It is very good, although I don't think the Royal Marines who took part in the real thing liked it at all.

@THE Don Spaghetti & Ravioli They did a fair amount of damage while they fought (including sinking a landing craft, according to Ricky Philips's book about the war). But they were ordered to surrender by the Falkland Island governor - probably in the hopes that the Argentine forces would be more lenient to the civilians.

Thinking back....I think that this might be the first time that 'Tracer' automatic fire was edited into a film. It starts off slow.....then gets much quicker before it hits you.
A brilliant production, the most surreal battle I've ever seen.
Fantastic scene, and a great performance by Bob Peck and the rest of the cast. It’s not often you see a film made about The Falklands War. This scene especially was a massive inspiration for my own film about the war which can be found on my channel.

Oh guys, I'm Argentinian, I hope I don't receive insults, but it's a great movie that shows the "Rosario Operation"
Never fear, The Argentinian forces had the respect of the British armed forces.
When the General Belgrano was torpedoed by a British sub, our cheap newspapers made a Headline 'Gotcha ' there was an outcry over this as our sailors do not triumph over enemy sailors drowning in freezing water.
To this day I have never heard a bad word about Argentinian forces. After their surrender they were treated well and returned home as soon as could be. This is a fact.

It`s film montage overlay technique I believe. Footage of real tracer is superimposed on to the film stock. Very difficult and technical to do, but the film SFX and film editor pulled it off beautifully.

@@joeturner1597 The First Casualty has incredible amounts of misconceptions, uncorroborated rumours and even some falsified evidence like "LVTP-7 rear light cluster" supposedly found in Stanley. I was able to obtain detailed pictures and videos of both vehicles, the LVTP-7 and the LCVP boat, and they were not damaged in battle. taped it off TV when it was shown for the first time early in the 1990s. I still have the VHS tape. great forgotten war film. And pretty accurate attention to detail and the events of 1982.

@@1220b I had several years worth of music programming and interviews I'd collected on VHS, went bak to review it some twenty odd years afterwards and the whole lot had bled out. VHS is a terrible long term storage media I learnt that the hard way, mind you it was all recorded on long play so stuff recorded in short play may fair better over time I'm not sure.
Still got this on a VHS tape. First shown in 1992, on the 10th anniversary of the invasion and only once since. Funny that, isn't it?

@@martindione386 One LVTP was hit with LAW and Carl G fire and was burned out, RMs taken prisoner were marched past it and had the chance to see their handiwork
@@stikfigz only Fairfield and Patterson declared to have seen it, the drawing Patterson did is laughable, depicting two rear doors instead of a single ramp. The RMs were taken in two open top LARC amphibian trucks, and one truck with a big opening in the rear, NONE of those Marines declared to have seen it.

'The First Casualty' book gives a good account of the defence of Stanley, though the quality of the writing is not good in places.
The battle lasted three hours, ending as the amphibious vehicles arrived at Government House at 9:25am. Quite remarkably no Royal Marine was hit, though several very nearly were, and the 'no casualties' order was part of the reason for this. Though Argentine forces were numerous, most landed by the airport. Small groups arrived at Government House throughout the battle and sadly very many of these were killed and wounded. The two major losses of life were in the landing craft that sank with 40 men, none of whom survived [the craft was salvaged, and can be seen today on land], and in one of the amphibious tracked vehicles, which was eventually burned by a Carl Gustav round, after being hit by LAWs, following numerous misses. The Argentine Amtrack commander still claims no vehicle was destroyed, though most the the RMs saw it [and inside it] as they were escorted to the airport as PoWs. Of the 28 men on board, very few, if any, survived. The RM section that fired the Carl Gustav rounds fell back through the town, and killed & wounded a number of Argentines on the way, possibly damaging a second Amtrack with a LAW. Neither side wished to fight intensively around the town's wooden buildings for fear of civilian casualties. This section ended its battle by hiding below deck on the yacht Forrest, moored on a jetty in Stanley harbour, very fearful of being found and shot. Most of them were 21 years old.
There should have been 82 Royal Marines, from the naval parties of 81/82, and the newly-arrived 82/83. One was in Argentina, and 12 had gone to South Georgia. About half of the remainder defended Government House, with a few others arriving there during the battle. They believed most of their Argentine foes had no experience of battle, as they tended to expose themselves to fire, and demonstrated inexperience in other ways. The older marines had seen combat in a number of countries over the previous 20 years, including Aden, Oman and Northern Ireland. These men claimed many targets hit throughout the battle, as did a highly-experienced sniper. The local Falkland Island Defence Force militia did not take part in the fighting [with one exception, a retired Marine who had settled in Stanley], though they gave their modern weapons to the second 'Naval Party 9801', who had none of their own.
Clearly the RMs enjoyed 'interior lines', as well as defending behind cover: they could engage whichever group of Argentines was currently threatening them, whereas the Argentines surrounding the Government House area could not co-ordinate an attack. Both sides lacked heavy weapons.
After the battle, a large number of blood-stained stretchers [70?] were seen at the airport. There appear to have been no Argentine surgical teams on land, and some of the seriously wounded were given poor and even dangerous treatment by naval or army medics prior to evacuation. Both the British and Argentine governments played down the nature of the battle. The British, for example, decided not to award any medals to any who took part, though the marine commander, Major Mike Norman RM, recommended seven men.

