Hi David, here is a tip for you regarding horsehair: make yourself a couple of hand carding tools like the ones used for wool. Make them the shape - but a bit larger- than your webbing stretcher and fix the nails so it looks like two hair brushes. It won't be the last time you have to reuse old horsehair, and next time it will take you a lot shorter time to loosen the stuffing after washing it. Oh, and one more thing; in order to keep a happy marriage, if you keep washing 150 year old horse hair in the washing machine you might want to clean out the little sive at the bottom of the machine once in a while (at least, we have that solution on the washing machines here in Norway) so that your wife does'nt go totally librarian on you, as Sir Terry Pratchett would have said! :) Brilliant result as always by the way! xxx to you both and Daisy from Mette in Kongsberg, Norway:)
Hi Mette. You know what, after I separated the horsehair by hand I stood there and thought I should have made something to make that easier! Thanks so much for the tip on carding tools, I’ll have a look and make some 😀👍 I’ll double check the washing machine filter too before Emma dies 🤣🤣🤣❤️
Beautiful chair. Your fabric choice is exquisite. ♥️ I went down a rabbit hole with the initials of JF and I think I have a lead for you (or not). Anyway, I found the name JF Johnson who designed furniture for the London manufacturer, Heal & Sons. There is a chair in the Victoria and Albert Museum with a similar cane back - exposed tacks around it (It’s not a bobbin chair). I could be way off but since my background is in research this was fun.
Wow, thanks so much Marti for taking the time to look into this. You’ve given me a lead to have a look at now. I love to know the history of a piece if I find a makers mark. Thanks again 😀😀👍👍
If you're going to repair and renovate old furniture BIG TIP nails and screws that have been in the wood a long time form a bond. To remove them EASY place an electric soldering iron on the head it expands them and breaks the bond. When they cool its really easy to pull nails or unscrew screws NICE VID
Absolutely gorgeous! I love both pieces, but the work and skill it took to breathe life back into the chair was a true labour of love. Well done - great work and a joy to watch you and Daisy.
You sir are a true Master Craftsman. Your patience and perseverance is second to none. BTW, Daisy loves her corks like humans like chewing gum. It is better than chewing on a stick that could damage her teeth. Cheers!
Such beautiful work to place in a beautiful home. You are a master at restoration and you do incredible work each time. I hope you fill your home with restorations for generations to enjoy 😊 Daisy is so lovely my two fur babies wait patiently to see her on your videos. The chair is incredible. You did an amazing job once again. ❤
I absolutely love it and I’ve never owned a genuine antique before. I have a beautiful Solid Tiger Oak desk that you may have seen a glimpse of at the start of the video. I’ve got my name on that too 🤣🤣😀❤️
Both pieces turned out lovely and they go together quite well, almost as if they were meant to be together. That fabric absolutely makes the look even more special!
You’ve done an amazing job and it’s now a beautiful chair. Bonus points for your patience and skill on the reeding and also for dealing with that terrible horsehair! I hope you kept the needlework from the footstool-it was beautiful. And…thanks for our dose of darlin’ Daisy and her corks. 🥰 You are becoming one of my favorite channels.
What a lovely comment and Thankyou for your continued support. I have kept the needlepoint upholstery and hope to use it for something in the future 😀🐶❤️
Once more you prove your worth as a skilful craftsman with true artistic flair. Much as I respect your idea of keeping the horsehair, I would NOT have allowed it in my washing machine. Respect to you wife for allowing that. Every time that I see gorgeous, happy, lively Daisy, my face breaks into a big smile. Wish she was mine.
Hi Pamela. My wife wasn’t ecstatic with me using the washer but she’s a love and agreed. Thanks so much for your lovely comments about Daisy, she’s a little gem 😀😀
They look like they belong to each other. I enjoyed every minute of this video. Justso happens a friend of mine is recovering some chairs i am sharing this video with her
The cane repair is so good! I'm so glad you chose to do a repair instead of ripping out the hand woven caning. Love the fabric and the nailhead trim. Great job.
