    I bought an Intel MacBook Pro 16 2019 with a 5500m and bought an EGPU with a 6800xt. It works in boot camp and Mac OS flawlessly. I repasted the chips with PTM 7950, and added some thermal pads to the VRMs and it's amazing!
    It's perfect for my work flow and allow me to wean myself off of windows.
    AS a game dev, I use Linux, Mac, and Windows, all bare metal. It's been great. And doing the dev work in Mac, I dont' have to fight the OS to get work done.
    Intel Macs still have a solid purpose and will be supported for a while still.
    Oh I paid only 700 USD.

      How well Does it hold, if compared to a macbook air 8gb the bae model, i have been looking between these two options in the second hand market, and these are quite similarly priced, i use my 2012 upgraded ssd and ram to 16gb not so frequently but occasional use for editing videos mostly in 1080p and sometimes iphone 12 4k 60fps videos under a minute, serves me well, only while exporting the fans kick in, when i came across my friends 2019 16 inches i9, i got mesmerized by the screen size the speaker quality and the humongous track pad, didn’t get to extensively use the 16 inches but the time had kinda fell in love especially with the modern design, m1 are fast and battery back up is amazing for sure, but the the 13 inch screen is kind of asking me to stop and rethink my decision especially with only 256 gb storage, in the second hand market i am getting a minimum of 1 tb with 32gb ram and 4gb radeon graphics, as per my workflow, do you think it is worth it to sacrifice these perks for a machine that is sure future proof but to what extent, i do have to sacrifice a beautiful 16 inches 1tb storage and the amazing speaker, i do not care much of the new os or the perks that come with it, my workflow with the laptop is not that much, half of the time its just sitting on my table idle, which would you recommend for my purpose.

      @@anupammahato1 I would say unless you have a very specific use case to have x86 and bootcamp, you should look towards apple silicon.
      Def go for 16gb, if you can. And have your video editing on an external SSD, while keeping your core OS and apps on internal drive.
      The reason I say this is we don't know WHEN Apple will stop supporting Intel based devices, and my use case is very niche.
      4GB of VRAM will be ok for 1080p Editing, although slower for sure than that M1 Air. An 8 GB Ram Device will swap memory to storage, which will wear the SSD more.
      Not to mention battery life is leagues apart.
      TLDR: If you buy an Intel Mac, expect to use it as a transitional laptop. Sure it will probably last years, but I honestly don't expect Apple to support Intel past 2 years. This years update will work on Intels, but we don't know about next years.
      In your use case, I think a flagship Intel Device would be better suited to you over an m1 Air with 8 gb of ram. However you will lose out on battery life and fan noise.
      If you are ok getting the Intel Mac while you save up for a Pro Chip Device, that is what I personally would recommend. If it's idle on the desk most of the time, the temps will stay low and fans quiet.
      A quirk with Intel based MacBook Pros though. If you connect to external, you need the monitor to be running at the same refresh rate as the MacBook, or it will kick in the dedicated GPU. Or you can close the lid.

    Patchers are not always 100% compliant. I've had mixed results with them. Another factor to consider is that the latest Chrome requires at least OS 10.15, and you can have issues with RUclips on operating systems earlier than that. So I'd suggest not buying a Mac that can't run at least 10.15. Another bit of advice - the MacBook Pro line from 2016 through 2018 had issues with the keyboard, but the MacBook Air models of the same year had no keyboard issues. All of that said, I'm a fan of older Macs - I'm watching this on a 2012 Mac Mini connected to my TV right now.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, the keyboard issue was real but any Mac surviving this long most likely should be good for a little while more. I have not had any issues with Open Core if you are using that one as long as you confirm it's on the supported list first. Thanks for sharing and watching.