We are talking airpower, which was all that mattered, so sending a submariner admiral to be CinC was a bit dumb but typically British.
'Why Air Forces Fail' has a chapter on the reason why the Argentine one failed in combat, which is largely due to a lack of mutual support between all three services. Also I'd recommend 'Scimitar into Stanley', recently written by a colleague of a business contact, who held the rank of captain in the Guards, thus the senior officer of the senior regiment. 'Penal Company' is Philip Neame's account of D company 2 Para, which saw more combat than any other similar unit. Major Neame was not decorated for his service.

I can kinda see why the UK gave up the L1A1 for a shorter rifle. Damn things look like a long pain in the ass.
The SLR was a fine fine weapon and proved its capability over the years it was in Service. If you got hit by 7.62 SLR Round then you weren’t getting back up.
Ask any Vet who trained on both SLR & SA80 ( 5.56 ) they will tell you the SLR wins every time.
You could get shorter Models of the SLR too, for Jungle etc.
What a great weapon it was, absolutely fantastic.
My Passing Out Parade in 1988 ( Infantry ), we were the last in the whole of the Army to Pass Out with the SLR.
The Argies used full auto FAL, Brits picked up one instead of L1A1.

Funnil, enough, the Falklands War is the reason why they dropped it for the SA80
There were incidents where British soldiers were forced to pick up captured Argentinian FALs and/or munitions because at the time, the individual soldier can only get 3 or so L1A1 mags into their rigs.
The L1A1 SLR was and is far superior to the SA80 5.56 'peashooter' that replaced it. I know, I used both extensively. The length of the SLR was rarely an issue, it was easier to patrol with than the SA80 and could be ported in either shoulder. Far better build quality, and easier to strip and maintain. Far better bayonet wpn and ideal for close quarter fighting. IE a butt stroke to the face from an L1A1 with knock out teeth and break the nose. You might as well throw the SA80 away and pick up a shovel in close combat.

Does anybody know how many were the Argentinian casualties (dead) during the Gov House Battle. In some cases I have read for one (1) casualty but I have also read for 32 casualties. Which is the truth?
There is considerable evidence of a cover-up of casualties in the initial invasion - read 'The First Casualty' - estimates are 40 to 60

Absolutely brilliant portrayal of the defence of Government House , Port Stanley by the Royal Marines. This was played down by the UK press and they were branded cowards as it was perceived the Marines had thrown in the towel too soon when in fact they created alot of Argentinan casualties. When the rest of Argentinan troops came ahore with armoured support it was decided the game was up .Tumbledown is also an extremely good drama about the Scots guards and their assault on Mount Tumbledown.

In case anyone is wondering the Argie officer laying shot in the yard (with the hand grenade) was the only death the Argentinians officially admitted to in regards to the invasion.

