20 years ago I took my Toyota Corolla to a local garage about a vibration in the transmission. Two guys looked it over for an hour and couldn't find anything and didn't charge me. That honesty worked and I have been taking all my cars there ever since. Honest pays.
Seems like a better idea would be to find a good used stock engine and install that instead of messing with Herr Frankenstein currently living under that hood.
Well, this is the tough part. That might not be as easy as it sounds. What about the computer? Wiring? That could end up being more work! The best start is what they got. Is good heads, intake and exhaust that all work? The block is just the air pump side that contains the boom.
@@Dozav7I wouldn’t call this truck or other Dakotas with the V-6 or V-8 (318 or 360) unreliable. But in general, Chrysler is generally towards the bottom of the barrel when it comes to reliability and longevity
That is actually a very nice truck. Those magnums are cheap even for a rebuilt longblock. Why a shop will say 8-10grand is beyond me. With access to a lift, tools and everything that engine can be pulled in a couple hours. A full master rebuild kit with optional performance pistons is under a grand, heck even from jegs a stock master kit us under 500. So if all you need is a shortblock, 800 bucks, plus the master rebuild kit, and let us pad that and say 2000k in parts. The rest is labor. Those dodges are like square body chevys. Easy and cheap to work on. Also as a point of reference, the r/t package is literally just the stock 245hp 5.9 magnum in the dakota instead of the v6. The stock 5.9, is the exact same in the vans and fullsize trucks. Nothing is different. But getting into the tuning and such after a bunch of work, that is easily 300 to 1000 right there. Not knocking the wiz at all, just saying these trucks are cheap to work on.
In my experience with government auctions they tend to be more open and honest about what they are selling. If you ask specific questions and their answers don't match up with reality when you go to pick up you can request your payment back so long as you refuse to take possession.
I would never buy something expensive (over $1,000 or even $500) that I can’t test drive! Even buying something from Shift gives me the chills… I have to buy it to see it?
That's a Mopar M1 2BBL intake with a factory throttle body and fuel rails, so there's not really anything THAT racy on there externally. It appears to be factory cast iron heads, too, but I can't get a great look at that to confirm. The Spintech headers are using port plates so it's definitely the factory port layout. That said, buy a factory 5.9L for $200 for the junkyard and throw the M1 on it and this truck would be back in business and not really any appreciable amount slower than it is now.
Yup very stock for sure. The keg intakes suck (oil) those Mopar m1 are much better than stock. I have a Hughes on mine with a Hughes cam and get 20 mpg out of my 99 Rango. Great motors if they are maintained.
@@mickeyfox5 I've had a 2BBL M1, 4BBL M1 (with adapter and 55mm F&B TB) and a kegger on my trucks. A kegger with the belly pan plate fixed is fine for stock 5.9Ls as the cams are tiny and there's no compression. I was getting north of 20MPG (on 93, though) in my '98 CC with a Mopar R/T+10 cam, 1.7 rockers, and the 4BBL M1/F&B combo on a FlyinRyan tune before that engine got pulled to go into another R/T. The bottom end loss on the 4BBL is greatly exaggerated, especially with any sort of cam upgrade.
I had a 2001 Dakota that I LOVED, I did all kinds of work to it, new transmission, new battery, had plans to replace all the speakers and audio equipment, new intake manifold gaskets, new headlights, etc. it caught fire while I was trying to replace exhaust manifold gaskets and insurance didn't want it on the road anymore. It was a V6 manual and even though it was slow it was probably the best vehicle I've owned so far
You know, the whole video just exemplies why I love this channel so much! An interesting problem to start with, great professional analysis, breaking things down so non-mechanics understand the issue and finally the human touch (not charging the customer who is already out of pocket).
