Tina Turner behaves like a rooster and the Cochins are kinda bullies to the chicks so I would keep my eyes on those for future reference because its not good to keep Nasty chickens in your coop to stress your other birds out...........I used to keep chickens and I'm just extremely intuitive when it comes to animal behaviors. I absolutely love your show......you guys are what I aspire to
Also..this has worked without fail for me so far. An old Mexican farmer taught me this . When the chicks are about a week old and they are getting a few wing feathers. If you look closely, they will start to get a few tiny tail feather sticking up out of the fuzz. Pullets will have tail feathers at this point. Rooster will NOT have any, but just a round fuzzy butt. Up until about two weeks or two and a half weeks old,( at which time the roosters start growing tail feathers also) you can tell with a great degree of accuracy with this method.
I got 2 chick Buff Orpington, one grew feathers out later than the other. That same one had a comb showing before all the other 6 chicks. Are you saying this is like my a rooster?
😢 Yesterday I found my oldest hen passed away in her nest box. Had a few tears over Ms. Red. Such a sweet lap hen that passed from just old age. Does my heart good to see your happy mama hen with her chicks.
@@jasminflower3814 my favorite is a red sexlink. We became friends when one of my blue roosters kept coming after her. She would run to me every time so I could rescue her. She's the oldest hen I have on my place.
Poultry places usually pull at length the wing of the baby bird to see if it's a girl. If it's female the wing will have different length fur/feathers, if a male the fur/feathers will be straight and same length. Never have had any luck with the hold the head and see if it brings up the feet thing.
By the way. My hens hadn’t laid eggs all winter and I tried feeding my chickens the feed you recommended, goat feed, cracked corn and black oiled sunflower seeds and in a few days they started laying eggs again. I have 12 hens and I’m getting about 6 eggs per day which is better than I do most years during the winter, Thank you for the helpful advice.
I had a momma hatch three babies this year. I was so sad the fox got her when they were free ranging one day. But another hen took over and now she’s raising the babies. That’s super cool! They’re about a month old now and doing great.

We had a momma duck take care of her ducklings and another hens chicks. I'm not sure if the chicks thought they were ducks or the ducks thought they were chicks. They would make a line and walk up to the neighbor's place to eat the apples that had fallen off the tree. Then she would bring them all back. The neighbors loved watching them. She always had them back before dark. It was interesting to watch them they were not in a single file line but fanned out, side by side. There was nothing wrong with the hen, but I think she was just lazy...lol
This year we bought chickens for the first time from Tractor Supply, so we had to get Six. When they were five days old, I could tell that one of the yellow babies was a rooster just because of his attitude , and got the usual eye roll from my husband. BUT sure enough……his name is Enoch because he knocks on the coop.
We have 6 chicks from Tractor Supply that I call our “Spice Girls.” Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Saffron, and Ginger. I suspect, however, that Rosemary is going to be renamed “Roscoe.”
Doug and Stacy I love watching your videos, reminds me of better days when I was a little girl, most of these ways were common place to me, I come from a family of 10 children and mom and dad of course, and because we were not well off, many of the things you guys teach I have lived through as normal part of our day. We had a lot of fun when I was a child. Too bad people lost the old ways of doing things. I still learn new things and get refreshed on things I forgot or wasn’t old enough to learn before everyone became so modern. Thank you so much for your time and effort, God bless you all, love you, Judy
My daughter and I are first time chicken mamma’s. We love them all so much. We are blending them in with my brothers flock, we snuck 3 Polish hens in with our Australorps because they we so stinking cute. We are so pleasantly surprised at how snuggly chickens can be. The Australorps are a very sweet breed, their feathers are so soft. Thank you for your videos, I always learn so much!
My Dad raised chickens he usually could tell by their combs after a couple weeks old , The roaster would of course be bigger -darker than a hen . Seen a video of a factory showing that the roasters wing feathers are all one length when spread out . The hens are miss matched - short & long . It was interesting . Glad you moved the Mom * chicks
Mamas are fierce protectors! I do like to give my new families a kennel within the run with everyone else, but where the babies can run into the cage but the big birds can’t, other than the door which Mama will do her best to keep them out. I love watching mamas with their babies all cozy underneath, and jumping all over Mom ❤️
My favorite hens are ones that survive cold and heat and keep laying. I've enjoyed having three Dominiques and later three Wellsummers. They forage pretty well, and I sure did enjoy the fresh eggs. I just moved their little coop to a new spot every few days and put up a portable fence around them. They had to be locked up tight before dark because of raccoons.
