Edwardian Hair seems to be made for me and everyone elso who rolls out of bed looking like hagrid and is the proof that you can look undone and elegant at the same time. deal with that, late 90ies and 21th century sleek hairstyles-people!!

I used to wear my hair in a certain bun in middle school and my grandmother would always say how I look like her mother in law! My middle school bun was similar to the Gibson girl look. I'd just put my head upside down and make a little bun, and when flipped back upright all the hair around the bun was somewhat poofy/doughnut shape.

Yes. Of course. Nobody has hair they peeled from their brush or braids from their last haircut in a ziploc bag on the dresser. That'd be odd. I, a normal person, couldn't imagine doing that.

Regarding pins and having a lasting hairstyle, I never use elastics and make everything hold together by knowing how to weave the pins in the bun (as a bonus, practicing it makes one more adept at hiding the pins) _and_ by working with textured hair thanks to hair oil and powder (because I wash my hair once a week and powder it mid-week to keep it nice and tidy).
I can run with my hairdo and it won't move a millimeter because it's well-secured thanks to these two factors.

bangs were still worn in the edwardian era the tended to be shorter and weren't as popular as in the previous decade but my great-great-grandmother wore micro bangs on the side of her head and i've seen quite a few pictures of the era where women wore very frizzy face framing pieces

This is so helpful! I love Edwardian styles, but though my hair is long-ish (waist length, about halfway to where I’d ideally like it to be), it’s super, super fine! And it’s also curly, which makes it harder, actually. Because getting those big bits of fluff at the front- it doesn’t work as well because my hair goes everywhere, but because it’s so fine, it leaves big gaps.
I think the dry shampoo and teasing trick will work. I think I’ll also buy a bunch of hair donuts, cut them, and sew them together to make one really big hair rat. I tried with a stocking, but it’s too light a colour, which means it shows through my fine hair.

Kudos for addressing the travails of the fine/thin/straight follicle bunch. Recent gastro surgeries did cost some temporary hair loss. So yes, did save shed follicles to make perfect match pump/ bump additions. Nylon net @ fabric stores or dissected bath scrubbies in compatible color shades can substitute for donuts.

Thank you for this. My 10 year old daughter has to dress like Willa Cather for school. There are so many pictures of the front of these styles, but finding good pictures of the back has been hard. My daughter does have long enough hair to wrap around her head. I wish the Coco Chanel look was something the author had worn! I'm super excited to see what we can get done for her performance.

I loved the hairstyles! So airy and effortless looking. And the aesthetics in this video are so nice and well tought. Flowers, the blouse, even the soft yellow light. The only thing i would change would be the "visibility" of your hair. I know how hard it is to show hairstyles with dark hair but i can hardly see the braids in the last milkmaid style.

Love this. I used to LOVE looking at the hairstyles (and clothes) from this era. The whole 'Gibson girl' look was fascinating to me. Unfortunately, I never ever had the hair for it, but now days, with the addition of hair extensions and pieces, I probably could have. Maybe one of these days, as I get more into historybounding, I'll invest in some decent wigs that I can do stuff like this to. (My own hair I gave up on. Due to thyroid issues, I think, it's SUPER fine and I lose so much of it, there's not a ton there. So I ended up chopping it rather short. It was better than long and thin. :P But wigs. . .could give it back. Sorta. Kinda. Ok, not really, but it's better than nothing. lol)

You mention you have fine hair and you backcomb it a lot - thus you get many tangles. I have learned that a olive oil applied to the tangles as you begin to wash your hair, slips those tangles out. Then shampoo and condition as normal, and it combs out like a dream.

If you backcomb/tease your hair the 2 best ways to get the knots out is first, begin brushing your hair at the ends and slowly moving up the hair in small increments, never try to brush a knot out beginning at the root. Or second, if you put your fingers in at the root under the back combing and wiggle your fingers side to side until it comes loose.

I am an individual who has a ziploc bag full of my hair. About 40 odd years ago I had long heavy hair and migraines. Since I was too young for the medications that the doctor could have prescribed he suggested that I cut off my long hair so that the "weight" did not trigger a migraine. My Mother was horrified because we had a ritual where she would brush my long hair and braid it and or put it up or a combination of both. When the hair dresser cut my hair my Mother saved it. (I forgot to add that he was wrong because I still had migraines with short hair.) and as I never grew my hair out beyond shoulder length, those styles were very important in the 80's and 90's, my Mother held on to it. As my hair began to gray she pulled the bag out of her "Hope" chest and gave it to me so my hairdresser could match my original color. Unfortunately my hair was a golden brown with red, copper and dark blonde highlights so we both colored and highlighted my hair. The cost to keep this up was outrageous, and my fine hair became so fragile that I simply colored it and a few years ago started to grow it out. Since I was home bound during the pandemic and I have a lot of hats I let it grow out and I am now experimenting with the new generation of Hennas. Once my hair was completely gray and getting longer, as is my friend's, we have decided once we get the base color we like we will start low light because you can't lighten hair with Henna. We are having a blast. I've even figured out how to lighten henna but I don't want to get into that here. So very long story to explain how some people do have bags of their own hair.

Because she has a big fluffy bow in the neap of her neck. I wear my hair like the first style nearly everyday. I didn't realize it was Edwardian.

Any one have tips for very straight hair that even when dirty it does Not hold the volume of teasing/back combing? My individual hairs are so thick that it's just so heavy and goes flat immediately

As someone who has very thin, straight and fine hair, Edwardian styles are a lot of work. Back combing and curls don't stay in my hair very well either. I usually end up using a lot of faux hair , faux hair rats and every manner of clip in hair I can find to fill in thin spots that should be poofy.

Pride and Prejudice takes place nearly 100 years before the start of the Edwardian Era.

What kind of hair extensions do you use? I've been trying to figure out what kind to get and I have no idea! Lol
