See, this makes sense. Other vocal coaches or teachers on the internet say "The less breath, the better" while others say "you need lots of breath" which makes me confused on what to do. This is the only video where the coach actually explains HOW proper vocal cord closure should feel and sound. Singing Success, EricArcenaux, and Felicia Ricci are the ONLY channels on RUclips who've actually helped me understand how the voice should work, sound, and feel. They go all out on explanation and make it so simple.
+Hector Rodriguez Those are some of my faves too. I know this is months late, but if you haven't found him already I think Justin Stoney with New York Vocal Coaching is a good one too.
Mr Manning i would like to thank you way out here in South Africa, I have been doing the Singing Success program for about 5 years and have been all over Europe singing Motown classic songs... Thank you.
I'm a baritone. Before SS I Could only reach F#4, damaging my vocal cords, like screaming, without enough sustain. After only 3 months (with SS), I can now reach A4 easily, and even C5 with (with some effort), with a better tone and sustain. Thank you, Brett!
He currently trains Hayley Williams from paramore and Keith Urban. I looked him up on wiki and apparently he also trained Taylor Swift and Wes Hampton. And these people obviously have money, so the fact that they choose him over any other trainer says something. Also, you can tell how well-versed he is considering he trains a gospel, a pop-punk, and some country singers. The others in his team train numerous other recording artists. I'm no trainer but his CDs and online tips have helped me a lot
Lol, anyone checking my stuff, would find this video useful for me. I have quiet a few troubles, to sing, a small room, that's not too bright for sounds, and english, isn't my native language. Thanks a lot, pal.
Try raising your soft pallet. In else try making a "ng" sound to find out where it is. To know if it is raised hold your nose shut and try making the tone come out of your mouth :)
All these people criticizing brett...When you have a proven track record of over 10 years of successful teaching...some of your students being some of the finest up and coming vocalists...Then you have a platform to speak as a knowledgeable critic. Brett is a proven teacher and artist, He does not have to nail a song perfect for an example. He just needs to be able to demonstrate effectively the techniques he teaches. Which he does so fine.
@SingingSuccess I sincerely hope u take notice of this! I'm going through the Singing Success course and I've realised that during my first bridge there is a little unintentional vocal fry that I can only get rid of with cough syrup :P I've tried googling answers for it since Brett hasn't really tackled this issue in "singing success" AND "mastering mix". Please make a video concerning this issue! THANK U SO MUCH! and you ROCK :D
hehe, ya this is the best vid to be the first one for me to watch him. I couldn't help but laugh, Im sorry. But whats even funnier is I went into my room and cried, and took his advice. Hey and it works great. Mike says hi Brett.
I find it difficult to feel the difference between strong vocal cord closure with a clear tone and a vocal fry. If I try to compress a lot of times I get vocal fry. I can sing without vocal fry but most of the times it will be breathy. Anyone any tips for that?
Just because you don't singing classical music doesn't mean you are not good at singing. You asked which popular artist and I answered. Also, what I said was that they have a sustained music career. Usually when you are a pop artist, you sing shows almost every day, with jet lag and lack of sleep, perhaps with a cold, and yet they still sound great live. Lastly, you can see him giving Hayley Williams a vocal lesson in a video, and you can read a personal review from Keith Urban on Brett Manning
So how do you practice it? I just don't feel like I've got enough power over my cords to sense whether I'm "compressing" or not. Are there exercises or vocal sounds that help train it?
@YahHhrly why did you reply to my comment in saying pavarotti sang when it was popular to sing(s) dark and heavy? What does that have to do with anything? I was talking about how pavarotti when he sings in chest, he places the sound perfectly so there isn't strain. When they sing in chest, they're all straining and reaching with their necks because they're used to doing it incredibally lightly without much effort with headvoice
oh man i love the sounds you make ..rofl!! just great dude ...ppl pay and study for years to get what you are teaching here no joke.... hehe u should do some voice overs for pixar Brett thank you brett especially for adding some classical techniques into the mix.
OMG this is what Ive been looking for for exactly 3 months =D I can reach high notes but only when I sing low but its also breathy =O when I try to raise the volume and try to extract the sound from my diaphragm my voice completely cracks and goes into falsetto or which ever goes into very light high voice =/ Im going to try this video but is there anymore suggestions I can get? And Ive always wanted to ask this does it matter if im 17 and im trying to do this? Is my voice fully developed?
According to who? He trains thousands of singers, and many of which are popular artists who have a sustained music career. He also works with a handful of other vocal trainers, so you can expect them to share the best tips between each other.
Here are simple facts: "Everyone is born with more or less the same vocal chord", "Everyone have their own signature voice pitch", "It is not about having good or bad voice..", "The difference between people who can sing and people who can't sing is simply just practice and training"
Some of them say, sing with an open throat, now I hear about this cord closure, confusing.OK what to do and how to do it correctly? You say master it, but HOW exactly?
To master cord closure you have got to practice. Now what do you practice? We have plenty of programs and coaches that can help. If you don't want to purchase anything then you can study our videos and take advantage of our free 15 minute consult. Let us know if you have any more questions.
Yes! We don't cover this topic too much on vocal tips, because it is dangerous and could lead to serious damage if not done correctly. But it is something that we coaches teach people regularly here at the studio. -Benny
@septichka true. Pavarotti does NOT sing like brett (near the top). it's a lot better placed, most of the time i hear it(chest voice being sung by brett and his friends) being placed not in the head but near the back of the mouth, just behind the nasal cavity.
