- Pete Souza is a freelance photographer in the Washington, D.C. area and Professor Emeritus of Visual Communication at Ohio University. Souza was the Chief Official White House Photographer for President Obama and the Director of the White House photo office.
In addition to the national political scene, Souza has covered stories around the world. After 9/11, he was among the first journalists to cover the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, after crossing the Hindu Kush mountains by horseback in three feet of snow.
As a freelancer, Souza photographed two stories on assignment for National Geographic Magazine and three photo essays for Life Magazine. His photographs have also been published in many other magazines and newspapers around the world including on the covers of Life, Fortune, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report.

I’ve been struggling to write a comment that expresses quite how much I admire Souza for his ability to capture moments of tenderness, sincerity, warmth, those images that sum everything going on in a single frame. The fact is, I can’t. The man is an absolute master of his craft.
I think you just did.
I remember a time when dignity and grace filled our White House.
This is what i try to teach everyone, and what everyone should remember.. THOSE are GREAT pictures. Full of Emotion and Stories.
No need for artistic shallow depth of field. Pete´s photos show that its more important to take photos of special moments, with the gear he had around. No fancy Canon 1DX or Hasselblads, 2 Cameras, 2 Lenses, sometimes a flash. Thats it. Peter really is someone i look up to.

I'm reading and loving the book OBAMA AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT photographed by Pete Souza. I'm amazed and impressed with the even indoor lighting inside the White House and other places shot by Pete. I would love to be able to get this type of lighting in some of my indoor photographs at events such as parties. Before watching this video, I was sure that the photos in this book was shot by a Leica camera because the images are so sharp! Pete let us know that he used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera with a few lenses such as the new Canon 24-70mm lens.