    My wife just got an M1 Air (and loves it). But I didn't want to drop a grand or so on a new Mini with 4k monitor so soon after. So I'm sticking with my 2017 Retina iMac. I've upgraded it to Ventura, to a 1T SSD, added 16 gig of memory for a total of 20, updated a bunch of apps. All for about $300. I just bought a 2020 MacBook Pro 13 with the Intel i7 10th gen 512 GB SSD & 32 GB of RAM and it performs very well. It does not feel slow at all and everything is snappy and quick to open. Temps are normal too around 50-70 degrees. Battery life is average but I have always had my laptops mostly always plugged in. The performance of this Mac exceeded my expectations as I thought it would be a tad slow but I was wrong. I use my mac for your average day to day tasks that aren't very cpu intensive. Just bought a 2019 intel mac with 32gb ram and 4gb video card (exact same specs as the one you have listed at 5:51 for $200 USD - same price). The reason it was cheap was because the owner felt there was a hardware issue due to it running poorly on Sonoma. I downgraded to Catalina and it works flawlessly, and I can install Windows or linux on an external SSD which I wouldn't be able to on an M3. I truly believe unless you're doing 4k video editing or AI stuff, you really don't need an M3. One thing you should research more is, whether Apple is intentionally slowing down older machines with their upgraded OS'. Sonoma ran horribly on my machine, but Catalina flies!

    Loved this video, especially as someone who makes very similar videos on their channel. One thing I do disagree on is recommending any MacBooks from 2016-2019 - the butterfly keyboards are far too problematic. I've owned 6 MacBooks of that era and had issues with 4 of them. It sucks, but those MacBooks simply aren't reliable and leave us in a weird spot of either recommending something older (which are all getting really old at this point) or newer (which are too close to the M1 Macs in price).

    My usage is limited to basic tasks: email, documents, RUclips, Netflix...
    I plan to keep it for several years, upgrading the software with OCLP if necessary, while a save money to buy a new MacBook with an M-series processor.
    What do you think? What's your opinion?
    I would like to get the Air M1, but I live in Brazil, and here it's overpriced and I don't have enough money to buy it.
    My options are the MacBook Air 2017 or the MacBook Air 2020 with Intel (I don't like the butterfly keyboard, so I won't buy a MacBook with that keyboard).

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  3 месяца назад

      It's a tough call but it should work OK for the most part. A used M1 Air would be quite a bit better for sure if you can find one but I think the i5 should get most things done for you and using OCLP is good to keep on the newest version. It's hard for me to know for sure since everybody's use case is different but if that is what you can afford then go with it and it will be fine. I have a few older Macs and they work good so no worries. Thanks for watching the channel.

    Only two things that are really annoying with Intel Macs are the loud fan and the horrible battery life. Especially watching youtube. Other than that these Intel Macs are just fine. Especially the ones that were released without the butterfly keyboard a few months before the M1 came out back in 2020. If you can pick one up in pristine condition in sites like Swappa you would not be disappointed.

      Yes, the battery is an issue for sure especially if you get one with higher battery counts. The keyboards can be an issue also but they are now so inexpensive it's just a risk I guess.

      If I was buying a Mac today for real-work that makes you money I would go with the M chip Macs. But that doesn't mean for a bunch of people the Intel Macs are still good. It's just the M chip are quite a bit better at things like video editing, photo editing, code compiles etc. But the cost does make a difference so I would get what you feel is right.

    alot is going on on my side but ill put it on a quick story, i lost my car and i was thinking should i get a new one or commit to finishing my setup this year, i figured out 2 things, first i want macbook pro which means pay over time and second apple march event, if apple release the new ipad with next chip to run games i intend to buy it, if airpods max 2 also comes out i also will get those, if none of those come i will just get macbook pro pay over time, my daily life is now research, netflix/yt and gaming, when i get macbook pro it will enable me to use imac as external monitor for netflix/yt and macbook pro for research and maybe i resume webtoon also if utility allows it, and as i watch netflix i game on my ifon,ipad also has same use for apps plus it is bigger and better if comes with next gaming chip, this allows me to do 3 things, save ifon battery, use it as external monitor or just use it as a individual device for its spefific games since mac and ios use different games, plus they are both touch use unlike mac, for 2024 that is my plot, for 2025 is next ifon, i itend to own 2 ifons because i cant carry ipad with me daily and i cant stay without a phone for 2-3 weeks(pre-order), as for mac gaming i did not give up, im just delaying it because of battery limitations, once it degrates i need to buyback to get value back so getting max is not valid right now, especially since i do not game on mac anytime soon netflix and research takes priority for me, stuff piles up and i lack time to be up to date on everything, i hope you're doing well and keep it up.

    I've looked into this but for my use case (mostly backing tracks and automation for worship music), I'm not limited to JUST Mac. For the price of an intel Mac powerful enough for this purpose I could get a much more powerful PC laptop or a much cheaper one would get the same performance. For me personally, I feel like this would make more sense when M1 Macbooks get to the price of Intel Macs, simply because M1's are powerhouses.
