    The canon 5dmk2 was THE go to fashion camera in the early-mid 2000’s. It, as of 2020 was the most print published camera of all time, almost double the nearest competitor (nikon f2) it’s only beaten online by the iPhone purely because of the sheer volume of them. It just suddenly doesn’t become unusable because the mk4 is out it the r5/6 is out. It still produces vogue quality images now. It baffles me how people don’t understand this.

      Not only is it a fanatstic amera , it is supported by the enourmous EF mount range lenses. The other day I picked up a 24-105mm f4 IS L lens for 300$ the month before a 70-200mm f4 L, at a similar price.You can set yourself up with a professioanl body, and lenses for the cost of a modern mirrorless camera body only, wich is exactly what I am in the process of doing.
      But by all means, ifa mirrorless camera is what make you tick,and you can afford it, go for it!

I'm agree, I never liked angry photographer neither I was fan of Jason Lanier but at least from Jason you were learning something. I got into photography because of Jason and I never regret it. I was always drawn to what you can do with a camera and is fascinating and the power of expresing yourself is like never before. Also I went down the rabit hole of these affordable DSLR/Digicams with a retro/film vibe look that is hard to emulate. I believe these all cameras will go up in price/sentimental value like digicams or some film cameras did. You barely find a good one nowadays or they're quite expensive. Thank you and please do this more often.

    Love your videos. It is really good to reflect on hardware and the direction the industry is heading into. I still use A7, the original one. I have other cameras as well. I just did an event and people always asked me if I have the latest and the greatest. I don't. I know my cameras in and out. In the end, composition beats all of your gear. Here is what I found about photographers. Very much introverts, many struggle with confidence and hide behind lenses. I always enjoy meeting others and sharing. Love to complement those that have a talent. Learned quickly that is not a norm. I was recently asked to be a back up for a corporate event, after the organizer saw my photos at a party. I said sure. It was a book introduction. The original photographer stayed on and I just came to support the publisher. I brought no camera with me of any kind. Before the event I tried to chat with the photographer, after she figured out who I was, I got the coldest shoulder. It actually made me laugh. The behavior was so childlike. Not surprised about some of the youtubers either. Please have a life apart from what you are doing. Great video. Would love to hear your opinion on post editing and AI. How much is too much?

    Great conversation. I'm a long time Nikon-phile and currently am loving picking up old F-mount lenses at pennies on the dollar. The first Nikon body I purchased was in 1972 and I was shooting 90% fuji velvia film. Galen Rowell was my favorite photographer back then and he would get incredible photos using an FM body and a 24 f/2.8 lens. I would love to get anything near as good as what he was getting back then. At times I feel like I would love eye detect focus, then I come back down to earth and realize that great photos are taken by great photographers with great visions. That's when I go out and work harder to get the most out of the gear I have!
    I think of Ken Wheeler videos the same way I think of Ken Rockwell reviews. They both have a lot of knowledge but I take them with a grain of salt! Both Ken's think very highly of themselves.
    Mom bought a fridge in 1956 and it was still going strong when she passed away 14 years ago!

    I’m a fan of this channel - it’s calm, it’s sensible, it’s rational, & it’s cognisant of human nature (ie. It’s ‘Based’.) You can have a ‘based’ approach to a photography podcasting - just like you can have a ‘based’ approach to political reporting. Ps. We’ve all heard of ‘Just Stop Oil’. That’s complete madness - what would make MUCH more sense would be: ‘Just Stop Advertising!’ It’s advertising that’s making us waste resources by constantly churning all our perfectly good stuff for brand new.

