Thank you Matti and Aleksi for your interesting takes on colour and photography. Great tips on how to spot colours and how not to go over the top with editing. Yes, blue and orange are strikingly beautiful together. In Stockholm we have also our fare share of overcast days. I learned to lean into the greys and browns instead of fighting them. Though the sunny winter days with snow are well compensating for the rest.
Thanks. Yeah, Stockholm definitely can also be dark, gray and gloomy. You are absolutely right in that it makes no sense fight gray and brown because they are all over anyway😀
Thanks for your views on "overcooked colours" especially. Its something I see all the time on social media and I think it creates a shifting perception of what nature is supposed to look like. Personally, I often find myself drawn to toned down colours that rely less on that single attribute and more on good composition and careful processing.
I love these conversations you have with Aleksi. You can sense the easy friendship you have with the understated humour. I usually keep my camera on the "bright" setting, just so I can see a bit more realism than the flat RAW look. It's a psychological thing, but my mood is better when I see some life to the image. Of course, the histogram is based on the preview, so it's not great for certain lighting conditions.
Thanks for watching and nice to hear we were entertaining. At least a little😀 That's what meant in the video too. If the preview looks nice it makes the whole scene look more worthy of a photo😀
i love the Olympus colors, unfortunately the brand is dead with new tech now, but the g9ii sensor I've seen so much to like .. i didn't realize aleksi was using one until he said so but it checks out. really nice colors. (need it in a smaller body!!)
Hi Matti, I enjoyed this topic about Colours. Great variety on your channel Matti. It's good that Blue and Orange gives a good result, you wouldn't think those Two colours match, but they do. It was nice to have Aleksi as a guest and to listen to his opinions. Thanks Matti. 😊
Appreciated you folks sharing! Not a fan of colour profiles…though I’ve been impressed with some, it’s rare.. I tend to prefer what you actually see. Agree: Greens and Reds can work well!
Hi Matti, thank you for another great video with Aleksi, I hope everything is going well to both of you. Regarding the video, the main tip I take and probably also use is less is more. Aesthetically that is very true, photography is and should be mainly a depiction of what we really see. So oversaturated edits are not reality of a scenery, altough of course as an art form Liberty and Freedom are allowed. I just think the fact everybody nowadays sees images and videos through an extremely oversaturated mobile phone screen, they get used to that over cooked and over edited styles. Still, as a photographer and camera user that doesn't enjoy the editing part so much I also have my favourite color sciences. I really enjoy the jpegs I get from my Fujifilm camera (using film presets or not), and my Olympus cameras (always in the standard setting) jpegs that I edit slightly. For my film cameras, now here I have a color sciences of preference and a color science of choice, I usually tend to shoot more on the one of choice, because the choice is always the least expensive available 😂😂😂. All the best to both of you, hope to see you guys again soon.
Great video Matti. I wouldn’t choose a camera mainly based on colors science. There are more important aspects to me like size, good AF and lens selection. In my opinion many RUclipsrs have been pushed film simulations creating sort kind of hype around Fuji’s cameras that just look too overrated.
Great content as always 👍 I really love ART filters on my Olympus cameras and Ised them a lot, ART filters (film simulations) make photography more enjoyable
I played with those simulations for a bit on my 100v but then just went back to raw. So no i wouldn't. I pick my all my cameras on retro designs though😂
I bought an em1 mark1 last week only for the Olympus colors right from the camera. I have 2 Fujifilm cameras with very good image quality but I don't like the colors. I have never been impressed with the film simulations either. I guess we all have different tastes. I would like a Fujifilm camera with olympus colors please!
This 'color science' issue is not something I took much note of before (when shooting RAW and/or DSLR), but with mirrorless I admit it is indeed becoming a bit more of an issue, if only for some creative inspiration looking through the EVF (as Matti pointed out in the video). It is nice showing people a slightly 'stylized' image on the back screen too if you are taking portraits . Nikon is getting better with 'Imaging Cloud' options available to Z6iii, but not supported on their other cameras at time of writing. Hopefully it will expand to other models soon.