My 99 dakota sport i bought new. 3.7 engine. Transmission rebuild once at 177k. Over 308k miles now. Engine never been touched except for spark plugs and water pump and alternator. Still has original plug wires and distributor cap. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
I just bought an 03 Durango with the 5.9. Old first Gen Dakotas and Durangos are starting to gain popularity. Mine had 133,000 on it when I got it. Its hard to find them with that low a mileage. Most I was seeing were 200,000 miles plus in the 2500 dollar price range. I had wanted one with the 5.2 because I knew the 360 just isn't as Durable and the performance difference is hardly noticeable compared to the 318. Just none were available. The one I bought I travelled 70 miles to get and gave 2750 for it from a dealer. All things considered despite it going to need some repairs I think I did okay. I am not against using race parts when they are in fact better than stock parts and are compatible with stock parts. The factory barrel intake manifold on the 360 are notorious for leaking. The 5.9 is also notorious for its thirst for gasoline. Switching the intake helps with both those issues. As you stated they are also notorious for cracking heads. If you have to change them why not to a head less likely to crack? It's like on early Mopars they used nylon teeth timing gears and single chains. I'd always replace them with a steel gear double roller chain set for longevity. So I disagree that seeing race parts on an engine is a bad thing. I also think your 10,000 dollar repair quote points more to shops gouging on repair prices than an honest and reputable quote. Just like the person who put it for auction without disclosing the issues was gouging.
The only thing that bothers me about racing parts on a daily driver, is the fact that usually means they have been raced. I definitely understand what you are saying, and agree that I would do the same. But, if I'm buying something to drive as a daily, I would be scared to buy something ragged out. My buddy bought a S-10 (think it was a '98). He didn't know anything about vehicles. I told him to let me go with him, but he went by himself anyway. Well, when he pulled up, I immediately noticed a GMC grille, and a very non stock stance. I said, "so you got a sanoma?" He no, it's an S10. Turns out, it was both. Lol It was definitely someone's drag truck. It still has the clamps for the nitrous in the back. They had taken off the racing wheels and tires. It had basically rollers on it. He kind of lucked out though. They had done A LOT of work to it, and it all pretty well done. It had the 4.3 v6 with obvious motor work, racing suspension, a built 5 speed, traction bars, and a sweet sound system. He asked why this light on his pillar kept flashing😅. It was a shift light. That thing was pretty quick, and handled really well. He drove it for about two years before the head gasket started leaking. He put some blue devil in it, and drove it for another year before he wrecked it. It could have been really bad though.
The thing is they can be stock and still had the hell beat out of it. Certain cars with certain engines you know that is going to happen. The difference between my SLT Durango and an RT Durango is five HP and mostly appearance mods. @@letsdothis9063
@@Zachrax It is by year if you compare it to average yearly miles driven! Also compare it to other 360 Magnums with mileage in excess of 250,000 miles.

I owned a black 2000 Dakota r/t just like in the picture. Bought it new. The thing was crap. Always replacing brakes, trans issues, bad paint, electrical issues, 9 miles to the gallon on a good day. Never again. That was new.
ALWAYS See a car before buying it !!! I THOUGHT I bought a deal of the century for $7,500 "Buy it Now" for my 50th, SITE UNSEEN! I was safe cause of the Ebay Money back Guarantee My wife said "You want it, you deserve it for your birthday!" so I did it! 1970 Nova YENKO edition, Candy apple Red with Black interior with the White Yenko seat treatment inside, off Ebay but was enticing me by an upgrade like a "Corvette 5.7 and a 5 Speed" Looked soooo good in those pictures. I immediately paid for it, then called the guy. He said "You can't buy that car, it's already sold last night!" I freaked, but he assured me I'd get my $ back. He was actually represented by a dealer who was reputable, and I called the Dealer and he was all apologetic and even gave me $100 for the issue. I thought no sweat always another. About a month later, the Dealer called me and said if I still wanted the car, a guy about 5 hrs away in a little town, with a wife and 2 little ones. He was the one who bought it the day before. Sadly he had sold his PERFECT 1970 Nova for the same $7,500 two years before cause of hard times. Now cause he had some cash save up, this was to be his replacement. I met him and he showed me the car. It was a total gutpile! A Mud Bucket waving at you going down the road! The Black interior was originally green and painted over black and would scratch off with fingernail, The carpet was cheap auto carpet from a Building store NOT Custom. The engine had HUGE Misfires and backfires. 5th gear was popping out. The suspension was SHOT! There was Mud dust throughout!!! He said he'd take whatever I would pay within reason. The Dealer got screwed too... He told me that sadly for him, he cut a deal with the guy the day before I bid, and by going around EBAY's Buyer Protection, the buyer had no recourse, and l the Dealer got screwed out of his commission too. There was NOTHING the dealer could do, and could you blame him if he could do something, he didn't? They went behind his back!
