You have a lot of technical skill. It always bothers me when I watch some devlog channels and they skip explaining the code and all that because they think it is boring to watch. Which it probably is for most people, but I personally really enjoy it. Even though I have no experience with procedural generation, I still feel like you explained it pretty well in this as well as in one of the previous videos. I still gotta learn it at some point though.
Honestly such a huge fan of all your game dev work so far. Your style is what I would aim for myself. Barely have touched game dev honestly. Love all the content man, cant wait to see more. Def looking forward to playing this one!
i know it's oversaid, but it is true. you've got to start and keep trying. (and i can confirm.) as long as you're not as lazy as me, you should be fine
I've been following the progress on Twitter and really enjoy all of your previews, but nothing beats a good old-fashioned Devlog that shows how you stuck it all together. Game is looking really good, TJ. I'm wishlisting now!
Your videos are consistently some of the best Unity content out there - I really enjoy them. You approach these new challenges in a way that makes it feel accessible
Love seeing this much work condensed into a short video. I think your emphasis on having a realistic outlook is the right approach. Good luck, and great work so far.
man i havent even started on the game i wanna make, ii honestly have no idea how to start, but because of this and your progress ive found hope, thanks man
I can completely relate. It happened I wanted to practice web back-end development. I wanted to create a simple front-end UI just to call the APIs then I realized I spent hours on adding CSS back and forth instead of focusing on the main task, which was the main scope and the reason I even started to work on this. Then scope overshooting also a common mistake. But I would say not completly drop your ideas but do some side projects to even grow to that level to be able to make this goal then return and achive it.
Keep it up teej, i've been watching you since the beginning and you've made a lot of progress, i hope that this game is going to go really good, honestly i would pay for if any price you always make really good games. I tried it myself, and really liked it. This video helped me a lot and i wish you the bests 🙂
Looks like a great base to bulid something special off of! I'm sending this off to our team working on a very similar concept for the PirateSoftware GameJam. Thank you so much for sharing your progress!
Would love to see some more small projects and then a return to one of your older projects (unless you just need to leave them all in the past, which I would understand). Would be pretty epic to see you return to one though!
I was afraid of that. In understand that though. Generally you just need to move on. That’s said I still would think returning to a concept after getting more experience could make for a good story to tell on RUclips. Like a triumphant return. To clarify I’m thinking this would be MUCH in the future. Like, after a LOT of projects
OOOOOH. I was trying to figure out where the song came from. It was so familiar to me, but it wasn't quite Kingdom Rush, or Stick Wars, or Age of War, or any other game I could figure out. Its the same song I used for my own game lol. Really cool project, looking forward to seeing it when it comes out, I loved Kingdom rush
You should make certain types of troops run on the roads and some just run anywhere then some ships that can move only on the rivers that can bomb your towers/king tower.
One thing that might add a bit more visual interest (and would be fairly easy to implement) would be adding pregenerated islands in the background. Just give a bit more to look at instead of the blue sky. Also, this may just be me, but only ever looking at one game screen kind of makes my eyes weary after a bit. I did notice a shop screen in there though 🤷
I was wondering if the thumbnail was a mockup or not, and now I see why it's not. You've got a lot of experience, you made it your full-time job and you bought some assets to make up the rest of the time. You should probably put a disclaimer in the thumbnail itself for those that have never made a game before or have a day job that your technique won't be realistic for them. That said, it looks like a pretty cool game.
Crazy work TJ! As a developer myself I could see this taking me a lot longer than 3 months or so, how many hours do you put in per week for something like this?
Really great video! Could you point me toward a tutorial or guide that could explain what you meant by using meshes instead of prefabs for the grid outline?
it's a small and simple game. but it will sell well enough. afterall, it's a game you looked the market for. a market that may be saturated though, but if the price isn't too high, will generate a correct amount of profit. afterall, there's still some new ones that works. and your game needs to distinguish a bit from the competition too, as for now, nothing is outstanding. but you may have something in mind ahah. i hope your game goes well.
The real issue with using assets is not the time investment. The issue is those assets showing up in other games. And it might not mix well with other art in the game. Anyone who is working on games solo will probably have to develop some modelling skills.
Ive been an solo dev for 7 years now, Ive never ever made a single dev vlog or youtube video at all because Ive always seen how developers who do end up opening an income door for themselves that while on paper seems like a good idea because it provides a gauranteed source of income and instant gratification and community feedback and all that jazz, in reality their focus will gradually become more and more about maintaining their subscriber base and less and less about actually making a successful game. Forever trapped in a cycle of just creating what are essentially tutorial boiler plate half games for the sake of educating other solo developers for the sake of getting views for the sake of paying their bills. Whereas for me, even though I too havent released a game yet, I dont have a shiny golden goose egg called a youtube channel that constantly requires me to split focus and consequently i retain maximum hunger as a starving artist. Time will tell if my approach of secclusion is a good one or not, but time has already told that doing dev vlogs is ironically counter productive for indie solo game developers.
Any idea how many hours you put in over those 100 days? Sounds like you have a full time job on top of your dev time as well? Really enjoyed the video, game is looking great!
AdVyvanced - I'm dying. LOL - I feel you. How much time did you have in game dev before starting this project? Trying to get a feel for your overall experience prior to this. Feels like you've accomplished SO MUCH in a short time for part time game dev. Edit - added question

Appreciate it, you are right it doesn’t get as many views if I explain it but idc too much anymore, RUclips is just marketing for my game

Yes, absolutely good idea
Yo sick video, how did you learn to make these scripts, they look very complicated, and how long have you been coding for? Very nice video
Been coding for 5ish years, learned a lot from Sebastian Graves Channel
Suggestion: A magic enemy that stops in front of one of your towers and freezes it
I like it!
@@TJGameDev but it's evil !

@@TJGameDev Wow fair enough, is that with your job as well!?
Thanks for making this video! As a fellow game developer that feels like a fraud for not making and releasing completed games, I appreciate the advice
Glad I could help!
Wonderful game, but I NEED to know what song is playing at 1:07 ish
jumpman 93!
Really great video! Could you point me toward a tutorial or guide that could explain what you meant by using meshes instead of prefabs for the grid outline?
No tutorial that I know of sorry, I just create a new meshrenderer and assign a mesh to its sharedmesh
I really hope you come back to the tavern game, it looks like a ton of fun. Ill definitely try this game too.
Thanks but I won’t sorry

Maybe, but I can’t think of any good games that people called asset flips, it’s usually just the bad ones
Alright I’m trying this later today
Thanks Weller! Hope you’ve been good sorry I’ve been a little busy haha

Thanks as always Nathan!
