@@gr1f1th okay, do you think the Elite strap only cost a few dollars to make? Rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries that are attached to your head needs to be the safest lithium ion batteries on the planet. That research is not cheap. That subsidizes the price of the actual item that will be for sale. All of that research has to be paid back or why design the product and release it? It has to be profitable for the company.

Pricing out all of the accessories I will most likely want on X-mas, including the Kiwi Elite Headstrap for $30, JSAUX power link cable for $25, and some prescription lens inserts for $50, which is about the same I paid for extra accessories for my Reverb G2 and Index. You nailed it, Meta don’t understand that they need a good user experience to generate word of mouth recommendations to generate more sales. Other than the improved lens my experience with the Quest 3 has been really bad and I’m still using my Quest 2 until the 3rd party head straps and facial interfaces are available. I can’t wear the Quest 3 with stock strap for an hour without having to take it off. The setup was frustrating, I selected QR code for wifi setup and it didn’t work, it still made me enter the wifi password manually. When I enabled the Airlink it made me confirm a code on the PC and by the time I ran up/down 2 flights of stairs it timed out and I had to do it again. I’ve been doing more swearing than game play. The light leak through the bottom of the headset is more than annoying. I threw away money buying the over priced accessories for the Quest 2, that later broke and died, so I’m not going to do it again. There’s no Quest 3 exclusive content yet so there’s no way I’d recommend to family or friends to buy this thing right now and if I do in the future I’ll have to explain to them the real price for a usable configuration. I fear this will be a market failure.

I agree. They advertise the £479 price point for the Quest but 128GB storage is going to be inadequate for most people so really it's £619, The supplied cloth strap is HORRIBLE, worse than the Quest 2's so that's £69.99 for the elite strap. Plus I am short sighted so it's either £39.99 for the spacer or £50+ for prescription lens adaptors. That's circa £750 before buying a single game.

The elite strap is also essential because the base head strap is terrible. But $100 is crazy, and $180 for the battery version. I’m talking CAD. You get the 512mb model, hand straps, elite head battery strap and charging dock, you have now spent $1400 for all.

Never having owned a quest, I struggle to understand how people defend this type of hardware. Sure quality is better for the optics, but they can't even make it comfortable? I get accessories are the norm now, like a better or bigger battery. Hell, I'd buy another set of psvr 2 controllers if they sold them separately even though I get roughly 8 hours on them; which most times is plenty. But that is a convenience option I want vs a comfort option. Many folks know of the quest since it's so mainstream but when friends and family ask if they should get it, I say sure. BUT.... you'll need many accessories to make it tolerable, which of course scares them away from getting it. Hey I didn't lose them a sale, they lost themselves a sale. But VR is the best it's ever been currently. I'm most excited for RE4 in VR

I always figured it was one of those "we'll sell you the razor handle cheap, so we can sell you the blades for a lot" type of scenario. I can excuse the crappy head strap on the Q2: it was a $300 wireless miracle do it all headset that they were already selling at a loss. They had to save money somewhere. So they wanted to make money back on the accessories. Not only was the original elite strap expensive, it was also built wrong. The first couple of production runs were made using the wrong polymer and just about all of them broke during normal use, so they can't argue that OEM accessories are better quality. If they are going to charge movie theater food prices for their accessories then I'm going to just keep buying third party accessories that are priced fairly and are just as good in terms of quality.

What no "meta paid" content creator will do is:
Find the settings in terms of resolution at a fixed refresh rate where Grid Legends runs without framedrops on the same track on both Q2 and Q3.
Basically use this as a benchmark to compare performance.
This is what a Quest2/3 owner said to me.
After this comment he obviously felt I was attacking Meta and changed his numbers and refused to talk to me.
      >> 125% res scale and 72hz, better than Quest 2 at 110% res and 60hz
Do the math, that suggests in REAL games Quest 3 is only 36% faster than Quest 2. Meta has some explaining to do !!!
183% res scale @ 72hz would be possible if Quest 3 was really twice the performance of Quest 2.

