I don’t think the dates in the first video are necessarily a mistake…the cameraman fell through, we don’t know how much time passed while he was in the backrooms, or when the camera was found. The footage upload date is probably what’s in the description, not the date the footage was captured. We don’t know how time works in the backrooms.
Agreed. I think the end of the video when the camera makes it back to the surface, thats probably the date on the video description. The last day he filmed, when it was later found.
Matpat has been hurt by mold before. I feel it yo. Had a pipe leak and destroy my kitchen floor in 2020 and I can't tolerate the water level in my kitchen aquarium getting too low bc it sounds like it did that horrible night
Yeah, everytime I go to a bathroom and there's no one there I get reminded of the backrooms and get scared and try to get out of there as fast as I can.
I believe it says at 19:44 "Due to the elevation discrepancy between panel R25 and R24, a small box field is created." The image is noting that the "null zone 4" is an imperfect copy of the area on the left, as if space is looping there. The vibration detectors I think are to check for signs of life moving in the backrooms.
@@GODOFAWSOMENESS1 I think what they're trying to say is that it says "null" instead of "small", which I also believe is correct when you go back and look at it.
That discussion Mat had at the beginning about the mold on the wall and the removal of it, talking about removing the dry walls and getting fans in there, gave me flashbacks. House went through a flood, and he is not kidding; it took *months* of repair, weeks of running fans and tearing walls down. True terror is not embodied in the backrooms, nor any haunted pizza place; it is home repair.
I think a big reason of why a lot of arg’s use daisy bell (the daisy daisy song) is because it’s the first ever song sung/synthesized by a computer in 1961, and old technology seems to play a part in a lot of these series. A lot of people find the recording of that song by the computer creepy but I personally think it’s endearing, it’s like he’s the worlds first vocaloid. Hatsune Miku’s grandpa
The video for it and the lyrics don’t help the creepiness. Like yea cool, first song made by a computer but who wrote the song and r they ok? Who hurt them
The fact that watching someone else be terrified while watching something creepy or scary automatically makes whatever you're watching way less creepy or scary is super comforting. I love that. It means you're not alone in being creeped out by whatever you may be watching, and it's just great. ^__^
As an author from the backrooms wikidot (the more official one because of the stories and that) I think that this is a good start. Fun fact: the backrooms actually came from a 4chan post and slowly evolved into this entire series of things, making societies and liveable levels, there is also a lot of other things like the beast of level 5. I recommend you should check it out someday.
Lol, devolved ? I can agree with the devolution in regards to all the whacky levels, but Kane Pixel's video is far from a devolution... EDIT: Nevermind, you gave him props at the start.
i think you mean *evolved. the various stories that came off the original 4chan backrooms would be (semantically) considered an evolution, not a devolution. more came, not less.
It appears mat will focus on the Kane side of the back rooms but you’ve obviously wrote a bit of the actual canon back room iceberg from the wiki dot itself. I think that’s amazing honestly. I was wondering maybe you authors could include more info on no clipping as transportation throughout the back rooms. Maybe a story about a back room survivor who was so good at it she or he was on par with some entities and trained people how to better no clip as an escape or exit like maybe he or she would be a member of those bigger organisations in the back room levels
@@annaleft9726 yeah a lot of people are divided on whether adding all those extra levels away from the good old level 0 was a good idea I think it’s kinda cool personally
The FBI warning doesn't denote government involvement. That warning was on millions of VHS cassettes as a warning about copyright infringement. They used FBI in the header to add a more ominous tone to the warning.
Yo, MatPat, there technically isn't a solid canon for the Backrooms universe, but the Backrooms wikidot is generally considered to be the 'most' canonical. So check out the site, and maybe some of the other theorist channels focused on the Backrooms like Broogli and Mr. Ferrante.
@@JRon1 Yeah the levels are a misfire if you ask me. Totally not frightening. People go to level and level with the biggest bullshit, jungles etc whatever you can come up with.
for next time when you're decyphering text like this - I'd recommend taking multiple screenshots and layering them with lowered opacity? if you stack them precisely the dark pixels might add up and make it more readable.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I also think at the time the camera falls from the backrooms to the real world it might have skipped time or they just never found it until then.
