Been putting this task off as I had never replaced anything with the tub faucets before and was reluctant to try it. This video made the job so easy! I couldn't believe how easy it was to repair and not a single drip now. The old seals I removed didn't look like there was anything wrong with them, but I replaced both of them anyway. So glad to get the job done! Thanks for a great video--easy to fix and I am sure I saved at least a couple hundred dollars. If I can do this at age 68 (grandma), anybody can do it!
Am coming here after six years this video was posted and you have saved me a lot of money which the plumbing company were charging me, thank you so much God bless you.
thank you a ton! had a leaking tub faucet and was quoted by a plumber for $800! Found this video and followed it step by step and now the leak is gone and I'm only $6 out of pocket - you're the best!
Thanks so much for this - single mom of 15 yrs. and lived in log cabin for 22 yrs. so used to DYI. Recently all kids on their own in army/college/etc. and decided to move to a cheaper state thank NJ. Moved into a flipped property so knew everything was done on the cheap BUT did not expect to have toilet leaking into Kitchen (when that was my one walk-away that was supposedly fixed) and shower leaking into walls (which I only discovered by dripping into kitchen below). This saved me not just the plumber's cost of what I knew I could fix, but the cost of new faucet. Just had to replace the parts. While I will eventually redo the whole bathroom, not at $ to do so now as I've only been in the house 2 months, and dealing with all these issues while I should be job hunting in a new state and town. Had 1st toilet issue (reseat on new wax seal) done by a professional (beyond my ability), and now dealing with second toilet issue of it backing up into my kitchen via sink and laundry hookup....wish me luck and again THANK YOU
You sir have just saved this single mom so much trouble, money and most importantly STRESS!!! Thank You Thank You so very much for this video!:) My dad recently moved away and was my go to when my house had any problems but thanks to watching him over the years and your video I just fixed my tub...MYSELF!:D
Thanks for the video. One additional tip. When trying to seat the seal/spring, I discovered that a flathead screwdriver can damage the seal. I used the eraser end of a no.#2 pencil to seat the seal and it worked fine.
I thought I totally broke my shower trying to fix a leak. I was about to spend a lot of money on a plumber but then I found this. I said, wait a minute, did I flip the valve the wrong way? I didn't realize orientation mattered until I saw your video. You saved me money, guy! Much appreciated.
Amen, brother. My husband has talents in other areas than repairman, so it falls on me to make all repairs or call in a professional. I have to learn everything. I appreciate videos like this to guide me through repairs. They have saved us thousands of dollars over our 50-year marriage.
This is a GREAT tutorial! My dad would have been the one to fix this but he passed away a few years ago. I think of myself as handy so I'm giving it a try. Thank you! You did a great job on this video!
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you. My tub faucet has been dripping for years and I kept putting it off thinking that it would be such a hassle to fix it. I was wrong it was very easy thanks for showing me how.
Same here still leaking we are elderly and anything is a hassle to try to fix ourselves and no one wants to help us for a small fee. Can't afford plumber's
5 years been trying to get someone to fix our leak in the bathtub. It runs continuously cold. Being elderly it's hard to get someone to help t a reasonable price 😕. So i said I'm yt see if i can at least try. Wish me luck. Thanks for helping us poor folks out.❤🙏
Helpful! When I pulled the stem out, taking care to note the orientation like you said, I noticed that the stem had a small alignment tab on each side, and the fitting it goes into had a notch on each side. The tabs fit into the notches and that assures correct alignment.
Very helpful video. The cold water from the faucet of my shower unit stopped flowing. I took it apart with the help of this video and soaked it in vinegar to remove the lime scale build up and voila! Working again. Probably saved me at least a hundred dollars in plumber fees. Thank you.
Finally a video that explains where the boot and spring go. I was taking the little metal piece off and putting them inside that and putting the piece back on.. thank you so so much. Single moms club.