We lost a 1 legged chick named Gimpy and I’m sure it was a raccoon. The second night a beautiful white hen was taken. Never will happen again. The coop is secure and there is a light in the high fenced in enclosure. Now they have the freedom to forage outside their little enclosure and they live that. It’s so much fun to watch them. My son raided them as baby chicks and now they are with a group of 5. The other two were replaced by an older hen and a couple younger hens. They hens when they were little protected Gimpy. I was crushed when he disappeared. I’m not wanting to eat chicken anymore-at least not any I raise. I already won’t eat Bambi, so….these animals are so precious!

Mine are also layers. I have 15 hens and 21 pullet that will join the flock soon. We I have 9 Guineas and have been successful in getting them to sleep in the coop. It’s not hard to do but you have to be patient. Every time I fed them I talked to them. 8 weeks inside the coop and 2 weeks with an enclosed outside run, chicken wire all around. To get them back inside the coop from that enclosure I talked to them saying “inside Guinea Guinea” Then when I finally let them free roam I made sure to get them off the trees if they went up by treating them with flock party worms, still saying “inside Guinea Guinea” The Guineas also run to me when I go outside to check on the chickens and willingly go into the coop every night.

We have a hen that has been broody for about 3 weeks, but we don't have a rooster. So today we went and bought her 4 baby chicks. She's a first-time momma, but so far, she has done very well with accepting them and keeping them warm. Hopefully, all continues to go well.
You need to add Brahmas, the giant chickens! Ours are buff & we love them, we kinda got them by mistake but they are cool & so colorful. But now we're thinking of buying a rooster to breed them. We're getting jumbo doubled yoke eggs from them. We had 1 with a TRIPLE yolk! (Now we video tape our egg cracking, waiting & hoping to see another triple. Lol)
@@BobbiJoGeho We feed them organic vegetables & meat scraps from our table along with their layer pellets & scratch that has bird seeds, sun flower seeds, & corn, plus we add more black sun flower seeds in shells. They're going to be 9 lbs fully grown.
I'd love to have a buff brahma as a lap hen. LOL. My last one was a jersey giant named Kali. She got to 15 lbs. Loved to ride on my shoulder but at that weight I started having back pain...
@@BobbiJoGeho Note, these large hens won't be 9 lbs if you process them for the freezer. We have processed our first flock, the barred rocks & Rhode Island reds weren't worth it, really no meat. I'm still trying to get myself to raise/process the hens. I'm a farm kid, we raised beef cows but I was so far removed from getting too connected to the animals. I have stopped naming our hens.. lol. So as food is getting limited, we're looking more at raising our own food.
They are so cute! I just love little chicks! Thank y’all for all you do! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate y’all and all your useful information!!! God bless both of you AND your farm animals!!! We love 💕 y’all!!! Take care of yourselves! Your biggest fan from North Mississippi. 🙏👍🤗
Great video. I never heard of that way of checking peeps. When I was young I used to work on My Friends Parents chicken farm. They had around 10,000 layers. That was back in the late 60’s
So pretty..I'm glad you brought mama and babies indoors..so many critters out there to eat them..now she could relax and teach them chicken ways..as always prayers and blessings to all
Such an easy way to know! Thanks for the tip. I have a broody hen sitting on 5 eggs and plan to purchase a few more to add to her brood once they start hatching. It’s such a rewarding part of having chickens.
Hello Stacy, I just tried it on one of my four Buff Orpington chicks. (they should all be hens). The one I have tried your trick on gave the results of a Hen as you described. Thanks for this video. Really enjoy watching you guys.
Just discovered you and your husband. I was a poor city kid that never a yard to play in. Always wished I could live on a farm. Well me and the hubby are hoping to do just that. It's great to watch these videos you and your husband make about your own journey.
Simply awesome. Thanks for sharing your adorable chickens. Pretty cool on the gender checking. Great names for the crested chicks .Love those windchimes. God bless 🙏🏼 Stay safe ❣
Good move. I moved mine too, but a few days before their "due date" because mamma was nesting in an unsafe location. Mom and chicks are doing fine in their separate enclosure in the run. As for my favorite Polish, that's hard since they're all so danged cute! However, I'll pick Tina Turner, simply because I have a Tina too. My Tina is a Black Copper Maran with a red cape. Same idea as yours but in reverse!