Fun fact: the red string is a reference to the Greek tale of the Minotaur. A man secretly brought a red string of yarn into the Minotaur's labyrinth. This allowed him to find his way out after slaying it.
Yup, just commented that, too. I'm wondering if the Greek Myth will have more to do with this, since they're literally in a labyrinth with a scary monster hunting them down.
If Kane is sticking to the original idea of the Backrooms, the Backrooms themselves are an entirely non-human creation and has existed for an unknown amount of time. The yellow space being only the first of a near infinite amount of levels with different aspects, surroundings and dangers. That photo of the room with water and the pipe is seen to be another level, taken from “liminal space” photos where the idea is “you’ve seen this place before, you just don’t know where” where everything has a sense of familiarity to it.
It's funny to know that MatPat wasn't familiar with the whole thing about the Backrooms before. Well, I just found these things last year and started to know when there's a trend last year in RUclips about Liminal Spaces, and the Backrooms was the most famous one. There's a point where I'm watching hundreds of compilation of photos that are Liminal Spaces last year. And this, The Backrooms series videos is a recreation of some of those liminal spaces photos, it's mostly hallways, but that stair case in the first video and also that London Airport hotel indoor courtyard are the most recognizable liminal spaces photos. I'm such a huge fan of Liminal spaces, and I hope Kane pixels could recreate more liminal spaces photos like 90's birthday party abandoned set, abandoned mall, etc.
The Oct 17 1989 Earthquake was a very real event that happened right in the middle of the World Series game happening in San Francisco. It was one of the fiercest earthquakes the Bay Area faced in a long time. Kane was pretty masterful choosing that date for the first contact video. This probably hints at ASync probably being somewhere in the nearby area, perhaps Silicon Valley?
Kane definitely deserves the attention he’s getting, this stuff is fantastic. I love that the cooler subgenres of horror are doing so well as of late. Great thing after great thing showing people that horror is so flexible and impactful.
Heads up with the collateral video, there are shots of people disappearing while off camera. Watch the person on the right at 38:39, as the camera zooms out he is nowhere to be seen. In the following clip you see a man walking along the bridge, the camera pans up and then back and the man is gone. I didn't notice anything in the other clips, but these are very subtle hints of what the "collateral" really is beyond the earthquake.
@@angelic_celeste you see that there are 2 men walking to the right? When the camera pans out the one at the most right is gone, even as it pans out more and more.
As a chemist, seeing “vibration” followed by “eV” I knew it was talking about quantum mechanics/atomic vibration so I laughed at mat thinking it was about earthquakes, but then I remembered that most people don’t know what electron volts are
Daisy Daisy aka "Daisy Bell" is the first song to be sung through computer speech synthesis. It was a huge stepping stone for the development of the computers we use today. I am unsure of how it fits into the backroom lore but it definitely wasn't just put in there just to be creepy.
I sure hope people check the comments under the original video about the null zones-- there's someone who shared what the blurry words said, and the layman's terms of the scientific information that's presented. It's really fascinating, and shows just how much in-depth and crazy research Kane did for his lore. I'm amazed by the intelligence and careful realism someone so young is putting into his creations.
If you want more info on the back rooms then check out the wikis. Not the fandom one, use either the backrooms wikidot or the liminal archives wikidot. The first one has a lot more levels, but some are poorly written. The second one has only a few, but are written much better and has a few more interesting things included. There are some discrepancies between the two like level 12/11 (12 in liminal archive, 11 in wikidot. Same level, named differently since level 1 in liminal archive is level 0 in wikidot) Edit: Reading my comments I think I should clarify myself. These wikis are not for this series, it is for the Backrooms concept alone.
If Kane is sticking to the source, the Backrooms just existed before humans started to mess with it Also: 38:41 The guy on the right went poof - you dont see him when the camera pans to the side at all despite him just leisurly walking along that path moments before - guess he no clipped
A-Sync could be a reference to asynchronous, literal definition "of two or more objects or events not existing or happening at the same time." "Of a machine or motor, not working in time with the alternations of current." Sounds like a portal machine to me!
yeah, the "dNch/dy=8000" has to do with heavy ion collisions. I just used my phone, took a picture, and flipped it. also, in the collateral video, one of the people with the bases disappeared. take a look at 38:38
@@Anno023 The camera panned over way further than that guy could have gotten at that walking speed in that time and he was no where to be seen. The guy at the edge of the screen is someone else. They're even walking from a different direction. The guy at 38:38 definitely disappeared.
