Thomas should never have been confirmed in the first place because of Anita Hill and he has been a disgrace ever since.
As I recall, his confirmation was a slim partisan margin. A few votes.

You are so correct on this. Thomas has been an issue BEFORE he was confirmed. If anyone is justifying why we need both term limits and a definitive code of ethics for the Supreme Court, it’s him. He’s been an embarrassment. And the fact that he is so brazen about admitting what he did, shows that there HAS to be guardrails on the amount of power lawmakers and judges have in insulating themselves from PROPER accountability.
Exposing the misdeeds or crimes is NOT accountability, it’s a responsibility to the public to do so by news organizations. It is the responsibility of government to serve as a check and balance. But when not enough of government wants to do this because they see it as their mission to instead protect, coverup and make excuses for one of their own, it means government is fundamentally broken.
This nation owes Anita Hill an apology. A big one. Now.

Been following Mehdi since he was at Al Jazeera, not surprised he's starting to get the attention he deserves on this network and more widely, he's a brilliant and incisive journalist, commentator, and interviewer, I always feel better informed for watching his show. Clarence Thomas have no shame he will not step down because he has no integrity just like the crooked Republican party.
Thomas actually did claim on his disclosure forms in the late 90s that he had used Harlan's private jet for a couple of trips (to California, I believe),. The NY Times did a small story on Thomas's relationship with Crow, and Thomas never included another trip on his annual disclosure forms.
ProPublica has a YT channel and recently posted a video about all of this. It's quite interesting.

His defense is that he just happens to be "close personal friends" with Crow and that this is just routine social life. But if that's the case, where's the reciprocity? When all of the gifts flow in one direction, the obvious question is, what is Crow getting for his money? I think we all have a pretty good idea.

The idea that "justices should make decisions independent of popular opinion" is the stated reason the founding fathers instituted lifetime service on the Supreme Court. I've definitely changed my opinion about many things since I was younger. I'm glad I wasn't allowed to make legal rulings on the things I used to believe way back when. And if someone doesn't believe in science or try to grow in character with knowledge and experience (progress), I sure don't want them deciding things for me today. I feel Supreme Court justices should have term limits.

The most glaring difference between the Fortas case and the Thomas case would appear to be the most glaring difference between John Roberts and Earl Warren: one had the title of Chief Justice while the other did the job.
The scandal is still recent. I think we're going to learn that Harlan Crow was Thomas's own sugar daddy. When you get a taste of luxury, you always want more.