    Hi Skyler, I took a bit of time to let your thoughts fully sink in before commenting.
    Myself, I have a lot of very (extremely) diverse interests, too many really for such a short lifetime, I suppose. I have been active on YT since day one. The difference between then and now is unimaginable. And the trend just continues. We have gone from having enthusiastic amateurs creating videos for the pure love of their hobby and discussing interests and ideas to share with others to a shark infested pool of click baits, subscriber numbers / financially driven content providers. That is just the uploaders. The platform itself is another whole other story…
    In this specific field, namely photography related channels, that (for me) falls into the whole wider genre of tech-related channels. That would include computers, phones, audio, gaming, all that shiny new good stuff you will find in a single mega store. The people who would love to spend every weekend in those stores lusting after all that tech are the prime audience for these YT channels. It’s all about the latest gear, the tech, not the artform or the thought process. With a small number of exceptions, if the YT algorithm allows you to find them…
    I don’t mean to offend anyone, I have no problem if tech and specs is your bag.
    But all these types of channels begin to look like clones of each other, the production values are similar, and their ‘studios’ look similar with the scripted videos, insane editing, fancy lighting, elaborate decor and well positioned pot plants (fake plants, presumably). “Like, click, subscribe, patreon” bla bla. I have unsubscribed to so many channels I used to follow, so many others just died. “Why I switched from Canon to Sony”. Followed 2 weeks later by “Why I am dropping Sony”.
    There are fewer and fewer options for me these days, despite my interests being so wide ranging. But my less ‘mainstream’ hobbies are sometimes still catered for, only in ever decreasing numbers. I am no luddite. I do love vintage tech, I have SLR film cameras, a 1970’s turntable, but also a music streamer/DAC from 2024 and the latest iPhone. Modern tech is great, I have no problem with the tech in and of itself. But that is not the issue here, is it? It is all about cynical manipulation.
    I can guess at some of the people you have approached for an interview and to be frank with you, it is no loss to me personally that they declined.
    I would much prefer to see an open and honest interview with someone like yourself, who seemingly still uploads purely for the love of it and for the connection with real people.
    You know, I would enjoy to know why you ended up in Taiwan. Why you love typewriters and old analogue “tech” so much (as you know, we have briefly communicated on this before). Are you still considering purchasing that scooter? What are your thought processes on that. How did you adapt to being a foreigner in another country (like me). Do you suffer from isolation, or do you actually enjoy that?
    What kind of line of work are you in? What you want for your kids in future. What motivates you to jump out of bed and grab a camera and head outside. Do you have any thoughts for a themed project/portfolio. Endless list.
    I don’t need your advice on what camera body to buy next if I am told I need 1 million focus points and the ability to film in 16K.
    Guess I just wanted to give you a nod and say you are not on your own.
    Keep well and safe.

    I always follow your videos. Nowadays there is a lot of concern about views and photographic equipment. Good, quality photography is possible with any camera available on the market. a 6D or a classic 5D are perfectly capable of making you money, as are crop cameras. People are very lost in the face of all the options for cameras and features.

    History has a way of sanitizing truth, I am 62 and grew up in the muscle car era, we raced and modified cars to be better and faster. Folks talk about late 60's early 70's cars like they were so much better, what they don't see is today a powerful 4 cylinder makes as much power as a muscle car V8 did back then, todays car handle better have better brakes and require less maintenance. Ask an old timer in the Sunday car show with his 69 Mopar and he will tell you how todays cars have no soul, maybe, its all relative and viewpoint driven, funny that DSLR lovers have the same "its sounds like a camera" argument as the V8 guys will tell you, "this is what power sounds like " lol

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  2 месяца назад +4

      I always found it funny how guys talk about how fast those old muscle cars were, when they were actually pretty slow by today's standards. My wife drives a modern 4 cylinder crossover that has a better 0-60, higher top speed, shorter stopping distance, and better cornering/handling than a majority of the most iconic "muscle cars". All while getting better gas mileage, being more comfortable, etc.
      Of course, the problem now is that the newest cars from more and more manufacturers are starting to really push the "planned obsolescence" aspect. Water pumps made of plastic. Multiple parts sharing a common housing (which they can't be separated from) so the failure of one part requires the replacement of the entire housing and all the parts in it. Emissions systems that lead to premature failure of the intake and valve systems. Not all brands are doing it, but more and more are.

On the one side we have channels like yours that talk sense into us but I am also weak enough to fall for the other ones that gives FOMO with any new dumb piece of gear. Thanks for speaking out what I have in mind. Takes a lot of courage also as you blew the whistle on our YTubers. I think the fact that famous photographers of our time dont ever do a gear review speaks volume. They never mention about their equipment. To me - RUclipsrs are not photographers. They are entertainers. And they sell views. Their photos are mediocre and edited heavily with their preset packs which they repeatedly tried to sell in our face. What is annoying is that the good photographers gets eclipsed by them and the YT algorithm. It is just like Ig where a random photo that gets 4 figures likes in a snowball effect simply because it is Peter Mckinnon account.

