When I think Volvo, I think safety... I'll bet the seats in this old Volvo will pass the new rear collision requirements that are coming out. NHTSA has known about this since the Pinto rear collision tests. I thought new requirements would never come out.
Most Volvo owners I've met over the years are extremely brand loyal. My wife and I have driven them for over 30 years now. The wreck she was involved in that totaled 3 cars on highway 41 when t-boned in her 240 made her a lifelong customer.
I’m 23 years old and I’m on my 3rd t5 Volvo. Got hooked on them after my first 2005 Volvo S40 T5 Manual 6 speed. Fell in love and now I have 2 S60s both with the T5. My newest addition is my 14 S60🙏🏻 my point here is I will always at least have one Volvo in my driveway!
Please what? The best and most reliable european car brand of all time is without any doubt Mercedes-Benz. Especially the cars between the 70s and the 2000s. Volvo is a great brand with a good quality, comfort and much safety, but it is no comparison to a Mercedes. Sorry!
@@m.b.6744 Eh? There is a reason most of the mercedes made during this period is on the scrapyard while thousands of old Volvos are still driving, Mercedes tend to rust..badly. As for reliability I don't think there is any more reliable engines than the old Volvo i6 and i5, I saw a video of some guy driving around in a i5 without any oil in it and it just kept on going. They wanted to kill it so eventually they put gravel in the cylinders and it ran for some time before giving up. Even if the mercedes engines managed to be as reliable as Volvo it doesn't matter if all the car around the engine has rusted apart.
I’m looking at a 2003 S40 with 50k miles. I take very good of my cars, do you have any thoughts on it before I buy it ? I never owned a Volvo. But just as other European cars, they have expensive parts & im fine with that. please get back to me. I heard the 2003 S40 had troubles with the front brake pads
@@davidsoto7114 yeah no issues. Yeah on the internet you can find common issues with s40s volvo. Other than parts being expensive. I'd say that car is a steal, definitely should get it. Like i said i take care of my car and it still runs smooth. Have had no issues with the brakes either.
After 9 Volvos I’m on a 2004 V70 and I absolutely love it. My grandad, dad and uncle all had Volvos so it runs in the family. All have been faultless in the main with usual service items etc. I won’t drive any other brand and as a Vehicle Damage Engineer and dealing with crashed cars daily, Volvos are without doubt the toughest and makes me glad to drive one!

I just sold my 2002 Volvo S80 with 312,000 miles on it. Still ran and drove PERFECTLY, and didn’t leak at all. Just wanted something new. But man, Volvos are amazing cars if you take care of them.

I owned a 2007 XC90 with the Yamaha V8 - extraordinary vehicle/I sold it last March with 237,000 miles. I own a 2013 Volvo C70 w/ the polestar software right now - great car. My Mom has a 2018 XC60 Inscription, sister owns a 2005 XC70, and my Dad has a 2016 V60 CrossCountry. We are indeed a Volvo family, and we would not want it any other way!
Volvo is a car like other cars you need to take car of them than you didn’t need to fix enythis , my 2003 volvo s80 has 278.000miles its still powerfull and drive perfect you just need to change oil and filters and let them drive

I bought a volvo p2 S60 2.5T 3 years ago for $950 and I did some basic maintenance like brakes, shocks, fluids and timing belt. The car was 170k miles and today is 210k miles and the only thing I have done is oil change! 0 problems
As a 2012 C70 owner i couldn't agree more, Scotty. The biggest threat to the engine is a lack of coolant - this is why one should change out their coolant reservoir every three years. Like you said, a very solid and well-built car - that's why most of my grandkids are putting dibs on it......
You need to be careful of the T-Shaped coolant pipe that runs from the bottom right of the radiator and goes over the top of the gearbox. It's a 'Gates' branded hose (Ford) and the plastic "T" connector of the hose cracks and dumps your coolant on the floor. Unfortunately Ford cheapened a lot of these Volvos down during their ownership. So just be wary of that pipe... If you're loosing coolant on this 2.5T engine, and you've already replaced the (Ford) coolant resevoir, then you need to get that lower hose replaced.
Volvo for life. I own a very rare 2016 V60 Polestar and its a beast. Volvo knows how to build very solid and reliable cars. Sure parts and maintance can be expensive, but these things will last forever. Mine has the T6 inline 6 turbo motor and its the smoothest motor Volvo ever built
Love my v60. I've had it for 8 years and it has needed one major repair on the computer. Other than that, it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. It still looks beautiful and drives smooth with no rattles. Amazing. My husband just drove it to Florida for a golf tournament and it was getting 36-37 mpg. It is super fun to drive and a sleeper with its acceleration speed. Love it. My VWs were SO much more expensive to repair. I want another one, but they're expensive 😫
He is definitely right about Volvo’s not rusting, I used to have a 2004 Volvo S60 lived up in the northeast it’s whole life had like 165k miles on it not a spec of rust on it very solid cars.

I’m 18. Bought my first car for $8400. A 2008 Volvo S80 only 89k miles at the time. Yesterday actually, I got in a bad car accident. I was rear-ended by an illegal. The car is most like totaled. I am so proud of the car, and how safe it was, and the how damage would of been much worse if I was driving a Honda Civic for example. I currently have my eyes on a 2007 Volvo S80 executive, with 155k. I don’t mind it as long as I can verify the cars maintenance history.. I was able to find the car has been serviced almost it’s entire life at a Volvo dealership. Waiting for the insurance to decide what they’re gonna do..
@ExpertGaming100 Dang dude. I got my 2007 S80 with 72k miles on for $5600. Back in 2021. Solid car. Great looking in and out, great sound system. At 106k miles going strong. It's my spare car. If I were you I wouldn't pay no more than 7k for that one that you've got your eyes on. But that's just me

