6:06 Ballistics Calibration has a hidden +60 bonus to accuracy which can be very good for cannon-type artillery.
No it does not. They removed that in a patch.

Buff an artillery piece with Ballistics Calibration, select the artillery and hold alt to bring up the force fire option. A crosshair will appear and around it there'll be a circle indicating the potential area of impact for the shell. Don't move the mouse and let the Ballistics Calibration buff run its course. When it ends the impact circle will widen.

Having 2 canons with Elspeth lets you slow down stuff to a standstill. Incredibly more worth it than having a couple more hellblasters
Plus having 2-4 units of Nuln rifles will clean up anything that gets through those trees and single units. This is a glass cannon build.
Just gotta make sure to upgrade the cannons, I only realised how strong they are when i upgraded them.
I’m starting to get this conspiracy theory that Legend of Total War’s game has dumber AI than my game.
I feel that. When I build super defensive armies the AI rushes me as fast as it possibly can and will break its own neck to try to flank me
When I try to bait the enemy with my Lord they just ignore it and go straight for the ranged units
I never get there's super long battles where the AI kinda derps around and I pick them off little by little like legend does. It's usually they attack as soon as possible and I kill them all immediately or they break through and kill me, either way the battle is over in like 10 mins or less
@@botep5529 do you fight a single army or multiple armies ? Is your army stronger than the base enemy army ? Are you the attacker ? These can influence whether or not the AI rushes
I think it also depends on the battle difficulty you use, since using very hard battle difficulty I have noticed some similarities with how they behave like in Legends videos

I really wish there was a way to ‘blacklist’ certain targets/unit types for artillery. So I don’t get my anti-infantry mortars firing at the large single entity giant.

Yeah it would be awesome to have, it could be a simple check "is the base number of entities for that unit above or below 60" to determine what unit to shoot with what, since I also don't want my mortars to shoot at Vlad or any kind of single entity infantry dude

Ref. Mechanical horses: They are fun, they add to the storyteling and roleplaying elements. Thus I like them.
This was my army. Definitely not optimized and not the best was 100% made it for the spectacle lol. Strangely the AI was a lot more aggressive when I fought it and the hellblasters had no problem killing the reinforcements coming through the trees, might be the penetration passive from the gunner school, idk. But hey when you see 8 stacks of greenskins standing in a pile sometimes you just have to go for it lol

The Amethyst Rocket Batteries do very good in sieges. Their shots arc higher than regular rocket batteries, making them able to hit units close to the walls inside settlements.
I noticed this just yesterday! Their arc is so much more akin to a mortar (not quite as high of an arc but it’s close). Having a Helstorm battery that shoots in a high arc like a crossbow is such a huge bonus to the empire. One of my main gripes with the helstorm is when it just blasts the backside of my frontline
They are by far the best siege units in the game. Poison winds aren't even close.
I think it is also impressive that you get this result on a map that is far from ideal in terms of terrain, so that should also be taken into consideration. This was not the best map for this kind of doomstack, so that increased the amount of micro required to be effective. And I think the main value of the engineers is the re-stocks to keep the ammo high decreasing the time until army losses hit the enemy.
I built similar doomstacks, but you need to put a lightwizard and at least 4 more steam tanks in there for holding them back properly, you dont need this many Helstorm artys

I'm fairly certain having reinforcements hindered the AI in this situation given how many times they tried to regroup when new units came on the battlefield. A simple 20 stack with fast unit would probably be able to defeat this, lightning strike would indeed be good to have to delay the reinforcing armies but not to actually lightning strike the enemy and fight a 20v20.
Also, the terrain/ reinforcement zone dependcy is huge
suppression on the field guns can slow down fast units and take out cav really well
Did something very similar. Dropped 3 helstorms for 2 light wizards and a cannon. The cannons monstrous impacts, managed carefully, was incredibly useful in drawing out the fight. Net of amantok meant single entities just ate it

The Ability + Walking formula has been a brain-rot issue that CA never cares to resolve. I mean, in what situation has ever been a commander issuing an order but said, "Sergeant, go do this! but just walk, take your time."
Rocket Batteries get all the love but Helblasters are a real workhorse unit. You lead a single entity or monstrous cavalry infront of one and it just dies, the dps on them is so high and it scales extremely well with chevrons.
Skavenslaves could obliterate this army if he is caught in an ambush.
I wonder how strong a 20 engineer stack would be. Decent mobility (on non-mechanical steeds) and strong firepower + tons of ammo to share among them.
Cultist of Khorne might have a video about it. They're like premium war wagons stack
You can also get them with the Enemy Leadership reduction perk. It is nowhere near as strong as the beastmen version of the fear doomstack, but it is an extremely powerful army in addition to that, so it can route off the chaff and only focus on killing the big/elite stuff.
I tested it and even with 5 Hochland Scopes. The problem you have.
1: Have a hard time with unit blobs.
2: Can wipe out a friendly engineer in a single volley. Friendly fire is very deadly.
Good sides
1: Can wipe out Kugath Plaguefather with 2 volleys. As in all engineer takes 2 shots at him.
So it does a lot of damage on single target units.
@@Zefar77 "Hochland scopes" trait doesn't benefit engineers at all. It only applies to gunpowder infantry and cavalry, not heroes. Bandoleer is the trait you want for an engineer stack.
Its good, but not amazing. You need at least a wizard so you can deal with blobs. They can kill heroes and single entities really fast and on the barded horse basically there is nothing that can catch them fast enough to really matter.
If it had been me playing, the AI would've bumrushed me instantly instead of regrouping 58 times... :/
Same. If I build super defensive armies the AI builds 6 units of cav or doggos and rushes me as fast as possible
The AI also loves trees and will always find patches to approach through tree acne