However while I belive the majority of people will find it fine like the switch's confort which means if the headset is sold at cost or a loss leader it was a good choice for a load of reason like self space at retail and shipped and stuff like that... But they could has had the stock strap as the confort strap and raise the price $10-$20 of the heasdset to add a battery strap like the Bobo m3 which I got for $40 it would have been better and they should have thrown in the aticve grip straps to for $10 more and a less rough interface in a color of your choosing of $5 more... Which would make the headset $560 starting which would make it the most expensive console on sell but still a good value I think maybe even better... RThough the $500 starting price point is really good and I spent $700 on my quest 3 set up but then again I just bought the Meta active straps and 3rd partied the rest because the active straps are really nice though expinstive but tehrest Meta could not beat on price or funtion..

Yet these insane prices aren't deterring many buyers. Almost everything was out of stock a day in at my local retailers. In general they took the fair value mutiplied it by 2 and called that the price. Unfortunately I am sucker, and won't be deterred by costs when I want a thing. So I have the active straps for the controllers, the elite strap without battery, and the carry case. [I have a monstrous external battery bank that can chill in a pocket if I need more than 2 hours of battery.
But this is all nothing new, Quest 2 had the same priced accessories. It's all a bit much, but it's a luxury purchase, so I get it, I don't like it being so much, but it's pure luxury.

The IPhone is still useable for everyone without a case, its seems that for some, including me, the Q3 is almost unusable and not fit for purpose with that strap. So for me its a con especially the £150 for 380gb of extra HD memory.

Thank you! I used to love and support Quest, and didn’t mind over-paying for accessories (& buying games I never played). But my elite battery strap broke quickly, it sounded like they were willing to refund it, but then rescinded the offer & would only send another defective elite strap (with no additional warranty). So now I don’t buy anything from them except the new model of the Quest, and exclusive games I really want. They don’t stand by their products and they don’t care about their customers. I wish I didn’t have to support them at all but the tech is still impressive. The user experience is also worse since they went to Meta. I spent about an hour just trying to get the quest 3 connected to my account. There was no option to connect the new model in the phone app, even though itvwas up-to-date. Just Q2 and Pro. I’m guessing they mostly want people to login through Facebook, probably forgot they had a Phone app to support 🤦🏻‍♂️

I got a halo type strap on Amazon day 1 for $20. Just checked and it's $35 now, but it is better than my Quest 2 Elite strap was. Got a set of silicon controller covers with straps for $16. I don't buy anything "official" because you are right, they are horribly overpriced.

They do it because it makes sense from a business standpoint they know 3rd parties will flood the market with cheap prices soon and there is always people who are willing to pay extra just for the official brand name. But business standpoint and consumer standpoint usually don't align from our perspective elite strap should be what quest 3 already comes in the box with considering its 200 more than quest 2.

If you dont know, i can tell you exactly why it is. So i have been a shop manager for years. Things, have changed. So basically you dont earn anything on the main product. Due the pricing of competition. So this is the only way they will earn anything. Both Microsoft and Apple, sell a product to break even, or a total loss now days. So the stores, who has the products, needs to sell accessories to earn money. So accessories, can cost 3 dollars to make, but sells for 35 dollar in the shop. I was sitting on the "cost" price for most of the products up in time. Why you think they want you to buy all the stuff when you buy a tablet, phone or computer? Or else its a loss on the sale. We where selling Ipads that was 100 dollar loss to the shop for each Ipad sold. So it was important for the shop to earn back money on accessories. The Meta quest, has stuff in there that costs more then the current price tag. Just look at phones with same specs. Then it might spark light bulb for you. Then all the sensors, cameras, lenses etc. I belive the cost of the Quest 3 is closer to a 800-1000 dollar to make. They have cut down of a few things, to make it more affordable. Like the straps. Why you think we have elite straps with battery etc? If they did go out to make the best product they can.. They would never sell with those shitty straps that came with the headset. Also they know that its a need for it. Some games that i played, was only playable for a bit over 1 hour. That is an issue. They made an issue to sell a product to earn back the money they lost. Also its more easy to buy cheaper headset. Then notice something you need, like battery and comfort. Its easy to just add a 170 dollar later on. Then you forget what the total price is in the end of the total experience of the product. Then you spent 170 dollar more there.. then you need games... 3-4 games 20 dollar each.. it adds up in the end. Then they have earned money on the Quest 3 in the end. maby 5-10% more then the cost of producing. The bigger problem is when it get to Europe. We need to pay much more for everything. Headset was over 300 dollar more, the games are 4 dollar more. The overpriced accessories 180 dollar for elite strap with battery, 170dollar for the docking.. 100 dollar for the case, so you can carry it around. So we pay 500-600 dollar more then in the states in total of that package Europe starts to react negative to the prices and the total cost. If I want to buy a GTX 4090. I pay 500 dollar more, then the people in the USA. Then it starts to get really expensive and an issue