Amazing job as always! I admire your patience with the reed. It must be super satisfying to complete something that was so difficult! You did a great job matching the stain on both pieces and the upholstery looks fantastic! The new upholstery on the chair is absolutely light years better than what was on there previously too! Daisy's appearance is the best! Such great content! Thanks for sharing all your hard work! It's made my Sunday much nicer!😊🐕
I’m so glad you didn’t replace the original rattan. The repair job you did was well worth the seven hours it took. Great explanation of how to fix the seating as well. 💕
You pulled out all the stops on this transformation, and it shows. I had to grit my teeth watching you re-weave the rattan caning; it looked like trying to remedy ancient embroidery with new stitches. Again, your attention to detail made the day. (I made all most of my own clothes for almost 30 years, so I know about detail and dexterity.) The fabric choice is perfect for the style of the chair and footstool - it's just lovely. And thank you, of course, for our "Dose of Daisy." She's a charmer with her floppy, curly ears. I'm glad that you're seeing increased interest in your channel after the dueling projects with Jay. You'll hit 20,000 in no time. Thanks for the visit to your shop. Cheers from Oklahoma!!!
Hi Maribob. The weaving part of the restoration was definitely the most challenging but I’m really glad I did it rather than leaving it as it was. So pleased you like the fabric as I wasn’t sure how well it would be received although I love it. Daisy is actually going for a haircut tomorrow so she’ll be looking posh in the next video. Thanks for your continued support 😀🐶❤️
Oh my goodness, it's beautiful! Love the fabric an the weaving is very good. Can't tell the old from the new! I've tried weaving and it's no joke for sure! The foot stool looks really good with the chair. You did a fabulous job on both pieces. They'll be beautiful in your home for many years! Very impressive and your hard work paid off in the end! 😊
I really appreciate you leaving many of the original dings and scratches in the final piece. It shows its age and restoration history. Excellent as always. And though not a dog lover as per se', Daisy is adorable! I'm a cat person, like your drawer flipping buddy! :)
Outstanding transformation, the chair has such character you brought it back to life 🙌🙌🙌. You did a great job on repairing the weave, that was a tough one but well worth the effort. The foot stool looks like it really belongs with the chair. ❤️
What a beautiful restoration! I’m so glad you were able to revitalize the old horse hair stuffing and huge kudos for patching the old caning. Rich finish, beautiful fabric and detail, lovely coordinating footstool, and a new lease for a period piece. Great job! 👍
Excellent video, I wish you all the success in growing your channel. I was concerned the light blue fabric would clash with the reddish tones in the wood, but the effect is quite striking.
Wow just wow you took on some VERY difficult things there and pulled them off beautifully ❤ As I said in the live even Trena from John's furniture repair gets someone else to do the rattan type work so you are mega in my view 😊 Also her latest video is 1hr 14 mins and I love watching them that long Thomas Johnson does them that long too. 20k is yours 😁👍
Aww Thankyou so much. That is a huge compliment and I’ve been watching Trena and Tom for a while now and have learned so much from them. Thanks for your great support, I really do appreciate it 😀🐶❤️
Magnificent restorations, they are beautiful. I have refinished furniture for over 50 years and I know how frustrating and at the same time so worthwhile. Now I’m 85 and no longer do this work.
Hi Patricia and thank you so much for your lovely comment which means a great deal coming from somebody that has refinished furniture for half a century. I love what I do and wish I'd found my passion for this much earlier on. 😀😀
Thanks again David. Beautiful and a definitely a labor of love. As a person who has only refinished one piece of furniture in my life, at about age 12, combined with my RUclips watching, qualities me as an expert. That being said, what do you think about sanding that shitty filler off, treating with wood strengthener, then fill with normal filler? As I said, I really know what I'm talking about 😂😂😂
It’s beautiful! I love the fabric. However, I was wondering if you kept the needlepoint fabric from the stool. I hope so. It would be nice to clean and maybe frame it or turn it into a pillow. It would be a shame to throw it away.
@@MayfieldRestorations Oh, good. I was going to suggest selling it or giving it away if you didn't plan to keep it. I've never done needlepoint, but I've done enough similar needlework to know a lot of time and effort went into that. It'd even be nice framed if you don't have an upholstery use for it.
Absolutely beautiful restoration. Well done Sir! Your basket weaving was spot on. As well as the staining. You’re keeping a real treasure. The Upolstery fabric was lovely.
You are doing an amazing job with the restorations! There’s a professional furniture restorer’s channel called AT Restoration, he does a lot of upholstery work, it may be helpful for your future projects.