@Matt Finkel that casualty was confirmed by the island governor himself. He decided to surrender when he saw the argentinians commitment to not kill any british soldier/civilian. Argentinians fired almost no shots. (this "battle" scene is not very accurate)
The name of that offcer is Captain Pedro D. Giacchino of Buzo Tactico force, Argentine navy. The reason he was shot is that in those units bosses are in charge of leading the platoon.
And the other two men were Corporal Urbina (medic) and Lt. Diego Garcia Quiroga. The numbers of the argentine casualties in Op. Rosairio (2 April) are those, and by the way after the british surrender all (both sides) could see if it was the opposite. The names are known for the argentine side at least.
The message recoded in the amtrack transport ship ARA Cabo San Antonio (Q-42) ordered the argentine not to cause casualties among the british, this due to the belief that it would prevent a further conflict. Although it may sound absurd to pretend capture an objetive without causing losses, it was the order given. Probably the unique operation of the kind in modern warfare, if not ever. And it was accomplished, by forcing the 40 men of Naval party 8901 to surrender without hurting them. In fact one of them, Lou Armour is famous nowadays.
And do not say Argie, pay respect to the argentine veterans just like you would like the people respect yours., they are sent to fight independently if they support the governments or not.

How ironic both sides used the same weapon, *L1A1 SLR* and the _FN FAL_ 🤔
The Royal Marines view was that the rifle had poor long-range accuracy, and its interesting to note that mines and snipers were the two problems that concerned the British. The SLR was a FAL vandalised by the Army Council, and the various RUclips videos on the rifle are illuminating. Being able to use captured ammunition was very useful, and Argentine forces tended to be lavishly supplied. They had a lot of night-vision image-intensifiers, whereas the poverty-stricken British did not.

@@aforandi well it's the opposite about the NVGs, it's still the argentine army against a power... there was not enough supplies and ammonitions for Argentina, plus the clothes were not prepared well to the climatic conditions of South Atlatic... the british had satellital image, nuclear submarines (Argentina does not have that until today)... it's quite obvious that is a fake information... there's not NVG's int he argentine army in 1982, and if that existed in Argnetina only Commandos had it or a few men had it, not regular soldiers. There's the story of Roberto Baruzzo who states to have taken a british rifle (not the SLR) who had night sights and he also states that he used that to direct the MG's fire made by another soldier. Also the story of Private Daniel Gionco who says that while in night patrol folowing the line of the beach in the Fresinet peninsule, there was a leading soldier that had been provided with NVG and that all of them were to try pay attention at him at allo times, for he was the only who could see in the night.
The SLR or FAL (it's the same model with different name, depending if speaking about Argentine or Britain) is a weapon still in service in the argentine army, and navy (although the last one has bought 5.000 second-hand M-16 from US, in 2011). The natural sights for the FAL, that is, the effective range of fire are 150 and 250 meters respectively. 25O meters is almost 3 blocks of distance. After the surrender at government house and the ceasefire the marines were repatriated to the UK. That was probably a mistake on the part of the Argentinean forces because those marines were probably able to give an awful lot of good Intel on the disposition of enemy forces on the island.
@@chrisholland7367 Not only that, but most of the marines joined the Task Force. In fact they raised the flag at Government House when Stanley was liberated.
@@chrisholland7367 the Marines were sent to Uruguay that same afternoon, whatever they saw, was only the initial day of the conflict, not very useful. Even the Argentine troops used for the landing were replaced in the following days by regular units.

Diego Angeloni well Argentinans are unlikely to act as themselves in a British made film (even though they're portrayed here quite fairly without stereotype). And to all gringos, Spanish all sounds alike so the distinctive Argie 'che' accent is unlikely to be picked up by audiences. Not meant as as insult to Argentinans, just film making pragmatism

Brilliantly filmed drama, some superb squaddie humour- "Permission to strangle a darkie please Cpl?!" LOL Then there was, "Would boys like a cup of tea?" as the Argie light armour and dismounted inf are approaching. The question was met by one of the Royals with, "Get doon ya silly bitch! Can't ya see there's a war on?!"
