  • Breitling has reaffirmed its pioneering role in the field of
    technical watches and instruments for professionals by creating
    the very first wristwatch with a built-in personal locator beacon
    (PLB). The Emergency II is a high-tech gem equipped with a dual
    frequency transmitter compliant with the specifications of the
    Cospas-Sarsat international satellite alert system and serving
    both to issue alerts and to guide search and rescue missions.
    Developed in conjunction with major scientific institutes, the
    Emergency II is distinguished by numerous microelectronic and
    microtechnical innovations, including a revolutionary
    rechargeable battery, a miniaturized dual frequency transmitter
    and an unprecedented integrated antenna system -- three
    features specifically developed for this model.
    As the first ever wristworn dual frequency PLB, it establishes
    itself as a safety and survival instrument in all distress
    situations on land, at sea and in the air.

      @@chriscruciat2469 Yeah, except 911 won't work if the watch is broken for instance, or if he's in an area with no cellular service.
      A PLB beacon (like the one in the watch) costs a few hundred pounds (probably same in dollars) and works without any cellular coverage as it uses a satellite.
      In the same way that if you were going on a boating trip around the world, or to a remote desert somewhere, you wouldn't take your cell phone, you'd use a satellite phone, which works provided you have line of sight to the sky.
      When you're injured or stranded somewhere and your life is literally on the line, it's better to have something that is almost certain to work (provided you can see the sky) than something that might or might not work depending on where about you are or crash if on a plane....

      It’s a small team of Breitling AD’s.

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 Год назад +5

      It uses Cospas-Sarsat same as a £300 PLB you can buy.
      Essentially the watch sends a signal to any one of numerous passing SARSAT satellites overhead, if one isn't directly in view or "range" as such of the watch, it transmits until one is overhead and continues to transmit for usually 24 hours.
      The satellite receives the signal, the transmitted data includes GPS position on the newer watches which transmit at 406MHZ as 121.6 MHz is essentially a "Homing beacon" but not very accurate, and only gives rescuers a rough area to search, whereas 406Mhz is far more accurate and GPS is usually to within a few metres, even at it's worst GPS is usually out by no more than 100 metres.
      The satellite forwards the signal back down to the ground to a LUT (Local User Terminal) essentially a small radar type dish with a cabinet next to it, inside the cabinet is a powerful computer that runs 24/7 and processes this signal and interprets the signal and the data from the alert and calculates an approximate location for the beacon that has been activated with the distress signal, if the beacon has GPS it's very accurate, but even modern MEOLUT (using MEO satellites instead of the older GEO and LEO satellites) can calculate a very accurate location of the watch/beacon in distress mode WITHOUT GPS.
      The LUT then transmits all of the data including the location of the distress beacon (watch in this case) to a MCC, or Mission Control Centre, there are 29 of them in the world. The MCC then forwards the alert to a RCC, Rescue Coordination Centre, there are usually several of these in each country, spread across the country.
      The RCC then contacts the nearest SAR (Search and Rescue) team to the location of the distress beacon and the rescue is arranged.
      Typically it can take a good number of hours, the first ever rescue in Sept 1982 took just under 16 hours from time of beacon activation until rescue. However this was a long time ago and using older slower technology. This rescue also took place whilst the system was in it's "Trial" period and the system had not officially gone live, which was a very good test and proved that it works, and saved the lives of 3 people who crashed in a remote area of the Canadian Rockies.
      The three people involved in this incident were in a plane crash in the mountain ranges of British Columbia, their distress signal was picked up by a passing SARSAT satellite some hours after they activated their emergency beacon, the information was forwarded to a LUT in Ontario some near 3,000 miles away. They forwarded this onto MCC and onto RCC who arranged search and rescue.
      The idea is that it's not a "Quick and immediate" rescue, at minimum it will likely be at least a few hours, and at longest perhaps 24-36 hours, but the idea that it essentially guarantees people are aware of your presence and that you need assistance, without one a lot of people would have no other option and would have died.

    • @toniETH
      @toniETH 4 года назад +1

      The Emergency is equipped with a microtransmitter alternately operating on two separate frequencies. It transmits a first digital signal on the 406 MHz frequency intended for satellites and lasting 0.44 seconds every 50 seconds; as well as a second analog signal on the 121.5 MHz homing and rescue frequency, lasting 0.75 seconds every 2.25 seconds.

  • @Kit_Bear
    @Kit_Bear 2 месяца назад

    What needs to be said that wasn't addressed here is that this should only ever be activated as a last resort means of communication after all other methods have failed ie: radio or phone and only to be used in an emergency where lives are at risk without external intervention.
    This is not a toy or sales gimmick. This is a tool to save lives.

    given how bulky standard (trusted) tech that does this is ..i'b be worried for 'what' situations this watch would fail to function as intended (so many things kill the effective distance of slimmed down tech devices like this ..not to mention damage).
    Secondly, the search+rescue crews shown in this video are by FAR the fastest I've ever seen! It's almost like they prearranged the accidents ..then simply flew round the corner and saved the day ;)