Hi Julia, I’ve been a fan of AT Restorations for some time now and he is actually one of my subscribers which is a huge compliment! He is brilliant at what he does and has taught me a lot😀👍❤️
Well done David and Daisy. Love how you handled the edges with the blue ribbon before applying the tack strip. I wouldn't have been able prevent myself from re-reeding the back panel completely before colouring down, always good to develope a new skill if time isn't an issue. 👏👏👍
Excellent job with the caning! The foot stool cover looked like hand embroidery or needlepoint. I hope you didn't throw it out. Otherwise, a great job!
Chair frame looks fabulous, and your weaving repair is excellent too - BUT, I don't like the fabric, too big a pattern for the size of the seat, and to me it looks upside down - ie, the leaves etc are hanging down instead of pointing up. That studding in a strip is brilliant. I'm still a fan of your channel though - just my opinion. Thanks for sharing your skills. Take care 🙂
I like the pattern, but I agree that it looks upside down. My Mum did that once with wallpaper in our bathroom...didn't notice that the paisley print was pointing down until she was nearly done.
Hi Michael. I’m always open to peoples opinion when they express them like you have. Thanks for being constructive and I appreciate the fabric is not everyone’s personal taste 😀👍
Howdy Maestro!! You've made that chair into a throne befitting any king! You're the king of your castle & now you have a seat of authority to show for it!!! BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the rattan repair you did. You can't really tell where you repaired unless you're looking for it. The little footstool looks like it belongs with the chair. Great job!!
David, you have the patience of a Saint..I would have thrown in the towel at the removal of the old fabric..lol turned out magnificent..big hug to Daisy, can't wait to see neighbors little dog. Thanks for the entertaining video!!
Hi Kim, it certainly tried my patience at times but I was glad I persevered. You’ll love Mabel, she’s so cute and very cheeky. I’ve already told my neighbours I’d like to feature her in a future video and they are happy for her to make a guest appearance 😂🐶❤️
Wow! Both pieces turned out beautifully. And I am immensely impressed by your cane repair. I didn't think it looked too bad as it was, but your repair really made a big difference. I love that you kept as much original as you could. Great job!
That is stunning! What a brilliant addition to your home. I appreciate your creative solutions to the “tack & staple” difficulties. The way the pattern on the chair seat kind of flows onto the foot stool is wonderful!
That cane woven repairs was so worth the time and sanity to do. My grandpa didn’t manage to teach me how to do that in his time. He did manage to teach me the basics in upholstery and if I were you I wouldn’t worry about tack holes. Some chairs I’ve seen are nearly sieves. The other handy skill my grandpa taught me was French polishing. I have done a burr walnut veneered small table and when finished it looked as if there was a sheet of glass on it. I was so happy with it. It looked beautiful Keep up with your hard work as I find your channel probably the best on here.
I love hearing about the things your Grandpa taught you. Grandads are the best!!! I’ve tried “proper” French polishing on another piece and I was rubbish at it but I know with practice I’d get better. Although my grandad was a true inspiration to me he never actually taught me any specific skills, I’ve never had any formal training in what I do, I just have a go at pretty much anything and try to get better as I go. Thanks for your kind comments about my work. 😀❤️
Wow David you have excelled your self, all your work is awesome but was this restoration was phenomenal. The fabric was beautiful and showed your artistic flair off really well, amazing work. Glad to see Daisy supervising as usual.
Hi Freyja. You always leave such lovely comments and I really appreciate it. So pleased you enjoyed this video, it was a tough job but I love the chair now it’s finished. Thanks for your continued support 😀🐶❤️
It turned out beautiful! You do have patience though. I don’t think I could have persevered. Aww Daisy 💗💗 Can’t wait to see the neighbors dog. We love our Penny Lane. 😊
Thank you Barbara, it definitely tried my patience 😂😊 Little Mabel is really cute so hopefully I’ll get her to make a guest appearance in the next video 😀🐶❤️
I love furniture restoration videos. I often keep them on in the background when working from home. This one caught my attention because it's upholstery! My grandparents worked for decades as upholsterers, so I have a soft spot for the craft! You even made your own webbing stretcher. How cool! I am delighted by the matching footstool. What an amazing transformation! Well done!
Thanks so much, I’m not the best at upholstery but the more I have a go at it the more I learn. I have a real respect for people that can do it well like your grandparents. If you like upholstery video, check out a guy called Chester on RUclips, he’s amazing 😀😀👍
A beautifully finished sympathetic restoration. I'm glad you kept the bumps & wear marks that a piece with history behind it would have. I have a bobbin bed & 2 barley twist pieces that I absolutely love. A+ on the cane weaving... you have the patience of a saint 🥰 cheers
Oh my goodness that is beautiful!!! And your "basket weaving" was perfect! You are truly amazing at what you do! Always look forward to your videos and of course Daisy too.
