Two Of Exodus' Founders Come Out As 'Ex-Ex-Gay'

- Michael Bussee, one of the founders of Exodus International, the largest "exgay" organization in the nation is now a gay man who speaks out against Exodus. After co-founding Exodus Bussee fell in love with another "ex-gay" Gary Cooper. As expected Bussee and Cooper lost their entire church social network and remained silent about the "exgay" issue for many years. Cooper contracted HIV and shortly thereafter saw the Rev. Lou Sheldon of the Traditional Values Coalition claiming Exodus was "tremendously successful" to justify his war on the civil rights of gay people. Bussee and Cooper felt they could no longer remain silent and came out in the media as "ex-ex-gay" declaring conversion therapy as ineffective.

For those of you who haven't heard the news, Exodus International has shut down, it is no more. They issued an apology on their website apologizing for the harm that they have done and stated clearly that gay-conversion therapy DOES NOT work.
Yeah, but many of the members joined our created off shoots. Exodus Global Alliance is one of them now. And yes it's not officially Exodus, it was founded upon that idea and influenced by them. Hell they even took the Exodus name. You really have to be careful with nut jobs. This is 2021, and sometimes it's like the dark ages.
The Exodus Ministry is finished. They've closed down. They recently issued a full apology. Founder Alan Chambers wrote -
"Please know that I am deeply sorry. I am sorry for the pain and hurt many of you have experienced. I am sorry that some of you spent years working through the shame and guilt you felt when your attractions didn't change. I am sorry we promoted sexual orientation change efforts and reparative theories about sexual orientation that stigmatised parents."
Still not a fraud?
Better to be true to yourself and accept it and move on, can be a tough journey though - i know myself.

I really admire Michael Busse for his dignity in handling all this and his sense of duty and responsbility which compelled him to speak out. I think if more church leaders demonstrated that kind of grace, we might be better off in this world.

As a black fellow, I'm privy to the knowledge that within the black community, there is a dangerous phenomenon of supposedly "straight" men let out of the prison who return to their wives/girlfriends (for a second) before they start cheating, both with opposite and same sex people. Many like to claim that behavior as "abandoned" when they are freed, but many times that is not the case. The behavior remains and contributes to our high rates of HIV across gender lines.
Suppression, like prohibition, never works. Period. You'll only end up hurting yourself.

Michael said he has been saved since he was a senior. But how does Michael justify his adultery? Whether you're for homosexuality or not. Everyone knows adultery is WRONG! Not to mention he only makes himself look bad, speaking out on a group he helped form.
First of all I want to explain that, I’m a born again Christian gay man. I used to attend the meetings in Rosslyn VA, and I just want to say that for me, and for what I judged from the group, It was a really a nice group of people, nobody said anything about not being gay anymore nor repair therapy, they were meeting compose by very smart group of people, and nobody inside the meeting said "I’m not gay anymore," nobody said "I used to be gay."
It is great that the founders are coming out and criticizing the organization, I hope their comments lead to its ultimate downfall.
We used to hang out and have a great time together, we went together to see too fast to Furious 1, behind the back of the ministers, hahahahahahaha, and had a great time together, we had a blast. I’m doing great been gay now, I’m a Born Again Christian man who is gay, and I feel a call to the gay churches all over the world, support your gay bothers and sisters in Africa, thanks.
I think that if it is the latter possibility, then it is a lie that there is love in the relationship. Open relationships and promiscuity are among the most dangerous things, whatever your sexuality, and the fact that some gay activists are championing the open relationship as a model for sexual behavior is disturbing. And well, keeping secrets about contamination is also a trend among some gays. I read in college before that famous philosopher, Michel Foucault, did that precisely and denied it.

Men deal with strong temptations and attractions to other people all the time. We battle with our passions, we are faithful because of the commitments weve made to our spouses, our children our church and our combined families. Real Men dont pussy out because we feel a strong chemistry toward someone else.