I’m only about half way through the video and I want to say thank you. For a long time the plastic part that the handle goes into worked but trying to get it to hold the handle and keep working, it would not do. I used to take a wrench and screw the plastic piece to get cold water but then that part stopped working. I finally turned the metal extension piece today and the tub faucet began running cold water. I’m not looking forward to shutting off my water - I live in a 1965 trailer so there isn’t any shut off valves for just the bathroom - for who knows how long to find out which piece I need but at least now I know a little more and can take cold showers during the summer again.
Very well done and helpful. One addition - to help get the springs and seats in place in one step, I used a phillips screwdriver with a shaft slightly smaller than the hole in the seat. I put a tight fitting rubber washer on the screwdriver shaft about an inch from the tip. Then I placed the seat with the spring in it on the shaft. The rubber washer was tight enough than when I inserted the spring and seat into the hole - the rubber washer didn't slip back up the shaft and I was able to push the spring and seat in place in one step.
that is a great idea. Today I tried to repair the shower leak and the darn seats and spring kept falling out! One fell behind between the walls. I hope this can work.
Finally a video for this type of stem. Every other video has a metal stem or doesn't show everything we needed to know. We were putting the spring back in upside down! Not even the tech support from the parts we bought even helped. Thanks dude!
Drip fixed. I did modify your procedure in one respect. While installing the new seal and spring I was having problems sliding them into place and seeing what I was doing. I switched to a zip tie from a screw driver. This gave me space to see inside the valve and use my finger to slide the seal and spring into place. I put a slight bend in the zip tie about 2 inches up from the point so the parts could not easily slide off till ready. Thanks for your video.
I know this is something said literally years ago but I'm obviously just now having issues and subsequently researching the best route and I am obviously here NOW commenting because my dumbass literally just did this last night AND I ain't even fkn fixed or got the replacement faucet yet....like literally my pipes froze and exploded after I'd been in the hospital for days and weak and hadn't slept and it had to be like 20 minutes after I got in and was dozing on my bed and by the time I realized my cat was tryna warn me I now have the next RC motorboat venue in my basement about 2 inches and recededing enough to probably be gone by the time we solve poverty.
Very good explanation with good camera work. I would just recommend soaking the parts in a solution of white vinegar and baking soda. It works wonders for descaling.
Thank you so much for your help because I been trying to fix my shower for awhile and watching your RUclips video helped me out in finishing my project.
Thanks a bunch. This fixed my leak. Water coming out was cold so I changed cold side first. Still has drip so did the hot side and it stopped it. Thanks for taking time to post this video
Thank you HandyGuy! Your instructions are so clear, uncomplicated, focused, and calm. I have spent hours trying to find adequate DIY instructions and attempting to fix it with no luck and with a lot of headache. After watching your video I was able to successfully complete the installment in 5 minutes. I can't thank you enough. I wish you the greatest success.
Thanks man, my cold water in my shower just stopped turning on, valve must be broken or whatever, this just made me much more confident to go ahead and fix it myself. Thanks
Thank you so much. This helped me complete a repair I’ve been putting off for at least 10 years. Very well done! Mine was set further in the wall and I used my fly fishing hemostats to pull out the old seal and spring. And your screwdriver trick was perfect for getting it back in again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Tip for Seat and spring installation. Seat and spring kept falling and would not stay put during install. Assemble seat and spring as one unit before sticking inside pipe. Put the Bottom of spring , the base of cone shape spring, inside the seat. Make the spring and seat as one unit. Use screwdriver to guide it in hole. Use finger to apply pressure on seat. This should make the seat and spring stay put.
I can not get the seat and spring to stay in. The hole is so small I can barely get my finger in there to push it and when I do the seat won't go all the way in and falls out
Another tip to get past @kelseymelton1783 ‘s issue - when putting the seal/spring assembly in with a Phillips screwdriver, the assembly kept sliding up the screwdriver when I was trying to force it in. So, I wrapped some duct tape around the screwdriver to prevent it from sliding up. Then, i twisted the assembly around to try and get all of the seal lip inserted, and used a flat head to push in the parts of the lip that wouldn’t go inl
Thanks for the video - very helpful. I got toward the end where you can pop out the plastic cartridge. Mine was stuck. Could see from your video that I didn't need to unscrew anything, it just needed to be worked at a little. Who's got two thumbs and a shower that no longer leaks? This guy.