Polish are the best. I had my Ooster rooster for many many years. He passed rite before Christmas this year 😔 broken hearted but he was so funny. Had the absolute best personality! You’ll love your polish! I sure love mine! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was told the roosters raise up and the hens just hang. It was pretty accurate in all of my chicks that raised up were roosters but some that just hung were roosters also. Also I was told it only worked until they were a few days old.
See that makes sense to me, seeing as roosters grow those fighting claws when they're old enough. I've had some nasty scratches from those when I postpone butchering too long. Still, seems a little strange to me hanging a chick by the head to figure out its sex.
Stacy, I love following you... love what you and your husband are doing and sharing it all with us. I have to tell you last June I picked out six hens, all six dropped their feet and hung as I lifted them gently from my hand. All six are laying hens and giving me lovely eggs now. All six dropped their feet with the lift.
OMGosh, so cute. We are getting our first straight runs at the end of the month... I'm gonna have to try this! Thanks so much... Oh I can't pick which one, I like each of the three just because they are special in their own ways...
Her method is not very effective. She won't reply cause I'm sure she got at least half wrong. Venting is the only way to tell for sure, feather sexing is a literal guess while trying to look educated.
Fascinating to hear about determining the sex of chickens! I would love to raise some chickens. !!! I live just outside the city limits and I have I shed I would like to convert part of it into a chicken coop. I’m so glad you’re going to have a class about raising chickens
Thanks a whole bunch for showing how to tell a hen from a rooster!! I have been frustrated in the past when I got chick's and found out most were not hens!! I sold the roosters and went back and got more that time I got all hens BUT it was a while before I knew what I had. Trial and error is not always the best thing
Billy or Cindy definitely. I have an assortment of polish Crested coming from hover hatchery. Loved watching this video. You seem cool. We have been homestead about the same amount of time. My husband's name is Doug as well. Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I really love this life. I'm glad to find others who do to. I'm hatching chicks. So I'm gonna try this method. Have a great day.
You can flip them on their back also. Roosters will stick their legs out straight and lay there. Hens will kick and flip back over. Better than hanging them by their neck!!
First 3 to 5 days or so you can sex by the feathers. You tube has the info. On doing it several ways. There's info on doing it after they are older. Some breeds the combs and wattles and growth size works, I use several methods, by week 8,I am 90 percent sure. You always get one or two. Roos that will fool you. I have hens that won't lay and won't let the rooster mount. But, they will set on any eggs, and mKe great moms? Old folks call them crowing hens. They growl a lot and are big bullies. Never kniw with chooks. But I love em !! Matt
My grand parents had an old fashion farm, and the let all the chicks grow , some of the roosters were exchanged with neighbor’s for changing gene pool, other boys were used for meat. Nobody was killed young.
@living the dream she is removing any comments that speaks out against her way. I was answering one but she had the comment removed by 11min. Wonder if she removes comments that is on another person's comment..
Yes I’m having an awesome day. Today my momma hen took her 5 baby chicks out into the chicken yard for the first time. This is our first time have a hen hatch eggs and the way she care and protects them. I brought 5 polish chicks. Only one survived. Her name is Bella. She is beautiful-black with the white plum like yours.
Tina Turner, my fave. I looked after chickens last summer. They were so cute and fun. Some would come up and eat out of my hand! Good on you Stacey for saving those chicks!
It's so coincidental. My wife has been naming our chickens after singers. We have Ozzy the rooster, Loretta, and Lynn. Today, we bought Reba and Dolly.
I like the cochins; their temperament seems to be so sweet! Thank you for doing these videos....I really appreciate them and you. I just have one rescued chicken and dont know much about them...except they are modern dinosaurs...so cool!
I have never seen that way of determining whether a chick is a hen or rooster. My dad and uncle always talked about doing the copper wire test. I typically wait until they start crowing, and then I say, “oh! That one is a rooster.”
Good little mama with her new family. All chickens are sweet. Had chickens when kids were younger, think of as regular chicken type. Few different colors, not aware of name for varieties. How you checked if girl or boy looks easy. My son also loved those chickens and few years ago got chickens for his home to have eggs. As they got bigger he saw that every single one was a rooster. Gave them to a farmer and decided to not try to have chickens again 😉❤️🐤🐔
Buff one is a gold spangled appenzeller spitzhauban not a polish, notice the forward pointing crest. Looks like a hen should lay lots of nice white eggs and be really pretty too😊
Crested are great! They bond for life when separated then put back together after a long period of time the remember mom and siblings!it’s really special to see them re-unite. 😘

We're getting jumbo doubled yoke eggs from them. We had 1 with a TRIPLE yolk! (Now we video tape our egg cracking, waiting & hoping to see another triple. Lol)
What are you feeding them? Just curious.