Driven volvo since the day i passed my test. Had 3. All did over 200k easy. No crazy expense, no testing issues more than a few bucks here and there. Never let me down. Xc90 has a few issues now at 200k. Mainly due to constant rainy irish weather. Still tight as a drum. I hear the new batches are a different story unfortunately.
Well the XC90 whether first or second generation has always been as unreliable as it gets. The Volvo XC90 has by far the worst results in the survey. Nearly half ( 45.9 percent ) of the new cars have had major faults, and as many as 99 out of a hundred have had minor faults. Of the top 10 car models who have suffered major errors which led to emergency workshop visits. Volvo represented 40% of the list. Claiming both the first and second place as the worst cars.
Maybe in the newer models . I hear the Chinese got involved . The Volvo XC 90 to 2014 decent car . Especially the little know marriage between Japaneses engineering 4.4 V8 & Aisin transmission . A little thirsty but beautiful DNA match .
Scotty you mentioned the P1800 Volvo…when i was growing up, one of my best friend’s grandfather had a neon orange hatchback version. it was a beautiful car and was his daily driver for 30 years with zero issues. he had a very quirky taste in cars…it shared the garage with a Porsche 914!

I have a 2008 Volvo V50 T5 which is the wagon version of this car. It was assembled in Belgium & it's based on the same platform as the European version of Ford Focus & Mazda 3. I love this car. Turbo engine has a very wide power band- it pulls strong from low rpm to red line. I Took delivery in Sweden & drove it around Europe for 6 weeks. Volvo then shipped to California where I live.
I really enjoy your videos. I'm the owner of a 2013 Volvo C70, after a month of ownership I got the Polestar optimization. Only 23hp more but; the added torque is what makes so much better performing car. Sometimes, unintentionally it will spin the tires. I always liked Volvo and when I heard they were going to stop making them, I bought one. Such a joy to drive! The Volvo seats are they best in the industry. Mine only has 31,000 miles on it and never given me a problem. Last year, I bought a 2021 Volvo XC60, great SUV.
Recently purchased my first car and got a 2015 Volvo S60 t5 premier and I love it! Got it at 68k miles and hoping it lasts at least another 100,000!! Love Volvos

Just bought a 2009 S80 T6 AWD with 62,000mi and 2 owners. Every service done at Boston Village Volvo. So far I am loving it! Fast, very comfortable, and solid. My dad has a 05 XC70 with over 150,000 on it and still runs like new! Love Volvo's!
Proud owner of 1992 Volvo 940T, 1993 Volvo 240 and 1998 Volvo V70. All daily drivers in my family. All paid for, all with no book value, all cheap to insure...all easy to repair. No engine, transmission or differential work ever done. Just basic stuff... 940,200 miles between them.
I have the S60 version of this car and it's an amazing car. Same engine, just 4 door and not a convertible. I did the timing belt myself and replaced the water pump and tension pulley and idle pulley at the same time. Even took off the alternator and replaced the bearings in it's pulley and removed the shims in the AC compressor clutch at the same time because the clutch wears and it will be slipping by 100,000 miles. You can get them cheap because nobody wants to do that job but the dealer and the dealer wants a couple grand to do it. So people sell them before the timing belt blows and destroys the engine. A 40 grand car you can pick up for 10. And Volvo doesn't change body designs that often.
Happy XC70 owner with more than 340,000 km on the clock. Though I also have a 2022 MB GLE580, I get way more compliments from the XC70 because every passenger on board is usually very suprised how comfortable it is and the fact that with 340,000 kms it still drives like new.
I own a 2010 Volvo s40 which is a 2.4L 5 cylinder and it’s a wonderful vehicle, and I live in Wisconsin where there’s lots of snow and salt on the roads most of the year and it’s solid underneath not any rust on the frame