@@ExUSSailorI wouldn’t say it’s that bad. Other than some stupid aftermarket stuff that can easily be changed it looks like it’s just a clean truck with a bad motor.
Wizard, I really, really appreciate your channel because your humanity shows through, in addition, to your passion for vehicles. Your commitment to honesty and integrity is evident.
I’m really surprised at how confused the wizard shop is, over a simple build like this. Any reputable shop can look at the cam #’s, figure out required spring lift, verify heads have right springs (which almost all aftermarket heads come with some high lift springs), toss a short block into it, and be done with it. I’d be more worried about what kind of shape the transmission is in, with the added power and miles. Not sure why you blew this up like it’s some monstrous issue. It’s literally a short block swap and sending in the old as a core. You really made this video sound like you’re an oil change shop, troubleshooting an engine.
My thoughts exactly. The wizzard has enough easy work, to turn away harder work. He would rather lick gravey, than pick bones. I painted cars for a living. When the shop was flush, I turned down anything I didnt want to do. When the shop was slow, I'd paint anything. I even painted a refridgerator once.
You realize that he didn't say they couldn't deal with it. He said they wouldn't deal with it. Big difference. If they touch the engine they own it and all the problems that come with it. Further the engine has been tuned, meaning the software running the engine is unknown and they don't have the equipment or expertise in dealing with that issue. In short, he is being ethical and protecting himself by sending the customer to someone who specializes in this kind of thing and can take care of everything all at once.
He doesn't have a dyno. I am not sure building and then tuning a race engine without a dyno would be that brilliant. Sounds like a pretty awful idea, actually, even if you can make it work.
Ikr, I mean IDK what the customer wants but he could just put in a junkyard 360 and swap parts like the intake and headers on and have the ecm sent out to be retuned to stock parameters pretty cheap
I gotta agree with you. Their reaction to these mods are a bit scary for a mechanic... Also, overall, this truck seems to have been LOVED. The engine may be bad, but overall it looks like a great find if they didn't overpay...

Considering the engine is a magnum engine, one option if the engine has to be torn down again is a 408 stroker. I do recall reading comments in the forums on these kits that it unlocks a lot of power with these engines. It is just a stroker kit, but you can also machine the cylinders for more displacement. It depends on how much money the customer wants to put into this truck. Now it is getting harder and harder to find one that isn't all rusted or beat up as these trucks are now 20-plus years old.
Jaykuda02 I have 3 dakota trucks best i ever had first truck 538,448 miles, 2nd truck 377,363, 3rd truck 03 has a carburator holley 650, cam headers, fairbanks shift kit 2500 stall, with the factroy ECM runs 11.89. 167,783. all still have most OEM parts. with the 42RE transmission as for the olive green truck if someone put moly piston rings that can be a problem takes longer for the rings to seat set in, dont like moly ring, always use cast ring.. never failed me. those engine block are great, this trucks are cheap to keep, easy to work on, and parts are plentiful if you need parts.. love my trucks.!

this isn't a "rAcE cAr" it's a mildly (albeit poorly) built engine... nothing else about that is "race" it's just a pile of dodge.... very typical for that brand to be garbage with 100,000+ miles
I've seen a car go airborne after it couldn't see blacked out taillights on the highway and literally went up a htachback just like a jump ramp. If I see them on any car, I know the driver has no grasp of safety and question what else they did to the car.