You have the best homestead.
Great video. I never heard of that way of checking peeps. When I was young I used to work on My Friends Parents chicken farm. They had around 10,000 layers. That was back in the late 60’s
So pretty..I'm glad you brought mama and babies indoors..so many critters out there to eat them..now she could relax and teach them chicken ways..as always prayers and blessings to all
🙏❤️🕯🕊🇳🇿
Cochen's have always been my favorite due to the weather hardiness , plus they are so friendly. Even the Rooster's!
Thank you for sharing this! Its a wonderful experence seeing this. I grew up in a mining town not any where near a farm so i do enjoy your posts.
Such an easy way to know! Thanks for the tip. I have a broody hen sitting on 5 eggs and plan to purchase a few more to add to her brood once they start hatching. It’s such a rewarding part of having chickens.
I really like my big roosters and hens that have just a slightly puffy cheek feaths- i dont know what the breed is but i like them- they are mellow
This was such a fun video! Loved watching momma with her chicks.❤️
Hello Stacy, I just tried it on one of my four Buff Orpington chicks. (they should all be hens). The one I have tried your trick on gave the results of a Hen as you described. Thanks for this video. Really enjoy watching you guys.
Loved the beautiful momma’s protectiveness & the precious chicks. Would have liked to see any adult silkies.
I think tina turner might end up being prince...that chookie mumma and her chickees are so cute...thankyou for showing us your trick...
Never seen sexing chicken that way but it looks easier than doing their wings. We will definitely try it.
Just discovered you and your husband. I was a poor city kid that never a yard to play in. Always wished I could live on a farm. Well me and the hubby are hoping to do just that. It's great to watch these videos you and your husband make about your own journey.
Best of wishes for your dreams to come true.
Simply awesome. Thanks for sharing your adorable chickens. Pretty cool on the gender checking. Great names for the crested chicks .Love those windchimes. God bless 🙏🏼 Stay safe ❣
We have two broody hen setting on eggs right now and except a hatch on the 25th.
Natural incubation is the way to go.
Really neat! I like the cresteds, especially the gold and black one. What fun!
That was very educational & very easy. I like the three chickens with the extra feathers on their heads.
We are picking up our chickens today and I snuck a rooster in on my husband 😂😂
Oh my heart ❤️ those babies were off the charts with cuteness! I really like all of the fun birds but Tina Turner might be my favorite
That was sooo cute4! It made me cry! Thank you for sharing that! It's so awesome to see new life...You guys are awesome...thank you. Rich & Dawn in MN
Such a good mother! Love to watch hens with their chicks.
Billy/Cindy I love watching your videos learning basics on true living. Thank u for sharing your life
I think mama is my favorite!, she's beautiful and a good mama. Next favorite, I think Tina, lol. Have a wonderful day, Stacy, God bless you!!🌷🌻🐦
I'm excited to have barred rock chickens on our first homestead that we are moving to at the end of March 🎉
Loved the names and Tina Turner! How awesome!! I am still waiting for our Polish to arrive. 👍
Polish are the best. I had my Ooster rooster for many many years. He passed rite before Christmas this year 😔 broken hearted but he was so funny. Had the absolute best personality! You’ll love your polish! I sure love mine! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
what is it about about baby chickens, just makes a body smile.
"The cuteness factor is off the charts" So true 😊
I was told the roosters raise up and the hens just hang. It was pretty accurate in all of my chicks that raised up were roosters but some that just hung were roosters also. Also I was told it only worked until they were a few days old.
See that makes sense to me, seeing as roosters grow those fighting claws when they're old enough. I've had some nasty scratches from those when I postpone butchering too long. Still, seems a little strange to me hanging a chick by the head to figure out its sex.
Agreed. Hens have legs down. Roosters legs up.
Correct. Out of all the chicks at IFA, I was able to select 6 hens this way. They are all a year old now and laying like crazy.
Soo stinkin cute all of them. I appreciate your teaching lesson for today. Thanks
Love the work you do at your farm . Excellent!
