  • This is a sample video from the Reading Poker Tells Video series, available for purchase at www.readingpokertells.video. This series was created by Zachary Elwood, the author of Reading Poker Tells and Verbal Poker Tells. This video looks at long looks at hole cards, especially early in a hand and in multi-way pots. Long looks at hole cards will make weak hands more likely.
    Review for series: “I bought these recently as part of my prep for WSOP and I think they’re absolutely brilliant.” - Dara O’Kearney, pro poker player
    Another review: “Brilliant, incisive, and incredibly accurate explanations of the clues that proliferate on the tables. The material is priceless.” - Mike Lynch, amateur poker player, U.K.

    In my experience, especially in dealing with weaker players, the long look is often tied to their view of betting speed. Usually weaker players will associate a quick bet with strength and a hesitation in betting with weakness because they know how to play/bet strong hands, but have to think about how to play weaker hands. As a result they want to bet quickly after looking at their hand, but still need the extra second or two to think about how to play a weaker hand, so they will delay the looking at their cards by looking longer giving them more time to think and allowing them to bet quickly not to show weakness in the betting speed, not realising the hesitation while looking gives away the same weakness as with the hesitation when betting. So a long look and quick bet from a weak player is often a weak hand.

    Just found your channel, I'm sure there are plenty of bigger channels to choose from, but you have me exactly what I was looking for. So I subbed and hit the bell, thanks 👍🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻 👍🏻
    Edit, I also think that players looking at their weak hole cards for a few seconds, also means they are working out what hands those 2 cards can beat, and that also gives some info and reinforces your theory 👍🏻👍🏻

    Long Looks at cards amongst Beginners (such as I): D'oh, forgot what I .. D'oh, again I for ... wait, was it Hearts or ... naa have a look again, even on A-A or K-Q :-D Not even relevant whether high or low cards, it happens repeatingly when I'm concentrating on the players etc. actually, most anything can happen anytime. If I got a pair, I usually look a second time (cause I didn't see it in the first time) to check for a possible flush-match after knowing I got a pair.

    Acredito que o tempo só deveria contar a partir do momento em que o jogador vê as duas cartas (0:23), o que deu 2 segundos.
    Se o tempo começar a contar desde a primeira carta (sem ver a segunda), seriam "several seconds". Pois, 3 segundos são para olhar sua mão é muito tempo.

    Great topic, but I would want to see some broader stats on time spent looking at cards to see a statistically significant difference between weak and strong holdings. You can always find individual players to make your point on just about any tell.

    • @ReadingPokerTells
      @ReadingPokerTells  7 лет назад +2

      Admittedly, that's super hard to do and, IMO, would not be worth the effort. I am confident it is a pattern based on the examination of lots of footage and also my own experience playing. My videos aren't meant to be any sort of scientific proof of these patterns, as that would obviously take a lot of work, but are more meant to show you examples of the behavior "in the wild," and an excuse to talk about the factors. Obviously there's a good amount of trust of me involved, but I always say you should look for these things on your own and learn to trust them before relying on them.
      Even if I put together a statistically significant sample, it would probably just show what I already believe; it's a fairly correlated behavioral pattern, but far from 100%, and there'd be a lot of variance. Such a sample would be very hard to put together also because there are so many factors that make the situations less than pure; for example, stack size would differ from case to case, table position would differ, lighting would differ, etc. So many factors. So you'd ideally want to have a super pure comparison where all other factors are the same. Long story short; I just don't think such an analysis would be worth the effort involved. I think most patterns I talk about most experienced players would agree with, and most of them aren't going to be super-important unless you notice a specific player having them anyway. So these videos mainly serve as tools to help hone your eyes for things to look for when playing specific players.
      Rambling a bit but those are some of my thoughts...

    • @samore11
      @samore11 7 лет назад +1

      Good points, and thanks for the detailed reply. The timing tells probably are pretty decent since they are based on the process of visually recognizing and categorizing your hand, just steps every player must go through. As opposed to talking, touching your face, licking your lips etc.