Blacked out taillights are the dumbest thing in the world. Do people really think a taillight makes their car look bad? And the solution is so nobody can see you at night??? Insane
I've seen some people black out their headlights lol. I never really understood doing that on either side, if it's a show car and only is ever meant to be a show car then fine I guess it can look better. But not having visible lights is so stupid. A lot of people these days are actually doing it right though they'll take the light housing apart then color match the internals but still keep a clear lens then reassemble it which is the way to go if you really care that much, but that obviously takes a lot more money / time / effort.
Mr. Wizard is a true gentleman with a good heart... Hope the buyer get it sorted and for a acceptable total cost. A friend of mine bought one little Mercedes van for cheap that wasn't running and a few shops had worked on it so a lot of new parts mounted but still not running..... I suggested looking in the fueltank as it was low on fuelpressure and acting "starwed" and it was full of "dieselfunghus". Once cleaned of that muck it did run and turned out to be a good buy. Still a very bad performance of the shops that worked on it to not find such a easy fault, it is quite a common problem here in Sweden with our bad fuels. ☹️
Yeah, modded cars are a WALK AWAY for me. Those cheezy eBay / amazon headlights and dress up bits show they didn't use quality parts either, huge red flags...
@@chadhaire1711 true, I would have only offered what I felt the body and interior were worth to me. With heavily modded cars sometimes they do sell for those low prices when no one bites.

I'm not paid and this isn't an ad, just thought I'd back up Wizard's ad with some firsthand experience with the product.
On the bright side. This truck is a hotrod, and was clearly meant to be someone's hotrod. If it was mine my options would be to 1. Stick a junkyard 5.9 in it, they can be had around here for around $1100. Or else the body and the rest of the truck looks to be worth it, so this would be a prime candidate for someone to LS swap. Hopefully they didn't pay alot for it at the auction
Stock appearing is where its at. I dont like when things are messed with, especially aftermarket lights, wheels, tires, and suspension. Most people should just leave their car alone, but they don't. People have to learn the hard way I guess. ......But it looks cool man!
Love the Grimes action! Such a solid and talented mechanic and a genuine guy. Love Danial San too. Featuring them more is a great thing. I know Daniel had his own channel but both guys deserve a special segment on Car Wizard videos.
I had a Dakota 3.9, was a good engine and trany. Never had a problem with the engine or trany (other than a blown clutch spring), in the entire 24 years I owned the truck, everything else was crap. The paint job was crap, the rear brakes were crap, the door parts were crap, the odometer was crap, . . . .but as a work truck, it just worked. I think by the end of its life the heater core was starting to leak, but AC was still good.
If you’re just a normal person looking to buy your first enthusiast car my advice is that you’re going to have issues so just relax and expect them. Expect the worst at all times. Do your best to buy a car that has cheaper parts and is close to stock as possible. But understand if you’re buying a 25 year old car with wear and tear it’s going to always need something.
I like the stock RT better with the stainless steel alloys and the exhaust. It looks so much better but you can darken the tent a little bit and also put the HID lighting in the front but that’s all I would do to keep everything else original
I own a automotive business and I’ve encountered this twice in 15 years. I’ve been in business besides detailing and all that stuff I’ve been countered out on a Ford expedition, which was bought in an auction and it rode really rough when I took a look at it I look at the cams. They were pretty corroded and, got everything done. Hurry had aftermarket race and products cost 40 grand to do the whole entire engine more than what the vehicles worth.
One thing you have to ask yourself is why did this truck end up at an auction in the first place and by the looks of this engine and all the other modifications I think it’s pretty self-explanatory
All I can say is it’s probably worth fixing because I think these are going to be really valuable in the near future so hopefully they get the value back one way or another like just driving and enjoying it
What I have found with many auction sites is that even if you tell them what's wrong with it they don't put it on the listing because they know they can get more money. I put a 2005 Ford f450 in the auction with 370,000 miles. It had a 6.0 powerstroke with a cracked head. Only once it got up to temp. did it start burning coolant. Not only that, it had a leaking axle seal, as well as a slipping transmission. Even after writing all of that down when I dropped it off, none of that made it into the listing. Be careful out there folks.
