This is my favorite song by Cake!!! Then its The Distance, Stick Shifts and Safety Belts and Short Skirt, Long Jacket. I love Cake!!
Stick Shifts and Safety Belts wasnt underrated early in Cake's career, but doesnt get the shine that it deserves. That said, I drove a Malibu from 1996 to 2007, so maybe I just remember it more fondly than others for that reason. Italian Leather Sofa is another song like that though....deservedly popular at the time, but seemingly underrated in 2022.
Stick shifts and safety belts is an amazing song

Friend Is A Four Letter Word and You Turn The Screws are as low key as pure fire can be. You dont know your face has been burned off until you go to shave the next morning.
These guys are poets. I love "Alpha Beta Parking Lot," "Walk on By," and "Sheep Go to Heaven" (and lots of others).

Super underrated band.
Cake is seriously one of my favorite bands. To get the reaction of two people that I adore is a nice treat.
I've never met anyone who can't vibe to Cake. So bass lines are always so infectious. I'd recommend a song, but honestly anyone you listen to next will be solid and I'll give my thumbs up.

Cake are such fun! Despite their lyrical content usually being the standard relationship problems, theyre just so damn catchy! Its just about impossible to dislike their music, and very hard to find a bad track.

Most definitely. They played wheels at a show that I saw, didn't have strong feelings about the song before, but after seeing them do it live it's one of my favorites.
A lot of Cake's hits have the talking verses in them, but they do several songs where they sing the whole way through. Check out "Sad Songs and Waltzes", "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts", "Frank Sinatra", "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" - they're really good musicians with a great sense of comic timing and they have a diverse repertoire!
"Commissioning a Symphony in C" is another great one to check out.
Definitely my favorite Cake song.

I was living in Sacramento, California when this band came out. They are from there so their music was played a lot on the local radio stations.
I love Cake!! Sheep go to heaven has got to be the next one I love the intro to that song and it is so strangely cake
I think their approach to song writing is that each song is written as a sing along. The live shows are incredible and Cake holds a spot in my top 5 live shows of all time.

Cake is so unique. Odd catchy. Rap, talking, half singing in his songs and very cool instruments. Acquired taste, but rubs on you after awhile. Like Beck, Incubus, Butthole Surfers, some of Beastie Boys stuff. Talented.
What a great song! Next one of theirs you guys check out could be Mustache Man (Wasted), it's also got a good groove. So glad you guys are loving Cake, they are such an underrated band.

Oh shit, similar message but way sillier: check out The Bogmen - Suddenly. It was on the radio soon after this came out in maybe 95/6 - far as I know they never hit with anything else but that one song was truly fun, it's a sung/spoken story as well.