Scotty you are wrong about the P1800 and Pininfarina. P1800 was 100% Volvo design and construction, however Volvo had a design contest and the winner was Fura in Italy. Later it was revealed that the P1800 designer was Pelle Petterson, the son of Helmer Petterson that was the project manager at Volvo! So Pelle had attended under covered in the contest. At the start of production 1961 the P1800 was built by Jensen Motors in England but the quality was so poor that Volvo decided to move the production to Sweden 1963. The Swedish built cars got a new 1800S label, the Jensen built had the P1800 designation.
I like this guy. I bought a 1 y/o used Volvo S60 Inscription 4 years ago. The inscription is a stretch S-60 which is great for chauffering my little son in the back seat. "Ghosts codes" For the past 2 or 3 years I've been getting a low battery warning. But the car always starts.
P1800 has to be one of the best looking cars made, that welding tip at the end really works an old mechanic friend of mine always got cars sent to him to get the stud off and even locking nuts he got them off the same way proper weld proper nut bingo success
Great video, I have one of these same colour, looks gorgeous and a headturner, very rare on our British roads, as a consequence it makes you feel special, I've had mine 10 months now and I have seen no more than half a dozen C70s, this Celestial Blue looks amazing on this design, red is another great colour for this car, and as you say Scotty, it drives and rides brilliantly, so smooth, just glides down the highway ! It drives just like a normal car and warm in winter, no cold drafts associated with soft tops here, most of the time I am totally unaware I'm driving a convertible because of the hard top, just push the button and down it goes, and looks amazing in the process, in fact it looks great with the roof up or down, which is not something can be said for most convertibles !
I have a 15 year old Volvo xc90 which spent it's whole life in the snow belt in Canada so heavy salt and not a Knick of rust even underneath. And I looked at about 10 different ones and none had rust, a few had minor surface rust underneath. I don't know what the Swedes do, but I also looked at Ford, Jeep, Acura, and Toyota and all of those has rust issues
Rust is the oxdidizing process. Aluminum also reacts with oxygen, but the top oxidized later protects the rest of the metal. I am not sure what you mean by corrosion. Corrosion happens with Iron which basically rusts!
I just bought a 2015 V60 Premiere T-5 Wagon with only 75K miles & 1 owner who kept it garaged in Florida for 9 years. Only $16,000, in PERFECT condition. I've had some nice cars, all domestic, but this is so far above them in every way. A real pleasure to drive, it feels like an extension of myself. I in no way got this Volvo as a status symbol. I wanted a well-built and very safe car, yet the "understated Swedish refinement" is apparent in every detail.❤
My wife and I both love our Volvo (XC40 & XC90). I bought her a 2011 XC 60 in late 2010 when I was stationed in Germany and it had zero to no issues until she took out a full size deer a couple of years ago. I was still able to drive them mid size tank (lol) away from the accident site, but the insurance company total it instead of making the necessary repairs.
I bought a 2001 s60 a couple years ago from my elderly neighbor to use as a commuter. Thing was immaculate and he had a 3 inch stack of maintenance receipts. I drove for about a year until the transmission crapped out at 320k miles
In the past 50 years we had a 144, 244, 2x740, 940, 850, and 2xS80. All of them more than 200K miles when we traded them in. In between some others (Opel, 2xBMW525, Jaguar XJ, Rover 827, Mercedes E) but always coming back to the Volvo’s. Now we drive a Jaguar S and really enjoy it, but my wife wants to go back to Volvo again after this.
My best mate is a sales manager here in the U.K. for Volvo they’re excellent cars the only issue they have is premature ECU failure it’s very common and it’s expensive to fix
Scotty I got me a 2010 Volvo S40 R Desigh with 74k miles and I am really happy with it has the same 2.5 cylinder turbo engine that this cars has and so far I have really enjoyed it definitely recommend Volvos they are good cars and safe too
@@gardenst4398 Brand image (and the related sales) can count for a lot, even if something is decent quality. If a brand's image isn't up to scratch, the company will fold even if they make decent products. It's not always a rational thing, which companies fail or succeed, or need buying out to save them.
Im a happy owner of a 2012 Volvo s60 t6 awd. Found this baby with 49k miles. Paid cash for this mint. Gonna get the Polestar software update this coming spring and gonna enjoy her till I can't no more.
Good engines but they can use a lot of oil. check every week. Even if the engine is 2 litres (quarts) below minimum oil level the car does not give a warning. Apparently it has an oil pressure sensor, not a "low oil level" alarm, but it's very late to give a warning. As it is a turbo engine change oil more often than Volvo recommends.
I'm usually a wagon guy, my 850R Wagon was one of my favorite pickups. I wanted a V70R, but they're basically Unicorns, especially the spaceball manuals, so I jumped on a S60R I found that was manual. I'm not a "manual or nothing" type guy, but that was the closest I'll get to my dream car for a while with the way prices are going and what I'm willing to pay. Not that I'm complaining, the S60R is great; no one suspects it to have the power and grip it has.
Have just got hold of a 2007 S60R with 109k miles. Doing routine the upkeep you need for an older car. It costs money, much money, but it is a nice old car, and quite fast.
Couldn't agree more. Drove 4 Volvos (245, 745, 945, S60R), 1 Mercedes (124) and a Saab 93 convertible. Once I got another car than a Volvo I switched back to it after some time :) Gotta love the moose!
Well, i've owned 23 Saabs and 18 Volvo's They are both good on their unique way. My 2014 Volvo V70 is cheaper to run than My neigbours 2018 Tesla... It costs less to drive with diesel Volvo than charging stupid EV here in northern europe...
I've got a Volvo v50 which I purchased 6 years ago on 2010 plate. I only drive 20 mile a day and I've never had a problem.Trouble free driving.fantastic car.
Glad i watched this. I have a 05 XC90 with the 2.5 turbo 5 cylinder engine. Its got 175,000 on it, has a new timing belt, I had to replace the fuel pump which i did myself, and it has cooling system issues right now, seems the thermostats stuck open so it gets too cool so I've had to put cardboard in front of the radiator on colder days so it doesn't get below operating temp, and it also has a leak in the radiator and the bars didn't resolve it unfortunately so need to replace that. I change the oil about every 2500 miles, use Castrol fully synthetic since that's what the manual recommends, and it seems to have incredible power still. I climb up the biggest mountain in these parts taching about 2.4 doing nearly 70. It just opens up once you get over 35 or 40,. I really like the car, would like to keep it running for a long time. Mine was made in Sweeden btw and I guess somehow got over here.
Thought the C70 has a Volvo engine, the car itself is based on the Ford Focus CC and most components have FoMoCo stamped on them. Electronic failures in the computer memory can occur if you start the engine when the battery voltage is too low.
Scotty, I have a 2004 Volvo S80 T5 AWD. I bought it new back in 2004. It has 113,000 miles. A few months ago it started shaking at start up when it the car was idling at 1000 and below RPM. When underway the vibration stopped. I have spend a lot of money to "fix" problem: 1. Replaced motor mounts 2. Replaced spark plugs 3. Replaced front struts 4. Replaced timing belt and tensioners 5. Replaced VVE in and out 6. Replace rear muffler Even after doing all these repairs the shaking at startup continues. wondering if you have any ideas what is wrong. I love Volvo's. I have a 1996 850 Turbo Station Wagon with 370000 miles. I bought the thing 6 months ago for $1500 with all the maintenance up to date and well documented. It has the original engine and automatic transmission which still shifts very smooth. Everything but the AC works and the only thing I had to replace was an alternator when the original one finally died on me. I daily drive the thing 150 miles round trip to college 5 days a week.
09’ s80 T6. My thang is a GOER!!! Change the oil every 3 months, regardless of mileage. Owned for a year now, from 121,005 in Feb. 2021 now at 144,576 as of February 2022. I love it!!! Next one for my family of 5 is an 06’ navigator, Yes sir’
I work at a garage that deals mostly with Euro cars, specifically BMW, Audi, and Mercedes.. I would never buy one but I will admit the old Volvo's with the 2.5 turbo's ran forever.
I love how luxurious volvos are, the have super high quality materials and great design, they have almost all the same features you'd get in a bmw or a mercedes without costing an arm and a leg and not super in your face