@K20XRL As a retired business owner myself, don't think he is a con, I hope he just doesn't want to mess with it so quoting a high number gets it away from him. I could be wrong but watching for years, don't think I am. I just wanted to point out to others it isn't a 8-10K repair.
@@rossryder944that’s his prerogative isn’t it? Why take on a complex task if you’re busy enough with other work? He doesn’t have to and doesn’t want to so he doesn’t it’s that simple, why is it bothering you so much 😂
Whoever bought this rig at auction, bought it for one reason. Because of the way it looks. Not everyone would make the same design choices (painted oem wheels), but some would. So what? From 10 feet, it looks pretty good. And online photos don't talk.
Get a long block, put the intake on as it looks like the hughes f1 which is a massive upgrade just for reliability over the kegger intake since it doesn't have a plenum gasket
Bought a 2006 Dodge Dakota laramie 4x4 at a online auction. Was able to start and test drive before bidding. Didn't know the emi module was going out. After putting 1400 into transmission. Still goes into limp mode after first 25 minutes of driving. And staying in that for half a day. Garage I took it to, said computer went off line. I just bought a decent 87 Dakota 4x4 with a 5spd manual. Pretty clean for a Minnesota pickup to replace. Still like to get the 06 right. A 4.7, 4 door, and alot was done to it by previous owner. Fred from Minnesota. Appreciate your videos.
He probably did, but the shop here doesn't want to reveal a customers identity. If I had $6,000, I'd own this. Can put a new motor in for about $5,000, and have insurance and registration covered with the leftover. Check over the custom parts for usefulness, and maybe have a fun little truck once all is said and done.
Grimes is an awesome dude. Love your shop! Appreciate everything you’ve done for the community David! Our 1988 Ford Ranger thanks you. Also our Buick LeSabre 3800 series 2 and 6.0 vortec Escalade are as good as you and hoovie say they are. Best vehicles ever! Over 200k miles on all 3 cars and trucks.
Yep! If it were my truck and I had the money and time, I’d rip everything out and start from scratch. Probably save money and headaches in the long run.
"People take their problems to the auction". True 40 years ago, true now. There is some recourse at a dealer auction but a public one? Maybe, depends on the fine print in the listing.
The gap is true on all aftermarket headlamps. Dunno why but they all have the wrong dimensions. I ended up going back to OEM with ones i found at the junkyard
It's a Chrysler issue too. I bought new headlights off eBay motors and I wasn't even able to get all the bolts back in as the holes don't line up. I had to leave one out of each side. Definitely take caution when buying new head lamps as they don't always fit perfectly even if they're the exact same as the ones you're replacing.
@@GMbowtie350 I know that. OEM parts can be hard to get and/or cost an egregious amount of money. I was just pointing out the fact that even if something looks perfect doesn't mean it will be.
@@PimpinForChrist Cool. So rip that motor out, sell the good stuff left on it and now you have a little more money towards an engine that's actually going to work and be reliable.
Only buy used cars from senior citizens. I bought a 2012 RAM 1500, two door with a 5.7 Hemi. Only had 55k miles. the nice part about these engine they are super cheap and easy to rebuild, you can buy use for 300 or you can just get a short block for 1000 dollar and a long block for 1800 dollars.
Don't mind the paint job but why is everybody ruining these collectable vehicles with black wheels, removed lettering and smoked out taillights and poorly modified engines? Even with those mods I would still put a replacement used engine back in, put the original lettering back on and wheels and enjoy the truck for what it is.
So long as the auction house sold the car “AS-IS” and without any warranty (which is likely) not much customer can do. It’s why I would never purchase a house, car or any major purchase online without first doing an inspection. Buyer beware! Be smarter folks.
Never had a Dakota but I love the 5.9. Keep up on the maintenance and they last a very long time. I’ve put almost 300,000 miles on three of them with no major work done other than the intake gaskets.
Yea I had the cleanest 96 Dakota with the gloss black paint. Last year of the body style before they switched. It was tboned by an idiot and rolled. Engine didn't skip a beat upside down and had to shut it off myself.
