The MAF sensor (mass air flow sensor) measures the amount of air entering the engine and informs the car's computer (ECU) which in turn calculates the exact amount of gasoline so that the engine delivers the GREATER POWER with LOWER CONSUMPTION.
The MAF sensor is located between the engine air filter and the throttle body, being part of the hose that joins them or is screwed on it.
There are 3-pin, 4-pin, 5-pin and even 6-pin MAF sensors.
In the case of 3 pins, the MAF sensor has: +12 battery, GND or ground, and the third pin is the voltage output of the MAF sensor.
Even though the MAF sensor RECEIVES "clean air" from the air cleaner, tiny particles always pass through which end up fouling the MAF sensor elements, MAKING IT insensitive to changes in temperature and volume of the air being taken in, leading to a failure such as one of the following: :
    Engine DOES NOT START
    UNSTABLE IDLE
    Power loss
    BLACK smoke from the exhaust
    Slow throttle response
    High GASOLINE CONSUMPTION
    Difficulty starting the engine
On many occasions it is enough to CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY with a CONTACT CLEANER spray or a MAF SENSOR CLEANER product.
When there is internal damage to the MAF SENSOR, due to a short circuit or OPEN CIRCUIT, a DTC P0100, P0101, P0102 or P0103 occurs, then there is no choice but to change the MAF SENSOR.