I'm working on mine right now and the little white cartridge was stuck for me too. I got it out by screwing the long screw that holds the water knob back into the hole of the cartridge and turned the screw gently until it stopped. Then, I very gently tugged the screw with my hand until it popped out. I know this response is late, but hopefully it helps someone.
Thank you for your video on replacing bathtub seats. I like to review before doing seats on a bathtub leak. The video is user friendly, built my confidence in using three tools to complete the taper spring and seat replacement.
Thank you, this was exactly the demonstration I needed to follow. Used a screwdriver and eraser tip pencil for the spring and seal install sequence. Purchased Delta RP1740 faucet repair kit from local hardware store.
Thank you!! My mother had this leak (very bad) her water bill was coming super high. Found your video and fixed it!! Changed both like you said. So easy! Thanks 🙏 again!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH ! I wish I had known this the last time I had to do this , the technique using two screwdrivers actually used an ink pen to hold the washer and a screwdriver to push it off and I had put soap around the hole to help it go in the last time a year ago the spring would not stay in so I had to expand the large end of it with two pair of needle-nose pliers multi-tools. It's amazing how something so simple can be so frustrating :(
GREAT video! Followed along and fixed my leak in less than 30 minutes (once I got the correct parts from Ace Hardware- my fault!). Thank you for making this easy-to-follow tutorial!
Excellent video. The other video I watched did not mention replacing the seat and spring. I replaced both cartridges and still had a drip. The folks at ACE did not know what to do with those parts in the kit either. Now I can replace the seat and spring.
Great help. Thank you. I used a 1/4 drive, 11/32 deep well socket to push the seat and spring off of the Philips screw driver. This gave complete coverage of the seat while inserting into the faucet. Thank you.
BRAVOOOO!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I am headed to ACE to buy an overpriced Faucet Repair Kit (or 2) and probably a pair of channel locks since I can’t find any of the 1/2 dozen that we have already and give this a go! Oh God, I’m nervous! Thank you SO much for this awesome DIY tutorial!
Thank you for taking the time to produce this video, it was very helpful in solving the leaking tub faucet in my home! I like the way you explained how to install the spring and rubber washer.
Excellent advice for beginners and pros alike Just do it Cover the drain You won't regret doing it You will regret not doing it if something you need go down it. Its like insurance You don't need it until you do
Thanks! This was very helpful. Got the cold side done on the first shot. Had to take the HOT side apart after the first try because the rubber gasket didn't seat correctly the first time.
Thank you so much for this most of the videos I've found where for a single handle setup. This turned a $200 plumer call into a $20 trip to Lowes. If the women don't find you handsome they should at least find you handy. PS: sometimes the cartridge gets stuck if that happens put the screw back in and give it a good yank.
In case someone wants to know - The tab that faces to the left, on the cold water, is the mirror opposite of the hot water. So the tab would face right, for the hot water. Learned that the hard way 😉
Oh gosh..This is good info...I forgot to note which way to orient the new cartridges...Thanks...The taps are still dripping tho' so I think I need to replace the 'seats'
Thanks, just fixed a leaky shower that has been annoying us for about 2 years. I tried cleaning out the valve, but never saw the seats! Replacing those has stopped the dripping faucet!
This video has the parts closest to what I am dealing with. However, my valve did not want to come out. I will try again. This video gave me a better idea of what to expect. Thanks.
Update: Turns out I had a Moen 1224 valve. It was quite stuck as it had been in there for 30 years. I had to loosen it with WD-40, then use a flathead screwdriver to pry it while pulling on it with a pair of pliers. On one of them the washer at the end broke off and stuck inside and I had to pick it out. My Moen model doesn't have a separate seat, so that was nice. Once I got the old ones out and was able to find the replacement parts (Lowes is the only place that had it besides Amazon), it came together nicely. Of the 15 videos I watched, yours was the most help as it was more similar to what I have.
I would suggest if you ever replace faucets, sinks etc., you add shutoff valves. Normally there's at least one main indoor shutoff so you don't have to go into the meter pit. The best thing is to add them to each faucet, toilet, dishwashers, etc. I realize this is probably a very old house, but it can be very beneficial to add them.