@@johncampolo2177 I had one...it was terrible. The convertible top was opened by around 6 pumps. If I tried to put my top down all the pumps would leak out all the oil in seconds, leaving the car sitting on a pile of oil....😂 Sure the car looked nice and had a very strong ending and trans., but do you really have to have an air pump system just to lock your doors...
@@johncampolo2177 the problem with Mercedes is when you have to replace those motors or actuators, which you will, you have to donate your savings, a testicle and your first born to have them replaced. And that's after you make an appt. with the Mercedes auto boutique and wait..
My mom has the same car, except it's the 2.0 turbo diesel engine and it goes strong at almost 200 000km (120 000 miles). Does +40 us mpg all day. Of course it's not as strong as my NA 740 but still pretty robust.
my girl has an '04' s-60. michigan car. zero rust anywhere. looks like it just drove out the showroom. recent airbag recall. but a great car all in all.
A year ago I bought a 2013 Volvo C70 with 60,000 miles. It's a really nice car. I wanted a hardtop convertible for exactly the reasons you said not to get a rag top. Truly, this car, with the top up? You'd never know it is convertible underneath. I am considering getting one of these SmartTOP modules that plug into the wiring and provide key-fob up/down control of the top and a few other features. Thanks for another great video!
Only thing I don't like about these engines is the pcv box...they're a hassle to replace. Every used Volvo I've bought needed a pcv replacement...other then that I love these cars!
I'm wondering how Volvo has avoided the pitfalls that plague other European cars. Mercedes and BMW both make great engines says Scotty, but they suffer from other problems such as over engineering, etc. How is Volvo better than the rest of the continent?
I’m from Sweden and I don’t have a certain answer but what’s sure is that the Swedish climate provides a good testing ground for vehicles. In the southern parts you have more moist and corroding climate, In the north you have the same climate as in Canada, Alaska, Siberia and we would not buy a car that couldn’t handle the harsh winters. If Volvo didn’t man up we would buy other brands. Also Volvo was involved in producing military vehicles during the cold wars and they had even more demands than a normal family. The engines are extremely durable. One other pretty modern engine is the diesel D5 that easily runs 1 million kilometers with oilchange and perhaps new diesel injectors, the gearbox will give up though. The gasoline and diesel versions of the engine can be found in boats as well, the famous Volvo Penta engine. Volvo also makes heavy duty vehicles like trucks (Mercedes also does that and have the Unimog and some other legendary heavy duty trucks) and I’m sure that technology and experience within an organization will be shared.
@@robertraman6307 The new Volvo's look very good but they are not as reliable anymore like the good old V70. Since the Chinese took over technology and looks went up but reliablity got backwards.
I own a V40 T4 made in 2013. Never had a mechanical issue. My mechanic says it's still like brand new. The only thing i do is to change the engine oil and consumables and i have 189k miles. So yeah.. they know how to build an engine. 🤞
My shop services Mazda, Honda, Toyota and Volvo ... and they did so for decades. For the past 15+ years they have recommended their Volvo customers switch to one of the Japanese brands. And these people have seen at least hundreds of Volvos before coming to that conclusion.
Getting the stick version is quite worth it 👌 Edit: a year later, I've got a 5-speed 2.4i sedan and a T5 turbo automatic hatchback. Ofc we did the timing belt in both. These cars are DOPE. They have their drawbacks (road noise, stiff sporty suspension) but they CERTAINLY have their advantages (great handling, tons of torque, and the turbo is legit FAST), too. Cost of ownership is mid -- repairs are pricey because parts aren't cheap. Mechanically, they are sound as a top. If you want a sporty, torquey, understated and safe vehicle to Eff around with--get a Volvo inline-5.
I gave my Mrs my 2018 XC90 r design and purchased myself a Mercedes’ GLE. Massive mistake, GLE going and going to have 2 XC90’s. Currently in the French Alps, never misses a beat, 50k miles in 18 months.
I DO wish that hard-top convertibles were more common. I almost purchased a convertible soft-top Dodge Dakota (yes, pickup). It was a dealer option (but this was on the Lot). The factory shipped them to a conversion place.
The old Volvo estate were very popular on the continent.Most of them were driven on L.P.G gas.The engines had no problem with the extra heat from the gas.The valves on the Volvo were top quality.
My friend, here in Peru I am thinking about changing my s60 5 cylinder into LPG but I'm afraid if this damage the engine or valves. Also we have natural gas which is even hotter. Can you give me your opinion about this?
Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, Hyundai, Nissan, pretty much all Asian cars rust like crazy here in eastern Canada, Volvos and Mercedes-Benz(some BMW's) are whey more solidly built.
I am owner of a C70 Mk2 2008 with diesel 5 cylinder engine. Nearly 300K km and still running good and smooth. I have opened and closed the roof like 10.000 times (exaggerated) and never was broken :D I love it so much :)

No big news but couple days ago my 05 Mitsubishi with a manual tranny reached 200k miles, just been doing basic maintenance, man it’s just runs and runs
these 5 cylinder engines they produced since 1994 have got to be one of the most bulletproof engines ever. I have a c30 t5 has 220k miles on the stock engine and turbo with no signs of giving up. My transmission has just started to slip but hey its the stock trans as well. I bought it with 130k besides normal service all ive done is change timing belt twice and motor mounts.
I have owned so many vehicles but I recently got a 2004 xc70 man I just can’t wait to head outside so that I can drive it again I absolutely love this car and the way it drives and handles my second vehicle will also be a Volvo maybe an xc90 or an s80 now I’m a loyal customer for life!

