Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser (God Save Emperor Francis) was originally written as an anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of Austria. The lyrics were by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749--1827), and the melody by Joseph Haydn. It is sometimes called the "Kaiserhymne" (Emperor's Hymn). Haydn's tune has since been widely employed in other contexts: in works of classical music, in Christian hymns, in alma maters, and as the tune of the Deutschlandlied, the national anthem of Germany.

What test did you take? I took My Heritage and it gave me 80% Italian and 20% Central European. Only these two results surprisingly. I was hoping for some more variety 😕

My stepfather was the son of an ethnic Pole from Chomiczówka who fought for Austria in the First World War. After the war and the dissolution of the empire, he always considered himself Austrian and that his homeland is Austria. He emigrated to Argentina in 1926.
My stepfather considered himself Austrian, he passed away a few months ago. His father was called Teodor Hordij, I would love to be able to find information like his name in a registry and on which front he fought.

It was not but the territory of the Empire that made it special, but the Habsburgs, most especially Franz Josef and Blessed Karl, themselves that did. Austria-Hungary without an Emperor would be akin to a man without a soul.

The German Anthem uses this melody, but the original is this.
The melody was composed for Franz V of Austria who was the last Roman Emperor.
And the one who elevated the Archduchy of Austria into the Austrian Empire.
The original title was God erhalte Franz der Kaiser( God Save Emperor Francis)

@Mark Martinez No, the Conservatives in both countries wanted equality for the many ethnicities but the liberals, as in the 1848 revolution, did not. The creation of a third Kingdom was proposed and talks occurred during the War and Austria, as well as the Kaiser, wanted Hungary to agree but they had no way of pressuring the Hungarians, due to the War. The Kaiser learned many of the Empire's languages and had immense support from the Austro-Slavs as they opposed Russia.

Given all the infighting between the ex Austria Hungarian republics like the polish-Czechoslovak war and yugoslavias ethnic tensions makes the dissolution of this grand empire a tragedy, even Churchill knew this as he regretted the empires collapse and tried to restore it partially after ww2

Yes. They both use the same tune. It was made for Emperor Francis I of the Holy Roman Empire by Franz Joseph Haydn in 1798 or around that period (cant exactly remember).
Wow, How a great heritage from Holy Roman Empire! Miraculously, it wasn't forgotten by germans, prussians and austrians due to Napoleon's influence in Europe in 19th century. And thanks for answering me :)
