and this review really helped me thank you so much!

I prefer how you are doing the "Compare" segment with this video. Keep it up.
This works fabulous in Canada winter, It helps you get out of the snow easily and squeeze in the pile of the snow if you park along side the city road
Just bought the higher end automatic version I love my Subaru !
Wow, so comprehensive, thanks very much. I'm buying a secondhand XV here in NZ and am so looking forward to driving it.
you're one of the best journalists so far I really like your defection to the vehicle and how are you squirt all over best yet so far thank you
"not really sure what this little square thing is here in the middle of the rear bumper"
Could it be for a tow/haul package?
In foreign markets cars are required to have a rear fog light and is usually just left on
It is the rear cross traffic sensor
It's a fog lamp, its required and wanted in europe usually and Japan too.
That blank piece in the lower-middle part of the rear bumper is for the rear fog light.
Or you know the hidden trailer hitch location
Amazing review!!! Perfect! I suggest anyone getting this also add the Pedal Commander that’s meant for this specific car. It opens it up! Makes it FUN! I promise. The square box is a cover for the hitch attachment, mine had one included.
I love my 2016 Crosstrek.
Traded in a 2014 Ford Escape.
get well soon
Thank you again for your help! I will let my niece to drive both( NX, Rav 4). Will let her decide and keep you in the loop. I know the Rav 4 would be more economical. But I also like NX flush interior.

Probably the best review i've seen so far. Thank you.
I bought one just recently. The ride is good. engine is kinda noisy a bit. Acceleration is the best. Handling is a ok. best in gas mileage.
this is the review I was looking for many years, you've got my sub Alex great work
Thanks Alex.
Top notch content. Absolutely love your reviews.
I'm trying to decide between the HRV and the Crosstrek. Awesome video. Thank you!
What did u pick?
Alex you are looking very fit from your first few videos. Good on you. and you look great!
That little body colored cover plate in the center of the rear bumper is where you attach a lightweight trailer hitch in other counties like Ireland.
I test drove the crosstrek and forester base models this past weekend and was surprised at how much harder the cloth seats were in the crosstrek than the forester. The forester seats were much more soft and comfortable.
i didnt go for the forester xt turbo... i still regret that decision... the xt turbo is just awesome... powaaahhhh

I am between this and a Jeep Renegade. Had no idea compact-crossovers had manual transmission.
great review as usual, Alex.

Good choice 👍

basically perfect for my lifestyle, but Subaru needs to add some nutts to this pig. WRX or STI version please
Trunk comfort index for the win
have always enjoyed reviews.very informative and to the point. what i want added to this review is your impression with regards to interior and exterior night lighting since i consider this a safety issue.

Totally. Please review the 2017 3.6L Touring Outback
Cabin noise? If you want a silent cabin spend $300K or turn the radio on like everybody else does.
Looks more like a shooting brake design rather than a CUV to my eye. I kinda like it.
The middle lamp in the rear bumper on this vehicle here in Germany is the rear fog lamp which is required all around Europe.
Please do a review on a updated 2018 crosstrek
whom is this guy? lol the intro confused me. I was like ummm where is his glasses lol great video as always Alex thank you sir

Very detailed review. Excellent video.
You do a nice thorough review. Keep up the good work.
Pretty sure that spot in the back you said is for "other world markets" is for a trailer hitch.
You know, I never realized that Crosstrek was this long. If it's longer than Renegade, then it's positively big, because I have a Wrangler that is smaller than Renegade.
That rectangle in the back is for a rear camera! I have it in Mine.
best xtrek review
Excellent, excellent review Alex, thanks.
Very clear explanation and review.
Love it, looks like this is the vehicle I'm going to get.
Can you please review 2017 Santa Fe XL, luxury model preferably. Your reviews are the best without any doubt.
Hey Alex, would you do an Audio section on these videos? I think your channel is phenomenal by the way.
Great work, but it's long past time you reviewed a WRX!
Alex I like your videos and I think that it would be really nice to test the new mini John Cooper Works!
Alex, I like the Crosstrek but I think it needs a more powerful engine option. I understand that they are going for economy but more hp and tq would not hurt.
I'm going to get one tomorrow
Great video Alex! I'm still having trouble deciding between the Crosstrek or the Hr-v for my next car. I can't click on the infotainment banner because the pause button/video progress bar keeps popping up. Could you move the banner to the top or the left of the screen for future videos?
I find it funny your comments on cabin noise as this was a complaint Subaru recieved on the earlier models which they attempted to address with thicker window glass and an insulated fire wall in the 2016 version. I've heard handling gets even better if you add a strut and sway bar. Rumor is the 2017 model's starlink system will have android. We are mid run in the production cycle of this vehicle and I believe it will change drastically when Subaru goes to the universal vehicle frame they are talking about. I have a 2014 Crosstrek and I do think it's under powered but that's the trade off for the fuel economy Subaru was targeting. Currently they haven't announced any plans for a turbo model. Which is sad. Still this is a great platform for the camper, biking, hiking types.
Also, I read Subaru quietly discontinued production on the Hybrid Crosstrek this year.
the little rear square is for a rear fog light or an extra brake light depending on how you wire it.
I wish all of these had just a bit more power. The power in the Juke is great though
Will you review the 2018 Crosstrek soon?
if you could have this 2016 crosstrek or the 2016 Honda hr-v with awd and cvt which would you choose?great review btw! very informative
love this review
Eye-Sight also works if you can't see, in a recent test including manufacturers like Audi, Volvo, BMW,... Subaru Eye-Sight was the only system that recognized people wearing dark clothes in the dark and always avoided hitting them.

That square is for the rear fog light. You can buy one aftermarket for mad JDM street cred points
Hi Alex, will you be reviewing the 2018 Crosstrek?
Get better soon
Great review video
Alex.🤓🖒
when or are you going to review
the Mitsubishi
Outlander and also the Sports trim?
Any plans for another crosstrek review for the updates with the 2018 model?
Alex, great review as always but one minor point of clarification. From the illustration you make with your hands, you suggest that the pistons are moving against each other in the engine when in reality the pistons on a boxer engine, this one included, move away from each other as a boxer would. Again, a minor point but one that is important to understand, especially if any of your viewers are unfamiliar with a boxer engine. Thx.
It depends on how you think about it but I agree that if my elbows rotated 180 degrees then it would make more sense for then to have been out turned.
Agreed. Matter of perspective. Thx.
I'd say the 500x with AWD is more capable in off the road situations - as the Fiat has a high amount of ground clearance. And I'd say a more sophisticated AWD system. But I suppose I'm slightly biased ;-). Hope you feel better soon.
Excellent review.
Amazing review! I was wondering if you could show the key for each car you review? They have some pretty interesting ones out there.
The 2.5 might be a better option with sufficient power, less of an economy hit and cost.
+Alex on Autos I found the XT to be surprisingly fast when I took it for a test drive. Incidentally, the Forester and Crosstrek share the same platform, yes?
I agree. I wish they would make the 2.5 an option.
Agreed, more power would be awesome. But other than that no real complaints about this car. I think this car will do well in these Alaskan winters.
Any chance of reviewing the Outback as well?
Seconded. I would really like to see a review of the 2017 Outback
3rd!!! Please review the 2017 3.6L Touring Subaru Outback
B TYC 2017 Subaru crosstrek review and road test