    Most do not look at their cards until it is their turn then they stare for awhile regardless of what they have. Then how do you tell?

    • @ReadingPokerTells
      @ReadingPokerTells  7 лет назад

      Many players will be consistent in their behavior, yes. It's hard to get reads on most players. But a lot of players are not consistent. So this is just about things to look for for those players who are not consistent in their behavior. If people have a lot of variety in their behavior, it's a good sign they're probably imbalanced in some way.

    I know about this one and sometimes use it to slow play good hands. Then I over act like I have a strong hand. I'll do other stuff like ask someone how many chips they have left. Love using psychology in poker. Depending on the player I've told them, "you should fold" people hate being told what to do. One of the things I do is practice looking at my hands. I deal myself two cards, then carefully mind my actions and look at my cards the same way then count to 4 and put them down slowly making sure I am very robotic about my movements. Humans observe a lot more than they can consciously say, so the gut feeling comes in. I'll occasionally bluff using a microexpression. I'll have 67o and give a micro smile. Is anyone actually looking at me? I don't know but I will play the part.

    • @dm0065
      @dm0065 6 лет назад +3

      Aces UTG is a tough spot though. I think just going ahead and raising is the move myself, but limping is alright too, as long as if you accept that if you don't get raised and you wind up taking the flop with an unraised pot and lots of limpers you have to be ready to release it. It's only fishy if you limp it and then won't lay it down postflop.

      Mickael Burguet I know he was hoping for a raise but I agree you gotta raise it with Aces preflop in that situation especially if you are a generally looser player that would do the same with QJ suited.

    I love these tell videos because I do the exact opposite. For example...people think I got a weak hand because I'm reading the daily racing form and watching a TV with the horse race. I'll push my chair back and act like I'm going to go place a bet at the machine for the race. Low and behold I raise it up and people think I'm bluffing. Then I wind up taking your money. hahaha.....Thanks to All who study and make these tell Videos! Time for me to spend some free money. What? I'm not bluffing, I know I got the nut flush, I just get more money thrown in the pot that way instead of people folding on me.

    • @buymy92accord

      Jay Hunter At the end he explains to watch for that very thing. I know someone that does the inverse as well... the problem is that he does not make sure to do it every hand or occasionally on weak hands in the same way.
      I chat a lot and vary my actions, but I make sure to set traps in cash games by switching it on a monster pot. Oh, the number of chips I put on my cards told you what I had consistently, and I made sure to show my cards if they were looking at my behavior; but once the monster pot came I'll either bluff or bait them. Knowing a player is watching for tells or patterns of play is how I am consistently known as a great cash game player and only an average tournament player in my poker circles. I love dropping $40-80 in a tournament to lure them into believing they know my tells and can beat me. Later, when I take a couple hundred $ + off of the same player they look bewildered as my investment pays huge dividends.

    Trying to read poker tells is a lot of nonsense.
    Why?
    Because really good players can throw them out there to mess with your mind. For example, the "long look at the hole cards". You can do this when you have double Aces or a 7 - 2 nothing.
    You can Hollywood it when you have something, or nothing.
    Reading tells can be a life-saver when you're dealing with a fast-talking car salesman or when a super-hot chick comes on to you.
    But in poker, it's a waste of time. Concentrate on what you're doing...

    • @Seattle_Slew
      @Seattle_Slew 5 лет назад +7

      True, but depending on the game "really good players' may not be present. THAT's precisely when this information is useful. It's up to you to make the determination who the better players are, and are they likely to be sending false tells? You're narrow-mindedness is apparent. Go ahead, ignore tells at your own risk, lol. 🙄

    • @ReadingPokerTells

      It's true that anyone can switch up stuff, but the point is that there are general patterns that are common in the general player population. And the known patterns become even more likely to be true when you're talking about fairly inexperienced players. Like all behavior-related analysis, it's a numbers game.

      You said:
      "...ALL the best players in the world use tells day in day out..."

      Why?
      Think it through...
      "Best Players" play only other "Best Players"...
      "Best Players" don't give off tells...
      Why?
      Because they're all "Best Players"!!!