When I think Volvo, I think safety... I'll bet the seats in this old Volvo will pass the new rear collision requirements that are coming out. NHTSA has known about this since the Pinto rear collision tests. I thought new requirements would never come out.

Most Volvo owners I've met over the years are extremely brand loyal. My wife and I have driven them for over 30 years now. The wreck she was involved in that totaled 3 cars on highway 41 when t-boned in her 240 made her a lifelong customer.

As for reliability I don't think there is any more reliable engines than the old Volvo i6 and i5, I saw a video of some guy driving around in a i5 without any oil in it and it just kept on going. They wanted to kill it so eventually they put gravel in the cylinders and it ran for some time before giving up. Even if the mercedes engines managed to be as reliable as Volvo it doesn't matter if all the car around the engine has rusted apart.
Volvos are really popular in the northeast region of the US. I visit New England and Upstate NY often, and there are tons of them!

After 9 Volvos I’m on a 2004 V70 and I absolutely love it. My grandad, dad and uncle all had Volvos so it runs in the family. All have been faultless in the main with usual service items etc. I won’t drive any other brand and as a Vehicle Damage Engineer and dealing with crashed cars daily, Volvos are without doubt the toughest and makes me glad to drive one!

I just sold my 2002 Volvo S80 with 312,000 miles on it. Still ran and drove PERFECTLY, and didn’t leak at all. Just wanted something new. But man, Volvos are amazing cars if you take care of them.

I owned a 2007 XC90 with the Yamaha V8 - extraordinary vehicle/I sold it last March with 237,000 miles. I own a 2013 Volvo C70 w/ the polestar software right now - great car. My Mom has a 2018 XC60 Inscription, sister owns a 2005 XC70, and my Dad has a 2016 V60 CrossCountry. We are indeed a Volvo family, and we would not want it any other way!
My family has never owned a Volvo that didn't make it well over 200,000 miles, you just need to do most of the fixing/work yourself! Solid cars.

I bought a volvo p2 S60 2.5T 3 years ago for $950 and I did some basic maintenance like brakes, shocks, fluids and timing belt. The car was 170k miles and today is 210k miles and the only thing I have done is oil change! 0 problems

As a 2012 C70 owner i couldn't agree more, Scotty. The biggest threat to the engine is a lack of coolant - this is why one should change out their coolant reservoir every three years. Like you said, a very solid and well-built car - that's why most of my grandkids are putting dibs on it......
You need to be careful of the T-Shaped coolant pipe that runs from the bottom right of the radiator and goes over the top of the gearbox. It's a 'Gates' branded hose (Ford) and the plastic "T" connector of the hose cracks and dumps your coolant on the floor. Unfortunately Ford cheapened a lot of these Volvos down during their ownership. So just be wary of that pipe... If you're loosing coolant on this 2.5T engine, and you've already replaced the (Ford) coolant resevoir, then you need to get that lower hose replaced.

TOO Much Volvo expensive maintenance. Electric is way simpler.

Volvo for life. I own a very rare 2016 V60 Polestar and its a beast. Volvo knows how to build very solid and reliable cars. Sure parts and maintance can be expensive, but these things will last forever. Mine has the T6 inline 6 turbo motor and its the smoothest motor Volvo ever built
V60 owner here as well but mine is the T4f, the V60 is both a good looking and nice car to drive!
In line 6s are always smooth, they are naturally balanced.
Love my v60. I've had it for 8 years and it has needed one major repair on the computer. Other than that, it's been the most reliable car I've ever owned. It still looks beautiful and drives smooth with no rattles. Amazing. My husband just drove it to Florida for a golf tournament and it was getting 36-37 mpg. It is super fun to drive and a sleeper with its acceleration speed. Love it. My VWs were SO much more expensive to repair. I want another one, but they're expensive 😫
He is definitely right about Volvo’s not rusting, I used to have a 2004 Volvo S60 lived up in the northeast it’s whole life had like 165k miles on it not a spec of rust on it very solid cars.

I’m 18. Bought my first car for $8400. A 2008 Volvo S80 only 89k miles at the time. Yesterday actually, I got in a bad car accident. I was rear-ended by an illegal. The car is most like totaled. I am so proud of the car, and how safe it was, and the how damage would of been much worse if I was driving a Honda Civic for example. I currently have my eyes on a 2007 Volvo S80 executive, with 155k. I don’t mind it as long as I can verify the cars maintenance history.. I was able to find the car has been serviced almost it’s entire life at a Volvo dealership. Waiting for the insurance to decide what they’re gonna do..
@ExpertGaming100 Dang dude. I got my 2007 S80 with 72k miles on for $5600. Back in 2021. Solid car. Great looking in and out, great sound system. At 106k miles going strong. It's my spare car. If I were you I wouldn't pay no more than 7k for that one that you've got your eyes on. But that's just me

I've owned a 2011 S40 T5 for 8 years now. 160,000km on the clock and never once given any issues. Still looks and drives like new.
I love Volvo. I have 2 at the moment. S80 and XC70. Grew up driving 240's in high school.
Driven volvo since the day i passed my test. Had 3. All did over 200k easy. No crazy expense, no testing issues more than a few bucks here and there. Never let me down. Xc90 has a few issues now at 200k. Mainly due to constant rainy irish weather. Still tight as a drum. I hear the new batches are a different story unfortunately.
Well the XC90 whether first or second generation has always been as unreliable as it gets.
The Volvo XC90 has by far the worst results in the survey. Nearly half ( 45.9 percent ) of the new cars have had major faults, and as many as 99 out of a hundred have had minor faults.
Of the top 10 car models who have suffered major errors which led to emergency workshop visits. Volvo represented 40% of the list. Claiming both the first and second place as the worst cars.
Maybe in the newer models . I hear the Chinese got involved . The Volvo XC 90 to 2014 decent car . Especially the little know marriage between Japaneses engineering 4.4 V8 & Aisin transmission . A little thirsty but beautiful DNA match .