I totally agree! My sister lives in a double wide. She had a pipe burst last winter. She ran for the shut off valve under the trailer. Only to discover it was no longer there! They had no way to shut their water off. Thankfully the busted pipe was outside and not in. She called the trailer parks maintenance and they ran down and shut it off at the meter pit. She called a Plumber. She told him how they were puzzled as to why they no longer had a shutoff valve under their trailer. He said "Oh yeah I removed that a couple years ago. It wasn't necessary." My sister said "NOT NECESSARY? How else are we suppose to shut our water off?" He replied "Just call the park they can shut it off." I personally don't know any plumber that would be so dumb as to remove the home owners only means of shutting off their water. Especially doing so without their knowledge! I am about to do repairs on my own tub..with some help from my father and RUclips. LOL But I am for sure putting shutoff valves in each of the lines to the tub.
@@rachelgibson1858 The phrase "If it isn't broken, don't fix it.", comes to mind. Whether the plumber thought the valve wasn't necessary is irrelevant to removing it. The valve was in working order and not hurting anything by being there and he had no business removing it.
Beneficial but expensive. I do live in an old house so even though it is possible to get to the back of the faucet/pipes thru a removable piece on the wall, there is no cutoff there. What were they thinking?
adding a shutoff valve to each sink/tub valve is unnecessary. You're actually adding additional failure points. Increasing complexity in your plumbing has it's downsides.
I figured that there must be a trick to getting the spring and seat to stay in place so I went online and saw how you did it with a screw driver. I took it a step further and cut a 4" section of 3/8 rigid sink supply tube and slid the screwdriver into that and then the seat and spring and it made a perfect ram to set seat in place rightly and evenly.
@@ricolewis2949 after you put the rubber seal and the spring on the end of the Phillips head screwdriver just wrap some tape behind it so it won't slide back. Then you don't need the second screwdriver to push the spring and seal in place. Just push it in.
Perfect video...I actually got the cartridge n seat n spring sold together for under $10 along with your instructions here...the job was flawless and no more leak! Thank you sir for your time n great video ;)😉
Glacier Bay is the same as Delta, if by same you mean an inferior cheaply built option to Delta.... Peerless is the same as Delta, Glacier Bay is the same as Aqua Source....
The tip to get hot water up to the spout so you know which one needs replacing is a great idea. I use a Phillips head screwdriver with a thin-walled deep-well socket on the back to push the seat and spring into place. Just be sure the socket is about the same size as the seat. You can even use 2 sockets if you need to. Also, I lube the outside of the seat to help it slip in place with a coating of Chap Stick. It's wax so it doesn't eat the rubber.
I found that if you wrap black tape around the shaft of the Philips head with enough wraps to be able to put pressure on the seat while installing that it was much easier to get it in to the hole. The tape needs to be on the screwdriver up far enough so the seat and spring will just fit on. 👍
Thanks for the video, I tried channel locks to remove the outer sleeve and it would not budge that way, since it is flimsy plastic I was worried about breaking it. Thankfully I had a pipe wrench. I would recommend you have one available if yours is so corroded that you can't loosen it.
Just a tip I leaned a few years ago for shutting off the water main without the tool he used. Get an adjustable crescent wrench and hold it vertically and tighten the jaws as tight as you can on the water valve. Then use a screwdriver in the eyehole at the end of the wrench for leverage to turn it. Turn clockwise to close.
Very helpful. The leak is in the cold faucet handle not the faucet, but it looks like it is also a cartridge replacement job like shown here. I wonder if in this instance it is still necessary to turn the water heater hot valve off. Not crazy about messing with water heaters.
Hi Handyman Guy - great video on fixing the Delta Shower Tub leaks very helpful. However I have reached a stop gap on this project, at about the 5 minute point in your instructions my stem valve cartridges are stuck - I am trying everything of.... do you have a suggestion? Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you! Bc of this I realized my seat spring and seal are missing! Im a rookie and didnt turn off the water when taking the stem off (I know I am idiot), but I was only trying to replace knobs that I bought and they didnt match up with the existing thread piece. So, I thought "oh what if I take this part out... WHOOSH water shoots out and madness ensues. Now I found this video lol.
