Due to unforeseen circumstances, i.e. the Electoral College failing to work as intended, we got a losing candidate appointed as president. The worst president we have ever experienced in this Nation's history. Totally unfit in literally every aspect and nature of his existence. And a large minority want to return him to power. For me, it is no surprise that the party of utter lawlessness is eating this Democracy from within. tRump is just the worst example.

@@Slo-ryde the answer is that it’s constitutionally a bit problematic for the executive branch (of which DOJ is a part) to go after the judicial branch. So what the Senate Judiciary committee has done first is to file an ethics complaint with the Judicial Conference to investigate him. They’re hoping the judicial branch will police their own, to avoid constitutional issues.

Once upon a time. Republicans decided to embrace even the criminals among the guns&bibles crowd after they were so horribly -- rightfully -- embarrassed by and chastised by voters after Nixon. Reportedly, at least, Fox was created to spread alternatives to calls for justice when Republicans get caught. The Republican party owners prefer "alternative facts" rather than having voters face any reality that is unhelpful to their quest for power and money.
I sure wouldn't hold my breathe waiting on Thomas to do the right thing.

As for making an effort to discover the source of the leaks, i didn’t hold my breath. Had they WANTED TO, they could have discovered the source. Starting with engaging the services of an actual investigator like the FBI.
Alito leaked the Hobby Lobby decision to his far right buddies. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior… There’s no reason to believe Alito didn’t do it again.

Fortas was Chief Justice while Nixon was President. Nixon was fond of the idea of replacing him with a more conservative justice, and saw this as his opportunity. The house and senate were majority Democrats, so Nixon ordered a Justice Department investigation. There is no doubt Fortas was taking bribes from sketchy characters. With pressure from the Attorney General Fortas resigned. In the end the whole scheme worked out as Nixon wanted it to when conservative justice Harry Blackmun was sworn in. It's the same game today. Republicans don't want to be down a conservative justice while a democrat is president.
Not so much apples and oranges. They were both on the Supreme Court. The only difference is the time in history and the obvious difference between Fortas, who put the importance of the public’s faith in the Supreme Court above his own interest. Now that’s real integrity. In that regard Fortas and Thomas are oranges and rotten apples.
Abe Fortas argued one of the most important cases in history before the Supreme Court years before he became a SCOTUS justice. _Gideon v. Wainwright,_ in 1963. In that case, it was determined that the Sixth Amendment guaranteed the accused right to counsel whether or not the defendant could pay. Before 1963, if couldn't pay for a lawyer, you had to represent yourself.
Things we take for granted were fought for and paid for. And they can be taken away at any time if we are not vigilant. We learned last year with _Dobbs._ We must never forget it.
Someone needs to investigate the financial disclosures of all the Supreme Court Justices.
It's very sad that we lost Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a paragon of virtue, to gain Brett Kavanaugh, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, ALL of whom committed perjury at their confirmation hearings!!

Do you think Mitch McConnell has any sense of honor about this? He blocked Obama’s appointment and forced the Kavanaugh appointment through. Getting the modern incarnations of the parties to take ethics seriously, when it gets in the way of political expediency, is a big barrier.
The Ginni Thomas stuff has been known since 2014 and it didn’t make a difference then, and probably won’t change anyone’s mind now.

It makes me wonder if Thomas is the only judge on the Supreme Court that has been bought. Why else would the silence from Roberts be so deafening?! I am forced to wonder if an ethics committee should look at all of the justices. In all fairness that might be best considering Thomas said he consulted his colleagues and was told that he didn't have to report his gifts.
This is how long it takes to take the word of a well respected and educated woman. I have no illusions what my chances are at ever being taken seriously.

Also, since the Constitution designates the House of Representatives as the only chamber that can initiate an impeachment procedure and the Republicans have a slim majority in the House Thomas can rest, comfortably assured no action against him will be initiated. Abe Fortas was a close personal friend and advisor to LBJ. One could argue that LBJ had his own ethical limitations. But that didn't stop Fortas from doing the right thing. Was it Fortas and/or LBJ, or was it maybe the influence that [what would now be considered to be} the mainstream media has that was the driving force?
Can´t help but wonder if the 2010 ruling in the Citizens United case was in fact the result of connections like that of Thomas to Crow... We now know they were "freindly" then !
Very good point. With Thomas, corruption is rampant. Money talks. Of course he (and others) would favor decisions that favor big business, especially if he is offered special perks.
I wondered too at the time, but later in light of all Thomas' votes in USSC, I am convinced he has always been extremely conservative and voting against the majority of the Citizen's wishes
I thought of the Citizens United decision as well. I'm so glad you pointed it out as although I'm quite intuitive, it would take more critically analytical minds to prove it. It seems it was the beginning of our ongoing present day destruction.

Resigning would require a degree of humility and respect for the Court that Thomas clearly doesn't have. How soon before Cheap Justice Roberts does another, "You will respect my authoritah!" tour?
The issue is that Crow owns Thomas's mother's home...... and if Thomas resigned from the SCOTUS position he would be worthless to Crow and so his mother would be in peril!
She can go live in Thomas and Ginny's home. At his and her salary it must be large enough to house 3 persons.

I am so thoroughly disgusted and disappointed by Clarence Thomas’ unwillingness to even evaluate and judge his own behavior. We must find a way to develop and apply reasonable standards of ethics for SCOTUS, as we cannot expect all justices to be self-governing- as Clarence Thomas has show & continues to show.

His staying on the SCOTUS is an affront to Justice Ethics and betrays the American People.
It also shows the integrity of our Congress. In 1966 you could find a Congress with integrity to get rid of people who had questionable ethics. Today it seems as though that is qualifications for Republicans and corporate Democrats to become a member of Congress is to have little to no ethics. Same goes for Republican appointed judges and Supreme Court Justices. It is sad our country has fallen so far for power.