I love Momma hen. She's my favorite! Love you guys! Thanks for all the great info. 😊❤️
Awwwww the babies are so cute! I love Cochins - the feathered feet guys.
OMGosh, so cute. We are getting our first straight runs at the end of the month... I'm gonna have to try this! Thanks so much... Oh I can't pick which one, I like each of the three just because they are special in their own ways...
Oh my gosh what a good momma!!! Trying so hard to protect her little babies as you scoop them up.
Since some time has passed, I'm interested in knowing if the ones you marked turned out correct?
I always was wondering if ended up being that sex?? Hopefully she will reply.
@@terrimoore5181 hoping :)
Her method is not very effective. She won't reply cause I'm sure she got at least half wrong. Venting is the only way to tell for sure, feather sexing is a literal guess while trying to look educated.
@@rapscallion3421 was there a need to be so rude to her about It? Kindness goes much further IMHO. God bless
@@sharonsunshine2532 it wasn't rude at all. You're just a soft and sensitive, which will get you nowhere. Good luck
Fascinating to hear about determining the sex of chickens! I would love to raise some chickens. !!! I live just outside the city limits and I have I shed I would like to convert part of it into a chicken coop. I’m so glad you’re going to have a class about raising chickens
Having chickens is easy. You don't need a class.
Hello.. Did you ever do a follow up video on the chickens? Did the method work? Love your videos x
Love your flock. Thank you for introducing me to cochins. I have 4 now and they are so fun to watch.
I love the swishing sound they make when they walk. It reminds me of a little girl wearing a nylon/slick petticoat (yes I'm that old...).
#STACY 👋
I had to stop watching the vid to tell you , You did a fantastic job moving the mama hen and her clutch‼️♥️
👍
Matt
Imma try both of these, just got chicks for the first time! I’m really excited to see them grow!
Feather sexing won't work on silkies, but will on other breeds
Brad M good to know about the sexing behavio
I like Phylus Dillar!
My grand parents had an old fashion farm, and the let all the chicks grow , some of the roosters were exchanged with neighbor’s for changing gene pool, other boys were used for meat. Nobody was killed young.
We just had one of our hens show up with 14 babies! Going to try this and sell the roos at the farmers coop. Thanks Stacy.
Thanks for the tip! We will try this on our chicks👍 Billy/Cindy is my favorite!
The place is looking great guys!!
I love love love the polish
We had one of those Polish birds. He was a rooster we named Larry. Great fun.
Tina Turner, my fave. I looked after chickens last summer. They were so cute and fun. Some would come up and eat out of my hand! Good on you Stacey for saving those chicks!
Loved the chicken identification technique. Best vlog I've seen in a while. Stacy you should do more!!❤
It's so coincidental. My wife has been naming our chickens after singers. We have Ozzy the rooster, Loretta, and Lynn. Today, we bought Reba and Dolly.
I am just starting with Cochins. I’m excited to see how it goes. Thanks for the sexing tip!
Yep, she sure did "borrow" some eggs from other chickens! Some of our broodies did that, so we were used to.....odd colored babies here and there!
Very interesting and l like your kindness with Momma chicken.
I like the cochins; their temperament seems to be so sweet! Thank you for doing these videos....I really appreciate them and you. I just have one rescued chicken and dont know much about them...except they are modern dinosaurs...so cool!
As a baby I was marked with a sharpie
and I’m a guy so my mom must have known
what I was for sure
I have never seen that way of determining whether a chick is a hen or rooster. My dad and uncle always talked about doing the copper wire test. I typically wait until they start crowing, and then I say, “oh! That one is a rooster.”
I loved the lesson. I just have to say that you are a stunningly beautiful person. Thank you for sharing your tips.
Looks like a hen should lay lots of nice white eggs and be really pretty too😊
I've never heard of that method of sexing chickens... Thanks for sharing!
Rusted Oak Homestead i just read about out it. A study says its not reliable at all.
Neither have I we are new to homestead so I have 4 buff orpington chickens I have to determine the gender so I will try this.
@@GossMania how did it turn out?
Me neither. Also wondering how well it works.
My dog Betty heard the mom hen clucking upset, my dog came over to my phone like what's going on!
Very cool makes me want to get back in to chickens and pheasants turkeys and ducks.👍👍
Crested are great! They bond for life when separated then put back together after a long period of time the remember mom and siblings!it’s really special to see them
re-unite. 😘