I don't know about Exodus, but therapeutic options need to be available for people who WANT it. It is a FACT that some people experience fundamental change in sexual orientation and others experience significant decrease in SSA. While it may not be for everyone, these minorities who change need to be validated and acknowledged.
The question is the next thing: when one gay is converted, he will keep on passing by struggles, since we have the sinful nature. The mind will be the field of Battle. Every day it will need to purify his soul because of the corruption and the vice for the life that he was surviving. The soul is wanting, the foul soul likes the illicit sex. The treatment can get a beating days like years. Each one must take his cross. God will prove the hearts before handing over the blessing.

Being delivered from a sin doesn't mean the temptations go away for ever. Notice he said they both loved their wives at the time they "fell in love with each other." All temptations can have a very strong pull on someone. The Bible does NOT teach that we stop sinning when we no longer feel tempted! Paul said his sin nature is CONSTANTLY at war with the spirit! These 2 "ex-gay gays" CHOSE to give in to their sin; not only homosexuality, but adultery! You think heteros never are tempted to cheat?
If they have been delivered from the bondage of homosexuality, but not delivered INTO heterosexuality, then where ARE they? caught in Limbo? and besides...I myself have yet to come across Christians who aren't hateful towards Homosexuals. If heaven is going to be full of people who hate, then why would I want to go there?
Being diagnosed in 1990 doesn't mean he acquired HIV in 1990 genius. And yes, you can have HIV for a decade before any serious symptoms show up. No one knows why exactly, but you can google the info.
I just meant that they would not have married women in the first place had the Church supported them as homosexuals in the beginning, before they were married. I don't agree with divorce, per se. I was just saying that we, as Christians should support people's right to love one another, no matter the sex (because He did not preach on homosexuality), because I believe that is how Jesus would have wanted it. Well, the thing is if you are a gay man, you are not going to fall in love with another woman. You might love her as a friend or sister, but you are not going to have the mixture of sexual attraction and genuine love you would have of the person of the same sex. Gay men do such a great job of hiding their true feelings that I can understand how it would be difficult for straight person to understand.

If he is really in love with his partner, and his partner him, how then did his partner contract HIV, unless his partner did sleep around with others? I don't get the logic of his claim about love.

Not really. The above video only proves that one person did not change. It does not prove that orientation is immutable for everyone. Moreover, let me clarify, I did not say that it was mutable for everyone...I just said "the assumption of universal orientation immutability [was] absolutely wrong." Note the word "universal".
A strong part of me hopes that some ancient document is unearthed and proves that Gay Christian apologists are right about homosexual intimacy in God's eyes. But whatever this proves about the effectiveness of the "therapy," the real victims in this man's story were the wives and kids of him and his partner. Whether its a sin or not, the greater sin here was adultery. I hope their family's were very open minded, otherwise I can't imagine the pain this caused them. I hope he's repented of that.
The problem is that people are looking to the organization and not to the developing of their own personal relationship with God. Either He is God (all powerful), or He isn't. And in the end, everyone has to give their own account for the deeds that they have done. Exodus is not your savior or deliverer! So don't blame exodus if you have given in to your temptation or lusts in your flesh. Is there anything to hard for God? To Jesus be all the glory. I KNOW FOR MYSELF.
@cosmosman I would actually say "the overwhelming majority". Women typically want husbands that don't sleep around. In the case of men with men, the overwhelming majority have no such concern. I would be very interested in a study of over 150 male /female couples in long term committed relationships (like the above study) that were 100% non-monogamous after a few years. I would also be interested in a study that shows that this study is NOT representative.
People don't understand that this world system and all its temptations is nothing but a matrix that appeals to our sinful nature. We have a desire to be loved and accepted, but that often gets twisted through the corruption of this world. Homosexuality is simply one corrupt manifestation of that. So yes, we ARE to deny ourselves. Jesus said one is not worthy to follow Him if they cannot take up their own cross and deny themselves! When we do that, we discover the complete joy and freedom in Him!
I won't say homosexuality is wrong, but I think that enjoying your sex life is less important than honoring a promise made to someone. Even if the sex in your marriage isn't satisfying you anymore, a promise was made and that's kind of low to even allow yourself to get close to close enough to another person to discover that you love them.
When you get married you promise to be faithful, and falling in love someone else - male or female - is unfaithfulness.
"There is no evidence"
I beg to differ, there is evidence that some people experience change. If the research showed nothing they wouldn't have changed the stance. There is just 'insufficient' evidence for the APA to endorse any specific therapeutic techniques. It only takes one person experiencing some change to prove the assumption of universal orientation immutability absolutely wrong.
It is ok for coe to think that and for him to set the provisions for their own life. The PROBLEM is when they try to force their beliefs on others who believe differently and point their finger telling them their life is wrong because its not like theirs. Also when they mistreat someone because of the difference in which the other person lives their life.

