    I would think it's more character development rather than writing somebody differently. I think Floki sensed something with Ragnars passing. I'm also pretty sure he mentioned feeling hollow and empty earlier in the episode. He hated christians because they followed a god Floki obviously saw as 'false' but with these new people he's just found, he never saw any gods, but they were praying with passion and without fear.

      Also remember how Helga brought a girl with her? Maybe she will be like Athlestan was to Ragnar and she will teach him her faith and her language. I can totally see that happening. He probably wont fully switch over but he will be interested just like Ragnar was in Christianity.

    • @Syndor12

      Magpie
      See the problem is you're looking at this like it's the same Floki we've known and loved from the first 3 seasons, it's not.
      "Maybe it would have seemed more natural if it had happened more over time"
      What you're forgetting it's been around 10 years since we last saw Floki. A lot of things changed in that time jump and this would have been one of them. Yes he only mentioned it to Helga in the last few episodes but who knows how many years he's felt this way. Maybe after Ragnar left and their failure in Paris he began to lose hope with the gods, and it's grown over time. We just haven't seen it happen on screen.

    • @Syndor12
      @Syndor12 7 лет назад +1

      *****
      The only way the show can address it is by making his say things like "I feel hollow and empty" etc. They can't really show us how he transitioned to this point because it all happened during the time jump. I guess you can call it lazy writing, but there isn't an easy way to address all that has happened unless we get a lot of monologue about Floki's past and I doubt we'll get that.

    Lagertha killed Ragnar´s wife, she killed the mother of his sons, her sons brothers mother. Aslaugh was a horrible person, but in my opinion there are problems with what Lagertha did. I´m not sure I agree that Kattegat was hers either. Ragnar became an Earl, then he choose to be with Aslaugh, then he became king. Kattegatt was Ragnar´s, not Lagertha´s. Either way, it´s a sign of a great show when people want to discuss moral questions like these :)

    • @Drewe223
      @Drewe223 7 лет назад +18

      You pretty much summed up my feelings perfectly. Aslaug didn't "take" or "bewitch" Ragnar, Ragnar chose Aslaug over Lagertha. I honestly cringe any time Lagertha talks about how Aslaug "bewitched" Ragnar.

    • @Luffym3
      @Luffym3 7 лет назад +2

      Which makes Aslaugh a trooper, deserving to be queen! :)

    • @XaeeD
      @XaeeD 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah as much as we want to like these characters, they do some questionable shit every now and then. Ragnar took Aslaugh as a wife, because he wanted sons, and he believed she would give him more sons. That shit was important to people of old; offspring, legacy, you know. Lagertha was wrong for taking her life, even if Aslaugh was a bit of an asshole. By the way, to anyone who speaks German, that name literally sounds like butthole. Go to Germany and yell her name at someone, see what happens..
      Anyway, I think it's safe to say this show has no real moral authorities in terms of characters, with the possible exception of Albert, Athelstan's son.. pretty much all other characters live in that grey area. Actually, Floki's wife probably is one of the best people in the show, morally speaking, as she hasn't really done anything bad in as far as I can recall.
      Floki's character developing is actually pretty realistic. It would make sense for him to evolve somewhat. Well, we don't know how his experiences in Algeciras will effect him, but he did seem to respect the muslim's devotion in prayer. Remember, religion and faith is important to Floki, and seeing that devotion (standing in prayer without stopping, even when surrounded by armed enemies) must be quite amazing to him.

    • @Drewe223
      @Drewe223 7 лет назад +6

      So when Ragnar chose to keep fucking Aslaug while Lagertha was leaving, you dont consider that a choice? Was there some magical force keeping Ragnar attached to Aslaug that I dont know about? I love Ragnar, he is one of the best characters ever, but he totally fucked Lagertha over.

  • @quezcatol

    I think it wasnt anything they saw, just voices they heard in their own head- but at that time, back in those days, you took it as a voice from a god. there is a viking poem, "rigstulan" which speaks for ex of a jarl who heard raven and then got the thought of lands to plunder, sent from odin- he thought.

  • @emilie11291
    @emilie11291 5 лет назад +3

    22:49 this might just be my hot take, but I think that the reason the show shifts on its stance on religion and whether the Gods or Odin exist etc is because the show in an of itself is not trying to have a particular stance on those things, and instead, it shows you the world through the eyes of the protagonist(s). It's like how in the very first episode we see Ragnar and Rollo kill their adversaries in battle and we see Ragnar have a vision of the valkyries taking his foes to Valhalla. The show is not telling us in that scene that Valhalla or the valkyries are necessarily real, it's telling us that Ragnar BELIEVES they are real, and therefore that is HIS reality. As Ragnar becomes less of a believer and becomes more consummed by his anger, we also see a much cruder and bleaker reality and we don't get his "visions" anymore. I think in this episode, the protagonists have now become Bjorn and the rest of Ragnar's sons who DO believe in the Gods, and therefore we now see the world through their eyes, a world in which Odin and the Gods do exist, and that's why we see them see (or do they?) Odin.