Thanks for the video. Was having issues with leaking cold side and was wondering why I can't stop it until I seen the spring and gasket was in the wrong way. Flipped both and used a #2 pencil like in the comment section said and would you look at that!! Shower working again!! You earned my sub and like for this video
Houses have a cut off either at the house, in the front yard right next to the house, or in the basement or crawlspace where the water enters the building. It's just a classic turn knob arrangement. You can just turn it off there, instead of messing with the property switch or going out and getting a key or whatever.
Thank you, because this is the part that's stumped me. Me watching this: "Wait the what now? Where is this thing? A KEY? Wait a minute, what the heck is this thing?"
Yes, my house has a cutoff in the crawl space, but it involves crawling the width of the house, past a furnace and is no fun at all. Easier to just shut it off at the street. Wishing this old house had some cutoffs to individual faucets, like in the kitchen.
Using the screwdriver to put the seat and spring back in there is a game changer! I always balanced them on the edge of my pliers and just kept trying until it worked 😂
Thanks, it’s like riding a bike that doesn’t want you on it. I appreciate the tips. Wasn’t too much trouble. One thing is, don’t forget to tighten the front nut around the stem. 😂
Thank you so much for this video, you helped me fix my shower though sadly I can't find replacement valves of this type. Does anyone know what these valves are called so I can possibly find replacements?
If you are replacing round handles like these that both turn counterclockwise to turn off with lever handles, which turn in opposite directions, would you flip the stem orientation around the other way (see 4:55) to get one of the handles to shut off counterclockwise? Or, would that just change the direction the lever pointed, but not the direction it turns to shut off? Thanks for the helpful video.

Want to thank you a bunch. Leak has been there for a while and finally, got off my ass and looked you up. Fixed!

Holy crap thank you for that, I was gonna freak out trying to get that in there, got in set in about a minute with the zip tie!
I have used this video so many times! Thanks for providing it! These faucets are so awful, I end up having to replace these cartridges every year.
I would always make sure to cover the drain with something just in case you drop a screw or washer that it doesn't go down it. :)

Thank you. I would never have known to change the gasket with the spring. And I only cried two minutes out of frustration.
Glad to help
My husband and I were trying to figure it out. I found this video and now we can use the shower. Thank you very much. ,,👍
Glad to help 😊
Thank you, this was exactly the demonstration I needed to follow. Used a screwdriver and eraser tip pencil for the spring and seal install sequence. Purchased Delta RP1740 faucet repair kit from local hardware store.
That is great!
Thank you!! My mother had this leak (very bad) her water bill was coming super high. Found your video and fixed it!! Changed both like you said. So easy! Thanks 🙏 again!
Just want to say thank you for posting this. It saved me the cost of a plumber.
Thank you for posting this video! I got the parts you showed and fixed my bathtub... Without needing a male!! Go me!!
Great help. Thank you. I used a 1/4 drive, 11/32 deep well socket to push the seat and spring off of the Philips screw driver. This gave complete coverage of the seat while inserting into the faucet. Thank you.
Hey Ken when you replaced the seat did you just push the old one back with new on front of or did you take it out first?
You are amazing! Quick easy guide saved me a huge headache! Thank you!
This was my exact problem, and it is now fixed! Thanks a million.
Thanks!!!
I was putting the seat then the spring. It was wrong. It's the spring then the seat. Change the game 100. Thank for you bro
Excellent advice for beginners and pros alike
Just do it
Cover the drain
You won't regret doing it
You will regret not doing it if something you need go down it.
Its like insurance
You don't need it until you do
Lmao this comment is awesome lol ❤️💚
You just may have saved me over a $1000 thank you so much
Glad to help.
Even if both the cold and hot spin the same direction to turn on?
Thank you thank you
Now that was a DIY HANDY MAN !! YOU THE MAN DUDE!! THANK YOU ....phew......whoa you are the guy!