In 2000 I bought a new blue Dakota R/T reg cab. Took it to the drag strip at least 30 times. The stock beer can intake sucks and with no aftermarket at the time sucked even more. 14.80 stock. Computer, headers, K&N intake and drag radials 14.68. If you buy one to tinker with get rid of the beer can first.
First off the appearance is gorgeous, I have a f8 green srt Durango so I love the paint job. I’ve had 2 1st generation durangos in the past, and I love those trucks. I think client needs to buy a 6.4 srt motor and there is a company that makes a plug and play setup to just connect motor to transmission on stand alone and it’s straight forward. Client would get performance and newer motor with great power.
Gorgeous truck, over 20 yrs old, grill was colour matched from new. Used engine or reman long block. Still a sweet ride. Not the end of the earth. I would sooner replace an engine that deal with hidden rust
That depends if the modifications are period correct and are quality parts. In some cases performance aftermarket parts are of better quality than stock.
"Collector car"-buy it "restored" spend 2X what you paid for it to keep it running and to re-"restore" it, then sell it as 100% "restored". Mean time deal with bad bakes, terrible steering, and everything being replaced. Maybe by a third car.....-a tow truck.....
If you have any experience with swapping engines, I'd recommend buying these. I've gotten lots and built them the right way. Wouldn't recommend it for normal non car guys but if you've done it a few times these are fun vehicles to buy for cheap

I recently watched a vid from Jim's Machine Shop - like Wizard, another really good shop - Jim's had a 327 engine that had an equally bad hone job & numerous other problems. Ages ago I did a DYI budget re-ring & hone on a mid 70s Onan generator engine. My hone job was far from perfect but it didn't look like 40-80 grit sandpaper. I knew it was gonna burn some oil, but I only needed it for occasional power failures. Can't believe what shops & people think passes for acceptable these days...
I looked at a Fox body Mustang that had extensive mods and while it probably was fast, I felt like I would have been buying a hand grenade with the pin pulled.
A better Intake is actually one of the most recommended upgrades you can do. The main thing is that you need to make sure it is compatible with all the sensors your car may have on it's stock intake. I wouldn't personally view a aftermarket intake as a red flag unless it doesn't have any of the OEM sensors going to it.
The customers only real option of he didnt want a shop to restore it is to send that back to the auction.... which is exactly what the auction companies want, they make money from the sale fees. If you are interested in an auction vehicle, have a mechanic go to the lot and inspect it... or only bid on it as a parts car. The cheap cars get much less cheap after fees and shipping.
I remember as a young twenty-something buying an eBay Nissan with a Japanese-swapped engine. Big life-learning experience. Looked great on the outside, but wiring harness mess and transmission issues galore. The seller was a kid (first flag), didn't show up for purchase (2nd flag), father (police officer) had it running when I showed up (3rd flag and maybe 4th flag). Thankfully I fixed most of the issues myself and sold it immediately after as I didn't want to wait to see what else would rear its ugly head. Many stupid mistakes but learned a lot and taught me to wrench😜
I bought an 03 Buick LeSabre from an 80 year old man, told me it was his wife’s car who passed away. I gave him $2500 for it. I did t think an 80 year old would scam me. Turns out the rear air suspension leaked and is shot, the sunroof leaks when it rains, and there’s oil getting in the coolant which turns it to mud. A mechanic told me not to put another nickel in it, i would have to junk it soon.

That’s got to be the cleanest Dakota I’ve ever seen, I never thought I’d say that.

Those headlight gaps don't look wrong to me. Dodge always had bad gaps back then. We still have our 2000 Dakota Sport crew cab. Same headlight gaps.
Maybe, but it's a common thing for the cheap aftermarket headlights to not fit well.

Unless youre an absolute Pro, dont buy stuff from online auctions. Just nonsense.
Or it's a junker
In my experience with government auctions they tend to be more open and honest about what they are selling. If you ask specific questions and their answers don't match up with reality when you go to pick up you can request your payment back so long as you refuse to take possession.