      I completely agree. I have lost track of how many times I have seen videos recommended by big channels with big followings, only to find that those videos have no real substance at all and the photos are completely lifeless. Great thought’s throughout this video. Imho RUclips has become essential to me I live a bit differently I don’t watch traditional tv being forced to sit through something I have zero interest in so with YT I can focus my viewing listening time to whatever I want when I want. I started my channel years ago as a distraction during a divorce it was awful but I like to think it’s better than it was it’s still a massive learning curve but I enjoy it. I’m still a full time news photographer 20 years this week on my current paper I love it canon all day every day never lets me down however I still have much of my old film gear so I’ll dig that out for channel content or buy ap new to me old camera and see what I can do with it. RUclips for me is never going to be a worthwhile money earner I see it as an amazing outlet for my obsession and something for my grandkids to look back on if they have time. I personally watch so many RUclipsrs and not wanting to be a knob Head but there’s a fair few out there with huge following who talk well have incredible screen presence but display pretty average photography I still watch them and hit a like because they’ve made an effort and like I say it’s good viewing yet others I prefer with low subs who are not the most polished presenters but their work inspires me to keep shooting even though I don’t need inspiration as photography is the one constant in my life. Regarding gear reviews yeah I watch lots I enjoy some but David Hancock is my go too too quality channel. Liked and subbed cheers I’ll checkout more of your content.

    First of all, props for being able to talk for an hour without using very, very few filled pauses.
    Lots of good thoughts, but towards the very end, I don't think someone shutting you down immediately equals them being a fake or a bad person. It's kinda like I was making candy in my garage and selling it in my local market because I believe in direct, local action and I don't care about becoming a multi-national company and then wondering why Mars or whoever doesn't want to spend their time on me.
    That said I wasn't on the receiving end of the e-mails from the youtubers, you were, so you know the exact words they used and I don't want what I said to take away from the rest of the video. I especially love the BMW/Canon comparison when it comes to being a product. I'm 100% with you on that one. I also believe there's very little reason to upgrade cameras now because Lightroom's AI can turn a decently well-exposed ISO3200 RAW from a 20-year-old Canon 30D into a perfectly fine image by 2024 standards. Also, SaaS is shittifying essentially everything it touches.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  2 месяца назад

      Oh, I didn't mean that they were fake because they shut me down. If someone doesn't reply to me, no big deal. Some have turned me down, but they weren't going out of their way to be rude or anything, so again, no big deal. I was specifically referring to the ones that responded by directly and sometimes creatively insulting me for even asking. Those are the ones that leave me thinking "wow, what a dick".

Then my step son gifted me his old SOny A7 and a lens that Is till my main camera. But when finances picked up al little I could not afford more lenses fro the Sony, until I discovered adapters, and now I have two Canon L lenses for it, plus a Samyang 14mm with an EF mount and plan to get a Canon EOS 5D II or a 6D, and will consider that an upgrade, even if I go back to an older dSLR. Simply because I can afford pro grade glass for the old EF system. And with adapters I can still use them on my mirrorless body if I want to carry something lighter f.eks on family outings.

    Aside from the title of my video on Kodak Gold being a lightbulb moment for you, what does my channel or myself have to do with the bulk of this video? Kinda feels like I’m being lumped in with all of the remarks about other people because I’m a “RUclipsr” but I could be mistaken.

      I wasn't trying to lump you in with anyone else. My videos are almost always shot off the cuff, with nothing scripted or planned out ahead of time. So I often will start on one thought or line of thinking and do not get back to it or finish it.
      To clarify, my general thought process while shooting this video (though I didn't articulate it fully) was that there was a time that seemed to be a golden age for RUclips photography channels. Kai & Lok, Jared Polin, Matt Granger, Gordon Laing, Tony & Chelsea, You, Matt Ballard, Blunty, Ted Forbes, Darren Miles, and many more. Fast forward to today, and some of those channels have changed focus, others aren't around anymore, some of them still focus on photography but have a radically different approach to RUclips, etc. Very few of them still feel the way they used to, like real people who genuinely just love photography and want to share it. Your channel is one that I put in the last category, which is why I guess I mentioned it in the positive light of "I was watching a Matt Day video" but then didn't mention it again once I started discussing the disappointing trends I see with a lot of current RUclips photography channels.
      Also, though I assume you don't watch my channel, your particular word choice of "nobody I would watch or align myself with" seems a bit... Odd?

    • @mattdayphoto
      @mattdayphoto 2 месяца назад

      I appreciate you clarifying that. Without saying anything specific about me after the start, I assumed it wasn’t directed towards me but I wasn’t sure. As for the other channels mentioned and in the thumbnail alongside my picture, they’re just genuinely channels I don’t watch and those that I have seen before, I wouldn’t categorize my channel with theirs. That could totally just be me and how I would hope my videos are perceived, but I’m obviously biased in that and I don’t know how people perceive my videos unless they’re a regular viewer. But I’ve seen/heard enough about “The Angry Photographer” or Jared Polin or Jason Lanier that I know I wouldn’t put my face next to theirs.