I only encountered this "repositioning" bug recently in VH. The Ogre Army started reposition around my outnumbered Cathay boys. Again, and again, until I had battered most of their best units and triggered army loss.
It was really weird, still, pretty appropriate considering how ogres do tactics in lore
7:07 This has been a problem in Total War ever since they switched engines for Empire: Total War. Before that, Guard Mode reliably made archers and artillery stay fucking there.

Hope CA fixes the permanent repositioning of the AI, as legend said, this doomstack only works because the AI doesn't engage.
Light wizards can also give extra speed for reorganizing your artillery

I love the general disdain legend has for mechanical steeds.
After testing for many hours today i found out that the AI breaks faster on higher difficulties while on normal / hard difficulty the AI breaks less since it is not trying to do any fancy maneuvering or targeting they often just charge your frontline .... it still breaks from time to time but not as often as on VH/L difficulty

Personally I think that future total war games need each army to have a "Camp" which if attacked (not even necessarily lost") has very bad consequences on the Campaign map. Retreating units generally move towards the camp and if units are cut off from it you get a morale penalty. (Maybe you can assign a couple of units to the camp to fight off raids)
I think this would get rid of blobbing & corner camping and introduce a lot of the strategy and tactics real generals had to deal with.

Man, I modded the ever-loving life out of TWW2, and I barely got artillery with range over 700. You're telling me that it is just part of Vanilla TWW3 now? XD
Soooo much of my modded game is now just available in the core game. XD
suppression on those field guns will slow enemies down, a cannon or two would do that even more, the engineers I think could stay with the artillery providing the passive accuracy and reload buff unless something came that is a legit threat.

I wonder if the AI tries when it knows it outpowers you to form up and come at you in one wave, then once you start making new unit appear it continues to re form up not realising that being in range of your guns is the problem

When the ai is playing against Legend even the strongest army is to scared to attack and the weakest army knows it's over so they start rushing to be done with it. 😂😂😂😂

I think steam tanks, life and light wizard could drastically improve this army. Now you can have frontline with stam tanks supported by healing.
I have an army with 17 hellstorms with all the gunnery upgrades. Have master engineer lord, steam tank and landship. Why? Because i like to fill the sky with fire and laugh with maniacal glee.
As soon as I saw this army... NO WIZARD?! It's good but yeah must have Light Wizard for this one.

Oi mister Legend, as an artillery addict (I love the smell of hellfire rockets any time of day) I'm quite suprised you didn't use control groups in this battle.
I usually have left, center and right flank battery and it really helps in knowing what group is aming at wich targets and quickly switch to new targets without trying to select them in the mess the backline inadvertently becomes.
That not withstanding, nice battle!

At 9:04 he makes a comment about knowing who the odds are favoring because of the music. What does he mean by that? Does the music change depending on who is favored in the odds ratio?
I my Empire campign i am using a Doomstack made with 4 Rocket Batteries, 14 Ships, 1 Enginner and 1 Master Enginner, with this army i managed to turn into paste all the evil factions. Maybe it could be better to replace one ship with one mage, but generally with this is a far better Doomstack than this, specially if the enemy comes from different directions.
The enemy have artiliry and are shelling us, what do you want to do boss?

In my experience, the AI is significantly dumber when they have reinforcements. It seems like particularly when their primary army is weaker than yours, they will play defensive and wait for reinforcements.. Then get caught in a regroup cycle if you start killing off or routing units. Also if the ai has artillery they seem to try and play more defensive. If they have 1 stack of strong units, no artillery, they will just bum rush you.
The real doomstack was the AI we met along the way

I know machine learning "AI" is controversial, but a really good application in games. E.g. Alpha GO. I'd love to see it applied to total war. I expect it would cost too much money/time investment from CA though. The great thing about this application, is that after certain point, it can train itself.

What do you do about units with stalk?
Fire at the ground and hope for the best or just straight up lose if the AI isn't as dumb as in this battle. Another option would be scouting with heroes.
couple more engineers and all the workshop upgrades/research/Lord Skills and the rocket batteries kill single entities easily too
It's a shame that Hellstorm became the default artillery for the empire rather than the classic grand cannons.

60 speed for itself doesn´t sound as bad as it is...
i had my bullcentaurs with 60 speed chase a unit with 45 speed, took bloody a quarter of the map to catch them