    • @Drewe223
      @Drewe223 7 лет назад +12

      Probably, but it also likely has to do with the writers thinking it would be pretty repetitive to have Odin saying the same thing to all the sons. It makes much more sense for him to say it once, so the audience just gets it.

    I'm kind of glad they didn't do it that way, because it would be a waste of a lot of potential for good stories about Ragnar's sons. All his sons go on these incredible journeys and shape the face of their part of the world, and I think I'd have hated it if they just cut all that off and ended it with Ragnar's death. Ragnar's death, like you said, isn't the end game. It's the catalyst.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 7 лет назад

      Also, I think you underestimate Aslaug and the damage she could have done with her scheming if she was left alive. She would have gone to the nearest Earl, seduced him like she did Ragnar, and convinced him to gather up an army and take Lagertha down. Lagertha knew this, and she couldn't let that happen. There was *no* way Aslaug was just going to walk away into obscurity. She was too scheming and too much in love with her position to just let it go.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 7 лет назад

      Okay, last bit. I think the thing with Floki is that this is character development. I think the only problem with a show that moves so fast with all the time jumps is that you forget just how long it's been. It's been so long that children *born* during the show's timelines are all grown up. Bjorn, who was just a kid when the show started, has kids of his own now. That's a long time for characters to develop and change.
      I think with Floki, he's probably realized just how much shit his hatred for other religions got him into. He may not understand it in so many words, but I think he at least realizes that murdering Athlestan did nothing but cause problems. And, I think, he watched them and saw how calm and brave they were in the face of these men who came to kill them. The people praying weren't running around screaming, like the people in the church did. They calmly kept praying. And when that guy got beheaded right in front of the other one, he didn't run or try to attack. He just stood there calmly, accepting his fate. Maybe Floki respects that.

      This may be a spoiler, i dont know whether or not it actually is because ofcourse i haven't magically seen the remainder of Season 4 (or maybe even 5) so if you read this, be warned; but as a reaction on Ragnar's death Ivar, Björn, Hvitserk, Ubbe and Sigurd may gather an great army (greater then that of William the Conqueror, who is, fun fact a decendent from Rollo) invade england and conquer all of it except a small part of Wessex. The Great Heathen Army it was called, i think they probably might do this since t is historically accurate and would also make for a great war season were a lot of new characters may be introduced, a lot of character's may develop more in certain ways and old characters may be killed off

    • @icommentnl9156
      @icommentnl9156 7 лет назад

      About Floki btw; I think this is because of Ragnar. He knew how heartbroken he was after Athelstans murder and how he punished him for it, atleast, how Björn did. Now as he most probably already thought Ragnar was either died or would die (Because of what ragnar said in their last conversation) he protected them out of respect for Ragnar. And to show off his loyalty even after his death

    i think with floki, he respected that they were so into their religion and prayer that they couldnt care less that they were being attacked. as soon as one died, another took his place. that level of commitment to religion spoke to floki, because floki always felt close to his gods, and he may have lost some of that recently. i think this will reignite his love and commitment for his own religion. bit like harald and halfdan, they too are very religious thats probably why they were okay with not killing anymore of those praying muslims.

    First I believed Bjorn would be the son of Ragnar that would kill Lagertha in some kind of mercy killing, maybe after Lagertha being wounded in a battle. But now I wonder if Magnus really is Ragnar´s son, then he could be the one to kill her. I find it hard to believe that the other sons would kill her, considering how Bjorn would feel about it. It´s a longshot, but I just feel they won´t go for the obvious.

    • @Drewe223

      So, he can be the "trickster", by *really* not being a son of Ragnar but killing her, while pretending to be one?
      That is an interesting option...
      I mean, it may be that he really isn't a son of Ragnar. BUT, Aetherwulf told he to tell everyone he meet that she is Ragnar's son. So if he gets (?somehow), into a position of killing Lagertha, he fulfill the prophecy: He is a son of Rangar BUT, he is a trickster because he's actually not :)

    Sithfurion when ragnar died Ivar and Bjorn had already made their own names. For some reason in the show they have made Ivar the youngest son. According to actual historical evidence, Ivar tricked King Aelle into believing that he will pursue no revenge, if he paid the wirgild for ragnars death which was a large sum of gold and silver. Ivar promised to keep the peace and Aelle allowed them to stay in York and help with any Vikings raid. Instead when the 70 ships arrived in the York coast Ivar instructed 2/3 of the fleet to leave and come back with more ships to create the great army.

