      We have done protective style in the black community for centuries. Braids, wigs, twist, feedins, etc. The key with textured hair is moisture, dry hair breaks, no grease or oil will make your hair grow any faster. Also invest in a quality shampoo/conditioner/leave in, and trim as needed. Also limit heat. Remember straight fabrics of hair the oils slide down, with kinks and coils it does not.

    Important factors that have influenced hair care: historically, hair was washed more rarely, and with softer water (rain water or water from a well). Nowadays, we have much harder water with additions (chlorine etc). In order to avoid soap scum build-up, we use modern detergents which strip much more oil from the scalp and hair than the soaps used historically.
    Also, we use hot water and work up a lather etc, influenced by hair "care" commercials.
    By washing it less - with cooler water - gentle detergents or diluted detergents or soap - by filtering water so it's softer - and by adding oils, we can grow our hair much longer. I've tried it and it works.

    • @StellaWaldvogel
      @StellaWaldvogel 4 месяца назад +4

      Hair was washed more rarely because the shampoos stripped away the oil. I remember Prell, it was like Dawn dish soap! And you could get detangling creme rinses, but no conditioner. So people only washed their hair about once a week.

    Fact. As a teenager I desperately wanted hip length hair, but could never quite get to waist length. Later, when my kids were little, I started wearing my hair in a single plait in the back for practical reasons and it shot down to mid-thigh! I finally cut it into a late 30's-early 40's long bob because people always wanted to touch it. Strangers would walk up behind me and PUT THEIR HANDS ON MY HAIR. I'd spin around ready to fight for my life and it was just some idiot complimenting my hair. So I don't wear it like that any more. But protective hairstyles do work, they do what products don't.

      @hvnterly8388 Год назад +15

      Same. I have thin hair that looks okay grown out, but even when it’s shoulder length, it’s not terribly thick. I’m thinking of doing a half/half hair care style, where I do the protective styles as much as I can, but also keep my hair short/medium length. Even when my hair is just to the ends of my shoulder blades, I start getting frequent headaches and neck pain, regardless if it’s been up, down, or braided 😢

    • @Gomba13
      @Gomba13 Год назад +19

      What do you get headaches from? If you do a proper updo, it shouldn't hurt. A proper updo doesn't pull hair taut, pulling hair taut leads to breakage and damage to hair follicles on top of being uncomfortable. I use updos all the time to compensate for fine hair which is more prone to damage by virtue of being fine, but I don't have any discomfort because I always have a mind to not stress my hair or scalp. An example is using elastic bands with hooks at the ends instead of classic elastics, not brushing hair when it is wet, and avoiding any tension when styling. The only discomfort à ever experience is getting an itch under an updo, which is challenging to scratch without messing up your hair.

      @@BryannaGordin99 I get migraines really easy as well and they definitely are made worse when I put my hair in certain types of updo. I think the issue with the bun is that the weight and tension is all in one place. I prefer to make several braids and do a crown style (like what she wears in this video) because that evenly distributes the weight all the way around my head, stays in place better throughout the day, and since I also wear a head covering for religious reasons it keeps my covering in place better (I realize that’s not a factor for a lot of people, but I thought I’d mention it). It actually is less prone to giving me a migraine that just wearing a regular braid or even loose.

    I am 62 years old. My hair is about an inch below the back of my knees. I have had long hair all my life as far back as I can remember. Last short hairdo, I was 5 years old and my mother gave me a pixie cut and I hated it. I trim it once a year and take off a half inch. I treat my hair like each strand is a goddess and deserves special, gentle treatment. I shower daily, however I shampoo my hair 3 times a week, never more than that so it doesn't get too stripped of natural oils hair needs. I will not use commercial brand name hair products on my hair. I'm old school and use old school methods I learned when my great grandmother was alive. I am so blessed she lived to 107. I learned so much from her and passed that knowledge down to my kids and grandkids. I've decided the only way I am going to cut my hair (short - shoulder length) now, will be the day I can no longer care for my hair myself. Until then - I still have (at the least) another decade (10 years) left or longer, of these extra long reddish brown locks first. And amazingly, very little grey hair on my head and I haven't colored it since I was in my 30's, half a lifetime ago.