Scotty you mentioned the P1800 Volvo…when i was growing up, one of my best friend’s grandfather had a neon orange hatchback version. it was a beautiful car and was his daily driver for 30 years with zero issues. he had a very quirky taste in cars…it shared the garage with a Porsche 914!
Look up Irv Gordan and his P1800 Volvo. His Volvo went over 3,000,000 miles. It’s a great read. Irv loved to drive.

I have a 2008 Volvo V50 T5 which is the wagon version of this car. It was assembled in Belgium & it's based on the same platform as the European version of Ford Focus & Mazda 3. I love this car. Turbo engine has a very wide power band- it pulls strong from low rpm to red line. I Took delivery in Sweden & drove it around Europe for 6 weeks. Volvo then shipped to California where I live.

Pretty sure the V70 is the estate/wagon version of this car (which is a C70), not the V50. There wasn't an equivalent convertible of the V50.

I'm the owner of a 2013 Volvo C70, after a month of ownership I got the Polestar optimization. Only 23hp more but; the added torque is what makes so much better performing car. Sometimes, unintentionally it will spin the tires.
I always liked Volvo and when I heard they were going to stop making them, I bought one. Such a joy to drive! The Volvo seats are they best in the industry.
Mine only has 31,000 miles on it and never given me a problem.
Last year, I bought a 2021 Volvo XC60, great SUV.
My wife wants an XC 60 but she didn't like the way it felt but she really likes the looks of it.
The seats are the best in the industry. Recently, I took a look at some other manufacturers SUVs and the seats were worse than in previous years.

Just bought a 2009 S80 T6 AWD with 62,000mi and 2 owners. Every service done at Boston Village Volvo. So far I am loving it! Fast, very comfortable, and solid. My dad has a 05 XC70 with over 150,000 on it and still runs like new! Love Volvo's!
Proud owner of 1992 Volvo 940T, 1993 Volvo 240 and 1998 Volvo V70. All daily drivers in my family. All paid for, all with no book value, all cheap to insure...all easy to repair. No engine, transmission or differential work ever done. Just basic stuff... 940,200 miles between them.
I have the S60 version of this car and it's an amazing car. Same engine, just 4 door and not a convertible. I did the timing belt myself and replaced the water pump and tension pulley and idle pulley at the same time. Even took off the alternator and replaced the bearings in it's pulley and removed the shims in the AC compressor clutch at the same time because the clutch wears and it will be slipping by 100,000 miles. You can get them cheap because nobody wants to do that job but the dealer and the dealer wants a couple grand to do it. So people sell them before the timing belt blows and destroys the engine. A 40 grand car you can pick up for 10. And Volvo doesn't change body designs that often.

Happy XC70 owner with more than 340,000 km on the clock. Though I also have a 2022 MB GLE580, I get way more compliments from the XC70 because every passenger on board is usually very suprised how comfortable it is and the fact that with 340,000 kms it still drives like new.
I own a 2010 Volvo s40 which is a 2.4L 5 cylinder and it’s a wonderful vehicle, and I live in Wisconsin where there’s lots of snow and salt on the roads most of the year and it’s solid underneath not any rust on the frame

The non turbo Volvos are tough as nails. I've owned two of them and they were great. Not very fast, but they're damn reliable.
Scotty you are wrong about the P1800 and Pininfarina. P1800 was 100% Volvo design and construction, however Volvo had a design contest and the winner was Fura in Italy. Later it was revealed that the P1800 designer was Pelle Petterson, the son of Helmer Petterson that was the project manager at Volvo! So Pelle had attended under covered in the contest. At the start of production 1961 the P1800 was built by Jensen Motors in England but the quality was so poor that Volvo decided to move the production to Sweden 1963. The Swedish built cars got a new 1800S label, the Jensen built had the P1800 designation.
I like this guy. I bought a 1 y/o used Volvo S60 Inscription 4 years ago. The inscription is a stretch S-60 which is great for chauffering my little son in the back seat. "Ghosts codes" For the past 2 or 3 years I've been getting a low battery warning. But the car always starts.
P1800 has to be one of the best looking cars made, that welding tip at the end really works an old mechanic friend of mine always got cars sent to him to get the stud off and even locking nuts he got them off the same way proper weld proper nut bingo success
Great video, I have one of these same colour, looks gorgeous and a headturner, very rare on our British roads, as a consequence it makes you feel special, I've had mine 10 months now and I have seen no more than half a dozen C70s, this Celestial Blue looks amazing on this design, red is another great colour for this car, and as you say Scotty, it drives and rides brilliantly, so smooth, just glides down the highway !
It drives just like a normal car and warm in winter, no cold drafts associated with soft tops here, most of the time I am totally unaware I'm driving a convertible because of the hard top, just push the button and down it goes, and looks amazing in the process, in fact it looks great with the roof up or down, which is not something can be said for most convertibles !

