    Absolute genius! This was the easiest upgrade ever. I have a mbp early 2011 running El Capitan and that stupid spinning was driving me nuts. I would open up my mbp in class and want to slam it on the ground because it would take forever to open up a PowerPoint. It's running faster and smoother now. 👍🏽

      Hey which MBP do you have? 15" or 13"? I'm considering in buying one but I've seen some videos of the early 2011 15" having gpu failures how's yours working out? Also it helps to download a cleaner program to free up some space in your ssd/hd(temp files, cache, etc.)

    • @alejandrochavez5461
      @alejandrochavez5461 8 лет назад +1

      I have the 13". Also, the ram upgrade only helped with the computers performance once it's booted completely. Start up is still about a minute. I haven't completed any other upgrades other than the RAM. Hope this helps.

    Thanks a lot for this video which was exactly what i needed.
    I have been struggling for the past 2 years with a slow performing 4GB RAM early 2011 MacBook Pro (15 inch). The space almost was up and I had to move my photo library to an external drive freeing up 300 GB of space on my 500 GB factory HDD. Things started to look a lot better in terms of performance for the usual browsing, watching movies etc. But when I started to use Adobe products like Lightroom CC etc., again my MacBook started to become slow and that's where i stumbled upon your video of upgrading the RAM.
    Boy wasn't that exactly i needed!! I immediately ordered the 16GB RAM and same day delivery (thanks to Amazon prime) and i followed your steps. Now my MacBook is not a slug anymore but a Racing Horse :D
    Next step - Have to see if i can upgrade my HDD to an SSD.... probably i can convert this Racing Horse to a Steam Engine :D
    Thanks again UnboxTherapy!!

    I just did this! It took about ten mins and now I have 16 gig of ram and several more years of life on my trusty 2011 MacBook Pro. The hardest part was correctly aligning all those tiny screws when putting the case back together. Thanks!

  • @Reneesfun
    @Reneesfun 8 лет назад +3

    I did it! Woot Woot! I just don't trust myself to do things like this but I ordered the Corsair RAM, watched your video about 5 times over and then did the installation. I have an early Macbook Pro 2011. I've never removed the back before but luckily had the right screwdrivers to do it (a small miracle really.) I don't know how my dog's hair made it to the inside of my Mac but I gently cleaned it out and installed the RAM. I record on Garageband (basic, I know) and it still stops for optimization but iPhoto is running much better. Could new SSD be in my future?!!! Thanks!

    For all you asking what is the difference between using 1600Mhz or a 1333Mhz is that the higher frequency is not exactly designed for these older models and it might cause some system issues, as some reported around forums. For some people they worked perfectly, but if you want a guaranteed system stability after the RAM upgrade stick to 1333MHz, which is the frequency suggested by Apple for MBP 15' 2011. In the end, the system will not noticeably benefit by the extra MHzs. They also said the maximum RAM support 8 Gb, but consider at the time 8 Gb single bars were not that popular and 8 Gb total was a huge amount of RAM, while today 16 Gb is becoming the average RAM amount.

  • @neilmackenzie9437
    @neilmackenzie9437 7 лет назад +10

    I am surprised you haven't taken any precaution to avoid the static charge. Guys, please do not touch the ram directly with your fingers, it might damage it...Take precautions for static charge.

    MY PURPOSE FOR 16GB is for running a music production program known as Ableton Live, although its a magnificent beast in the production world...it absolutely eats CPU so I'm kicking it up with 16GB and a Solid State Drive soon. Thanks again, great tutorial.

    I ordered the same 16gb MacMemory ones and I can't wait. I on a daily bases record commentaries (typically 10-20 min long) and I record the gameplay using Game Capture HD while I also run Garageband in the background to my Shure mic at the same time. It worked good for a little until the videos started adding up. Plus I also edit on iMovie because my computer is to slow for After Effects which is the main reason I'm upgrading so large so I never have to worry about my Ram.

    Any chance you could do a performance comparison before and after?
    I'd be interested in upgrading my mac, but I'd like to see how much it improved your system too. :)

    Battery life is essential for business, education and even commuting. Every manufacture is trying their best to boost battery life. Systems built for windows have issues with this due to hardware and software being build by many different companies. Where as apple has limited parts they use for their systems, some of which are made by themselves. They are there for able to optimise their systems to meet their requirements.

    The term "retina display" is just what Steve used to call it, it's just a high resolution screen which is actually available to everyone, just very expensive. This whole "HD" idea is also just a marketing term. "HD" was around well before the term "HD" was defined.

Thank for posting this vid bc i didnt think 16 gb or ram was possible for my mbp.

    Not sure why I'm seeing sixth grade chatter beneath this video, but just a note to say thanks. Good work; short, clear, concise with enough slack and humor to involve the viewer, but not too much, like sooooooooo many have. Thanks!

    very awesome. I have a late 2011 2.2 GHz and I just installed 16 GB 1600 MHz and it's awesome. Probably more memory then I need, but still very awesome.

    Rather, the simplest advice (if you don't do alot of computer building) is to discharge yourself on something metal before you start - preferably the computer case, or the frame inside. Hold onto it with one hand until you need the other hand, and any static electricity you may have built up should have absorbed into the metal case.

    RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It saves small amounts of data, way faster than your computer would do on a regular hard-drive. this could be used for gaming, servers and mostly small things that are controlled by your Operating System. (which usually wont need more than 0,5-1GB)

    1)Restart your computer.
    2)Press the key indicated during the startup messages (normally one of the "F" keys) to enter BIOS.
    3)Click on the "Chipset" or "Advanced Chipset" features.
    4)Highlight the "DRAM Configuration" option and press "Enter."
    5)Read the timing entries (CAS latency, RAS-to-CAS delay, Precharge and Cycle Time) to determine the current timing settings for your memory.
    Im not sure about Mac though...

    You could, but it's highly recommended that you have ram equally distributed. What I mean by that is it's best to have 2 and 2, 4 and 4, and 8 and 8.

    16 gig is very useful for research oriented work. In clinical research, some of my dataset ranges from 100 mb to 10~20 gb. Sometime I have to keep multiple of them live in the ram for comparison purposes. So in my case, sometimes 16 gb is still not enough.
    It's true that maybe this type of analysis should be done on a desktop or a workstation, but it's really hard to carry those around to conferences and between labs.

    Before even opening up your laptop and start taking out/installing RAM modules you must ground yourself! But other than that good instructional video!

    If you have an integrated graphics card like the intel HD 3000 or 4000 like most macs do upgrading the RAM will also add to the amount of memory it can use (348mb with 4GB will go up to around 1GB with 16GB RAM) in case you guys didn't know!
