The "fold away the extra hair you don't need" thing may be a game changer. I run a 1904 historic house anf struggle with puff shaping...then again, based on photos, so did lots of people.
This was fascinating. I came upon this video by chance as I'm getting into historical dress making from the Victorian era and your video was a suggested video. I'm so glad it was too!
Thank you and I'm so glad it was suggested to you. There are a few Victorian looks here (all pretty simple, as was the look of the time). Have fun with your looks :)
Thank you! It's fascinating all the history of the different styles. I was looking for something that would help me improve in my work as a theatre make-up artist and hairdresser. This really helped me. ❤❤❤ Thank you!
In many cases hair was not cut that often so there was a lot more to play with. But in any period in history, society, you either have money or you don't. So people would work with what they had. Many pieces were used ( as I show in my other tutorials). Thanks so much for watching :)
Finding this three years after its made and its still an amazing reference, its answered all of my questions about how to create the basic look - thank you so much!
Wonderful. I improvise getting my hair up with a ponytail in the center of the head leaving volume all around. Needs some hairspray but works for me. Has to, no one does it for me except on Christmas when I ask the hairdresser to do it the professional way. Long earings from the 1900s and one is ready for Christmas.
Thank you for this alternative method of doing this. I did similar steps for the first half of this video, but with that top knot I used a small donut and just donut the shape for that loose end. I never thought of using pins and the thumb to do the knot at the top. Thank you again for this.
Thank you so much, I'm glad this was useful to you. There are always alternative finishes in any period of hairdressing and fashion, so I'm glad you are adding your personal finish to the look :)
Someone should make wigs in this style (some of us don’t have nice enough hair to do it). Its very pretty, and I love wearing hats but my hair is sparse, fine, babysoft.
I enjoyed this very much. It was most informative and helpful! I restore old dolls and I have a few that require this beautiful hairstyle. They have mohair and human hair wigs. I will share with my sister, as she does the same. Thank you
Noted! If hair was, for some reason short in that period. Hair extensions and transformations would have made up for the lack of natural length in man cases :)
Thank you! Well done!! What a beautiful and complete tutorial! I’m sorry some people are so rude. They should be ashamed of themselves. You are taking your time to share your skills and experience and they are benefiting from you. Don’t mind them. 💕 And I remember Phyllis Diller!
This is so gorgeous, yours is the best video of this style which I'm going to try and recreate on myself. I recognise your Australian accent, I'm in the Blue Mountains NSW. I wish you were going to be doing my hair instead of me 😂
You did such a fantastic job, the hair is absolutely beautiful, and I love your talk! You are so knowledgable and so interesting to listen to! So happy I found this video and tutorial!
I'm working on an Edwardian cosplay and needed a proper tutorial. Went through half a dozen before finding this one..wish the algorithm had suggested it first! This was fantastic! Thank you!
Well; I'm so glad you found me in the end haha! And I'm really pleased the instruction I shared has been of use. I'm sure your hairstyle will bring the whole look together magnificently for you. Have fun! :)
It’s unlikely I’ll ever need to do any of this unless my daughter develops a love of acting or historical reenactment, but I could listen to you talk all day long 😁 I do enjoy doing hair but my twins are 1 so I’m lucky to get a ponytail in her hair to keep it out of her eyes right now!
Just found your channel! Love it ! It would be fabulous if you did a transformation video. I dint have enough saved hair to do one made yet and would love to see what I could use. Please. Thank you so much !!!!
Hello Edward, Could you be so kind to tell me if the back combing is for straight hair only? I have very curly hair . Even though it is fine hair I have a lot with lovely body. I would love to work this style into my hair styling choices also maybe I should look into the Gibson hairstyle. Thank you so much. Maureen
Hi MoMo. Back Combing can be used on all hair types. But if you wish not to backcomb, you could always use a pad that matches you hair colour or even a hairpiece to fill the hair out. Curly or wavy hair was very popular for these looks so you should be fine. I also talk about "drawing" in other videos (this is using your own hair to make a matching pad to fill you hair out. Hope this helps :)

This is a superb tutorial. I’ve been so fascinated with Edwardian style lately and this has been very educational…thank you
Thank you so much for your support, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Stay tuned, I have more Edwardian looks on the way in the coming weeks :)
@@martinthillier Can you do one with a similar style without backcombing?
@@brendakauffman2222 I will try and get that done for you; thank you for the suggestion

Wow! And I thought there should have been some kind of hair rolls to gain this volume

That's why women needed a maid. Very nice❤
Haha! true for the more elaborate looks; but the majority had to fend for themselves with a simple loose bun or Gibson
A beautiful tutorial. I can tell you are a master your craft. Well done!
Thank you so much; I am flattered and so pleased you enjoyed this tutorial

I have extremely fine, thin and barely shoulder length hair. I would like to see an Edwardian style utilizing hair that is short

Are you using the more open hair PINS or Bobby pins?

I loved Phillis Diller.
I would love to see how to make transformations.
I do discuss this during one of my other 'Edwardian videos' :)
I’m thinking of trying that on myself. Wish me luck.😂
Good luck with that :)
thanks for sharing! I'll definitely try this one on myself
Looks lovely 🥰 I tried it and wish you do more hair very soon.for long hair. Thanks 😊
Masterfully done, stunning!
Absolutely beautiful.
Thank you very much!

Haha! You little ones sound adorable! Well one of the look coming up is Edwardian children, so maybe when they are older 😁 Thanks for watching
This is so helpful. I will be doing hair for a production of Hello Dolly and I'm doing some research to prepare.
That's fabulous, I'm so glad t was helpful :) My friend is doing the hair for The Gilded Age at the moment; all great periods for hair.
Love it, thank u!!
Lovely
Thank you so much
I was wondering if you can do a gibson girl updo with a wig. for people who dont have long hair.
I will see what I can do for you. :) Sorry for late reply, I have been working internationally.

Thank you for your response Martin. I've been practicing a bit. Once I get this down I'll let you know. 😉
Please forgive me Martin. I made a mistake with your name. So sorry...
HAHA! No problem :)
I hope Dillon Mulvainy never sees this!!😳😉
??? why?
Love your lockdown attitude! Mine wasn’t as good as yours for sure🥲. But we made it!
Yes we did! :))