The one important thing i have done that now, a bit late in the piece, i regret, is constantly wearing ponytails. Traction alopecia is real folks, and my hairline has paid the price. However, after realising i was damaging the follicles I started looking after it by separating the front section. It hasn't receded further. I'm even hopeful with a bit of extra care, I can retrieve it! Thanks to you and your invaluable advice. Subbed! 😘😘😘

    Glad you made this video. A lot of women are seeing these images of Victorian women with super long hair. The culture back in those days was different than now on how people looked at hair being down on grown woman. I once read that a woman going out in public with her hair down was like going out in her underwear! That is hard for us women to get these days but, if you notice most of the photos of these women were done inside a house or studio setting. In fact, it was such a "very personal thing" that even prostitutes weren't usually photographed with there hair down The idea of you taking your hair down was kind of something that a woman did in a bedroom situation and probably just for her husband's eyes only. Glad that you mentioned the hair care. I call it hair vacation days. Just keeping your hair up and protected. Love the videos you produce I find them very educational. Have a blessed day!

    Our family has been researching ancestral food & health for 10+ years (diet/nutrition definitely has something to do with modern hair health, in my opinion!). I've always thought there must be something better for our hair, too, so I was glad to find your hair video series. I moved to the Canadian prairies many years ago and have always felt that my hair should not be exposed to the dry winter air. I've been wanting to learn how to do my hair up nicely, but have always had pain from the ponytails/buns. My scalp is sensitive, so even bobby pins touching puts some pressure on that ends up causing pain. I'm looking forward to your tutorials and sure appreciate the educational info you include, too. It's good to know the "why." Thanks! - Katie

    Some folks may find, as I did, that combing my hair with a very large gap comb was much better for my hair than brushing it, which seemed to pull out too many hairs. Also I have found that an updo is actually way faster to get done than a short hairstyle, that requires a lot of curling or blowing dry and shaping. I’m glad when I was a young mom I didn’t cut off my hair “ to save time”. I’ve saved a ton of money not getting my hair trimmed regularly and a lot of time not fussing over the style. My hair is below my waist.

      Exactly - brushes really damage your hair. I can't bear to see someone wildly using a brush! Wide tooth combs are the way to go.
      After coming mine with such, I then use a finer toothed comb to smooth it out. Then I put it into a plait. I've never had trouble growing very long hair. 😊

      I cut my own hair into a short bob, any split ends I get I just trim immediately. I would never be able to force myself into doing updos, spending extra money on products (since more hair means more shampoo and conditioner used), or go into a hair salon for trims.
      Both long and short hair is easy for various people. For me, short hair genuinely is saving me time and money.

    I knew my great grandma. She said they went to the pharmacy and got a chemical powder that was then brushed through their hair. The dirt and oil stuck to the power, and when they brushed it the dirt and oil out with it. She was born in 1885 and moved from one end of Missouri to the other in a covered wagon, and she and her brother had to dig the family well when they moved because they were the smallest and fit in there better as it got deeper.
    She never said what chemicals were in the powder. The modern dry shampoo stuff just gums up my hair at the roots, so I doubt it’s the same contents.

My hair is so fine, I've always worn it either in a bun or in a braid, otherwise it tangles horribly, but I had never realized that braids are not a protective hair style. That makes so much sense! I'm looking forward to the demonstration of several protective hair styles, and I hope you will show at least one that can be worn with either a hat or a riding helmet. I'm often out in the sun during the summer, and am very careful about exposing my skin to the UV rays, but that's when I would always wear a single braid down my back. Hi Isabelle, if you have some hairlength already you can tape your braids instead of using elastics, and if you do two braids instead of one and bind them over your crown you can fit them inside a riding helmet without fearing that a bobby-pin dislodges and gets stuck into your skull in the event of a fall.
      Morgan Donner used to do that before she cut her hair off, so you might want to have a look at her videos on yt from a year ago.
      In my riding helmet there is also a lining I can adjust so I have more room above my head to put the hair through…I‘ve been putting my simple braid through there to stop it from catching on my security vest.