30:48 imagine if the creature in the backrooms or someone at the entrance cut it. the idea of taking a tether and then it being removed without your knowledge is so so scary to me. they try to follow it back but its lost
the Backrooms feel somewhat close dreams i've had since i was a kid (and still do). uncanny, weird places that mixed memories of places i've been to and stuff i watched, like games and sometimes movies, and sometimes things that my mind just came up with, they give the same vibes as the backrooms without the whole scary stuff ofc. also, watching the lost footage video just made my irrational "phobia" if you can call it that, of no clipping in video games a lot stronger.
If you aren't already aware, there's a term for this! "Liminal spaces". The exact description differs a bit, but there's a subreddit you can browse and many videos you can watch if you're interested in the topic.
For anyone interested, since I'm not entirely confidant Matt realized this, Kane didn't create the backrooms. It start out as a single image with a caption on 4chan and gradually blew up into this community-driven universe of lore with its own wiki and everything, similar to SCP. Honestly, I'd love to see a GTLive stream that's just Matt reading a few entries from that wiki.
@@CheshieD I know but taking like SCP containment breach and doing a play through of it , or talking about who let out the SCP’s who caused it , or if he could get his hands on the unreleased SCP game that was in development
So I’m not sure if anyone else has said this and I’m sure if mat’s looking into this he’s already thought about it, but, is it possible that the little alcove with the drawings and the warning to stay still is a null zone? So then it makes sense that there would be the sign telling people to stay still because maybe they figured out that the monster can’t get them there.

As I’m piecing together some of the timeline of events, I have a theory that this group of scientists were sent in to research other missing persons after the last video showed the mold spore corpse. I believe that the missing persons are persons known to have gone missing shortly after the events of the 10/17 first contact. Either as a direct result of opening the portal, or as a result of further space time distortion caused by experimentation inside the back rooms.
Hey, cool catch! I was thinking this myself, but it seems someone beat me to it. Also, I was a little skeptical of my thoughts because I'm not 100 percent sure how the dating system works for this thing since there's only been so much made of ot as of now.
@@ClarkMakesCringe Not sure what you are implying. The clap board says July 4, 1991. The video description says it was found September 23, 1996. This implies it was lost for 5 years.
The "If anybody, Blame him." I guess its referring to the fact that that person probably saw the fungus in one of the rooms and had the great idea to get closer or touch it and slowly died as the fungus take over his body but it might be other thing that's a very direct explanation.
Good theory. I thought that he might be one of the scientists who had their faces blurred out earlier on, maybe specifically the one who tried to "shut it down" when the test went wrong but was obstructed by something. It'd make sense for a creator (or *the* creator for all we know) of this space/the link to this space to be the one at fault for this mess. p.s. cba to go back and check the clothing of the corpse and scientists, but they may be similar, and if they are, that probably supports this theory.
12:36 I always thought the year differences had to do with when the footage was found after the camera phased out and fell from the sky. Also how does time work in the backrooms? The camera kid could have been lost in there for years and not even noticed. To me the year on the slate looks like 91 but it could easily be a very poorly written 6.
I was thinking "electronic" and "null," since it looks like he's working with it on a computer, and not being able to get it to line up, but what you've got is definitely also possible!
What I think is wrote at 19:49 is "Due to electronic discrepancies between panel 125 and 134, a small box field is created" I know they already said it but they just didn't mention the numbers.
When you talk about the first film and the discrepancy between the dates, remember that it is a "found film" which means that the film was probably found at a date later than it was filmed.
Yeah, I agree. I was also wondering- I haven’t looked into any extra lore so this could be proven wrong. But if this is another dimension, there’s a chance that there’s a difference in time. Where the backrooms runs slower than the world we know. So while the camera man was in there for what we know could’ve been a short time for him, it could’ve been two whole months for “our” dimension.
