Vincent Price as Oscar Wilde in Diversions & Delights

- Vincent Price's greatest theatrical triumph was undoubtedly his one-man show, Diversions & Delights, in which he played the playwright and author Oscar Wilde. While the play was never filmed, Vincent did perform a scene from the play on The Dick Cavett Show in 1978. This is, perhaps, the only audio-visual record of Price performing this role in costume.

I attended a VP performance when he played OW apx 1981 in Charlotte, NC. Excellent
Vincent Price is one of the few people on this Earth I would sit and listen to like this...
Sadly I didn't realize how much I truly loved his performances till after his passing...
It's too bad his one-man show was never recorded in full...
Luckily, it was recorded in full -- but only on a bootleg audio, and the sound quality is pretty good. Part of that bootleg is posted on this same RUclips channel.
. . . . . . . . simply wonderful, thank you.
Someone actually found a recording of this? Incredible and THANK YOU!!
I'm curious how you replied to this on YT 12 days ago when it was only just posted 2 hrs ago?
@@JaimeWulf Since there hasn't been a reply yet I'll make an assumption. Sometimes the videos that are uploaded to RUclips are shared privately by a video's uploader among their personal friends or family members, first, and then they're shared publicly. I'm guessing that comments made during the time a video is set to 'private' will show up when the video goes public, too. That's my guess as to how a 2 weeks old comment can appear on a 3-day old video clip. 🤔🤔
Cherished piece of theatre history !
I had the chance to see him do this off broadway in NYC - LOVE IT!!
This little glimpse is too tantalizing. I am at once grateful to have seen this small portion of his interpretation of this role, and also bitterly disappointed to know I will never have the opportunity to see it in its entirety.
How moving and charming Vincent was, a true professional and a beautiful soul.
So good. During the time I had a crush on Vincent Price from late 1973 to mid-1978. Vincent Price is quite the consummate actor in Diversions and Delights, where he played Oscar Wilde. You simply can't beat that for one of Vincent's non-horror role, in movies, theater, or anywhere else for that matter.
Absolute brilliance.
This is SO precious !, I'm so pleased it has survived....Thank you Peter
This is great! I didn't know Decades had broadcast this... very interesting! Post the whole thing, I'd love to see more!
Outstanding! Thank you!
That was great, thank you!
Fantastic!
The full episode of the Dick Cavett Show with a great Vincent Price interview and this scene is currently posted online over at Shout Factory TV.
That was amazing.
What?!? Victoria Price said there was no video footage of this. So glad she was wrong!
The video description states that the actual performances Vincent did as Oscar Wilde in the theatre weren't ever filmed and that this is from a re-enactment of a scene from "Diversions and Delights" on Dick Cavett's TV show in 1978.
Doubly wrong, actually. I have another very rare appearance of Price as Wilde, also in full costume and makeup, from the Dinah Shore Show in which he did another section of the play -- like this one, about 5 minutes worth -- from earlier in Act 1, which had many of Wilde's bon mots and humorous anecdotes. And, blessedly, I also got hold of a good audio recording of the entire show as well. So, with the two video excerpts and the full audio, there's a fair representation of the complete experience. But, best of all, I was able to see Vincent live as Wilde when he brought 'Diversions & Delights' to Westwood, California. And nothing can equal that experience -- except visiting with him afterward in his dressing room! I had known Vincent for quite a few years and there was no one nicer, kinder, or wittier in his profession. I really was so lucky to have known him!
And there is one other one-man play about Oscar Wilde called 'The Importance of Being Oscar' by a marvelous Irish actor-writer named Michael MacLiammoir in which he plays NOT Wilde himself, but an anonymous host/narrator who, during the course of the show, becomes Wilde, characters from his plays, and other people from his life. It was recorded on 2 lp albums and, luckily, on video as well, in its entirety. Both MacLiammoir and the show itself are brilliant and here it is:
