Yea Magnus even mentioned that the new generation of players, those born in 2003 and after, that the time is close for them to take over. Basically, the era of Carlsen, Nakamura, Caruana, Ding, etc, that era will soon come to an end. I'd say by the end of this decade. But yea it's kinda sad.

True, but he has potential to do a lot of great things with the life he has remaining. I think it will always involve the ambassador role in chess, but I would like to think he will find the urge to do a lot of good in life with his resources. I don't think we will see him move into the grouchy elder role that a previous WCC seems to be..

@@yai4486 oh absolutely. Anand's impact is huge, probably bigger than Magnus's. But as I said, anyone from the current generation would look up to Magnus the most, simply because he's the best in the present time. 1st - "The engine has helped black more than white" - That statement is factually false. At the highest level, many popular and aggressive lines for black were invalidated due to engine theory. That's where the phrase "At super GM level, a draw with black pieces is a win." comes from. For example, Sicilian Dragon and Benko are almost never played at the GM level.
2nd - It doesn't only depends on the number of wins. Fischer, Kasparov, and Karpov were always expected to win super GM tournaments. In fact, it was considered a massive upset if they come 2nd place. Magnus never achieved that level of dominance.
Magnus is probably my 2nd favorite player of all time but I was just pointing out that it's almost a guarantee that we'll see a better player than him in the next 10-15 years.

COMPROMISE: 1 game per day. 20 games total. 90 + 30 time control which means 30 second increment (rather than the standard 120/60/15 + 30). Literally cuts the time in half. 90 + 30 is actually not very much time. Fabiano has described this time control as "not very forgiving." [Citation - interview at 2022 American Cup]. Furthermore, 90 + 30 is now becoming the classical de-facto standard in many events. This is a compromise from Magnus's proposal of, say, 30 games at 2 games per day with time control 60 + 30.

We talk about players of the past in soccer, basketball, NFL, Hokey. Maybe chess feels special because a retired player still publishes books and so on, and may even keep playing like Kasparov still does sometimes, and chess history is well recorded, chess knowledge is general is very incremental and depends on past masters, other sports are very different in that regard.
