The main difference to me is sitting low as in a sedan vs sitting higher as in a SUV. After driving a SUV for years, I do not like getting in a sedan where you feel like you're sitting on the ground. Thats a major point for me in choosing one over the other style.

Benefits and drawbacks to both. Any bucking or rolling (vehicle rocking forward and back or side to side) is amplified with higher seating position by 2 to 3X depending on height difference. I attribute that to why a prior GF didn't get car sick going over the Sierras on windy roads in my BMW low sedan vs her SUV.

Let me simplify this video for you. The top three reasons Tesla Model Y and 3 are selling so fast: First, they’re relatively cost effective with rebate and current pricing. Secondly, Tesla’s charging infrastructure. The fear new owners have is running out of power. It’s unwarranted given most people drive less than 200 miles per day but new owners don’t think about that. Once they realize Tesla has charging stations everywhere that unease goes away. Third, direct to consumer purchase. This is huge and nobody talks about it. I don’t know anyone who enjoys the hassle of dealing with car dealerships. Those are just my opinion of the top reasons Tesla is dominating the market.

You missed the biggest one: It’s an incredible car that nakes everything else seem old. And that include other electric cars. There is a short learning curve, but once you get it, you realize that the Tesla team has really thought about how a car should work. From user interface to the driver personalization (I share our Model 3 with my wife), to really useful storage, to the driver assistance aids to the utterly effortless charging both at home and on the road, it took all of two days to convert my wife from being a Tesla skeptic to the position of considering nothing except a Tesla as a second car.

    • @bunkie2100

I would describe the Model 3 as a slot car. I raced slot cars back in the late ‘60s and the Model 3 has all the characteristics I remember: instant throttle response, regenerative braking, and a feeling like it is glued to the road. I’m a life-long car guy who has owned some classic muscle cars as well as some of the most iconic motorcycles of their respective eras. The model 3 reminds me of some of my bikes, you modulate speed (both acceleration and braking) with the throttle. It feels alive in a way no modern turbo-4 car can.
We have been looking for a second car. One that seemed like a good complement to the Tesla is the Volvo S60 Recharge. On paper, it seems perfect: 450 combined horsepower, 30 miles of electric range. Driving it was a real disappointment. The electric motor isn’t bad, but its not up to pulling around such a heavy car. In gas mode, it was terrible. It has great power once the turbo spools up but what I want in traffic is instant acceleration, 50 years of riding motorcycles has taught me that the ability to react quickly is paramount. The Volvo turbo lag is awful. In hybrid mode, it’s better, but nothing beats pure electric power, it has spoiled me.
The Model 3 feels smaller than it is. Is it perfect? No. The interior is stark and the one great outstanding feature of the Volvo is seats that are so much better than anything else available, Tesla could could definitely offer better seats. And there is, definitely, a gap in Tesla’s product line between the 3 and the S. A mid-level model with some more features would be welcome (I miss the ventilated, massaging seats of my previous car).
Finally, I absolutely *love* regenerative braking. It makes driving really engaging. It takes finesse and encourage smooth control inputs. This is a car that rewards involved drivers.

@@bunkie2100 yeah deciding on cars is hard. I currently have a Rivian R1T. I like it a lot but I think i’m trying to make it be too many use cases. I use it to tow a wakeboard boat, drive mountain roads in the winter and as my daily commute vehicle. Plus try to make it my “fun” vehicle in sport mode. It’s fast for sure, but it’s still a truck. I think Model 3 + gas tow vehicle as a combo is my next move.

      @@bunkie2100great review.
I think what you are missing is that TESLA has feng-shui. Shuffling it off and disregarding it as “stark” is missing the entire design epistemology of engineering first principals, best part is no part and the best input is no input.
I own too many cars, 2 BMW X5M series, 2 Mercedes, a AUDI A8, Maserati, Aston Marin and a MODEL X. The Model X is the only car the family ever wants to take. My family calls the buttons/levers and dials old fashion and dumb. My wife hates buttons now. She loves her profile setup where everything is dialed in for her. No other car can do that with buttons and dials. That type of input is a thing of the past. It’s not luxury, at all.

      1. Minimalist design and has a timeless feng-shui you can’t put a finger on in a Tesla that people love. It calms them. Most people don’t care about buttons knobs and sliders. Young kids especially. Minimalist approach = software.
      2. Speed of acceleration and charging network the CCS is really a dumb plug and my wife won’t even consider another car with a large bulky cable & plug. She hates charging at anything but a TESLA charging station in our MODEL X.
      3. Software, software, software. Not just software updates, but Meaningful software updates you can customize with your phone. The driver assist in TESLA cars are so good. Just did a 600 mile road trip yesterday and it felt effortless in the MODEL X with my 78 year old dad, 7 and 9 year old boys and my wife.

Wish someone would create a DIY to replace visors which are pretty worthless as they have the curve in them. Also those door handles. Cool looking but awkward to open drivers side doors for a right handed person. I’ve owned M3 since 2018. So you end up pushing round opening area and grabbing w left hand….two hands to open a door. Funky.

Very valuable video, as usual. You could be a very good saleman...LoL !!! I want to by both of them now !!!
6:00 Very true, I wis the Model 3 was a hatchback, it would had certainly then out sell the Model Y.
--> Note: Could you compare the seating and trunk of the Model 3 against the new Toyota Prius, of very similar size but which is a hatcback.
I think that the Model 3 is a sedan because, at the time of it's design,
the Model 3 was using the BMW Series 3 and Audi A4 is a benchmark.
Without looking at the popular Hyundai Ioniq which is even smaller than the Model 3, but was a hatcback.

3 is a hatch to allow it to have a lower roofline and therefore more efficient. If a hatch the hinge would take up lots of headroom.

Hi Dave, I live in the northeast and am considering a Model Y. Do you find range drops during the winter months ? How about summers if using AC ?

    • @dconner9
      @dconner9 Год назад +1

Yes in the winter big time. Well documented. Summer? Not so much even with AC on. Whatever you think you will get according to Tesla, I would subtract 50 miles of Tesla stated range from that for the summer and 90 miles of range for the winter. (Highway driving at normal speeds) Tesla is super optimistic in the EPA cycle testing; Not real world based on my and many others usage. If I am wrong, then you will be surprised to the upside :). Check out my son Kyle’s testing of the Model y at 70 mph for a realistic baseline. But then ask yourself, do you really only go 70 when on a road trip? Higher speeds is exponentially thirsty. And cold weather is like a pro pick pocket dude at Times Square. Be realistic :)

I don't think they'd be very popular without the Federal and some state subsidies. In my state it totals over $10,000 in subsidy; and the only reason I'm considering a Model 3 over say a Prius. I am not sure I can stomach stealing from other citizens who can't afford a new car so I can buy and EV. I know i wouldn't go to 10 less well off families and take $1000 each from them so I can buy a Model 3 so having the government do it for me stinks equally.