    The one eye guy is obviously Odin its known that Odin sacrificed one of his eye for something ( i dont remember what exactly) and in the last episode it wasnt Ecbert at Ragnar's executuion but Aethelstan because Judith was so surprised when "Ecbert" kissed her before leaving and the long walk through the beach to reach the place of execution looked like a pelerinage to say goodbye or maybe Hello to Ragnar

    if u think about it for a while what Floki been through not killing those ppl who were praying makes so much sense its been alot of years.. and was something Ragnar wouldve done
    also fun fact why there wasnt so much military in that city was because it was south spain and the muslims were conquring north spain at the time so most military was up north

    I'm sorta of the mindset that when it comes to the lagertha+Aslaug deal I think Aslaug knew she was a goner and in her speech asked to be left unharmed if she split... but could she be meaning unharmed as in don't mess up my body let me go to the afterlife sexy as I am now?
    Lets not forget Aslaug was a volva (nordic witch) I think part of ragnar and her relationship souring was him coming to understand that he was bewitched... and lagertha had pretty much concluded that ragnar was charmed by her. So I could see Lagertha thinking.. now is the time to take my kingdom back and my man! Don't forget most of them were working under the assumption ragnar was unkillable seeing as no blind man would be seeing him.
    The tension and comfortable yearning that has been Ragnar's and lagertha's story has been absolutely beautiful to watch play out.

      averitas that's the dumbest thing I've read in these comments lmao humans have been taking psychedelic and psychoactive drugs of all sorts and in various ways, literally since the dawn of humanity... and ragnar was at the gates of Valhalla yes, then they were shut in his face and he screamed at the heavens in vain... then when to Paris and everything happened. A monster of his own fate, not the gods.

    Odin / Zeus ... they are the one eyed god. The EYE in the SKY. Some say it was Saturn in an earlier era. I have also heard TIAMAT....the destroyed planet that is now the asteroid belt. Word is, Tiamat was a water planet with one piece of land....as you see or stargate Atlantis... the one piece of land the size of Australia.... IT LOOKED LIKE AN EYE BALL.

      locomojoboy2 So did Ragnar before he met Aslaug. Torvi isn't the daughter of a king. The seer told this prophecy to Ragnar during the time that Bjorn and Lagertha left to live in Hedeby. Ragnar asked what will become of Bjorn.

    This Lagertha isn't Lagertha that I used to love. She became older, disappointed, jealous, inconsistent women.
    First she usurped Ragnar, and in some way Bjorn (this isn't hereditary monarchy but he is the main guy in Kategat for some time, and Aslaug wasn't queen by her own right, she was it because she was wife of the king).
    Secondly, she criticized Aslaug couple episodes ago for "look what have you done with this place", and now she says that kategat flourished and become biggest trading center in Norway. Wtf Lagherta.
    Third, she bewitched my husband. No she didn't, he chose her because she could bore him children. Pls it's all pathetic. And it can all lead to fight among brothers because hers stupidity.
    I lost all my respect and love for Lagertha, and I really don't wanna her story to be dragged to season 5. I really loved her but she's a heavy burden right now, and pretty dumb character.

    In history books, Vikings attacked muslims at their golden times! so, the muslim caliphate knew about the vikings after what the did to spain which was an arab muslim country at that time and prepared an army and defeated the vikings!

    I think that when Floki saw those people worshiping their god with such devotion, was like the same devotion that he has about his gods. I loved the Odin's part (yeah, was really Odin) mixed with Ragnar speech. Great reaction, Sith!

    Tonight is the time, ep 17... :)
    4L27 Hey :) Well, it's not exactly hate to Lagertha as a whole, just to what become of her now. We were all fans, at least most of us. But she is turning into a villain... She made something so selfish and stupid that she can't redeem it by just counting on her past. And in order to make justice to the historical character, she must die. The real Ivar would've tortured to death anyone who would've killed his mom (Not to mention he and his brothers were kings at the time, possibly). Plus she didn't even had a purpose other than murdering Aslaug.. She said it in this episode, she never really wanted to be a queen . But now she feels like Ragnar is watching her so she has too.. Umm, Lagertha? Don't you think that if Ragnar is watching' he would've approve you killing his wife and dethroning his sons? And if she thought Ragnar would come back and just be her king like nothing happened... Well, yeah :\ Plus if that's the case, why the hell is she with Astrid lol I could see Astrid being a fan girl and a cuckqueen for the power couple LagNar, but still, this should make sense and this option is crazy :)
    15:45 Exactly... They are making him into something I really don't like, because it makes no sense. He never tried to understand what Christianity was about. He hated it just because it is a different faith. Now there are some who say that he was impressed by how fanatic the Muslims were in their prayer. Well, he martyred a bishop who silenced his screams, that didn't change him. And in the churches he butcher there were women and children, not just men. It's a whole different deal when you know your wife and daughter are about to get raped and butchered in front of your eyes... No real man would continue praying and not try to stop it.
    And Helga... I love her, I love that she finally stood up to Floki, but... She just took a child lol She may still have a father, family, relatives... It's not like going on a ship to a dangerous journey with people she don't know would be better for her... But if Helga wants, Helga gets I guess :)
    The one eyed guy was... Odin himself :) It was an epic scene. It's like in the saga, he comes to tell of Ragnar's death.

    From the moment Floki heard the Muslim chant singing thing (It probably has a proper name but idk what it is. If someone knows let me know. I personally find the singing thing beautiful the few times I've heard it.) but from the moment he heard it, I was like "Is he gonna convert? @.@" I probably said it like 4 ot 5 times while watching the episode.

    People change, Floki's getting older, wiser as Ragnar did.Could be sick of all the killing, might be fascinated my the devotion to invisible and absent gods.