Want a Play toy with power just build up 1 yourself because it's gonna cost enough money that way.
I've always said about auctions in general - people sell things at auction they couldn't sell anywhere else.
💯

I had a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7L. great engine but the body was horrible.
Outside looks awesome but inside is pretty bland.

I said, "so you got a sanoma?"
He no, it's an S10.
Turns out, it was both. Lol
It was definitely someone's drag truck.

Blacked out taillights are the dumbest thing in the world. Do people really think a taillight makes their car look bad? And the solution is so nobody can see you at night??? Insane
Should be outlawed.
There's a world of difference between a smoke tailight that was designed to be that way, and someone who takes rattle can spy or tint to a taillight.
I love the look of a nicely smoked tail light... but I still never do it. It is just dumb and puts everyone in danger.

"People take their problems to the auction". True 40 years ago, true now. There is some recourse at a dealer auction but a public one? Maybe, depends on the fine print in the listing.
Overview by the wife was classy and most professionally done. Bravo!
The gap is true on all aftermarket headlamps. Dunno why but they all have the wrong dimensions. I ended up going back to OEM with ones i found at the junkyard
yep.. I've tried different Amazon and eBay ones. nothing fits like OEM
@@BrandonFlint-ro2nsJust because they’re new doesn’t mean they’re OEM. You can buy new parts and body panels from Keystone and still not fit right.
@@GMbowtie350 I know that. OEM parts can be hard to get and/or cost an egregious amount of money. I was just pointing out the fact that even if something looks perfect doesn't mean it will be.
It’s a shame this guy got scammed. Color and paint is nice.
I would find a used engine that goes to that truck and go stock again.
Good job wizard.
Or even throw in a hemi if possible.
Yes! Quit complaining and swap out the engine. Simple solution!
Dude, the stuff on this engine is worth more than most engines… that intake $1000, those headers $1000, all the stuff on it are at least $4000
@@PimpinForChrist Cool. So rip that motor out, sell the good stuff left on it and now you have a little more money towards an engine that's actually going to work and be reliable.
Part the engine out and you'll get a fair bit of change to get a stock unit
Jody, (the previous owner) of this Dakota is getting DRAGGED in the Dakota groups. Thanks wizard for exposing this!!!!
Jody is a douche and everybody knows it. Dudes name is Jody what do you expect
Not really. Most are laughing at the “Wizard” and his bogus price and him referring everything to “Race” on the truck lol
Name of dakota forums & groups please? I own 2 so I'd like to be included I have a few ?'s I need opinions on. thanks @GreekPower....
His name is Jody, he deserves to get dragged
Only buy used cars from senior citizens. I bought a 2012 RAM 1500, two door with a 5.7 Hemi. Only had 55k miles. The gentleman was asking for $11.5k and I asked if he would take $10k and he was ok with that. Had it for almost 4 years and not had one issue.
Actually I did have to replace the thermostat. Did it myself.
I like that unmodified is much better, but colour in that modded one is very nice, but maybe it's only nice thing on that truck. 😄
Put some hot plugs in it and dump a little comet cleanser in the intake, repeat a few times and change the oil, she's good to go.
I work at an auction, and some people are not qualified to buy cars at an auction. And every week somebody will buy a stick shift car that they had no idea was a stick shift.
Very amusing. It's even funnier if the new owner is incapable of driving it home.
lol
Wow that Dakota looks nice in that green she is super clean, my friends got a 2004, spent its life in PA so it's extremely clean besides paint failing
i leased a new 1996 Mad Dak,, regular cab, short bed,v8,auto, 4wheel abs,3.90 gears, had it f 3 years, out ran every truck but a ford lightning,, and most cars ,,,2 weeks before the lease was up took it the track ,with nothing in the bed for weight, would run 15.0 flat spinning the 215-65-15 BF goodrich ta radials, the first 50 ft..
the nice part about these engine they are super cheap and easy to rebuild, you can buy use for 300 or you can just get a short block for 1000 dollar and a long block for 1800 dollars.
And "just" spend 4 days or $4000 to install it.
