I completely agree and what I hate the most is that people complain about quality but still buy. If the doll collector community boycotted mattel it would force them to change. They made millions off the movie last year, they have no excuse for what they're putting out.
There's a strong bunch on FB groups who praise everything they do, no matter how ugly the outfit or doll. Loads of the modern faces are hideous and cartoonish.
Seems like EVERYTHING is dropping quality anymore. Toys suck, food items suck, movies suck, books suck, TV sucks. Its like every industry just decided to stop caring. Maybe its sub par employees, maybe it has to do with money (everything is more expensive these days), maybe they want to see how crap they can make things and drooling idiots still buy it, who knows!
Don't even get me started on food. I barely want to eat anymore, because nothing tastes like it used to. And why are our Bananas rubbery and bendable? What even is food anymore?
In recent years Mattel has made it clear who they market dolls to . The poor quality Playline dolls are meant for children and the poor quality collectors dolls are meant for Adults. This company doesn't care about making great dolls anymore , just Money $$$$ thanx for sharing 😊
I agree with you, the current Barbies are sooooo disappointing all around. It's really sad. On the plus side, as you said, we can thrift vintage dolls to preserve the legacy - and the money I save by not buying new Barbies can be put toward different dolls!
I love my old Barbies, but then you have to worry about all that toxic nastiness that leeches out of the old bend-and-snap legs. And then in the 2000s, a whole decade of dolls was ruined with glue in the heads, also probably toxic, knowing Mattel.
@@BebeDaul Woah, I'm new to doll collecting and had no idea about the bend and snap legs being toxic:( I have a bunch of 2000s barbies with those legs can you please tell me how I can find out more about this issue?
Those color reveal "cowgirls" completely miss what people like about the pink pony club and the cowgirl aesthetics. I only want the hat and boots so I can make an actually good pink pony club outfit for one of my mtm Barbies. It's certainly not something I'm willing to pay full price for though. Maybe in a few years I'll be able to find the accessories by themselves for a fair price. Even ignoring the continuous drop in quality over the years, a lot of these playline dolls' designs are just atrocious. I'm never going to look back ten years from now and reminisce on their style. The new Harley Quinn doll had good design, although a bit pricey, but the Poison Ivy doll was pretty bad. There's so many different shades of green on her and it looks like a mess. For $50, they could have sewn on a few leaves to her suit or something too. Everything looked so cheap about her and I'm not surprised she didn't sell out.
That new Dentist Barbie night might just be the lowest of the low Mattel has sunk to in terms of quality. The new pink fairy is singlehandedly carrying the next round of releases.
The excuse for the lack of quality is probably something like "less acessories and small parts are better for little kids". But shouldn't it be the point of "My first Barbie" line? Being specially for little kids while the other lines are for older kids and collectors
@@beadickel unfortunately Barbie is mainly a preschool toy so almost all the dolls are meant for younger children Funny because the 2023 My First Barbie dolls has been a HUGE FAILURE in sales plus in the 2000s the dolls for the younger demographic were the ones from the movies ( Nutcracker, Rapunzel, Swan Lake, Princess and the Pauper, Fairytopia ) and they had exquisite quality They have no excuse to make such poor quality dolls, they are just greedy

They cant even properly pose or have their clothing changed. Back then I had some Barbies and I could redress them how I wanted. Barbie could be any character I wanted her to be - that was her magic. No wonder kids don't play with toys anymore. It's not the video game industries fault, its the toy industry mostly delivering crap.
I think you are doing a great job, I really like your videos. ❤❤❤❤ I agree with you 100% ! My biggest doll disappointment of the last few days was the DC girls. I was just sad when I saw how they looked. Cheap accessories and painted leaf print on Poison Ivy, unfinished edges...just sad 🥲
This is such a shame, I lowkey thought the quality was leveling up JUST a bit after the Barbie movie, but seeing this makes me stay in the retro girlies realm. I'll never be disappointed with a 80s, 90s Barbie, NEVER. So sad to see that the kids of today will never experience the joy Barbie brought to us when we were kids. :(
the RH nitpicking and over scrutiny was so dumb and now that RH is scaling back people wanna reminisce about the older releases when they didn't support the brand back then, and now we're shocked that the doll industry is in the gutter lol
I actually agree with almost everything you said. I was a bit excited for the "chappell roan" western style color reveal but will wait until someone else buys, unboxes and reviews them. The fairy looks promising but I need to see her in person. Loved when you kissed your bicep! 😍
It's all about making money now. In the past, you could buy a doll then you could get fashion packs from any other amount of lines so your doll became like new. Not only did you treasure your dolls, but, you didn't get endless new dolls just to see a new outfit. Your base doll in the 80s or prior had a great outfit to begin with plus there were innovations with the dolls that made you play with them in different ways. Now, fb marketplace is just full full full of these, barely played with cheap dolls claiming to be Barbie with generic to ugly Sims like faces and moulded on clothing or cheap plastic printed on fabric. Mattel knows adults will spend £££ on collector dolls so they are releasing back to back collector dolls like Nanoonoo, the DC ugly dolls, squashed face Odile Gala, that new fashion tribute and very pared down Silkstones with low quality garments and jewellery. Meanwhile they know parents only care about the agendas behind the dolls and that it matches their moral ideas so kids get things that they end up barely playing with then don't want and suddenly you see lots of 30 or more unplayed with dolls that the kids had no vested interest in. Barbie playline needs to be child NOT adult driven. Collecting vtg is a nice idea but unless you live in the US or a flea market heavy part of the EU, you're unlikely to find 60s, 70s, 80s and possibly 90s dolls for a good price esp not with all their stuff. 80s are very played with and often missing items. I wish they'd decide on one face sculpt for the white Barbie like Superstar even if its Odile and build a quality line around that. Why have playline and adult become a thing allowing Mattel to squeeze more money out of collectors and short changing kids on quality. Playline used to BE quality. Poor Barbie.
I agree with most everything you said too... I'm also probably one of the odd ones out that wasn't really enthused or excited the Barbie movie and the doll releases from it 👎 I just think that they were super overpriced for what they are.... And now the the same Ken dolls that were already released with the new Ryan gosling head mold?! I don't know I just feel like they could have done a little bit something different if they were going to release them again
I wish I good go back in time stop Mattel from ruining Barbie. They only care about making bank now and not what these dolls used to represent. Ms. Handler would be so disappointed to see what happened to her company.
I started collecting about 10 years ago. Just buying catalogs worth of dolls from the 80s 90’s and early 2000’s. Might get into 70’s collecting who knows. What I can say definitively is that those dolls are so fun to open. Some of them are quite complex in their design and concept. They had instructions for hairstyling, clothing and accessories. The dolls can be posed. Not to mention that all dolls were poseable. I set up Barbie tableauxs in my art classroom. May always come over to look at the older dolls with fascination. Some tough them and marvel at the bend and click knees and the outfits and comment how they’re much better than Barbies of today. I think the problem that Mattel has besides capitalist greed is that ceo or whoever is not fan of the product. If a leader was hired that believed in the product there could be a relaunch back to thoughtfully designed product. I’ll never spend money on the stuff they put out.
Mattel uses bottom shelf fabric on their dolls. If this was a D&D game and Barbie was a drink in a tavern, you’d be making a constitution saving throw upon buying a Barbie. And don’t get me started on polypropylene hair. 😖