@@katthebookkitty589 i dont know much about the backrooms but im preetty sure that its canon that the backrooms are slower than the front rooms since people inside only have to eat and drink like once a month and theyll be all good

I love Matt's red coat so much. It reminds me of Travis Touchdown's coat from the No More Heroes games. All he needs is a laser sword and a t-shirt with some super weeb stuff on it and he'd totally have a great Travis cosplay
24:05 In Matt's defense! I can kinda see, wasn't my first thought. First thought was, "Oh! Code!" Didn't even really click it was technically backwards in the first place. But the thought of, "Mirror Matt", struggling to read something MIRRORED, is, ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!! Love it.
25:38 "[a muon] is like an anti-electron" No, no, no! Subatomic particles are described by three qualities: mass, charge, and spin. An anti-electron, called a positron, is a particle with the same mass and spin as an electron, but with a charge of +1 instead of -1. A muon, as described in your google search there, is what's called a _heavy_ electron. It has the same charge and spin as an electron, but a much greater _mass_ A muon is not an anti-electron.
An actual idea I had, and I'm sure many others thought of this when presented with the dates issue on the slate and the video description, is what if time moves differently in the backrooms. It's stated in "the third test" and shown in the first video of the backrooms, that this an "pocket dimension" of sorts, with a door that dropped the camera out of the sky, and yet it's quite evident that there's no floating infinite backrooms in the sky, clearly defining the two separate universes apart, meaning that a time difference, such as time moving slower in the backrooms, is entirely possible.
25:11 Muon Filters in this case might be used for "passing through" objects, and *may* be why people can phase through reality. It's a stretch, but it seems like the case. It could also be just an important mechanic for Backrooms tech.
I’m so glad you’re delving into this amazing arg! However, one small thing I noticed is that the reason the date on the original video is different from the description date is because I think the one on the video is when the incident happened, and the one in the description was when the camera was recovered. Either way, I’m excited to see your full theory on the backrooms! Kane’s series is so underrated, hope it gets some more recognition now!
Thats what i was thinking. If you slow and pause the video, you notice that the cameraman was taken by the monster and the camera alone fell out of the sky. It looked to be a empty forest maybe park area and since it is found footage, the date in the video is when it happened but in the description is when it was actually found. Another idea, we know space is kind of warped, whose to say time isnt too?
As someone who's experienced multiple earthquakes in my life, they hardly bother me anymore. I've never experienced a tornado before though and the randomness of something like that scares the crap outta me.
The fact that there's mold is kinda weird considering how empty and sterile the rest of the backrooms are. Are the people trying to access introducing the mold/life into the backrooms (maybe why the explorers are more concerned about finding something living?). Would be interesting to see if the mold thrives or if it further corrupts the backrooms and the items found there. The true origin of tripod man
@@testerwulf3357 where did the beast of level 7 come from? How can Level 11 have an open sky? The backrooms don't make much sense so the mold was probably always there
The mold, in my opinion, is likely a result of the moisture from the dead body combined with the moist carpet. Remember, water generally creates mold, and the human body can absolutely contain fungi. And when you die, those lifeforms take over the body and its fluids, which upon death and decay, defuse into the environment. That's my theory at least.
33:44 I may be wrong on this, but if the back rooms is a liminal space, time might not work in the same way, or exist at all. So that may just be Kane. When he entered and then eaten (attacked? Infected?), this is where the “thing” put him. At the point in space and time where they came in. Probably to deter us from coming in and creating the timeline where Kane came from. Kinda like closing a loop in the movie Looper. The Back Rooms must exist somewhere outside or in between space and time for this to work i think. Hopefully he gets picked up by netflix so we can get a proper lore dump.
I feel like the disconnect with the dates is actually the date the camera was found after it clipped back to reality after Kane was captured by the monster
@@pshyis They clearly were trying to find the Backrooms and took interest after finding the Footage, I mean it explains why there's that office in there in one of the videos but that could just be something Kane did for the heck of it, no actual meaning.