      Well, to be fair, I also have photos of Henri Cartier Bresson and Steve McCurry sharing the thumbnail with you. Along with RUclipsrs that I actually like (Amar, from CameraSutra247, Darren Miles, and Kai & Lok). I understand what you mean, though. If you prefer, I can edit the thumbnail to remove your photo?

    About the Canon subscription model: My guess is, that you will get the hardware, but probably only a "light" or basic version from the software, codecs whatever. With more premium subscription, you could get access to more software for a certain time, or even a cloud service, like adobe photoshop. But would that mean, that your camera has to be online the whole time? Will the extra functions just shut down after a certain time with no online connection?
    But at the moment, that´s only wild assumptions. We have to wait, to get the real thing. But if that will be a thing, all other brands will do the same, that´s for sure.

      @@SkylerKing within capitalism there will always be a struggle between producer and consumer. Can't blame them for trying to make the most profit and you can't blame us for fighting to get the most for our money. We'll have to see how these subscriptions are rolled out before we can make a real determination, there's a film called Charlie Wilson's war where one of the characters tells a story about the zen master and as the story progresses, the zen master repeats the phrase. That's true. Everyone complained about Adobe switching to subscriptions, but I personally didn't mind. There are a lot of factors between the product, the service, the price, how things are implemented, etc. Even then, it comes down to the individual. Some will love it, some will hate it.

    I have the sony zv1 for 2 years i love it but the photos are so dark
    I travel alot and I'm starting to travel again next month

      If you are planning on using it professionally, and you can afford the A7Rv without breaking the bank, then the higher price shouldn't be a reason to avoid it. The A7iii is still a very good camera, though. While the A7Rv is technically "better", you won't benefit from or notice the improved specs or performance if you aren't doing some incredibly demanding things... So why spend the extra money?
      If I planned on using the camera professionally for years to come, like 4 or 5 years or more, I'd probably go with the A7Rv.
      If I only thought I'd only have it for a couple of years or I wasn't using it as a full time professional, though, I'd save the money and go with the A7iii..

    Always used to buy the cheapest film I could find - mostly Kodak gold or various knock offs of. Used to, up until about five years ago be able to find gold or color plus for £1 per roll in poundland here in the uk. I bought cases of it. Now it’s 8-12 per roll. Ridiculous. I think any hobby that requires ’stuff’ will always have the gear whores associated with it. I do think, however, that the photography community is one of the most toxic. And I mean toxic. Some people can be utterly vile. -Dee Rosa is one.
    I’ve said to you before you’re one of the few channels I watch because you don’t really care about gear - Martin castien is another, it’s really refreshing. I actually quit photography fit a few years because I was burnt out/overwhelmed by all the constant push to upgrade to the latest and greatest, and talk of soft corners or purple fringing etc. I just didn’t give a shit.
    I’ve never understood this mentality of - an old basic film camera and lenses are great, (or even old ccd digicams!) but a slightly older model dslr is antiquated and basically crap and unusable. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
    I’ve used everything from a phase one to a home made pinhole camera (from a monster energy can) and had great pictures from all of them, and had crap pictures from them too.
    My preference is the early-mid 2000’s fuji xpro 1 and im just about to go back to a 5d2. I spent a whole 12 hour shift at work a couple of days ago looking through Flickr and the internet. All the pictures that I liked or that spoke to me were shot with either black and white film (tri X mostly) or the 5d/5d2. Don’t know why. The newer cameras just don’t do anything for me. Are they cool? Absolutely. But from an ‘art’ perspective they just don’t really have that ‘thing’ for me.

    • @SkylerKing
      @SkylerKing  2 месяца назад +2

      I haven't heard of Dee Rosa, but I'm tempted to take a peek and see what that's about. Also, the rising price of film is one of the reasons why I so rarely shoot it anymore. I love film. But as you pointed out, paying up to $15 for a roll of Kodak Gold while so many other film stocks are either no longer made or are seemingly unattainable is just insanity. Like you, i have used a lot of cameras and can likely use anything and get good results. Usually, what I find pulling me in the direction of one camera or another is its story. Be it a personal story of how it came into my life, or it's a more broad reaching story about that particular model's history or something like that.