@@edwardschmitt5710It’s not $4000 to have a motor put in.
@@edwardschmitt57104 days? Who’s installing that engine, Hellen Keller? Takes 4 hours.
Don't mind the paint job but why is everybody ruining these collectable vehicles with black wheels, removed lettering and smoked out taillights and poorly modified engines? Even with those mods I would still put a replacement used engine back in, put the original lettering back on and wheels and enjoy the truck for what it is.
EXACTLY
I had a 2002 like this but 4x4. The ball joints had to be replaced 3 times within 36,000 miles. sold it.
Looks like a great 5.7 or 6.4 swap candidate
Send him an engine, big guy.
@@mikek5298 😂 I need my 5.7. Using it
Attention from 2027 on in California and Florida and New York all gas cars gonna be illegal!
Normally the late 90's model Dakotas are great dependable little trucks.
I've never seen one without problems.
@@jeremyweems4916never had a single problem with mine
I absolutely love this truck car wizard doesn't really know the car world
The truck is gorgeous. Let's acknowledge that. I used to own a 98 but 3.9.
Meh. It’s ok at best but guess what it’s very subjective.
When I was young I would get into some modifications but now that I am old I prefer stock. Aren't collector cars worth more if they are all original?
That depends if the modifications are period correct and are quality parts. In some cases performance aftermarket parts are of better quality than stock.
"Collector car"-buy it "restored" spend 2X what you paid for it to keep it running and to re-"restore" it, then sell it as 100% "restored". Mean time deal with bad bakes, terrible steering, and everything being replaced. Maybe by a third car.....-a tow truck.....
Truck looks beautiful. Its so unfortunate though
CONGRATS WIZARD ON HITTING ONE MILLION SUBSCRIBERS!!!--YOUR VIDEOS ROCK!!!!
If you have any experience with swapping engines, I'd recommend buying these. I've gotten lots and built them the right way. Wouldn't recommend it for normal non car guys but if you've done it a few times these are fun vehicles to buy for cheap
There are a lot of expensive parts on that engine. The intake manifold alone is $1000 and up.
Soon all gas cars are forbidden so this is scrap metal only

Car wizard thank you for your service to our country as a fellow military mechanic I salute you from Canada
Please don't compare Jims and the car wizard.
5:55 the actual problem with the truck your welcome.
Your a good man Wizard. You've earned my respect. 🙂👍
How is it a scam? It's clearly labeled "Dodge".
A good honest mechanic is worth their weight in gold. Very hard to find these days or at all. Thankfully ive found a good one in my home town😊
Looks like Pontiac Verdoro Green.
I looked at a Fox body Mustang that had extensive mods and while it probably was fast, I felt like I would have been buying a hand grenade with the pin pulled.
You missed out
No,no he didn't @@OCtheG
The RT 5.9 with a stick was awesome one my gf dad's had one and it was awesome
Dodge never offered the 5.9 with a manual in the R/T.
They didn't offer a manual trans in the R/T.
The cheap cars get much less cheap after fees and shipping.
that truck is not worth the 8 grand
I remember as a young twenty-something buying an eBay Nissan with a Japanese-swapped engine. Big life-learning experience. Looked great on the outside, but wiring harness mess and transmission issues galore. The seller was a kid (first flag), didn't show up for purchase (2nd flag), father (police officer) had it running when I showed up (3rd flag and maybe 4th flag). Thankfully I fixed most of the issues myself and sold it immediately after as I didn't want to wait to see what else would rear its ugly head. Many stupid mistakes but learned a lot and taught me to wrench😜
5.7 eagle swap
I bought an 03 Buick LeSabre from an 80 year old man, told me it was his wife’s car who passed away. I gave him $2500 for it. I did t think an 80 year old would scam me. Turns out the rear air suspension leaked and is shot, the sunroof leaks when it rains, and there’s oil getting in the coolant which turns it to mud. A mechanic told me not to put another nickel in it, i would have to junk it soon.
If you pay 2500 you did not get scammed, you just made a poor choice