@@laughingtoon1240 Hey now, just because they're monsters now, doesn't mean they can't still be janitors too. Those rooms would be way more dusty and disheveled if no-one was cleaning them 😂
12:12 - If this is found footage the reason for the dates not being the same could be that the date in the video is the date of filming, while the date in the description is the date of release of the footage or when it was found. This could be a slip up from the creators side but this theory at least has an explenation for it lore wise.
I feel like the "blame him" part kinda alludes to the idea that the backrooms are man-made and that dead guy just snuck inside earlier, and died in there because he got lost so now that he introduced this mold into the backrooms, it started to grow and evolve
Matpat didn't seem to notice, but the guy they found on the floor looks a lot like the guy in the first missing persons flyer. I don't think he snuck in. I think he fell into the backrooms like the dude in the first video we saw, and he got lost and died there.
Reminder that The Backrooms isn’t just a thing Kane made up, it came from I think a 4chan post I hope that Matpat includes the ENTIRETY of The Backrooms lore/sources in his eventual lore video
It seems he isn't doing a lore video on the backrooms, but a theory on Kane's iteration only. He will likely search more into the Backrooms for context, but the video will be dedicated to Kane's series
Matt, that FBI warning is just something that shows up at the beginning of a lot of VHS tapes, I think you may have read into that one just a little bit more than needed.
Thank you for the whole mold bit you had as the cold open, because I just saw a horror game that freaked me out waaaayy more than usual in another video and you immediately pulled me out of it. I appreciate this so much. 😭
I really like the thought that the experiments made or dragged the make rooms to them causing the dimensions to be so close you could just step in the wrong place at the wrong time and you just slip in the back rooms
38:38 Am I crazy or did the guy on the right disappear after going out of frame? He is walking and they pan out a lot, so I assume he fell into the back rooms.
I've just had an idea! The date probably doesn't match bc the Sep. 23 might be the date of the last piece of footage found. If that's correct it'd mean Kane spent over two months in the backrooms. I'm not sure if anyone else had thought of this, but it's interesting!
Matpat, important thing you should know. There isnt really a backrooms lore, they're just an endless interpretations of the same concept and this is just Kane's backrooms lore and not the backrooms lore.
@@synderthmc I think since Kane’s Backrooms are so much more popular than the original that it’s becoming the main canon. Obviously it’s not the original but it is the most popular now.

Im very late but just incase anyone couldnt understand it, at 15:55, it says "due to the electronic descrepancy between panel 225 and 224, a null box feild is created"
I think the date in the video is the time he went into the back rooms and the date in the description is the date the footage was found, hence the name “found footage”
What At says at 5:27 is basically the reason why I come to every one of his videos comment about the Monument mythos series. Alex is a really talented creator and I'm sure Mat would love to react to his series.
at this part in particular it talks about the Null Zone's. It was used Scientists to escape the monster chasing them. Once you entered any of those Null zone's it stops and doesn't chase you anymore. 20:06 Also forgot to mention the part when the guy jumped into the hole in the ground, there was a null zone if you couldn't tell by the small wiring around the hole at the bottom.
First, I remember watching all of that coverage on tv when it happened. It took quite a while to rescue/recover people from that highway collapse. Second, no way the government would build a testing facility right on the San Andreas fault line unless it was necessary for the experiment. Maybe the entry about the sensor beams reinforces this. Third, I also grew with tornadoes. I actually have nightmares about them infrequently.
Matt i know this probably late, but have you considered that Time moves differently in The Backroom Realm? Like maybe it could have been years to us on Earth for the Camera to drop from the sky.
I love how whenever mold is present anywhere he dives into his monologue about water damage and dry wall replacement. Does anyone else find it weird that he calls it a moo-on and not a m-you-on?
Most of the phone numbers that have valid area codes come from California, where the earth quake happened. So maybe it only affects an area? People seem to fall through the ground so it’s located underground somewhere and maybe it spread that way as well. What’s strange about the phone numbers is that all of them have valid area codes except one, which makes me a bit curious about it

Fun fact: the backrooms actually came from a 4chan post and slowly evolved into this entire series of things, making societies and liveable levels, there is also a lot of other things like the beast of level 5. I recommend you should check it out someday.
