I would like to add that Victorian ladies and those that came before them saved all the loose hair that shed into their brushes. They would take a bunch when they had saved enough, bunch and ball it up a bit, rat it a bit so it will loosely stay together and then use it in their rolls to add more volume. I suppose in today's market you could also do the same with some loose weave you may have lying about. Great way to stay true to your natural color and fill in the rolls. The store bought rolls never match well.
Yes, this!! The resulting wad of hair was called a 'rat' and it was brilliant for adding volume. Rats were used throughout history, not just the Victorian period.
I knew an elderly lady who told me this back in the 90s. she had a collection of antiques and she had this beautiful dish on her vanity and told me it was where they would keep their lost hair to shove back in to give a fuller look. I still love history and she was a major part of me getting into it!
Thank you. Tights are such a good idea. Yes, in this era they used all sorts of stuff to give their hair the shape they needed, from natural hair rats to crazy looking frames, I think it's easy to look back and think ' WOW how did they manage that? They managed it with help - just like us!. Thank you for the tip xx
I've been looking for a tutorial like this for AGES! ever since I was a little girl, and i watched anne of green gables I've been obsessed with this hair style! Thank you so much!! :D
My mom suggested this style for my wedding day next year, and I have to admit I'm totally impressed. :-) :-) I do plan on having this style and you make it look so easy :-) ... I just hope a hair stylist has the ability to make it happen. Thank you for making this old-timey hairstyle new again.
Heather Baden This is such a perfect wedding 'do. It looks easy because it is! I'm sure your stylist wiill have no problems and that you will look absolutely stunning. I would love love love to see a picture xxx
Thank You, Fitfully Vintage, for showing me how to make this style! You made it short, sweet, and easy to follow. Wish I could say that for more How To videos! My hair looks best messy and I've always wanted to try something like this. Stay well.
Natalie, I still can't decide if you are more beautiful or more skilled! The hair styles you present underline your natural beauty so well... You should wear it every day! That's one thing. Secondly - finally somebody got to the original recipes and showed, how they did it over a century ago. This "historical authenticity" is a really strong side of your presentations for me. I couldn't do it myself due to my luck of imagination in this field;) I'm an amateur passionate of 19th and first half of 20th century fashion and have been looking for this type of tutorial forever. So thank you, Natalie and keep doing it!:)
Beautifully done! Looking through these hairstyles, yours seems to be the prettiest, and are made to seem the simplest to do. I intend to try these! Thanks so much for making the videos:)
Thank you for your request. Her hair is beautiful throughout isn't it?! I have had a look at the ball scene and it is pretty tricky to see the detail at the back but I will keep trying and let you know when I have it. Thank you again x
It has now been a week since I got married and everyone in attendance loved my hair! It stayed in place the whole night through (with lots of bobby pins and hair spray of course😁) but the only thing is, I am unable to load a pic through here. Is there a Facebook page I can send you one or two?
Thanks for making this video! My little girls have read about Gibson Girls in some classic literature and were begging me to learn how to do their hair like the girls in their books. This was SO helpful! Thanks a million!
Thank you so much for uploading this Edwardian hairstyle. I have been looking for a tutorial on yt that shows a replica of this hairstyle and now I can practice creating it in my hair. It is so simple. And of course the Edwardian era has always been my favorite.
thank you so much for this tutorial. I actually have a Victorian themed photoshoot tomorrow and this would be perfect for the outfit I have planned out, & I like that it wasn't too complicated. :)
This years Elf Fantasy Fair I'm dressed up as a Edwardian woman. I've been guessing for weeks what to do with my hair until someone showed me this video. Thank you for the tutorial, really helped me!! :)
just did a gibson girl photoshoot and this was a life saver. I have extremely straight hair, so I was worried that this wouldnt work. so I slept in curlers, putting them in the same direction as this tutorial has you do the actual rolls. so basically, just toward the top center of my head. then I pulled out the curlers and followed this tutorial and it worked brilliantly.
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for posting. As a seeker of vintage style I feel like I've hit the how-to jackpot here! But that rolling technique... that will take practice :)
you have such nice hair!!! its never occurred to me to wear this updo considering i love all things vintage.. its quite lovely :) thanks a heap for sharing it!!
+The burning Senpai i did a school project last year,it was inspired by 100 years of beauty and i have reaaally thin and straight hair but the hairstyle worked and looked great :)
Tease it and comb over how I did my beehives everyday for school. After setting on rollers nightly U got use to sleeping on rollers my hair was fine but thick. Never cut hair.
Thank you for posting this! I have a Victorian living history Camp coming up this summer and I was hopeless for a while on finding out what to do with my hair until I found this! Can't wait to try this.
Fabulous! I was sure my fine hair wouldn't cooperate for this gorgeous style but it came out great! I think using a rat on the backside will help fill that area out better. Looking forward to rocking this style whenever I can. Thank you for helping me decide *not* to cut my hair!
Thanks so much for sharing. I wear my hair in a bun everyday. I didn't know how to make it look puffier all around. then one day buy chance it gathered my pony tail as usual but did not put a pony tail holder in. I just twisted it and put one clip on either side. I had an everyday Gibson girl. Elizabeth
It just looks beautiful!!!!, I´m going to use this style for a roman event in spain. Great tutorial!!!! You make it easy to do ;). Love it!!! Thanx a lot!!! :D
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I've always wanted to dress my hair up in victorian style but finding the right instructions have been horrible. But you, you've made it clear to understand and fun to watch because i also get to *see* how it's being made ect. So again, thanks a mill. :D
I've just seen your Steampunk tutorial - I feel totally ignorant because I didn't know the name of that genre . Very inspirational. Would you mind if I put a link to your channel from my channel page please?
Actually I liked the way women dressed and had their hair in the Edwardian Victorian age. Of course it was the style of dress & the corset but they did look elegant at the time.
oh my god!!!! this is exactly he tutorial I've been looking for!!! my school performance is next week set on the 1850's and I had NO IDEA how i was going to do my hair!!! I'm definitely going to do this!!! thank you so much for this video! this is amazing :D
I shaved my head in April of 2017 for pediatric cancer. It's now August of 2018 & my hair is shoulder length & very layered. It's been 1 year & 4 months of growing out my hair! I have been taking excellent care of my hair, by the way. It's not damaged at all. I never style it with heat or use heat to dry it. I never bleach it. I never dye it with permanent dye. I dyed it black last week with henna hair dye which is semi permanent...It really suits my Victorian, goth style/Victorian, funeral parlor outfits.
Wow that looks fantastic! I might just have to try that one myself some time. Awesome video ;-) First one of yours that I've watched and I really like what I see :-)
LADIES... These Victorian and Edwardian hair styles are Excellent. I'm commenting from a man's point of view. Not only that, but you need not add products to your naturally beautiful hair. The Gibson hair style looks quite nice. The simple braids look quite nice as well.
Excellent tutorial- clear, to the point, no vacuous or repetitive chatter, good camera angles, and a brilliant hairstyle.
I'm really pleased with that. thank you.
I've always loved her hair tutorials for that.So vintage and beautiful!😆

I'm sure glad we don't do that anymore!
Charlie Daniels Why not? It's your own hair and you can give it a wash if you need to.
The clumps?
I knew an elderly lady who told me this back in the 90s. she had a collection of antiques and she had this beautiful dish on her vanity and told me it was where they would keep their lost hair to shove back in to give a fuller look.
