I have a 5 week old chick that makes all the motions of a rooster crowing, but no actual sound comes out. Would pullets do this as well as cockerels, or is it a pretty good indicator that this chick is a Rooster?

If I recall correctly, that’s a silkie cross. Most of the chicks in that video are crosses (aka mutts).

    • @pamperedchickenmama

It's possibly a rooster. Is it possible it's stressed? Chicks don't usually fight with each other. What breed is it?

at 2-3 weeks a few of my pullets began running toward my hand, bumping it with their chests, standing very tall and looking me right in the eye. When i picked them up, they were very calm, unlike the others who would tremble and peep. I am a first-time newbie and didn't realize you can still get roosters even when you purchase pullets. But if that is a sex-linked trait, then at least half my chicks are roos. I didn't think to check for signs when younger because i naively assumed the hatchery would send pullets. Now i'm seeing a real problem, in that I can't have roosters if they get aggressive with the hens or people. I love them and handle them and baby them, and now i have to kill them? I wish i could find a place who will take roosters. I wish the hatcheries didn't kill most of them and didn't stuff the orders with roosters on purpose, even when you don't ask them to. But i understand mistakes in shipping the wrong orders and imagine someone else got my pullets and i got their straight-run.
Isn't there a way to castrate them? Feed them estrogen or something so we backyard beginners can keep them? Any advice for the broken-hearted?