When I started photography in the early 1970's, everything was film, and yes, each film had characteristics of their own. I'm very happy with the digital age of photography and not having to worry about the limitations of film. Nowadays my photos look like what I saw at the time, not influenced by whatever film the camera was loaded with at the time! I can live without film simulations, thanks, the real thing was bad enough!
@@mattisulanto Not negative, just glad that we have freedom in creativity these days. I had my own darkroom for colour / BW / reversals etc. They were great days, but limited by what was in the camera at the time, or in the bag that day! The digital era no longer limits what is possible at any one time - this is great fun. Film was great, creativity was mainly in the darkroom, or with an arsenal of inks on the finished print - I loved it at the time, but Canon / Sony have given me the opportunity to take many more photos without having to do any more than sit at the PC to tidy up the usual errors.
@@the_rat_run I enjoy digital too and would not want to go back to film but in many ways film was so much simpler. Anyway, I wish the best photo moments and take care😀
All the "colour science" complaints and praises from the previous generation are mostly because of inflexible 8 bit video. What you see on the back of the screen is what you get. As your friend rightly pointed out, Sony colours were never bad for photography, as you could always edit the RAW files to get the exact colours you want. With modern cameras that shoot 10 bit video, colour science is not a problem in video too anymore. Also, the Real Time LUTs and other in camera customisation profiles are the future. Hope other companies take notes from Panasonic.
Once it is fnished and published I am sure we can discuss it in some future video with Matti and possibly provide a link to it. It is a small scale production nothing too fancy 🙂
Casual camera user here. (Even if I shoot RAW and edit it's mostly highlight-shadows-clarity-denoise etc that can be already done with lightroom on a phone) While I have found cameras jpeg colours to be acceptably 'fine', film sim or not (yes even a 10 year old Sony RX100 at home), the screen quality probably matters a bit more, as I have been left unimpressed with the Sonys in their showroom when I am quite sure they will look better when viewed at home. But I do prefer other brands when it comes to jpegs, which was also a factor when considering getting the OM5 which I am using and liking it so far. It has also reduced the need of shooting RAWs for me.
I have two cameras that I can compare, a Sony A7 and a Fujifilm X100S. And yes they have different colors. The files out of the Fujifilm X100S are, as long as you choose the right film emulation, almost perfectly fine. You can just send them off and most people would be happy. The A7 is very good when it comes to color depth, details, and so on, but has a bit more neutral take on colors. So they just look, neutral. And for some that is boring. In the end, I like both. Yes I know that a wrong choice on the Fujifilm X100S means loading in those big hog RAW files. But, usually I get the settings right. And then...I am already done. I can share/print the JPG.
Nikon fan boy here. Nikon needs to remove those useless profiles and get with some real film simulations and/or make it easy to save our own and name them in a firmware update.
You hit the nail on the head.. Shooting in RAW & JPG, color science in camera is only relative to me if/when I shoot video or shoot for the JPG. Most mirrorless cameras today offer the flexibility to change settings for a specific film look or, create your own profiles = your own look. I’d hate to spend all my money on a camera only to get that JPG ‘snapshot’. Stay creative!
They are partly doing that with their latest cameras. You can create recipes in NX Studio and download to the camera through cloud. The new Imaging Cloud service also has a library of recipes created by other people. Sounds awesome if you ask me but as you can guess, don't expect them to update older cameras with this feature. Rumors say that the Z7 II at most could be getting such an update but they had issues with porting the functionality to the old CPU.

I don t really understand this hype around color profile and film simulation except for stupid and lazy RUclipsrs who wants to push quickly pictures on social medias with a certain look …which is not their own…. Except n&b profiles ( normal soft or high contrast) because it s difficult to think black and white without seeing it and the mirrrorless cameras now gives us the opportunity of seeing it before taking the picture… so this can help but for the rest I shoot in raw and apply when necessary some presets and adjust them in post as it s far easier to see the effects on a screen rather than on a small screen or viewfinder at the rear of the camera. So this functionality on the camera itself is just not useless for me