I love the chair. And even though the footstool is not an exact match, in the end, they make a splendid set! You did a beautiful job restoring them both.
What a lovely job you have done!!! I adore that fabric!! So elegant yet alive with color. I would want to rope that off so no one could sit on it!!! The tacks on the edges really add to the look!

Hi Alla, have a go at it. I’m not brilliant at upholstery but it’s really enjoyable although the reeding work was a little challenging 😂😂😀❤️
@@MayfieldRestorations can't wait to see Mabel ..glad you did persevere as it turned out gorgeous!
Hi from the middle of California....this is a BEAUTIFUL renovation. Well, well done, and thank you for sharing!!
Hi Kay. Thanks so much for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it 😀😀
Wow! Both pieces turned out beautifully. And I am immensely impressed by your cane repair. I didn't think it looked too bad as it was, but your repair really made a big difference. I love that you kept as much original as you could. Great job!
Thank you so much Doris 😀😀
💜💜💜Loved everything about this video. Hugs to Daisy!
Hi Anita. Thanks for your support as always 😀❤️
That is stunning! What a brilliant addition to your home. I appreciate your creative solutions to the “tack & staple” difficulties. The way the pattern on the chair seat kind of flows onto the foot stool is wonderful!
Thanks so much! 😊❤️
I learned a lot from this video. Lots of work! Looks lovely.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much 😀😀
That cane woven repairs was so worth the time and sanity to do.
It looked beautiful
Keep up with your hard work as I find your channel probably the best on here.
I loved the fabric choice. The whole video was fascinating thank you!
Hi Linda, Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much 😀😀
I love furniture restoration videos.
@@MayfieldRestorations Thanks, I’ll do that!
I’m glad you persevered with the cane insert it looks just right, you did a great job 👏🏻
Hi Pat, thank you so much. I love barley twist pieces too, it shows great craftsmanship and is so interesting. 😀😀❤️
That reed work was definitely a labour of love, the difference is outstanding. 7 hours well spent!
Thanks very, it didn't seem like a good idea at the time though 🤣🤣
I love your choice of upholstery fabric! The results for the chair and the footstool are outstanding! It looks really good with the wood tones!
Thanks so much Laura 😀😀
You just repaired caning! Yay! Just like repairing wicker - tedious work but worth it.
Hi Rhonda, I know right 😀😀 it was a pain to do but really glad I attempted it 😀❤️
I think you did an amazing job of repairing the rattan!
You’re very kind, thanks 😀
Wow!! You're the epitome of patience. I'm not sure I could've done it 😂 well done!
Hi Tracy. This definitely tested my patience but I’m quite a determined person so it wasn’t beating me 😂😂😀👍
What a masterpiece I like to zoom at the nail and staple removal it's so satisfying to watch . The fabric is pretty great job
Thank you so much! 😀😀
You did a really nice job of piecing the cane work together. Good on ya for tackling it.
Thanks Joseph 😀👍
Beautiful! From the amazing wicker repair to the refinishing to the fabric choice - just gorgeous ❤
Thanks so much Rita 😀❤️
Oh my goodness that is beautiful!!! And your "basket weaving" was perfect! You are truly amazing at what you do! Always look forward to your videos and of course Daisy too.
Hi Sherri. What lovely comments, thanks so much ❤🐶

Thanks Lesley, it was an epic job but I’m glad I did it 😀😀

PERFECTIONISTS PATIENCE = PARADISE! 😊
Hi Debbe. What a great comment, thanks so much 😀😀❤️
Oh my, the fabric is gorgeous! Also it did help tying those two pieces together quite a bit.
Thanks very much 😀😀
Gorgeous work! Love the fabric 💙
Thank you! 😊
I love the chair. And even though the footstool is not an exact match, in the end, they make a splendid set! You did a beautiful job restoring them both.
Thank you! 😊
What a lovely job you have done!!! I adore that fabric!! So elegant yet alive with color. I would want to rope that off so no one could sit on it!!! The tacks on the edges really add to the look!
Thank you so much! I must admit that the chair will rarely get sat in in our house too. 😂😂❤️