I agree with your thoughts and would even price most things a bit cheaper to be honest. While it is likely they lose money for every headset sold (like the Quest 2) and they have to make some of it back, the price for 1st party accessories is just abusive for what they offer and it's interesting they don't even provide a discount for getting the headset with an accesory.

    • @vitalv2824
      @vitalv2824 11 месяцев назад

No, they are not losing money on this one at all. After doing a teardown the full value of the headset in parts is about $270.86. I reviewed their costs with labor and shipping. They are gaining about $200 with each headset, more with the 500GB model.
Now if everyone starts returning them, then yes, they will lose a ton of money!
The accessories are low quality, uncomfortable, and overpriced.

I have the 512 gb quest 3 and I bought the elite battery strap as I had the one for quest 2 and love them both never had any issues with breaking. I also picked up the hard shell case as I do go places with mine frequently. There is a known issue in the community I am experiencing with the elite battery strap for quest 3 that we are speculating is a software/firmware issue that can be patched with an update hopefully but what is happening is the headset does not recognize the battery strap is plugged in and will not take a charge as a result, at least you cant tell it is. I was able to unplug mine from the headset and charge the headset and battery strap separately and then plugged it back in, still wasnt recognized after powering off several times, however doing an actual restart of the headset was a success and everything is charging as normal and it is recognized by the headset again. Hopefully its fixed soon.

I agree, Meta accessories are wildly inaccurate with price>worth. I know that all official accessories be it Meta, Sony or Apple are this way because the margin is high on them and they in turn will say we do this to make the money we lost on the hardware and at times this could be true, Meta's Quest 2 price at launch is evidence of this.
I have purchased lenses from Widmo and grips from AMVR. I am still waiting for the M3 Pro to be available as I have 2 batteries and the dock for the M2 and I am guessing the M3 will come with a battery, their site says October, is coming soon, and Amazon does not have any listings for it.

You nailed it. As a Quest Pro user who bought a Quest 3 it took me 3 days to return the 3. Te default strap is an absolute joke. There are ski goggles INFINITELY more comfortable than these things. That and the battery life is laughable. 2 hours? I don't own a single piece of tech that doesn't get at least 3 1/2 to 4 hours of battery (including Quest Pro)
So $580 for the headset, $130 for the strap with battery... You're getting up to Quest Pro prices and still only have essentially better passthrough (not THAT much better) and better GPU. You can still play and will be able to play allllll the same games, with better tracking, audio comfort etc on the Pro vs the 3. For the Q3, Elite battery strap, Docking station you're spending $820 ish bucks.... Quest Pro gives you so much more, better battery life better audio better comfort dock included better tracking for what? $150 ish more? Don't get me wrong Quest 3 looks great the graphics upgrade is nice. But guess what, I can boost the Quest Pro's visuals using 3rd party APK's like Quest Games Optimizer. I may get slightly lower FPS but I can get similar results.