Why am I not surprised that 4chan came up with this. SCP, Backroom, trolling angry celebrities all the cool weird stuff comes from 4chan.

Deja vu

Same level, named differently since level 1 in liminal archive is level 0 in wikidot)
Edit: Reading my comments I think I should clarify myself. These wikis are not for this series, it is for the Backrooms concept alone.
I don't think those would be helpful for trying to understand Kane's backrooms series. Every indicator shows Kane is not going by the wiki.
I don't recommend the wikis if you want the true horror of the backrooms

When Matt refers to the backrooms lore, he’s referring to Kane’s work with it specifically.
@@jamsistired yeah, and when he talks about making a theory about it sounds like he thinks kane's lore is the main canon or part of the main canon
@@synderthmc I think since Kane’s Backrooms are so much more popular than the original that it’s becoming the main canon. Obviously it’s not the original but it is the most popular now.
@@jamsistired i hope not. personally his backrooms lore is kinda lame. I hope it doesn't turn kut the backrooms are manmade
dude, i've always been so interested in the backrooms, even before i actually started reading/watching things to do with it, I've always been fascinated.
Don't know if Matpat will see this but you got me curious enough to watch it!
@@nessie3682 I'm glad! It's amazing and you wont regret it.
You can hear the music of Washington there.
I’ve been watching monument Mythos when he only had like 38k subs. I love his content, extremely underrated
@@Crox101 no one asked
@@Crox101 Hopefully he will get many more subs (And also a Film theory about it)
I think September 23 1996 was just when the camera was retrieved and there was time distortion (this comment was written at 12:44)
at this part in particular it talks about the Null Zone's.
Now it makes sense they said to stay still
First, I remember watching all of that coverage on tv when it happened.
What if the San Andreas fault line doesn't exist but is a government conspiracy to keep the Backroom project secret?
Matt i know this probably late, but have you considered that Time moves differently in The Backroom Realm? Like maybe it could have been years to us on Earth for the Camera to drop from the sky.
I love how whenever mold is present anywhere he dives into his monologue about water damage and dry wall replacement.
Does anyone else find it weird that he calls it a moo-on and not a m-you-on?
Just to note for myself in real life no-clipping out of reality would require intense vibrations (as used in the “Flash” TV show)
A backrooms analogue horror series is exactly what I was looking for, and Kane Pixels provides!
Most of the phone numbers that have valid area codes come from California, where the earth quake happened. So maybe it only affects an area? People seem to fall through the ground so it’s located underground somewhere and maybe it spread that way as well. What’s strange about the phone numbers is that all of them have valid area codes except one, which makes me a bit curious about it
Ive been learning alot of cgi / computer animtion in the past few years. me and some friends are working on something like this, i like looking at them to see what i can learn from it.
Good luck with your project!
Do you need another hand, cause I wanna work on projects like this but am primarily a storyweaver and not an animator so making my own at this point is a bit difficulttttt 😌

23:14 the backwards text could be a RUclips link, the equal sign is what gets my theorist senses going but its not complete.
"Due to a electronic discrepancy between panel ____ and ____ a small box field is created"
The box field would also line up with the null zone 4 image
Glad I’m not the only one who could read it
looked like the first number was 225, could be my eyes though
Elevation descrepency
Maybe
It's elevation discrepancy and panel R25 and R34.
The fact that this was made in Blender is just amazing
"Due to the electron discrepancy between panel 225 and 214, a small [something] field is created."
kx
Matpat the backrooms is when u no clip out of reality so they found a way to “clip” into the no clip area
he knows
I think you’re forgetting that these videos haven’t said anything about being 100% accurate to what the wiki says. Unless they do in which case please tell me, I would like to know.
AW IM SO GLAD THEYRE COVERING THE BACKROOMS i was so excited for this
At about 30:10 a new missing poster flashes for a brief moment. Anyone else see that?
hey matpat, i'd just like to say this; on the clipper thing there is a differing date because the guy was lost in the backrooms for several years, that or the camera was recovered years later.
yeah I figured that wasn't any kinda of 'mistake' or something. I'm certain it was intentional