Changing orientation is very diffferent than talking someone into engaging in sex with someone of the opposite gender.
"Experiencing change" is "christian therapy" lingo for "praying and pretending" to make others happy.
That's neither science, nor "change".
@AtheistinFundyLand There was a study by 2 gay men on 300 people (150 long term relationship couples), and after a few years, 100% of the 300 people were non-monogamous. Now, you need to ask me for the source since I'm probably making this up.

Yeah, but he only married a woman because Christian people told him that his own human nature was wrong. I am sad for his wife, but if the Church had supported him from the beginning as Christ told us to do so, this never would have happened. Remember, Jesus never said a word about homosexuality, but told us to love one another. I am a Christian and I believe that Jesus would have supported these mens' right to love each other.
@MPaulHolmes That's true, but you could also argue that only using one book to determine what is right and wrong based only on when it was first written instead of using regular judgement is equally as lazy.
I am a little familiar with Exodus Int'l history. If Mr Bussee had such an integral part of forming Exodus (which I admit he does), why in the world would he seem to be so proud of having started this umbrella ministry? I am not a hater, but identify as ex-gay (for my ownself, not for anyone else). I have seen several of Mr Bussee's videos and bloggings and he seems to take great pride in it, defending his early spot in Exodus history. I'd think he'd distance himself instead of being a whiny little queen who needs atttention anyway he gets it. Sorry, I am sure I'll have to repent of this later.

Freud's notion that sexuality is the principle driving force has been discounted. People are more complex than that. There are other considerations to be made. Self control is not unhealthy...that is why we have frontal lobes in our brains...they deliver powers of inhibition. Moreover, recently the APA changed their stance from there is "no" evidence for therapeutic change to there is "insufficient" evidence. Change happens for SOME.

Your failure wasn't due to Exodus. It was you're failure.Please be honest about this! My son is an addict,he doesn't blame the many rehab centers for his failure every time he falls back into addiction. We all struggle in this world with something. God loves us equally..black , white, gay, skinny,far etc. You need to go to God and ask Him to help you figure this out. After all is said and done you will stand before Him one day not the world.

Is it the case that 25% of "straight" men have over 1000 partners in their lifetime? Have you read the study of 100 gay couples, written by a gay couple, that discovered that after a few years, 100% of them had moved on to new couples? uh oh. ignore everythingf I said, because I accidentally typed an 'f' at the end of "everything".

@cosmosman sorry, I thought it was 100 couples, but I re-read it, and it was over 150 couples. So, several hundred people from each state is sufficient? hehe. Well, if that's the case,then I'd be curious to know which state it was from, or if it was spread out. If the 300 some people were from a single state, then I guess we know that everyone in that state that's gay sleeps around with others too. Well, +/- 4%.
Do you know how many people lose weight and they later gain it back? Does that mean NO one can succeed? Does that mean NO one should try?
If you are happy as you are; fine! But please don't criticize someone who is trying to make a change for the better (to them anyway). And don't be hoping and cheering for them to fail. That is cruel.
@TheOoshed I think you may have missed the point. He never was straight, he was lying to himself, he even states it along those lines. He always was gay and realised when he met the person who was right for him, that is not to say he did not love his wife but there is a big difference between loving someone and being in love with them. To be fair life is too short, do what makes you happy and fuck everyone else.

@JRHockney The alternative would have been to continue to live a lie and be miserable for the rest of their lives. The pain to their families is tragic, but put the blame where it's due - on the culture that coerces gay men into living lies that can only end in pain for everyone involved. If they'd continued the lie, they'd have done far more harm by convincing other gay men to enter doomed straight marriages. By exposing the ex-gay fraud, they worked to prevent similar pain in other families.