I have a 15 year old Volvo xc90 which spent it's whole life in the snow belt in Canada so heavy salt and not a Knick of rust even underneath. And I looked at about 10 different ones and none had rust, a few had minor surface rust underneath. I don't know what the Swedes do, but I also looked at Ford, Jeep, Acura, and Toyota and all of those has rust issues
Rust is the oxdidizing process. Aluminum also reacts with oxygen, but the top oxidized later protects the rest of the metal. I am not sure what you mean by corrosion. Corrosion happens with Iron which basically rusts!
I just bought a 2015 V60 Premiere T-5 Wagon with only 75K miles & 1 owner who kept it garaged in Florida for 9 years. Only $16,000, in PERFECT condition. I've had some nice cars, all domestic, but this is so far above them in every way. A real pleasure to drive, it feels like an extension of myself. I in no way got this Volvo as a status symbol. I wanted a well-built and very safe car, yet the "understated Swedish refinement" is apparent in every detail.❤
My wife and I both love our Volvo (XC40 & XC90). I bought her a 2011 XC 60 in late 2010 when I was stationed in Germany and it had zero to no issues until she took out a full size deer a couple of years ago. I was still able to drive them mid size tank (lol) away from the accident site, but the insurance company total it instead of making the necessary repairs.
I bought a 2001 s60 a couple years ago from my elderly neighbor to use as a commuter. Thing was immaculate and he had a 3 inch stack of maintenance receipts. I drove for about a year until the transmission crapped out at 320k miles

In the past 50 years we had a 144, 244, 2x740, 940, 850, and 2xS80. All of them more than 200K miles when we traded them in. In between some others (Opel, 2xBMW525, Jaguar XJ, Rover 827, Mercedes E) but always coming back to the Volvo’s. Now we drive a Jaguar S and really enjoy it, but my wife wants to go back to Volvo again after this.
My best mate is a sales manager here in the U.K. for Volvo they’re excellent cars the only issue they have is premature ECU failure it’s very common and it’s expensive to fix

If a brand's image isn't up to scratch, the company will fold even if they make decent products. It's not always a rational thing, which companies fail or succeed, or need buying out to save them.

Good engines but they can use a lot of oil. check every week. Even if the engine is 2 litres (quarts) below minimum oil level the car does not give a warning. Apparently it has an oil pressure sensor, not a "low oil level" alarm, but it's very late to give a warning. As it is a turbo engine change oil more often than Volvo recommends.

Probobly a M46 transmission, great transmission but cant handle tuning vary good but im assuming your aunt wont ve tuning the car 😅
I'm usually a wagon guy, my 850R Wagon was one of my favorite pickups. I wanted a V70R, but they're basically Unicorns, especially the spaceball manuals, so I jumped on a S60R I found that was manual. I'm not a "manual or nothing" type guy, but that was the closest I'll get to my dream car for a while with the way prices are going and what I'm willing to pay. Not that I'm complaining, the S60R is great; no one suspects it to have the power and grip it has.
I would love a s60R, i currently have the s60 2.4i and it's amazing! My dream is to get the R sometime though :D

Have just got hold of a 2007 S60R with 109k miles. Doing routine the upkeep you need for an older car. It costs money, much money, but it is a nice old car, and quite fast.

Couldn't agree more. Drove 4 Volvos (245, 745, 945, S60R), 1 Mercedes (124) and a Saab 93 convertible. Once I got another car than a Volvo I switched back to it after some time :) Gotta love the moose!

It costs less to drive with diesel Volvo than charging stupid EV here in northern europe...
On my 5th Volvo now...5 cylinder V70 Diesel...38 city 56 motorway, even got 62 mpg with the cruise on, superb car.
I've got a Volvo v50 which I purchased 6 years ago on 2010 plate. I only drive 20 mile a day and I've never had a problem.Trouble free driving.fantastic car.
Glad i watched this. I have a 05 XC90 with the 2.5 turbo 5 cylinder engine. Its got 175,000 on it, has a new timing belt, I had to replace the fuel pump which i did myself, and it has cooling system issues right now, seems the thermostats stuck open so it gets too cool so I've had to put cardboard in front of the radiator on colder days so it doesn't get below operating temp, and it also has a leak in the radiator and the bars didn't resolve it unfortunately so need to replace that. I change the oil about every 2500 miles, use Castrol fully synthetic since that's what the manual recommends, and it seems to have incredible power still. I climb up the biggest mountain in these parts taching about 2.4 doing nearly 70. It just opens up once you get over 35 or 40,. I really like the car, would like to keep it running for a long time. Mine was made in Sweeden btw and I guess somehow got over here.
oh and i forgot to mention, i backed it into a tree one day on the job. The tree got dented, the car was fine.
Thought the C70 has a Volvo engine, the car itself is based on the Ford Focus CC and most components have FoMoCo stamped on them. Electronic failures in the computer memory can occur if you start the engine when the battery voltage is too low.

I was contemplating gettingone of these Scotty. You've made up my mind. I have a 2004 XC70 and absolutely love it.
Scotty, I have a 2004 Volvo S80 T5 AWD. I bought it new back in 2004. It has 113,000 miles. A few months ago it started shaking at start up when it the car was idling at 1000 and below RPM. When underway the vibration stopped. I have spend a lot of money to "fix" problem:
1. Replaced motor mounts
2. Replaced spark plugs
3. Replaced front struts
4. Replaced timing belt and tensioners
5. Replaced VVE in and out
6. Replace rear muffler
Even after doing all these repairs the shaking at startup continues. wondering if you have any ideas what is wrong. I love this car so I won't to fix it.

I love Volvo's. I have a 1996 850 Turbo Station Wagon with 370000 miles. I bought the thing 6 months ago for $1500 with all the maintenance up to date and well documented. It has the original engine and automatic transmission which still shifts very smooth. Everything but the AC works and the only thing I had to replace was an alternator when the original one finally died on me. I daily drive the thing 150 miles round trip to college 5 days a week.
I like the s60r turbo with the manual transmission and all wheel drive.
Real recognize real. Will probably never get rid of my V70 and XC70!
09’ s80 T6. My thang is a GOER!!! Change the oil every 3 months, regardless of mileage. Owned for a year now, from 121,005 in Feb. 2021 now at 144,576 as of February 2022. I love it!!!
Next one for my family of 5 is an 06’ navigator, Yes sir’
I work at a garage that deals mostly with Euro cars, specifically BMW, Audi, and Mercedes.. I would never buy one but I will admit the old Volvo's with the 2.5 turbo's ran forever.
I love how luxurious volvos are, the have super high quality materials and great design, they have almost all the same features you'd get in a bmw or a mercedes without costing an arm and a leg and not super in your face

@@johncampolo2177 I had one...it was terrible. The convertible top was opened by around 6 pumps. If I tried to put my top down all the pumps would leak out all the oil in seconds, leaving the car sitting on a pile of oil....😂
Sure the car looked nice and had a very strong ending and trans., but do you really have to have an air pump system just to lock your doors...
@@johncampolo2177 the problem with Mercedes is when you have to replace those motors or actuators, which you will, you have to donate your savings, a testicle and your first born to have them replaced. And that's after you make an appt. with the Mercedes auto boutique and wait..