Thanks, just fixed a leaky shower that has been annoying us for about 2 years. I tried cleaning out the valve, but never saw the seats! Replacing those has stopped the dripping faucet!
Hey Chris this was a great video but did he just push the old one back and put the new seats in front of it?
Thanks dude I didn’t know where the seet was supposed to go. Still had a leak after replacing yo valve , but not anymore thanks to you.
I’m here for I think the 3rd time, watching you so we can put our handle back together! Thank you, sir, for this super helpful video!
How else are we suppose to shut our water off?" He replied "Just call the park they can shut it off."
I personally don't know any plumber that would be so dumb as to remove the home owners only means of shutting off their water.
Amen
Beneficial but expensive. I do live in an old house so even though it is possible to get to the back of the faucet/pipes thru a removable piece on the wall, there is no cutoff there. What were they thinking?
adding a shutoff valve to each sink/tub valve is unnecessary. You're actually adding additional failure points. Increasing complexity in your plumbing has it's downsides.
I'd like to thank this guy for the video also did anybody else think he sounds just like Tony Stewart
Easy explanation on how to fix a faucet. Thank you this was so helpful.
Great detailed, easy to follow video! Fixed my faucet! Thank you!
Thank you thank you. I thought I was gonna have to cut a hole in my wall but this was all I needed.
If you wrap some tape behind the rubber seal on the screw diver you can just push the spring and seal on. Thanks for the helpful video!
Explain please...
The most thorough one I've seen up to now, good post. Thanks.
Good stuff. My neighbor, older guy has this problem. Hot side constant. He said f'it. I'll fix him up tomorrow.
Great video and thanks for the info! I bought o-rings not realizing the seat is what I need. Thanks again.👍😉
Thanks a lot, just repaired my bathtub faucet. Faucet was Glacier Bay from Home Depot in Canada. Same as Delta.
Good tip
Yours is the ONLY video that helped us
DYI thank you for your videos I was able to fix my bath tub stem because of your video info.. really appreciated.
We have the same faucet. To get more help to other veiwers I would put 3 handle delta in your title. This video is great. Thanks buddy
Very helpful. The leak is in the cold faucet handle not the faucet, but it looks like it is also a cartridge replacement job like shown here. I wonder if in this instance it is still necessary to turn the water heater hot valve off. Not crazy about messing with water heaters.
best intro on yt 😆, great video, learned a lot about my own faucet
Thank you for your detailed explanations, cautionary points and well done video. It was what I needed. No more leaks.
Uuuummm I was going to try and skip turning off the water...I won't since I read your comment
@@292teacher always a good move
Very good. I often replace all the parts I remove...................it sure looks better. Cost is small.
Thanks for the video. Was having issues with leaking cold side and was wondering why I can't stop it until I seen the spring and gasket was in the wrong way. Flipped both and used a #2 pencil like in the comment section said and would you look at that!! Shower working again!! You earned my sub and like for this video
Thank you
Houses have a cut off either at the house, in the front yard right next to the house, or in the basement or crawlspace where the water enters the building. It's just a classic turn knob arrangement. You can just turn it off there, instead of messing with the property switch or going out and getting a key or whatever.
Thank you, because this is the part that's stumped me.
Me watching this:
"Wait the what now? Where is this thing? A KEY? Wait a minute, what the heck is this thing?"
Glad to help
@@josephinethornton3823 I too was like uhhhhhhh say what nah...
Man I'm in need of help my shower water won't turn off turned faucets all the way off water stayed on what do I do can u please help
Thanks for the video, I'm noob at plumbing and this helped out a lot.
Thank You HandyGuy2016!!! This video helped me fix it. The trick with the screw driver, spring and washer is just what I needed.
Does anyone know what these valves are called so I can possibly find replacements?
screw drive method insert..quick and easy...great job...
I will be trying this today. Thanks for the help
Helped me realize I could do it with your guidance. Thank you!
How do you get the old seat and spring out? Just pull them out with pliers?
Thank you! This is exactly like mine. Now I can fix the drip. 💧
Thank you sir! I apreciate your sharing your knowledge! You saved me hundreds in water leaky bill! God Bless You!