If you really listen carefully what Brett is explaining here, you get the key to becoming a great singer for free.....as a man, simply ask yourself: when was the last time I cried deeply ?
@BrandNewFireworks A tip that from me, that works for me really well and I'm a guy and can hit very high notes... so before I'll give you my tip I'm not a coachj ot liscenced by any means but I' have experienced that this tip works for me like Brett has stsed once High notes are not earned they are found, singing is a disocovery process, it trakes to develop range and consistency, anyways to rech you need less air not more its paradox, buy Singing Success and sing like never before it works.
Porfavor, y muchisimas Gracias.....
@Arfat Pavarotti sang when it was popular to sings dark and heavy. As opposed to now where everything is high placed including modern performances of the opera. Sidenote...It's cool they're making education to sing available to masses but my I have issues with teaching people how to sing in their nose (i.e. Miley Cyrus) and using techniques that if misused will abuse your voice and cause long term damage.
@Tinewashere Comeon, you learn pedagogy from a book, and that is why Universities are cranking out amazing singers, NOT! . and as for Hayley, SHE ruined her own voice probably by being stuipd, and not working with Bret. Don't mock something you don't know! I am classically trained from North western U, and added his technique to my singing and i have never been better and i am in my 40's. Bret is one of the most solid teachers that you must experience to GET IT!
@MrWednesday24 You do understand what song your talking about bohemian rhapsody by no means is an easy song i'd like to see you cover it , just because you can't sing one song doesn't make you a bad singer. Just because you try to act intelligent on youtube doesn't make your opinion fact.
Ok, good for them. Just because they are a popular artist, doesn't mean that they are technically good at singing. As for using wiki as a viable source, anyone can go in and edit and put information on there. You don't have to be well versed to "train" those who are willing to buy into your nonsense. If it is working for you, then by all means I hope it continues to do so and that it doesn't ruin your voice. I am just stating what I know as both a professional musician and educator.
@1flickfinder As a singer I must say: There is no such thing as a bad voice! I have never listened to a singer who was technically singing right and sounded awfully. The point is that Manning or whatever his name is, is exaggerating! If he was doing it normally no one would notice what he's actually talking about. Teaching is very much about exaggerating (I'm a French teacher and I also exaggerate, so that my students notice what I'm talking about, after that you can switch back to normal)
What popular artists has he trained? As a music educator, I see so many wrong things about these videos that it isn't funny. There are many colleagues of mine that agree.
lol..... i was watchin this video with the sound loud and my big brother came in and hes like "what are u watching!? porn??" and my mom was like what the hell is that??' hahhaa
This youtube character count annoys me, but as I was saying, I dont think this is terrible information. Everything in excess in terrible, so that's why you need a vocal coach as a guide. Anyway, excuse the rant. I sometimes forget I'm talking to an actual person on the other side.
@Tinewashere the reason some of the things he's saying sound right is because he's just repeating what he's heard but using it incorrectly by trying to explain what he doesn't understand. I really hope this doesn't come off as being totally rude, but I can't hold my tongue when his "teaching' is going to cause long term damage and reinforce terrible habits just to gain a profit.
@dedetube A good teacher, and a good singer, are two completely different things. Actually, it's usually those who doesn't have very good singing-voices that become good teachers, since they know the voice inside and out, and know how to correct most issues that singers might experience. As opposed to a good natural-born singer, who "just sings" without knowing exactly what actually is going on :p
@bekbog I think some of the things he teaches are right, but the fact that one of his students, Hayley Williams, have severly ruined her voice (probably permanently) has turned me off from his teaching.
The Basics of Vocal Pedagogy The Foundations and process of singing by Clifton Ware is a standard university vocal pedagogy book by someone who has ACTUALLY studied the anatomy and needs of different singers. Voice is not a cookie cutter approach. Different singers, different thought process, different abilities. One size or (crazy man above) does not fit all (in his case any).
omg...i dont know which is worse, u doing pavarotti or freddie and about that 4:50...and "look at my face i am SO relaxed..." come on man. But by the looks of it... u really think u know what are u doing and some tips are actually good....i just hope u will learn your mistakes soon so these poor souls that say "brett your a genius" dont get misled to much
@gracekennyblogg Whoa calm down! I don't know much at all about singing, sheesh, it's just a little hobby of mine. If you think he's right, good for you, I can't judge his techniques on a technical level. Don't take it so personally, and don't be rude. You must understand that as a person who don't know much about singing at all, it seems suspicious that one of his students have ruined their voice. My God.. Funny how you're in your 40s but act like a 10-year-old!
PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT! . . . Anyone who believes what he is saying, please go read a Vocal Pedagogy (teaching) book. Brett got distracted by the breathy saxophone..
Great information. Best explanation i have heard about cord closure. Thanks.
my favorite video of singing success
really love it........
Best explanation bravo !!

@lilpunk144 I have that same problem! And it seems that no matter what I do, I just can't fix it! Anything past my bridge sound almost like falsetto.
you help me a lot! Thank you Brett!
is it okay if on the high notes the tone resonates in the nose alot like humming
when exercise
@BrandNewFireworks I have the same problem :// if you figure out how to fix it pleaseee let me know, it would be much appretiated! :)

@sdavistew your air flow isn't enough. try taking deeper breaths (more air) before singing a scale
This helped a lot! XD

What is the song title for @1:24
Six years later . . . a friend replies and says 'Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody'
he sounds like cris angel when he was talking. at 3:01
