Thank you Gina for your continued interest in this channel. I would expect spring in NW PA to be 2-3 weeks behind my county in SW Ohio so you can look foward to these alternate leafed dogwoods blooming in a couple weeks. Good luck with your search for these beautiful trees...they are more common in the Great Lakes, Northern Appalachians and Southern Canada than in the Ohio Valley.

I planted one on my property about 10 years ago and it's one of my favorite trees (or large shrubs) I have. Mine is grown as a single-trunk tree. There is nothing else like it and it's the first thing people ask about when they come to my house because not a lot of people plant them. In a home landscape with a little more sun than the understory of a forest, the flower show is incredible, and lasts for quite some time. Only caveat is you have to give it room to grow horizontally, because that's what it does, and what makes it so unique looking.

Thank you for watching! I agree these Alternate Leaf Dogwoods are unique and very impressive when in bloom. I don't think I have ever seen them for sale at a garden center...perhaps further north where they are more common in nature? Best wishes

I found one of these yesterday. New it was a dogwood by the leaf, but never saw the flower before. Kind of looks like the inside cluster of a Japanese snowball.

Thanks for watching Kevin...I walked by the tree in this video many times but did not notice it was a different type of dogwood until it flowered. Found many more of these alternate leaf dogwoods yesterday while hiking in the Indiana hill country! I hope the coyotes spared the fawn in your latest video.

We have one in full bloom mid June (the unusual one!) in central Maine. Google lens agrees with you what we have huddled under an oak tree next to an old rockwall. I didn't have a clue but gave the google lens search feature a try and it seems to have lead me to you! Your enthusiasm was delightful :) If the ticks were't so bad I'd go on another walkabout...

Thanks for watching! I walked right by the alternate leaf dogwood in this video dozens of times but did not notice it until it started blooming. They become much more common as you go north so I would expect to find them in Maine (I found alot of them on Mount Greylock Massachusetts last week that were just finishing blooming). You tree should get dozens of small berries on each flower cluster that start out green but turn blue as they ripen. Gray dogwood has similar flowers to the alternate leaf but it's berries turn white. Good Luck!

I wonder what trees might be opposite leaved with alternate branching, or vice versa.
I can’t think of any but I’m awful with trees... but I’m in the right place!

@@barkinuptherighttree4698 yea, I’d never thought about it once until I heard you clarify it.
      Fun to think about

I believe the dogwood you have discovered that does not have the typical dogwood blossom is a viburnum. Their leaves are very similar but are alternate leaved instead of opposite. There are many varieties of viburnum, the one you show looks like a arrowood viburnum.

Thanks for watching...I agree this dogwood flower closely resembles those of many species of viburnum. After recording the Alternate Leaf Dogwood at Fort Ancient I discovered Roughleaf Dogwood blooming in June with flowers also similar to viburnums. These later blooming dogwoods are less noticed since they flower after leafout in contrast to the large striking flowers of Flowering Dogwood.

No, it's cornus alternifolia, or pagoda dogwood. I have one in my yard, and it's definitely that.

How much of that woodlands is native vs invasive?
    Thanks for the upload

Thanks for watching. I recorded this video at the Fort Ancient State Memorial here in Warren County Ohio. Totaling over 500 acres it has several large tracts of what I call 'Good Woods' that are free of invasive honeysuckle, olive and multiflora rose. Much of this land was too steep to farm or pasture so the woods were well established before the invasives arrived. These nuisance plants have a hard time getting established in mature woods thanks to the deep shade.

Nice dogwood info again! I did a shout out for your channel on my latest video of milling my last water hickory log. Hope you don’t loose too many subscribers!

Thanks for watching and the shout out Triple T...I just watched your skillful sawing of your Water Hickory. The bark on the sawlog does resemble photos of Water Hickory bark so hopefully it has been accurately identified. The heartwood is especially handsome but I don't know how easy it is to dry hickory or work with it in the woodshop. I am starting to find some Roughleaf Dogwood in the edge areas around here...the range maps show it growing in East Texas as well.

@@barkinuptherighttree4698 I thought I recognized the rough leaf dogwood. I will now keep my eyes peeled for it!