My little 2012 C30 was made in Belgian, solid little car and, also has a T5.
My mom has the same car, except it's the 2.0 turbo diesel engine and it goes strong at almost 200 000km (120 000 miles). Does +40 us mpg all day. Of course it's not as strong as my NA 740 but still pretty robust.
my girl has an '04' s-60. michigan car. zero rust anywhere. looks like it just drove out the showroom. recent airbag recall. but a great car all in all.

A year ago I bought a 2013 Volvo C70 with 60,000 miles. It's a really nice car. I wanted a hardtop convertible for exactly the reasons you said not to get a rag top. Truly, this car, with the top up? You'd never know it is convertible underneath.
I am considering getting one of these SmartTOP modules that plug into the wiring and provide key-fob up/down control of the top and a few other features.

Only thing I don't like about these engines is the pcv box...they're a hassle to replace. Every used Volvo I've bought needed a pcv replacement...other then that I love these cars!
I'm wondering how Volvo has avoided the pitfalls that plague other European cars. Mercedes and BMW both make great engines says Scotty, but they suffer from other problems such as over engineering, etc. How is Volvo better than the rest of the continent?
I’m from Sweden and I don’t have a certain answer but what’s sure is that the Swedish climate provides a good testing ground for vehicles. In the southern parts you have more moist and corroding climate, In the north you have the same climate as in Canada, Alaska, Siberia and we would not buy a car that couldn’t handle the harsh winters. If Volvo didn’t man up we would buy other brands. Also Volvo was involved in producing military vehicles during the cold wars and they had even more demands than a normal family. The engines are extremely durable. One other pretty modern engine is the diesel D5 that easily runs 1 million kilometers with oilchange and perhaps new diesel injectors, the gearbox will give up though. The gasoline and diesel versions of the engine can be found in boats as well, the famous Volvo Penta engine. Volvo also makes heavy duty vehicles like trucks (Mercedes also does that and have the Unimog and some other legendary heavy duty trucks) and I’m sure that technology and experience within an organization will be shared.
@@robertraman6307 The new Volvo's look very good but they are not as reliable anymore like the good old V70.
Since the Chinese took over technology and looks went up but reliablity got backwards.
I own a V40 T4 made in 2013. Never had a mechanical issue. My mechanic says it's still like brand new. The only thing i do is to change the engine oil and consumables and i have 189k miles. So yeah.. they know how to build an engine. 🤞

My shop services Mazda, Honda, Toyota and Volvo ... and they did so for decades. For the past 15+ years they have recommended their Volvo customers switch to one of the Japanese brands. And these people have seen at least hundreds of Volvos before coming to that conclusion.
That black interior is hard to find. I would love to have black on black with a 6 speed manual.

Edit: a year later, I've got a 5-speed 2.4i sedan and a T5 turbo automatic hatchback. Ofc we did the timing belt in both. These cars are DOPE. They have their drawbacks (road noise, stiff sporty suspension) but they CERTAINLY have their advantages (great handling, tons of torque, and the turbo is legit FAST), too. Cost of ownership is mid -- repairs are pricey because parts aren't cheap. Mechanically, they are sound as a top. If you want a sporty, torquey, understated and safe vehicle to Eff around with--get a Volvo inline-5.

I gave my Mrs my 2018 XC90 r design and purchased myself a Mercedes’ GLE.
Massive mistake, GLE going and going to have 2 XC90’s.
Currently in the French Alps, never misses a beat, 50k miles in 18 months.
I DO wish that hard-top convertibles were more common. I almost purchased a convertible soft-top Dodge Dakota (yes, pickup). It was a dealer option (but this was on the Lot). The factory shipped them to a conversion place.
A soft-top Dakota pickup just sounds moronic....
The old Volvo estate were very popular on the continent.Most of them were driven on L.P.G gas.The engines had no problem with the extra heat from the gas.The valves on the Volvo were top quality.
My friend, here in Peru I am thinking about changing my s60 5 cylinder into LPG but I'm afraid if this damage the engine or valves.
Also we have natural gas which is even hotter.
Can you give me your opinion about this?

Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, Hyundai, Nissan, pretty much all Asian cars rust like crazy here in eastern Canada, Volvos and Mercedes-Benz(some BMW's) are whey more solidly built.

I am owner of a C70 Mk2 2008 with diesel 5 cylinder engine. Nearly 300K km and still running good and smooth. I have opened and closed the roof like 10.000 times (exaggerated) and never was broken :D

keep on top of your transmission. New fluid does wonders, these transmissions take very well to a flush to give you another 10 years.
No big news but couple days ago my 05 Mitsubishi with a manual tranny reached 200k miles, just been doing basic maintenance, man it’s just runs and runs

these 5 cylinder engines they produced since 1994 have got to be one of the most bulletproof engines ever. I have a c30 t5 has 220k miles on the stock engine and turbo with no signs of giving up. My transmission has just started to slip but hey its the stock trans as well. I bought it with 130k besides normal service all ive done is change timing belt twice and motor mounts.

I have owned so many vehicles but I recently got a 2004 xc70 man I just can’t wait to head outside so that I can drive it again I absolutely love this car and the way it drives and handles my second vehicle will also be a Volvo maybe an xc90 or an s80 now I’m a loyal customer for life!