There's such thing as too much of a good thing.

    Realising that the ballerina bun I've habitually been doing since childhood is actually a protective style. Nice!

    Excited about the next video! I had to cut my hair to shoulder length to start over and I have no idea how to wear it to protect it now that it’s so short😭

    I am so glad I came across your videos. Been growing hair long for years now. I've been doing the curly hair girl method and have been dealing with exactly what you said. Also having the alopecia from years of ponytails and messy buns. So looking forward to starting this new method. Thank you.

    This makes sense. My little sister always has her hair in a braid. It is almost past her knees. Thank you ! Will start right now!

    I’m so excited to try protective styles! I recently started a house cleaning business and my perma-messy-bun is definitely damaging my hair. Thank you!!!

    Ahh this is very informative! Subscribed! I thought a simple braid was protective. I didn't realise it had to be pinned up and away from the body. I pulled out a hair pin as soon as I got to that part of the video haha.
    I have hair that doesn't grow past my shoulder blades and I've begun to change how I care for my hair. My dream is to have hip length hair that I can put in beautiful historical styles ❤❤ (I'm a huge Georgian, Victorian nut)

    I just want to say that I’ve found your videos to be really inspiring. For several years I’ve been trying to go more natural with my hair care, and the success has been mostly a mixed bag. A few months ago, in a fit of frustration I decided to have my hair cut off in a medium lob cut. I was going through some things at home and just didn’t have the time or energy to properly care for it. I do regret it a little now, since I haven’t been able to wear my hair up in a bun or French twist like before. I’ve seen you other videos and decided to start over and give it another go.

    Your hairdo in this video is so lovely on you. In Sweden we call it Margareta braids. I forgot to comment on you skin routine. Your skin is truly glowing. Actually, you don't really need any makeup because you're beautiful without it. However, I do know we all feel nice to have some makeup. Especially if we're going out etc. Thanks for all historical information! It's fascinating! Love 🌹💗

    After researching for a few years now, this is a perfect video for those getting into seriously growing their hair. Awesome resource and great information. 👏 I hope to see more videos, I would love to see the ones you have mentioned. I have looked into the LHC (long hair community), and it is good, but not user friendly for everyone. I would love to see examples or creative ideas for protective hair styles and natural hair treatments!

    I definitely what to explore this more and wear protective styles more often! I already do some historical hairstyles but I don’t do them every day! So i will be doing that more in the future as well as other protective styles!

    My hair is like that, it just stopped growing once it reached my lower back and it's just stayed that length now for about 2 years. Thank you for this video! I'm going to be trying some protective hairstyles and changing to henna dye instead of commercial dyes

    THis was VERY helpful! I wear my hair in braids a lot as, what I thought was, a protective style. My hair is down to, say, mid ribcage. It was down to my waist by I had the ends cut because they were so dry and damaged.
    I had never considered that my braids were actually damaging my ends! (Which they surely were, due to the elastics I used). I can't wait to check out more of your videos on protective hair styles!

    My hair is very similar to yours...can't wait to see next video on how to do these protective styles. They would b perfect for me, as I would wear them more often than not. I need to wear up for work and generally wear down for special occasions only. Guilty of going from regular braid to ponytail to bun though, so, I'm really not protecting like I thought. Thank u!

    So glad I found you! First off you are Stunning 😍.
    Well, 49 year-old woman going through menopause so I'm losing a lot of hair
    5 years ago I had breast cancer and my hair never came back fully it's very thing on the top of the head. As if not enough, Couple accidents accidents last year where my hair caught on fire so I pretty much shaved it off it's now shoulder length and I want to make sure that that the hair I get back is healthy and beautiful so I changed my shampoo to the Viori bars, reduced the washing frequency to twice a week and because of you started oiling my hair. The night before washing I hope I can achieve that. I always had long hair and I want that back I have a few problems like I got disabled due to the cancer treatment and now I have use of only one hand witch complicates hair styling specially....
    Anyways thank you so much. Jeep it up , your videos are awesome 👍
